From exclusion to excellence, you are what you learn!
I will argue here, as one who was born in the London borough of Lewisham to Jamaican parents, that to present an alternative take on what it means to be educated in an institutionalised and systemically racist society, is crucial to conversations on so-called “black underachievement” and anti-racism in the UK. Drawing on aspects of my biography, anecdotally and lyrically in an auto-ethnographic way,Footnote1

will make known the journey of a child deemed uneducable, who was expelled from school at fifteen and from college at sixteen. Doing so will permit me to reason on the validity and viability of alternative sites of learning, that are in essence black led, grassroots, and community-based spaces for holistic edification. Indeed, it was my exposure to black studies during the 1970s, in the Southeast London-based Moonshot Youth and Community Centre, that inspired my life-journey from exclusion to excellence, as evidenced here

Making healthcare more gender inclusive; experiences of older people with multiple disease conditions in primary care settings
Background and Aim: To boost patients’ satisfaction of older people with multimorbidity, it is necessary to investigate the relevant factors of patient satisfaction and to examine the contrasts in the factors according to gender. This study aims to investigate the factors of healthcare satisfaction based on gender among individuals with multimorbidity in Niger state north central Nigeria.
Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out between October 2021 to February 2022 among patients attending general outpatient department (GOPD) of 4 purposefully selected secondary hospitals in north-central Nigeria. A structured pre-tested questionnaire was used to
elicit formation from 734 patients who were recruited into the study using a random sampling method. The selected participants have multimorbidity, aged 60 years or older and consented to participate in the study. The data were entered into JISC online data collection tool and exported to IBM
SPSS version 27 for analysis. Mann-Whitney U test analysis was performed to compare the participant’s mean satisfaction level and gender.
Results: The study reveals that males were more educated, but the females utilize the healthcare services more. It shows that females are less likely to be satisfied with factors that are linked to access and quality of healthcare,
and financial burden of medical care. Whereas males are more likely to be satisfied with factors that relate to patient-physician interaction time and patient waiting time and confidence and trust in medical care.
Conclusion: Acknowledgement of female and male patients needs and satisfaction with services will lead to more realistic implementations of health directed policies that will be fundamental for delivery of high-quality healthcare services
The Prevalence, Pattern, and Burden of Multimorbidity Among Older Adults in Niger State, Northern Nigeria
Objective: While public health planners and practitioners are increasingly aware of the role of inequity in health, the burden of disease measures have not kept pace with this knowledge. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, and patterns of multimorbidity and to understand the burden of multimorbidity in Niger State Nigeria. Method: Data were collected on a cross-section of 734 older adults 60 years and older in Niger northcentral Nigeria. The morbidity was assessed by adopting the list of chronic diseases used in prospective urban and rural epidemiology studies. Collected data was entered electronically via JISC online survey software between October 2021 and February 2022. The data were analyzed by IBM SPSS version 27. Relational association rules were used for determining the pattern of multimorbidity. Results: The prevalence of multimorbidity for the study was 51.9%. The commonest dyad combination of multimorbidity among the respondents is hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The top triad of multimorbidity combinations for three disease conditions is hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Hypertension, diabetes, and peptic ulcer represent the highest disease burden respectively. Conclusion: Health conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and acid-peptic diseases are commonly occurring in clusters of multimorbidity. And they represent the greatest disease burden. To reflect the clinical reality of older adults, identifying the common pattern will provide insight for a more integrative multidisciplinary approach focusing on prevention and better management of these disease conditions in groups
Gen Z’s Willingness to Adopt Plant-Based Diets: Empirical Evidence from Greece, India, and the UK.
Comprising the largest population cohort on this planet, Gen Z presents a future-oriented consumer segment driven by climate change and food. This study sought to investigate Gen Z’s perceptions toward plant-based foods and diets and explore the relationship that attitude components, meal preparation involvement, personal and lifestyle factors, and perceived barriers in adopting a plant-based diet have with willingness to adopt green-eating practices. Using cross-sectional data from university students in Greece, India, and the UK, various tools were employed to determine the factors influencing youths’ consumer behavior toward animal-protein substitutes. PCA indicated the underlying dimensions of students’ viewpoints on plant-based foods, whereas hierarchical and k-means clustering provided the cluster structure. An ordered probit model was estimated to delineate Gen Z’s willingness to adopt plant-based diets and distinguish among mostly unwilling, somewhat willing, and mostly willing youths. Our findings identified two consumer segments, namely proponents and opponents of plant-based foods and diets, with statistically significant differences in the perceived health benefits of plant-based diets, attachment to animal-based proteins, perceived exclusion of animal-based foods, dissatisfaction with plant-based foods’ attributes, and demand for ensuring adequate protein intake. The ordered probit model estimates showed that there is a “homogeneity” in the factors influencing youths’ intention to adopt plant-based diets, with attitude components, meal preparation indicators, perceived barriers to eating “green”, and personal factors, such as self-assessed knowledge of healthy eating and physical activity, being strongly associated with students’ willingness to switch to plant-based diets in all three countries. Mapping potential obstacles and enablers in terms of shifting to more green-eating behaviors, our findings could add information to better understand the factors affecting food choice and youths’ transition to a more sustainable lifestyle

Whole‐Life Embodied Carbon Reduction Strategies in UK Buildings: A Comprehensive Analysis
This paper presents a detailed analysis of embodied carbon (EC) in various case studies using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Through comprehensive assessments, including modules A, B and C, the study evaluates EC across different stages of building life cycles. This study also considers the EC savings achievable through current end‐of‐life strategies in the UK context. As Module A accounts for the highest EC in the case studies, the majority of reduction strategies should focus on this stage. The most impactful strategy for reducing EC emissions involves incorporating Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a replacement for cement. This approach has the potential to achieve a substantial reduction in the EC of concrete within the buildings under investigation, ranging from 60% to 70%. The study reveals that specification strategy can lead to significant Whole Life Embodied Carbon (WLEC) reductions, with the residential building achieving a 30.59% reduction, the college building a 46.86% reduction, and the hotel building a reduction of 23.69%. Effective mitigation strategies, such as utilizing recycled and reclaimed materials, demonstrate promising results, showcasing significant reduction in WLEC emissions in the buildings
Bacillus subtilis as a Novel Biological Repair Technique for Alkali-Activated Slag Towards Sustainable Buildings.
Rebuilding using outdated methods and tearing down the buildings would have a negative impact on the environment without lowering carbon dioxide emissions or increasing sustainability. This study presents a novel approach to repair that considers environmental and sustainable factors. In contrast to conventional repair methods, the use of Bacillus subtilis as an external biological repair technique could offer a novel and sustainable solution, especially when used on alkali-activated slag (AAS) concrete. By breaking down urea into carbonate and ammonium, alkaliphile bacteria can precipitate calcium carbonate. In an environment rich in calcium, the bacteria’s opposing cell wall (CO2−3
) draws in positive calcium anions, which result in the formation of calcite crystals. The pores and crevices in the concrete are filled with these crystals. Incorporating bacteria into the fresh mixing of AAS ingredients is contrasted with using Bacillus subtilis culture in the water curing medium for pure AAS specimens. The effectiveness of both approaches was evaluated. Direct administration of Bacillus subtilis during mixing has a superior outcome regarding mechanical qualities rather than biological therapy, although their effective healing capability in closure of the crack width is similar. The enhancement in compressive and flexural strengths reached 51% and 128% over the control specimens. On the other hand, the healing rate reached nearly 100% for crack widths ranging from 400 to 950 µm. Furthermore, additional studies in this field led to some inferred correlations between the mechanical and durability aspects following healing
