Evolving jurisprudence in clinical legal education: a contemporary study in theory and practice
In concept and practice, clinical legal education is widely affirmed by its global success. As R.J. Wilson puts it, clinical legal education is an “…ongoing and growing revolution that is assaulting the deepest traditions of the legal academy.” It is also asserted by others that “the trend across the globe has shifted from traditional legal education to justice education which is inspired by justice education campaigns.” This success is however marked by the absence of a coherent and articulate jurisprudence that unifies the essence of clinical legal education. This may be largely due to the sheer diversity of forms, conceptualisations and justifications of what has become a movement in recent decades. This globalised movement presents as a complexity of diverse thinking and practice. Nevertheless, upon careful examination, it becomes evident that there are many unifying strands of thinking underpinning clinical legal education that make it possible to theorise clinical legal education whether as pedagogy or legal philosophy. The ambition of this article therefore is to seek to give jurisprudential expression to clinical legal education as an articulate but integral category of legal philosophy. The author will draw on a unique clinical project based in the London Borough of Ealing that has successfully partnered the local law school and the principal human rights and equalities body in the borough to create the Community Advice Programme (CAP) as a substantial expression of the essence of clinical legal education in a modern globalised world. The essay will firstly offer a brief contemporary contextual framework of analysis which reveals a significant level of intersectionality in many parts of the world between clinical legal education and practice and other social, economic, political and cultural developments that challenge traditional models of clinical legal education. The article will then examine clinical legal education in theory and practice and conclude with reflections on an evolving clinical jurisprudence
Performance analysis and design implementation of a novel polymer hollow fiber liquid desiccant dehumidifier with aqueous potassium formate
A novel cross-flow liquid desiccant polymer hollow fiber dehumidifier (PHFD) is investigated numerically in this paper. The main objective of this research is to simulate, and validate the numerical model for future design implementations. The experimentally verified simulation data will be used to develop a set of design and implementation tables and charts as the guidance for selecting the number of fibres and the solution-to-air mass flow ratio of the PHDF under given conditions. A numerical model is developed to simulate the performance of the proposed innovative dehumidifier. This model is validated against three sets of data, i.e. the experimental obtained testing results, analytical correlations and the modelling results from the literature. The influence of various operating conditions such as inlet air properties (i.e. velocity, relative humidity) and inlet solution properties (i.e. temperature, concentration, mass flow rate) on the dehumidification sensible, latent, and total effectiveness, moisture removal rate are numerically analyzed. Dimensionless parameters including the number of heat transfer unit (NTU) and the number of mass transfer unit (NTUm), the solution to air mass flow rate ratio (m*), and the air to solution specific humidity ratio () have been used to evaluate the system performance. The results show that the increase in NTU and NTUm lead to a substantial change in dehumidification effectiveness. When the NTU increases from 0.47 to 7, the sensible effectiveness rises from 0.35 to 0.95. Increasing is another good option for increasing the amount of the absorbed moisture without influencing the latent effectiveness. For an increase of from 1.4 to 2.2, the air inlet and outlet specific humidity difference varies in the range of 0.008 kg/kg and 0.018 kg/kg
Receiving a diagnosis of young onset dementia: a scoping review of lived experiences
Objectives: The personal experience of receiving a diagnosis of young onset dementia (YOD) is often overlooked in a complex assessment process which can require substantial investigation. To understand the lived experiences of younger people undergoing assessment and receiving a diagnosis of dementia, we undertook a thematic synthesis of qualitative studies published until November 2018. The aim of this review was to inform a Delphi study with younger people diagnosed with dementia to learn how diagnostic process could be improved, and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches and help educate professionals concerning key issues.
Method: Systematic searches of appropriate bibliographic databases were conducted to collate literature involving self-reported experiences of diagnosis of YOD. Eight out of 47 initially-identified papers satisfied our search term criteria, and all papers were quality assessed using Walsh & Browne’s criteria for methodological appraisal.
Results: The review of the literature emphasises that delays in diagnosis can often be attributed to (1) delays in accessing help by the younger person, and (2) misattribution of symptoms by the clinician. The impact of diagnosis is influenced by the language used by the clinician, and the younger people diagnosed with dementia and their families’ reactions to the diagnosis vary from feelings of reassurance (in that their symptoms are now explained), to shock and destabilisation.
Conclusion: Understanding the perspective of a younger person undergoing assessment for dementia is important both in terms of promoting future engagement with services and in designing and evaluating interventions to improve the diagnostic process. This review suggests that improving the recognition of presenting symptoms, reducing diagnostic errors and identifying the emotional needs arising from diagnosis are required to improve the diagnostic experience for younger adults

Interactive television? A retrospective analysis of why red button content failed
Interactive television was intended to provide the viewer with an enhanced experience of television. In the late 1990's and early 2000's both public service and subscription based television broadcasters provided the audience with a variety of 'interactive' applications. By 2012 most of the interactive applications had been either reduced in scale and ambition or withdrawn completely. This article is an overview of why the interactive television experiment failed. The methodological framework is a content analysis undertaken in the summer of 2012 which found a small amount of red button content supporting traditional broadcasts. The little found was either pre-existing content or entailed the button’s use as, effectively, the portal to a supplementary television channel. Moving forward the article provides a discussion on why the optimism that television could be an interactive experience in the early 2000's dissolved in a relatively short period of time. The conclusion is that interactive television did not fit the political economy of the media landscape
Improved time-frequency features and electrode placement for EEG-based biometric person recognition
This paper introduces a novel feature extraction method for biometric recognition using EEG data and provides an analysis of the impact of electrode placements on performance. The feature extraction method is based on the wavelet transform of the raw EEG signal. Furthermore, the logarithms of wavelet coefficients are processed using the discrete cosine transform (DCT). The DCT coefficients from each wavelet band are used to form the feature vectors for classification. As an application in the biometrics scenario, the effectiveness of the electrode locations on person recognition is also investigated, and suggestions are made for electrode positioning to improve performance. The effectiveness of the proposed feature was investigated in both identification and verification scenarios. The identification results of 98.24% and 93.28% were obtained using the EEG Motor movement/imagery dataset (MM/I) and the UCI EEG database dataset, respectively, which compares favorably with other published reports while using a significantly smaller number of electrodes. The performance of the proposed system also showed substantial improvements in the verification scenario, when compared with some similar systems from the published literature. A multi-session analysis is simulated using with eyes open and eyes closed recordings from the MM/I database. It is found that the proposed feature is less influenced by time separation between training and testing compared with a conventional feature based on power spectral analysis
Students’ perceptions of the value of electronic feedback—does disciplinary background really matter?
Feedback on student work is a key mechanism for improving learning in Higher Education (HE) and can be provided in a variety of forms. Recently, many institutions have moved to the provision of electronic feedback, although evidence for the effectiveness of this is mixed. While many studies evaluating the students’ perception of feedback are now available, there is little evidence of contrasting perceptions of its value according to different disciplines. This work aims to evaluate the relationship between students’ expectations and perception of feedback, especially electronic, and the disciplinary area of study in HE. Students (n=1017) across different courses from a post-1992 university in the UK were surveyed and categorized into five disciplinary clusters: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Business and Accounting; Art and Design; Media and Languages; and Psychology and Social Care. Perceived relevance as well as the most pertinent features and expectations of the quality of electronic feedback for students varies according to disciplinary cluster and thus closely aligns with a specific cluster’s learning and teaching practices. The findings of this study may help institutions to reflect on the role of electronic feedback as part of their ongoing assessment practice and how teaching in the different disciplines may result in different understandings of the value of electronic feedback
