Humanitarian emergencies of Rohingya older people in Bangladesh: A qualitative study on hopes and reality
The recent influx of Myanmar Rohingya people are allowed in Bangladesh simply due to humanitarian reason, of which older people are amongst the most vulnerable groups. Utilizing integrated methods, the refugee crisis is being managed jointly by various stakeholders. Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) is an NGO that has been providing support to older Rohingya people in the camps since the crisis began through their Age Friendly Support (AFS) centres. These centres provide basic medical treatment, counselling, education, health and wellbeing services, indoor games, and recreational services/activities. Yet, there have not been any studies to understand the expectations of older Rohingya people living in the camps. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine the current YPSA support for older Rohingya people living in the Ukhiya camps and to evaluate their expectations for returning to Myanmar. A pilot survey was conducted on 26th April 2019 in two camp sites and in-depth interviews were also conducted with 4 participants (2 males and 2 females), followed by a focus group discussion. It emerged that older Rohingya people received necessary support services from these YPSA centres and are generally happy with those services. Although they remain grateful to Bangladesh for sheltering them, they are not as happy compared to their lives back in Myanmar. Most of the older people reported that their expectations involved a return to Myanmar as soon as possible as well as seeking justice from the international community so that the Rohingya crisis could soon come to an end
Human factors approaches and models in LOC-I accident analysis and prevention: flight crew resource management techniques as a risk mitigation tool
Increased cockpit automation on modern jet aircraft aim to reduce the risk of Undesired Aircraft State (UAS) instances such as Loss of Control in Flight (LOC-I). Although LOCI globally accounts for only 9% of all analysed accidents IATA has reported that it was responsible for 58% of all accident fatalities in 2017. The focus of this paper is to answer whether Threat and Error Management and Crew Resources Management (CRM) techniques are an efficient risk management tool when facing a LOC-I threat. Three LOCI final aircraft accident reports were analysed to understand the structure of Human Factors (HF) during these flights. Methods from the HF field such as the Generic Error Modelling System (GEMS) and Skill-, Rule- and Knowledge-based (SRK) error approach provided invaluable insights to identify potential findings. A holistic investigation of cognitive structures in flight path management helped to visualise latent conditions and cognitively demanding tasks during LOC-I in routine operations. Bearing in mind the limited number of cases considered in this paper it should be considered as an overview in LOC-I accident analysis. It shows that leadership and teamwork, as essential aspects of CRM training, can serve as key strategies to mitigate HF problems and LOC-I risks
What do undergraduate students understand by excellent teaching?
This article explores undergraduate students’ conceptions of what constitutes excellent teaching. The analysis of semi-structured interviews with students at two English universities yields five qualitatively different conceptions of excellent teaching. In contrast to the current intense policy focus on outcome factors(e.g., graduate employability), students predominantly discern process factors as conducive to excellent teaching: how the subject matter is presented, what the lecturer brings to the teaching process, how students’ personal understanding is supported, and to what extent the questioning and transformation of disciplinary knowledge is facilitated. More importantly, this study demonstrates that an expansion of students’ awareness of the nature of teaching is internally related to the expansion of their awareness of the nature of disciplinary knowledge

Wideband patch array antenna using superstrate configuration for future 5GApplications
In this work, four distinct antenna configurations for future-centric 5G applications are proposed. Initially, a single rectangular patch is designed to operate at the frequency of 28 GHz while maintaining a wide operational band. Performance of the antenna is improved by incorporating an array of identical rectangular elements resulting in a higher gain and wider bandwidth. The proposed arrangement consists of three rectangular elements realized using 0.508-mm thick Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 laminate. The bandwidth is further enhanced by increasing the number of radiating elements in the array from three to five. Evolution of the proposed design is concluded by stacking the superstrate layer above the five-element array structure, thereby improving the gain associated with the proposed configuration. The antenna covers the frequency band from 25.1 GHz to 30.5 GHz under consideration for 5G communications. The proposed antenna occupies a physical footprint of 3.5 × 3.5 cm. Performance of the presented antenna configurations is analyzed using different electromagnetic descriptors including bandwidth, reflection coefficient, gain, radiation patterns, and radiation efficiency obtained using Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio (CST MWS) software. The measured results, obtained after fabrication and testing, demonstrate good overall agreement with the simulated outcome. The formulated design is a prime candidate for deployment in 5G applications of the future
Code-sharing in cost-of-illness calculations: an application to antibiotic-resistant bloodstream infections
Background: More data-driven evidence is needed on the cost of antibiotic resistance. Both Japan and England have large surveillance and administrative datasets. Code sharing of costing models enables reduced duplication of effort in research.
Objective: To estimate the burden of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections (BSIs) in Japan, utilizing code that was written to estimate the hospital burden of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli BSIs in England. Additionally, the process in which the code-sharing and application was performed is detailed, to aid future such use of code-sharing in health economics.
Methods: National administrative data sources were linked with voluntary surveillance data within the Japan case study. R software code, which created multistate models to estimate the excess length of stay associated with different exposures of interest, was adapted from previous use and run on this dataset. Unit costs were applied to estimate healthcare system burden in 2017 international dollars (I6,392 per S. aureus BSI, whilst oxacillin resistance was associated with an additional I$8,155.
Conclusions: S. aureus resistance profiles other than methicillin may substantially impact hospital costs. The sharing of costing models within the field of antibiotic resistance is a feasible way to increase burden evidence efficiently, allowing for decision makers (with appropriate data available) to gain rapid cost-of-illness estimates
Effects of emerging technologies in minimising variations in construction projects in the UK
Globally, the construction industry is confronted by many challenges, especially iterative cost and time overrun; exacerbated by variations that occur during construction phases. Variation is one of the most controversial issues in construction contracts. Modernising the industry through emerging technologies will minimise variations, including other benefits. This study aims to examine the effects of emerging technologies in minimising the occurrence of variations in construction projects. The study used mixed methods with participants limited to those that have effectively implemented some emerging technologies in their recent construction projects. Findings reveal how the combinations of emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), drones, 3 D Laser Scanning, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and others are proving to be useful tools in preventing the occurrence of variation when implemented correctly. The study findings established some potentials of emerging technologies in the construction industry
EEG-based emotion classification using a deep neural network and sparse autoencoder
Emotion classification based on brain–computer interface (BCI) systems is an appealing research topic. Recently, deep learning has been employed for the emotion classifications of BCI systems and compared to traditional classification methods improved results have been obtained. In this paper, a novel deep neural network is proposed for emotion classification using EEG systems, which combines the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Sparse Autoencoder (SAE), and Deep Neural Network (DNN) together. In the proposed network, the features extracted by the CNN are first sent to SAE for encoding and decoding. Then the data with reduced redundancy are used as the input features of a DNN for classification task. The public datasets of DEAP and SEED are used for testing. Experimental results show that the proposed network is more effective than conventional CNN methods on the emotion recognitions. For the DEAP dataset, the highest recognition accuracies of 89.49% and 92.86% are achieved for valence and arousal, respectively. For the SEED dataset, however, the best recognition accuracy reaches 96.77%. By combining the CNN, SAE, and DNN and training them separately, the proposed network is shown as an efficient method with a faster convergence than the conventional CNN
