An exploration of hydration care for nursing home residents living with dementia

    Get PDF
Background Older adults residing in nursing homes are vulnerable to dehydration. Residents living with dementia can experience additional challenges, making it difficult to independently consume sufficient fluids. Aims To describe the experience of hydration care for nursing home residents living with dementia. Methods Observations of hydration care were conducted between 06:00 and 22:45 on one care home unit. Twenty-two residents with dementia were eligible for observation. Conversations with staff and relatives provided further insights. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings Hydration care provision was highly routinised with little flexibility. Residents received limited support to express individual choices, and staff missed opportunities to provide drinks. More fluid was consumed when care staff developed strategies to encourage fluid intake. Conclusion Key factors to optimise hydration care include providing individual support to encourage fluid intake and expression of choice; flexible care routines; and focus on communication and teamworking

The interest in new, innovative food products, diets and ingredients is constantly growing worldwide. Food technology experts are challenged with inventing new ways of product reformulation, usually appealing to the current food trends, such as ‘veganism’, ‘clean label’ and ‘free from’. Modern consumers are more health conscious than ever before, trying to navigate through a store to find the new ‘health conscious’ and ‘clean’ food options. From the food industry’s perspective, complete understanding of consumers’ feelings and needs is dependent upon clear communication through a common language. The communication most often occurs via physical objects, like the product packaging, and the contents within - in line with the linguistic theory of “Signifier and Signified”. This theory perfectly shows how words with a positive connotation such as vegan or organic, present a mental image of ‘healthy’, ‘good’ products which can be linked to a ‘happy’, ‘healthy’ and ‘wealthy’ lifestyle & ideology. The complexity of the information embodied in the verbal capsule is alive and difficult to quantify. Products that inhibit one or more of the characteristics are usually sold under collective trademarks where official certifications play a crucial role

Integration of remote sensing and ground-based non-destructive methods in transport infrastructure monitoring: advances, challenges and perspectives

    Get PDF
High temporal frequency monitoring of transport infrastructures is crucial for implementing effective maintenance prioritisation strategies and prevent major failures. To this extent, ground-based non-destructive testing (NDT) methods have been successfully applied for decades, reaching very high standards of data quality and accuracy. However, routine and systematic campaigns are required over relatively long inspection times for data collection and implementation into reliable infrastructure management systems (IMSs). On the other hand, satellite remote sensing techniques, such as the Multi-Temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) method, have proven effective in monitoring ground displacements of transport infrastructures (roads, railways and airfields), with a much higher temporal frequency of investigation and wider inspection catchment areas. Nevertheless, the integration of information from i) satellite remote sensing and ii) ground-based NDT methods is still an area to be explored in civil engineering. Within this framework, this paper aims to review significant stand-alone applications in these two areas of technology for transport infrastructure monitoring. Furthermore, recent advances, main challenges and future perspectives arising from their integration are discussed. Contents of this paper are organised within the context of an invited keynote talk given at the 2021 IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on Geoscience, Electronics and Remote Sensing (AGERS – 2021)

Geographical and epidemiological characteristics of sporadic coronavirus disease 2019 outbreaks from June to December 2020 in China: an overview of environment-to-human transmission events

    Get PDF
China quickly brought the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 under control during the early stage of 2020; thus, this generated sufficient confidence among the public, which enabled them to respond to several sporadic coronavirus disease 2019 outbreaks. This article presents geographical and epidemiological characteristics of several sporadic coronavirus disease 2019 outbreaks from June to December 2020 in China. The data show that the coronavirus disease may be transmitted by imported cold-chain food and international exchange, and this viewpoint deserves our great attention

Interrogating the Criminalisation of Same-Sex Sexual Activity: A Study of Commonwealth Africa

    Get PDF
The Abrahamic faiths and received colonial law have been identified as the driving force behind the criminalisation of homosexual activity in most of the Commonwealth States of Africa. This article, therefore, seeks to question the role of criminal law in proscribing sexual activities amongst consenting adults of the same gender in Commonwealth African states. A recurring question in the paper is the propriety of criminalising a consensual conduct amongst consenting adults in private when no harm or injury is done to other citizens or the state in line with JS Mill’s principle of harm. The article finds that the misconception that the main aim of criminal law is to legislate the moral values of the majority, forms support for the view that homosexuality can be learned and unlearned and if this is the case, a paternalistic approach by the state would help mould citizens’ behaviour. A comparative and case study approach was adopted for the discussion in the article. Four Commonwealth African states, namely, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda were selected as case studies. The article recommends a much more robust approach for the support of sexual minorities in the Commonwealth

Performance Evaluation of PoW Blockchain in Wireless Mobile IoT networks.

    No full text
There has been widespread adoption of blockchain in the wireless domain, especially with the growing interest and potential of Internet of Things (IoT). While the properties of blockchain namely trustworthy transactions and decentralization of authority have opened up numerous opportunities, new challenges pertinent to security and performance have emerged in the presence of wireless communications and mobility. Although current literature provides extensive analysis of blockchain networks when connectivity is offered by static and wired links, there has been little attention in the wireless space. Wireless blockchain analysis has been pursued under specific and simplified assumptions which are insufficient for generalized blockchain performance in real world scenarios. Our work tries to fill this gap by covering a large space of blockchain and network based parameters such as the block interval, the number of miners, node mobility, transmission power and network density and present comprehensive performance results obtained using the NS-3 simulator. Among a number of interesting results, our experiments reveal that transaction throughput is greatly influenced by node mobility patterns, a higher percentage of miners is detrimental for blockchain security and wireless network density and power transmission values beyond particular thesholds are required for block transmission behavior similar to the one observed in wired-static blockchain networks preventing randomness due to packet losses

The impact of cooking and digestion on the phenolic acid content of selected Nigerian and UK grown wholegrains

Wholegrains are a good source of phenolic acids (PAs), which can significantly contribute to their beneficial health properties. Thus, their bioactivity will depend on their bioaccessibility and bioavailability, which in turn can be significantly affected by cooking and digestion processes
