Nordic Environmental Permitting Processes : Results from a comparative study of environmental law and processes in Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Finland
No full textEnvironmental permitting procedures have been in the focus of the public debate in all the Nordic countries for some years, leading us to perform a study comparing the decision-making procedures in the five Nordic countries. We focused on two scenarios for starting and changing industrial activities. First, we describe environmental law, the permit procedure and system for supervision and enforcement in each country. Thereafter, highlights are presented from two workshops with representatives from the administrations and different stakeholders in our countries. The discussion focuses on whether the environmental permitting systems are integrated or divided into different procedures, case processing time, time limited or 'eternal' permits, changes in given permits and the relation between the permitting body and the supervising and enforcing authorities of the regulation in given permits

No full textOur Vision 2030 describes what it will take to make the Nordic Region the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. The sheer ambition makes it important to monitor progress closely. To this end, the Nordic Council of Ministers commissioned Rambøll Management Consulting to conduct baseline measurements back in 2021. The idea was to map out the starting point for work on the vision. This status report follows up on the baseline measurements and assesses progress towards realising the vision. It is based on the 45 indicators adopted by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021 and the methodology used for the baseline report. Overall, the 2023 status report shows that the Nordic Region remains on track to become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. This is particularly true for the visions of a competitive Nordic Region and a socially sustainable Nordic Region. However, there is room for improvement with regard to the visions for a green Nordic Region

No full textThe Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen) is the joint genebank and knowledge center for genetic resources in the Nordic countries. Our mission is to conserve and promote the sustainable use of genetic diversity among animals, forests and plants that are important for Nordic agriculture and forestry. Statistics: Forest Seeds and Plants in the Nordic Region – Version 2023 is the second edition in a biennial statistics report on forest seed and plant material in the Nordic countries. The first edition was published in 2021. This edition has been expanded by including more statistics and more species than the first report, as well as including more recent data from the years 2020 and 2021. The report compiles statistics and reports contributed by representatives of each country in the NordGen Forest Regeneration Council

The project has produced information on the best practices and put together a situational picture on the evaluation of the impacts of youth organisation activities in different Nordic countries. The best practices will provide good suggestions for youth organisations on how to improve the quality of their activities, while a broader situational picture will create added value especially for public administration

The words “Peace and Security" in the title Iceland’s Presidency Programme for the Nordic Council in 2024 refer to the need to ensure the safety of the Nordic countries and their allied nations in the Arctic, the necessity of de-escalation in the region and placing greater emphasis on peaceful solutions. A new future vision for security in the Arctic region is needed. However, the word "security" also refers to other aspects related to the well-being and future of the Nordic countries, especially the inhabitants of the Arctic.
“He went back into the closet” : Older LGBTI people´s interactions with health and social care in the Nordic countries
No full textThe situation for LGBTI people in the Nordic countries has changed radically the last decades. This has resulted in increased access to social and legal rights, enhanced protection against discrimination, increased visibility and more opportunities to organising in associations and make connections. Nevertheless, studies show that a gender identity or sexual orientation that does not follow the conventional norm still significantly increases the risk of ill health. How do these conditions affect older LGBTI people's opportunities in ageing and what happens in contact with health and social care? The Nordic Council of Ministers has initiated a project that will contribute to increased knowledge about the living conditions and quality of life of older LGBTI people, especially in their encounter with health and social care. The report is based on publications consisting of both quantitative and qualitative studies
