    Planetary Technology and Reactionary Accelerationism

    This chapter explores the techno-politics of the reactionary right as a qualified embrace of technology to ethno-nationalist ends. It examines three moments in this problematic embrace of technology: the work of Heidegger, the work of Junger, and the work of Nick Land. In Heidegger, we find an apparent rejection of technology, but also the desire for a traversal or overcoming of the technological as the final enframing of Being. Junger offers a proto-cyberpunk integration between the human and technology focused first around the worker and then, in the post-war writing, around the anarch and the tech-entrepreneur. Land's reactionary accelerationism is the embrace of technology as a mode of differentiation and stratification between human groups naturalized in pseudo-scientific forms. What we trace is a certain naturalization of technology and an ethno-national identification of its forms on the reactionary right

    Beginner-coaches and connectivity of knowledge: Real-world coaching and self-reported importance of prior playing experience

    In what amounts to essentially being a part two to our previous work with six beginner-coaches that found noticeable benefits to reflective practice, yet a number of possible drawbacks such as time constraints and at times over-focusing on negative emotions (Hamblin & Crisp, 2022), we build upon the aims of that study that related to what beginner-coaches (in recreational sport fields) considered ideal coach learning within in-situ, practice-based contexts. Through revisiting the data of the first study (Hamblin & Crisp, 2022) and exploring an additional theme related to how the beginner-coaches identified sporting experience as a beneficial prerequisite to their own coaching practice, the present study sought to further investigate, and build upon, the findings and aspects of the first study. Continuing to explore how beginner-coaches who operate more within recreational (although still competitive) sport fields perceive in-situ, ideal learning, and continuing the same methodological approach, the present study conducted semi-structured interviews with another five beginner-coaches, adding to the six in the first study for a total of 11 participants. Transcriptions were analysed using thematic analysis and the themes found included sporting experience, traditional learning, and the benefits of reflective practice which highlights the ways all of the beginner-coaches (within both ‘part one’ and the present study – ‘part two’) felt they learn best. Importantly, these findings showed the self-reported importance of actually coaching (‘real world’ applications) and, of particular note, what were considered by the beginner-coaches to be the significant benefits of having accrued playing experience prior to starting coaching.     Predicting weight category–specific performance zones for Olympic, World, and European Weightlifting Competitions

J Strength Cond Res 37(10): 2038–2045, 2023—Understanding the total likely required weight category to achieve a specific rank within a specific competition can aid in the long-term and short-term preparation and tactics for performance teams. The primary objective of this investigation was to develop a set of predictive models for new weight categories across 5 performance zones for 3 major weightlifting competitions. Performance total (Ptot) data for top 15 male athletes were obtained from the International Weightlifting Federation website from 1998 to 2020 across the Olympics, and World and European Championships. A second-order polynomial regression was conducted with 95% confidence, and predictive intervals were calculated. The average of the newly contested body mass was then used as the intercept. Predictions were compared against current performances of the new weight categories up to the 2020 Olympics. Results revealed that the models for all competition types varied in their predictive ability for each performance zone, across each new weight category. On average, predicted Ptot displayed a difference from actual Ptot of 3.65 ± 2.51% (12.46 ± 9.16 kg), 0.78 ± 3.29% (2.26 ± 10.08 kg), and −1.13 ± 3.46% (−4.32 ± 11.10 kg) for the Olympics, and World and European Championships, respectively. The results suggest that the predictive models may be a good indicator of future performances; however, the models may have greater efficacy in some weight categories and performance zones than others

    The aesthetics of the Romantic Period and women’s writing

    While the aesthetics of the Romantic period are commonly associated with the work of a limited number of male poets, the gendered nature of such thought in the era ensured that women writers commented extensively and in unprecedented numbers on matters of taste. In her polemical works, the radical Mary Wollstonecraft argued that the philosopher Edmund Burke had created an aesthetic that was not only gendered but fundamentally inegalitarian. In response, she proposed a retreat from the social to the natural and a rejection of convention in favor of originality. But other women writers, while also rejecting Burke’s gendering of the sublime and the beautiful, were suspicious of Wollstonecraft’s account of originality. As they reassessed how accurate aesthetic judgments could be made within the social space, they reshaped Romantic aesthetics and created the conditions for realism

    The effects of simulated vision impairment on performance in football

    Footballers with vision impairment (VI) are eligible to compete in the Para sport if they meet a minimum impairment criteria (MIC) based on measures of their visual acuity (VA) and/or visual field. Despite the requirements of the International Paralympic Committee Athlete Classification Code that each sport uses an evidence-based classification system, VI football continues to use a medical-based system that lacks evidence to demonstrate the relationship between impairment and performance in the sport. The aim of this study was to systematically simulate vision loss to establish the minimum level of impairment that would affect performance in futsal. Nineteen skilled sighted players completed tests of individual technical skill and anticipation performance under six levels of simulated blur that decreased both VA and contrast sensitivity (CS). VA needed to be reduced to a level of acuity that represents worse vision than that currently used for inclusion in VI football before meaningful decreases in performance were observed. CS did not have a clear effect on football performance. These findings produce the first evidence for the minimum impairment criteria in VI football and suggest a more severe degree of impairment may be required for the MIC

    The stability of the deadlift three repetition maximum

    This study investigated the stability of three repetition maximum (3RM) strength during the deadlift. Eleven participants performed four testing sessions comprising a one repetition maximum test and 3RM tests separated by 48 h. Preparedness was assessed before each testing session using countermovement jumps and by measuring barbell velocity during each set of deadlifts. Trivial statistically significant differences were determined for the 3RM between T1 and both T2 ( p = 0.012; ES [95% CI] = −0.1 [−0.58, 0.41]) and T3 ( p = 0.027; ES [95% CI] = −0.09 [−0.57, −0.43]). No significant differences were noted between T2 and T3 ( p = 0.595; ES [95% CI] = 0.01 [−0.49, 0.50]). No significant differences in jump height ( p = 0.071), time-to-take-off ( p = 0.862), eccentric displacement ( p = 0.209), or mean force during any countermovement jump sub-phase were found between each session ( p = 0.529–0.913). Small differences in barbell mean velocity were found between both T1–T2 (effect size statistics (ES) = −0.21–0.27) and T2–T3 (ES = 0.31–0.48), while trivial differences were found at others. Therefore, 3RM deadlift strength appears stable enough over a microcycle to continue using traditionally recommended heavy/light programming strategies

    Distributed Antenna in Drone Swarms: A Feasibility Study

    Unmanned aerial vehicles offer a versatile platform for the realization of phased array antenna systems, enabling multiple antenna elements to be distributed spatially in an agile, flexible, and cost-effective manner. Deploying individual antenna elements on single drones and using a swarm of such drones to create an antenna array has the potential to be a disruptive technology. Antenna directivity is limited by the physical aperture size as compared to the wavelength of the radiation being transmitted/received, with electrically larger antennas giving a higher directivity at the cost of an increased size and weight. The authors presented a brief feasibility study using a simple mathematical model implemented in software to explore the predicted performance of the novel UAV deployed antenna array, the limitations of such a system, and the potential applications where such a capability would be beneficial. The authors concluded that it is possible to achieve a suitably coherent superposition of electromagnetic radiation at frequencies of ~1 GHz and lower with current global positioning technologies which offer centimeter scale positioning accuracy and with current drone positioning systems used to control drone swarms

    Indexing Esport Performance

    The assessment of an athlete’s performance can play a key role in determining their current state, their readiness to compete, the impact of an experimental manipulation, and/or the influence of an intervention. At present, there is limited empirical evidence stating the indicators that encapsulate individual performance within any esport. To identify the variables that are historically associated with indicating Counter-Strike: Global Offensive performance, a literature review was conducted. Identified variables were accumulated and presented to three technical expert panels composed of world-class esport athletes, researchers, and practitioners. We utilized a modified Delphi method to provide direction concerning the examination of performance in esports. The expert panelists presented numerous opinions on what encapsulates performance, considerations for best practices, and concerns associated with the semantics of performance. This study presents the opinions of various domain-specific experts and encourages the use of more explicit terminology when discussing performance measurement. It was the intention of the project to generate an open discussion rather than draw a unified conclusion on best practices
