    Mineral Districts in Arizona

    The mineral districts of Arizona delineated in this report are based on the Database for Mineral Districts in the State of Arizona (Richard, 2002) which was in turn based on Metallic Mineral Districts of Arizona (Keith et al., 1983). The newly updated mineral districts data files maintain the previously defined areas that contain mineralization, along with all the original associated metadata. This includes the district classification scheme devised by Keith et al. (1983) for the purpose of outlining areas with mines and linked activity connected to local mineralization and alteration with consistent geologic characteristics. The utility in doing so originally was to provide a sense for the broad characteristics of the types of deposits found in individual districts where only one category was fit to each district. New mineral districts were not added to the database. Instead, this report appends the original data with an additional classification scheme based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) mineral deposit models with origins from open-file reports by Erickson (1982) and Ludington (1985), but officially compiled in Cox and Singer (1986). Additions since then have been released through the USGS to increase the number of deposit types with appropriate models (e.g., Orris, 1998; many others). Mineral deposits discussed in their reports contain descriptive geologic characteristics for a large range of specific mineral deposits and their regional geologic environments. The goal of developing the models was to help assess domestic mineral resources by giving geologists the ability to compare their observations with collective knowledge and experience from a diverse group of geologists (Cox et al., 1986). These classifications also served as the basis for geoenvironmental mineral deposits that describe the fundamental control of mineral deposits on their environment prior to mining activity and the subsequent conditions that occur after mining has commenced (du Bray, 1995). Progress was more recently made and reported on in Seal and Foley (2002). The update to Arizona’s mineral district database therefore serves two purposes: 1) to assist with future mineral exploration and resource assessment and 2) to provide a framework for assessing the environmental impacts mineral districts might have on their local environments.Documents in the AZGS Documents Repository collection are made available by the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) and the University Libraries at the University of Arizona.     Pedagogy of Absence: An Arts-Based Autoethnographic Exploration of my Shifting Positionality and Subjectivity During Doctoral Studies in a Justice-Oriented Art Education Program

    Art education in the United States stands at a critical crossroads. Amid escalating political attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives; the defunding of public education; and ideological censorship of research and scholarship, the field faces a renewed assault on its capacity to imagine and enact just, emancipatory futures (Ellsworth et al., 2022). More than 35 U.S. states have introduced or passed legislation aimed at defunding DEI programming and restricting how race and history are taught in public education (Flaherty, 2023; Mitchell, 2023). These attacks are not isolated events; they are part of a broader historical continuum of systemic oppression that seeks to reassert Eurocentric, White-dominant ideologies at the expense of historically minoritized and socially marginalized voices (Kraehe, 2015; Lawton, 2018). Within this volatile sociopolitical climate, racially minoritized students and scholars face intensified marginalization as critical pedagogies, decolonial methodologies, and research practices are delegitimized and defunded altogether. The dismantling of DEI efforts and the weaponization of educational funding cuts not only suppress emancipatory conversations about race, identity, and power but also threaten the very survival of educational spaces where critical inquiry and cultural self-determination can flourish (Bell, 1980; Santos, 2001). This coordinated rollback of rights and resources demands urgent scholarly intervention on the teaching practices of those educators who not only operate under the panopticon of dominant power but also continue to confront them with critical art pedagogical methodologies that help students attain critical consciousness of their relationship to the education system and equip them with tools to engage with difficult discussions on oppressive social categorization of race, gender, sexuality, age, caste, class, and ability (Wilson 2018, Kraehe 2015, Kraehe et al. 2015). Using arts-based autoethnography as both method and site of inquiry, this doctoral research investigates how critical art pedagogy can elicit consciousness of the complexities of subjectivity and positionality for a racially minoritized student in a graduate program in art education. Drawing from Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of Nepantla (2009), this study engages with the in-betweenness of being both researcher and researched to interrogate the lived experiences of a South Asian doctoral student navigating a justice-oriented art education program in the United States. The study is guided by two key research questions: (1) What insights, generated through arts-based autoethnography, can be gleaned by reflecting on the critical pedagogical practices of art educators in a justice-oriented program? (2) How do these reflections lead to the emergence and shift in critical consciousness of a graduate student in such a program? Grounded in phenomenological hermeneutics (Gadamer, 1975; Visse et al., 2019), critical race theory (Bell, 1980), and Paulo Freire’s concept of critical consciousness (1993), this research uses poetic reflections and visual journaling to uncover the generative potential of critical art pedagogy. These aesthetic encounters function not only as modes of expression but also as tools for unpacking the way sociocultural influences shaped my identity and subjectivity within my doctoral studies in art education. By linking personal narrative along with visual journal and poetic reflection with broader institutional and political critique, the study reveals how critical art pedagogy helps examine the dominant frameworks, such as the monoculture of knowledge and productivity that has historically foreclosed emancipatory educational possibilities (Santos, 2001). This dissertation positions critical art pedagogy as a counter-hegemonic epistemology (Matthews, 2018; Pratt, 2004) capable of transforming curriculum and consciousness. It contributes to art education scholarship by centering the voices and experiences of racially minoritized faculty and students, voices that remain largely marginalized and absent in dominant art education narratives. In doing so, it asserts that education, especially art education, must remain a space of critical inquiry, personal liberation, and collective transformation. The emerging discoveries of this study generated the theoretical framework of the "Pedagogy of Absence," which articulates how silence, erasure, and marginalization function in educational spaces and how critical art pedagogy can be a mode of refusal and resistance to those conditions. It proposes absence as an archive of embodied knowledge that often remains unspoken and silenced in dominant Western art education practice, especially for teachers and students from historically minoritized groups. By positing pedagogical tension as a possible site of knowledge production rather than an obstacle, this autoethnographic research expands methodological frontiers in art education by integrating visual and poetic data as legitimate epistemic contributions to theory-building, offering transformative implications for curriculum development, teacher education, and the future of justice-centered pedagogies.Release after 10/01/202

    Ten Choral Arrangements of Chinese Folk Songs Appropriate for Western Choirs

    Chinese folk songs are an important and treasured part of the cultural fabric of thecountry. They variously feature beautiful, poignant, welcoming and joyful texts and music that reflect the life, labor and love of the Chinese people. Many Chinese folk songs have universal themes, which make them appropriate for Western choirs to perform. In this study I have selected, analyzed and introduced ten choral arrangements of Chinese folk songs that are appropriate for performance by Western choirs. These folk songs feature universal themes, such as family life, love, nature and hope. Information about the folk song collectors and arrangers is included as are recommended editions and distributors. I have provided analyses of the musical features including incorporation of source materials, as well as harmony, texture, form, tempo and expressive elements. I also share both word-for-word and idiomatic English translations of the original texts, as well as historical and cultural context. Finally, I have created International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transliterations for the texts. Through this study, I hope to inspire Western choral conductors to explore and program these outstanding Chinese folk song arrangements

    Cross-Polarized Confocal Microscopy as a Method for Sub-Surface Damage Detection in Glass and Crystalline Substrates

    This body of work discusses the modeling and design of a prototype Cross-Polarized Confocal Microscope used to image sub-surface defects/damage at depths < 25 um below the surface of transparent glass and crystalline substrates common to precision optics applications as a result of lapping and polishing processes. Discussions of motivations and existing technologies are also discussed. This work delves into the basic principles behind confocal microscopy, polarization, and their crossover in this application. The focus of this work was to create a simulation capable of benchmarking the relative improvements in imaging performance using cross-polarized confocal microscopy (XPCM) as compared to standard confocal techniques. An overview of the FRED model and scripting within the model for automation, as well as the design process is given, and final simulated results are shown. To conclude, a summary of the prototype build completed by the Laser Optics Fundamentals Group in Corning Inc, Sullivan Park using this body of work as a design basis, with initial SSD measurement results is covered.Thesis not available (per author’s request

    Multispectral Fundus Imaging with Fluidic Lens Technology

    A phoropter is used to evaluate visual acuity and diagnose wavefront errors in the human eye. To improve its speed and objectivity, this study incorporates fluidic lenses, which use a translucent membrane whose curvature is controlled by fluid pressure to adjust optical power. Three fluidic lenses are used to correct defocus and astigmatism. This dissertation presents an enhanced phoropter system integrating fundus imaging for simultaneous measurement of refractive errors and diagnosis of retinal conditions. Optical modeling across multiple wavelengths was performed to achieve a wide field of view (at least 30 degrees) with high resolution. A multispectral light source enhances the visualization of retinal features at varying depths. The optical performance of the system was assessed using various objective lens configurations. Fluidic lens parameters were optimized via ray tracing. Illumination was optimized across wavelengths to maximize efficiency, radiometric safety was verified to comply with exposure limits, and techniques were implemented to minimize corneal back-reflections

    Covariant Theory of Electromagnetism and Radiation in Vacuum and Media

    I study radiation emission by classical relativistic charged particles interacting with strong electromagnetic fields including the case of motion in vacuum (Larmor radiation) as well as in matter (Cherenkov radiation). I employ a consistent covariant formulation throughout the thesis. I provide detailed description of the covariant constitutive relations and constitutive tensor which relates the electromagnetic fields to the displacement fields. I then construct Lorentz-invariant generalizations of the electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, and index of refraction, explicitly discussing the case of an isotropic medium. I describe and characterize radiation reaction in classical electromagnetism using the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac (LAD) and Landau-Lifshitz (LL) particle equations of motion. I contrast these approaches with the Eliezer-Ford-O'Connell (EFO) equation, which improves on some of the shortcomings of both the LAD and LL equations. I also show that the EFO equation has a novel feature; the invariant acceleration magnitude of a particle can be limited in certain field configurations. This motivates a search for a more general context which would contain a universal upper limit to acceleration as a general principle. I compare the limiting acceleration of the EFO equation of motion to the limiting field strength theory of electromagnetism, the Born-Infeld (BI) theory. I show that BI theory places an upper limit on the invariant electric-like eigenvalue of the electromagnetic field tensor. I discuss the formulation of BI theory, and nonlinear electromagnetic theories in general, in terms of the constitutive tensor introduced in the context of matter. I then calculate the invariant dielectric constants corresponding to a nonlinear theory. I discuss the effects of the limiting field properties of BI theory using the example of relativistic heavy ion collisions. The emission of Cherenkov radiation by a particle moving faster than the local speed of light within a medium is another radiation phenomenon I explore as it has not yet been addressed in a manner consistent with the relativistic formulation of Larmor radiation. Cherenkov radiation does not require acceleration. Using the covariant formulation, I contrast the Cherenkov with the Larmor radiation process in vacuum which does requires acceleration. I use the formulation of covariant constitutive relations to derive a covariant form of the Cherenkov radiation reaction force on a uniformly moving charged particle in an isotropic medium. I then discuss how our formalism can be generalized to allow for acceleration of the particle and derive a unified Larmor-Cherenkov radiation reaction force

    The Gold Medal Standard: Musicking and Gendered Sport

    Gendered differences in sport have long been used to create and maintain Olympic socio-cultural identities that align with traditional definitions of masculinity, femininity, and of an athlete. Music within Olympic competitions has been a tool to present socio-cultural identities that align with traditional definitions of masculinity and femininity. Among the seven Olympic individual competitions that incorporate music, men have only physically competed in two; figure skating in the Winter Olympics, since 1908, and breaking in the Summer Olympics, in 2024. Not only is the use music usage gendered feminine within Olympic sport, but the kinds of music that are generally accepted for use within an athlete’s Olympic performance have also been circumscribed. This dissertation has cataloged over 700 uses of music in individual competitions. The types of music used, and when they were utilized, are used to identify acceptable musical practices within specific sport and within the Olympics altogether. Additionally, interviews from people involved in Hip Hop culture, such as dancers, deejays, and promoters, offer additional insight to the use of music in the breaking events. Since Olympic sport has been linked to promoting masculinity, women’s inclusion has been carefully tailored to maintain that masculinity through differences in the opportunities presented to male and female athletes. The music used in Olympic competition, as outlined in this dissertation, and the nature of the competitor’s relationship to the music, such as performance, is indicative of how almost all of the international federations that oversee sports that embed music use musical performance as an element that further separates men’s and women’s divisions of sporting events. Those sports with musical performance are typically associated with femininity. The sports that use music in the same way for both men’s and women’s divisions, such as figure skating and breaking, still embed differences in the music tailored to those events to sonically show the difference between the two to maintain an Olympic socio-cultural standard that aligns with traditional definitions of masculinity and femininity. These findings provide insight into how musical competition is curated to have success at the Olympic level. The music used in sport must be cost-effective, serve an external purpose (i.e., connect to a younger audience, pander to the home crowd, or promote national cultural values), and align with long-standing traditions of gendered virtuosity with women performing to music but men distancing their bodies from that musical connection. Additionally, these findings indicate that while music in isolation is not inherently gendered, the connection to Olympic sport over the past 116 years have gendered sports that require a musical connection as feminine

    Population Ecology and Conservation Translocation of the Narrow-Headed Gartersnake in Central Arizona

    The narrow-headed gartersnake (Thamnophis rufipunctatus) is a federally threatened species endemic to the Mogollon Rim in central Arizona and western New Mexico. This species has declined its range primarily due to habitat loss, degradation and invasive species. Additional information on this species’ ecology, particularly empirical estimates of movement and demographic parameters, are particularly important for the management and conservation of this species. We conducted a three-year mark-recapture study of narrow-headed gartersnakes in Canyon Creek in central Arizona. In chapter 1, we compared capture rates, individual growth rates, movement, and apparent survival between narrow-headed gartersnakes and a syntopic, non-imperiled species of gartersnake, the western terrestrial gartersnake (Thamnophis elegans). While we captured more western terrestrial gartersnakes during our study, we did not find marked differences between these two species in the metrics we examined. We also documented the successful application of passive PIT tag arrays for monitoring PIT-tagged gartersnakes. In chapter 2, we evaluated the post-release growth, movement, and apparent survival zoo-born narrow-headed gartersnakes from the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo’s breeding program and compared these metrics to those of wild narrow-headed gartersnakes. We released four different groups of zoo-born individuals representing two cohorts (young-of-year and holdover). We documented multiple instances of survival across one and two winters post-release by zoo-born individuals from The Arizona Center for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo. We did not find marked differences between zoo-born and wild individuals although holdover individuals tended to have the greatest movement distances and lowest apparent survival. Our results can provide guidelines for the future use of conservation translocations for narrow-headed gartersnake recovery

    RISING FROM THE FLAMES: TRACKING NATURE'S RESILIENCE AFTER THE BLUE CUT FIRE

    Post-fire recovery assessment is critical for wildland-urban interface management and climate adaptation planning, yet quantitative relationships between environmental controls and regeneration success remain poorly understood in Mediterranean ecosystems. This research addresses the fundamental problem of predicting recovery patterns through comprehensive dual-index analysis combining Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Normalized Burn Ratio assessments of vegetation regeneration following the 2016 Blue Cut Fire across 37,020 acres in San Bernardino County, California. Six time periods of Landsat 8/9 imagery spanning 2016-2025 were processed using automated workflows, integrated with comprehensive topographic analysis quantifying slope gradient and aspect orientation effects through advanced statistical modeling. The dual-index approach provided unprecedented cross-validation of recovery patterns, with NDVI analysis achieving 98% successful natural regeneration averaging 129.0% of pre-fire conditions while NBR analysis confirmed 80% significant improvement from immediate post-fire conditions. Results revealed counter-intuitive patterns challenging conventional ecological theory: moderate slopes achieved 132.6% recovery compared to flat slopes at 124.6%, contradicting erosion control predictions. Quadratic regression modeling provided exceptional validation with R² = 0.9573, mathematically proving optimal recovery occurs at 26.5° slope gradient. Circular regression explained 87.3% of aspect-related recovery variation, with north-facing slopes achieving superior recovery across both indices. The convergence of findings across independent analytical approaches demonstrates that environmental controls explain greater than 85% of recovery variation, providing robust quantitative frameworks for predicting post-fire regeneration success. Results suggest Mediterranean fire-adapted ecosystems possess exceptional natural recovery potential, enabling resource managers to prioritize limited restoration funds toward other ecosystem priorities rather than widespread intervention following similar fire events.This item is part of the MS-GIST Master's Reports collection.
