Welcome Professor Eric Kocher to ENVS! 
 
like to call “domestic” encounters 
with “planetary” forces. In other 
words, I am interested in how some 
of the big ideas that shape the work 
of our department (climate change, 
biodiversity loss, injustice, 
conservation, etc.) intersect with the 
smallness of our daily lives (grocery 
shopping, parenthood, sunsets, etc.). 
Similarly, my teaching often asks 
students to explore how we 
encounter these ideas in art, 
literature, film, journalism, and 
digital media, and how the treatment 
of these ideas influences not only 
how we treat the environments in 
which we live, but how we construct 
policy, engage in activism, and make 
decisions individually and together. 
Outside of teaching, I spend most of 
my time with my family and trying 
to learn how far I am capable of 
running. 
 
 
 
 
Greetings from the Chandler Center 
for Environmental Studies where I 
have settled nicely into my office 
and am desperately trying to keep 
the moss terrarium my wife bought 
me this summer alive. Some of you 
reading this might already know me, 
as this will be my tenth year 
teaching at Wofford, most of which 
has been in the English department 
where I’ve primarily taught courses 
about poetry and environmental 
literature, but as the newest addition 
to the Environmental Studies 
Department, and as our 
department’s “humanist,” I wanted 
to say how excited I am to be here 
and to share a little about myself and 
my work. 
I have an MFA in Creative Writing 
from the University of Houston and 
my writing is concerned with what I 
(Above) Dr. Bradham traveled to Brazil this 
summer with Sophia Bernstein ’25 and 
Katie Garner ’25 to research the role of 
large mammals in forest regeneration. 
 
In May, students enjoyed travelling to Copenhagen with Dr. Telligman 
as part of her Sustainability Science course to study the city’s culture of 
sustainability.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
American Museum of Natural History – MAT in Earth Sciences  
The Richard Gilder Graduate School at the 
American Museum of Natural History in New York 
City is offering a unique opportunity to earn a fully-
funded MAT in Earth Sciences. This teaching 
fellowship will provide coursework to participants 
interested in careers in middle and high school 
STEM education. 
Per their program description – All degree 
candidates will receive free tuition, books, and a 
$30,000 living stipend. In return, candidates commit 
to teaching in a high-needs school for three years 
upon completion of the year-long (June-August) 
program.  
Program alumni recent 2 years of funded 
induction with career development and support in 
classroom management and curriculum 
development. 
Applications are being accepted until January 15, 
2024, and prospective students are encouraged to 
attend an on-site information session or speak with 
a faculty member to discuss the program. Learn

There’s Nothing We Can’t Do by Kennedy Smith ’23 
 
with a thick door, but it’s HOT, dark, and hard 
to breathe. It was kind of the perfect anxiety-
producing storm for me. However, as Dr. 
Bradham says, “there’s nothing you can’t do.” 
So I entered the Temazcal last, closest to the 
door of course, but when our guide Tara shut 
the door, panic settled in. Dr. Bradham’s 
motherly instincts kicked in as she rushed to sit 
next to me and proceeded to help me focus on 
pressing the tips of my middle fingers into the 
tips of my thumbs and slowly taking the 
“cooling breaths” that Tara taught us. There 
were moments the panic would start to bubble 
back up inside me, but then I would look at my 
friends around me, feel the embrace of a 
reassuring glance, and take another cooling 
breath. So here I am, a girl who avoided 2-
minute elevator rides, 33 minutes deep into the 
most confining experience of my life. Once we 
finished our 35-minute Temazcal ceremony, I 
semi-crawled out of the tiny door and felt 
empowered. As a group, we sprinted to the 
ocean (Dr. Valde leading the pack), which was a 
little more than a stones-throw away, and we 
dove into the cold water. The world has never 
seemed as open to me as it did at that moment. 
How expansive the sunset was. How the ocean 
went on farther than our eyes could see. It was 
refreshing, it was eye-opening, and most 
importantly it showed me that fear doesn’t get to 
limit my life because there’s nothing I can’t do. 
The same is true for you, there’s nothing we 
can’t do. 
If you’re reading this and you have a fear of 
confined spaces, welcome to the club. I am the 
poster child of claustrophobia. When I’ve felt 
trapped in the past, I start to feel my heart 
pounding, my body starts to shake, and for lack 
of a better term, panic ensues.  So much so, that 
I once walked up 15 flights of stairs to avoid an 
elevator ride. Don’t judge me… we all have our 
struggles. So let me tell you about the time I 
spent 35 minutes with 11 people in an enclosed 
cement igloo! Obviously, that’s an 
oversimplification, and spoiler alert I survived, 
but it was a pretty big deal for me. This interim 
I had the amazing opportunity to go to 
Nicaragua with Dr. Bradham and Dr. Valde 
(shoutout). And let me tell you, it was 
beautiful. I can go on and on about all the fun 
things we did. However, I’ve found that most of 
the time I bask in life’s fun moments, but I 
grow in the challenging ones. The Temazcal 
ceremony was a moment of challenge in my 
life, and I grew. Your first thought when you 
hear the word “Temazcal” might be Mexican 
food in downtown Spartanburg, but I can 
assure you this was very different. A Temazcal 
ceremony is a traditional sweat lodge ceremony 
that includes pouring water over extremely hot 
rocks while you’re in a concealed space. The 
water/rock combo produces a thick cloud of 
steam, increasing the temperature aka the 
amount you sweat. So get this: not only is this 
ceremony in an igloo-shaped/sized contraption

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Nova Southeastern University – MPS in Marine Environmental Science  
The Halmos College of Natural Sciences and 
Oceanography at Nova Southeastern offers four degree 
options including the Master of Professional Science in 
Marine Environmental Science and is located on a 10-
acre campus near Port Everglades, FL.  The property 
also has three other buildings and modular space for 
labs, classrooms, and offices, as well as a marina.  The 
campus’ proximity to the oceans is ideal for launching

Environmental Studies Research Gala 
 
This year’s capstone gala was an amazing 
example of the different ways in which 
information is communicated. Grayson 
Jeffords, Nicholas Jacobs, and Emma 
Sutton did an amazing job presenting their 
results by thoroughly explaining each 
element of their data to the attendees. 
Heyward McPhail played his documentary 
on a TV, explaining his project as viewers 
enjoyed the show. Kas Burnet and Wilson 
Grayson each created their own podcast for 
the capstone, but they came together for the 
gala and did a collaborative podcast-styled 
panel. Thomas Rowland wrote songs for his 
capstone, so he performed one of his songs 
after briefly talking the attendees through 
his project. Overall, the senior 
Environmental Studies majors put on a 
spectacular event, showcasing their unique 
projects, while communicating their results 
in ways that those outside of the major 
could easily understand and enjoy. 
Congratulations to all the presenters and 
thank you to everyone who came out! 
Additionally, thank you to the seniors who 
are minoring in Environmental Studies, as 
they were integral in the planning and 
success of the capstone gala.  
 
Last month, the senior Environmental 
Studies majors presented the results of their 
capstone projects. Those who attended the 
capstone gala gained valuable insight from 
the seniors, who presented their projects in 
many ways including posters, 
presentations, a documentary showing, a Q 
& A panel, and a musical performance.  
This wide range of presentation methods 
speaks volumes on the different avenues 
that each senior took with their projects. 
The Environmental Studies department 
prides itself on the “three-legged stool” of 
environmental studies: social sciences, 
natural sciences, and humanities. The 
seniors did a phenomenal job in exploring 
all three legs of the stool, creating a medley 
of data driven and creative projects. 
Understanding our environment, much like 
understanding many other areas of our 
lives, requires a multi-faceted approach, 
such as the three-legged stool. 
Furthermore, the way by which we 
communicate problems, results, and 
information in general must be 
multifaceted as well, to reach more people 
and for those people to gain some sort of 
understanding on what it is we are trying to 
communicate.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
University of Georgia – College of Environment and Design  
The University of Georgia’s College of Environment 
and Design (CED) is one of the many areas of study 
that the school offers to graduate students who are 
interested in sustainability and the environment.  There 
are three master’s degrees in Landscape Architecture 
(MLA), Urban Planning & Design (MUPD), and 
Historic Preservation (MHP).  
CED programs are constantly ranked in the top 10 in 
the nation and their landscape architecture is one of the 
oldest graduate programs in the country. The highly 
regarded historic preservation program is one of only 
two programs in the US to offer a joint Juris 
Doctorate. 
CED has added a professional degree enhancement 
to its curriculum for the Leadership in Energy and 
Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation, which 
is a highly regarded credential for graduates looking 
to be hired. There are also a number of certificate 
programs that can help students enhance and 
specialize their primary degree.

iCAN Spartanburg
Kleo Young ’25, a double major in biology and chemistry from Anderson, South Carolina, led high school
students in a chemistry-based lab on the second day of an iCAN Spartanburg camp hosted by Wofford
College.

There is a lot more to the college application process than filling out an application. Wofford
College faculty and a student spent time guiding high school students from around
Spartanburg through the finer details of attending college by hosting an iCAN Spartanburg
camp.
iCAN Spartanburg is a near peer mentoring program that partners with the Citizens Scholars
Institute, a nonprofit in downtown Spartanburg, says Dr. James Stukes, Wofford’s assistant
dean of student success and college access. Stukes also is involved with Wofford’s Gateway
Scholars, acts as the head of iCAN Spartanburg and serves as the co-chair of the Citizens
Scholars executive board.
The program assists high school students in the college application process and with finding
suitable scholarships to apply for.
“Students learned about the common application, talked about financial aid options and about
when to start applying to colleges,” Stukes says.

Alumni and students in the Washington, D.C., area and Wofford staff recently gathered during the first stop
of the Summer City Tour hosted in partnership with the college’s Office of Philanthropy + Engagement and
the Career Center in the Mungo Exchange.  
Wofford alumni are partnering with the college’s alumni association and the Career Center in
the Mungo Exchange to host a 2023 Summer City Tour. The next stop is Bowen’s Island
Restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina, on July 30 from 3-8 p.m. The events provide
opportunities to network and socialize with alumni, Wofford staff and current students. Click

‘The joy for making things’
Michael Webster, assistant professor of studio art at Wofford, works on installing a sculpture that he’s titled
“Signal.” He’s one of nine artists from across the South selected for a South Arts fellowship.
Michael Webster built and installed subflooring and a slat of hardwood flooring that was six
feet wide along a Chicago, Illinois, street while he was a graduate student.
The city removed a portion of sidewalk and was slow to fill the hole during the Chicago winter.
People were stepping off the sidewalk and walking in traffic. Webster saw an opportunity to
help pedestrians through an art project that resembled a small portion of a basketball court
sandwiched between concrete squares.
“I’m definitely a maker,” Webster says. “I come into art with the joy for making things and
getting my hands messy.”
Webster, assistant professor of studio art at Wofford College, is one of nine artists selected
as a 2023 State Fellow for Visual Arts through South Arts. Artists received $5,000 grants and
are competing for $25,000 and $10,000 in additional prizes. He will have three pieces in a
four-city traveling exhibit that opens in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Aug. 17.

“Caught in the Tangle”
Annie Heisel ’24, Tianna Kidd ’25, Lucy Derrick ’24, Zari Mackey ’25 and Kelley Overlees ’24 are
participating in “Caught in the Tangle: An Interconnected Experience” to offer insight into the mental health
challenges that people experience.
“Caught in the Tangle: An Interconnected Experience” will take place at 4 and 8 p.m. on July
22 and 2 p.m. on July 23 in the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts. It will be
an interactive hour of theatre, dance and art that will guide the audience through multiple
spaces inspired by true stories from people who have experienced mental health challenges.
A $5 donation is suggested when attending the event to support mental health resources in
Spartanburg. The performance is sponsored by Wofford College’s Summer Faculty-Student
Collaborative Research.
Rob Galloway ’15 at Wimbledon
Rob Galloway ’15 has played in all four tennis Grand Slam events.
Rob Galloway '15 reached the third round of the gentleman's doubles draw at Wimbledon this
year. Galloway was a three-time All-Southern Conference selection at Wofford. He and his
partner, Lloyd Harris, are ranked #77 in the world. He has played in all four Grand Slam
events, reaching the second round at the French Open and the U.S. Open. This was the first
time he has advanced to the third round.
