Studying the stars
Emily Schwendemann ’25 looks at a star through a Celestron telescope in front of Old Main.
The early nights during Interim made for the perfect environment for Emily Schwendemann
’25 to do something that hasn’t been done at Wofford in decades.
Schwendemann spent their Interim looking toward the stars as part of an independent study
in the field of astrophysics. Schwendemann, a math, physics and computer science triple
major from Fountain Inn, S.C., brought together all their interests to dive into the chemical
composition of celestial bodies.

Benjamin Wofford’s desk, which is housed in the College Archives, and the first page of Wofford’s will.
“For the purpose of establishing and endowing a college for literary, classical, and scientific
education, to be located in my native district Spartanburg, and to be under the control and
management of the Methodist Episcopal Church of my native state, South Carolina, I order
$100,000 to be delivered to trustees…”
So began item 26 of the will of the Rev. Benjamin Wofford, which he signed on Feb. 1, 1850,
175 years ago this winter.

Goldmund Quartet visits Wofford
A visit by the Goldmund Quartet is among the featured events at Wofford during February
and March. The string quartet will perform in Main Building’s Leonard Auditorium on
Thursday, Feb. 27. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Goldmund Quartet is known to feature “exquisite playing” and “multi-layered
homogeneity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) in its interpretations of the great classical and modern
works of the quartet literature.
The quartet’s concert is the latest installment in the Dunlap Chamber Music Series, which
was founded in 2005 to bring international guest artists to Wofford’s campus.
