Immersive Summer Research in the Brazilian Pantanal

Brazilian sunset 
where it feels like you are completely 
secluded and away from human 
influence, but nothing compares to 
actually being in an area that is 
almost completely untouched. Being 
able to look in a tree and see a pair of 
hyacinth macaws or a toucan or just 
casually walk by several capybaras is 
surreal. I think the most incredible 
part was the sky at night. It was so 
clear you could practically see the 
curvature of the horizon and it 
almost made me dizzy. Being able to 
be a part of such an incredible team 
and see and experience so many new 
things was truly a once in a lifetime 
opportunity and I wouldn’t trade it 
for the world. 
 
 
 
 
This summer I had the privilege to 
assist Dr. Bradham with her 
research in the Brazilian Pantanal 
alongside Sophia Bernstein ’25. The 
research was examining the top-
down effects of large mammals in 
tropical forests. It was the first year 
of a multi-year study and we spent 
most of our time tagging and 
measuring seedlings to gather a 
measure of plant density and species 
richness that will act as a foundation 
for the feature of the project.  
It was my first time ever on a plane 
and my first time leaving the 
country. Three flights plus the seven 
hour “drive” through flooded fields 
made it feel like I had gone halfway 
across the planet, but I don’t think I 
will ever do anything to top this 
experience. I’ve been so many places 
Katie, Sophia, and Dr. Bradham 
took several flights and a 7-hour 
drive through flooded fields to get 
to their research site.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Colorado State University – Master of Conservation Leadership  
The Warner College of Natural Resources at 
Colorado State University offers a Conservation 
Leadership program that prepares students to 
address complex conservation issues and make a 
difference in the ecosystems of our plant.  
This is an 18-month graduate program that 
incorporates two semesters of coursework and a 
capstone project. The coursework gives students an 
opportunity to learn about the conservation field 
and the capstone project gives them the opportunity 
to apply those skills to real conservation issues. 
The program includes opportunities for 
experiential learning with field trips, workshops, 
and case studies; inter-disciplinary perspectives 
with coursework rooted in the social sciences; 
cohort-based learning where students take all their 
courses together; immersion weeks when regular 
classes are canceled, and students are immersed 
into a conservation topic; connections with real 
world conservation practitioners; and cross-
cultural experiences as most capstone projects are 
completed abroad.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Middlebury Institute of International Studies – MA in International Environmental Policy  
Middlebury Institute of International Studies, 
located in Monterey, California, is affiliated with the 
Graduate School of Middlebury College.  It offers a 
Master of Arts in International Environmental 
Policy (IEP), which focuses on an international 
scope instead of just on U.S. policy issues.  Three 
specialized tracks are offered in Natural Resource 
Policy & Management, Ocean & Coastal Resource 
Management, and Sustainability Management. 
Along with the core course and elective 
specialization course work, there is also a language 
of study and/or intercultural course work 
requirement.  
This area of California is home to marine and 
ocean conservation and policy as well as the 
“greentech” revolution and other environmental 
groups and there are many opportunities to 
collaborate with these environmental institutions.   
Thanks to generous alumni and donors, 
scholarships from $5000-$10,000 are available to 
IEP students who request that consideration in 
their application.

Ongoing Opportunities   The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a large number of research opportunities 
for undergraduate (REU) students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site 
consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of 
the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where 
he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted 
stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. These are paid 
summer research positions, and they look AMAZING on your resume! Search REU

Gardening in the Chandler Courtyard 
 
this Spring! Mae is planting kale, 
cucumbers, hot peppers, and a 
variety of herbs and wildflowers. 
She says, “I have thoroughly 
enjoyed being outside tending to 
my garden each day. I find that 
being in the garden helps calm me 
down and is a great way to spend 
time in nature. I am beyond 
excited to see how my plot does 
this Spring!” Tyler is planting 
sunchokes, onions, and lettuce. 
He says, “It's very rewarding 
getting to hold the product of your 
hard work at the end of the 
growing season.”  
There are still several plots left in 
the garden that need to be tended 
to. If you or anyone you know is 
interested in maintaining a plot, 
contact Dr. Amy Telligman, 
telligmanal@wofford.edu. 
 
 
Last semester, students in Dr. 
Telligman’s Agroecology class 
were given the opportunity to 
each have a garden plot in the 
Chandler courtyard as part of a 
semester-long project. They were 
assigned to a garden plot and had 
to take care of the plot for the 
entire semester. They were given 
the task to maintain the plots in 
such a way that they were 
aesthetically pleasing, and 
ecologically diverse as well as 
plant things that were both 
nutritious and delicious for the 
harvest meal at the end of the 
semester.

so much that they decided to 
continue their gardening journey

Upcoming Events and Opportunities 
PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Texas Christian University – College of Science and Engineering  
Texas Christian University offers a MS in Geology, a MA 
or MS in Environmental Science, and a MEM in 
Environmental Management through its College of 
Science and Engineering.  
In Geology students can focus on structural geology and 
tectonics, sedimentary or petroleum geology, igneous and 
metamorphic petrology, geomorphology, meteoritics and 
planetary geology, paleontology, and GIS. Most student 
projects are completed locally or regionally, while some 
are completed internationally.  
In Environmental Science, specific fields of study include 
environmental compliance and law, aquatic and terrestrial 
ecosystems, conservation biology, and habitat and 
wildlife management. All include coursework, research, 
and fieldwork. Environmental Management is offered in 
conjunction with the MJ Neeley School of Business and 
gives students skills in science, business, NGOs, and 
government. 
These programs are part of TCU’s larger Institute for 
Environmental Studies, which is a collaboration between 
departments, institutions, government, and private 
businesses to create solutions to environmental issues.

OCTOBER 5, 1.997

The Administrative Council of the Aynor United Methodist 
Church met on October 5, 1997 at 5:30 p.m. in the 
Fellowship Hall. David Parker presided. 
The meeting was called to order at 5:30. David 
opened with prayer. The 1998 Goals were accepted as 
minutes from the last meeting. Corrections to Childrens 
Ministry, Family Ministry, and United Methodist Women were 
noted. 
Committee Reports were given as follows: 
Childrens Ministries: Rachel Dawsey reported. 
a. Sunshine Club meeting will be 10-22. 
b. Childrens Choir practice will be 11-5 & 11-19. 
c. No sunshine Club in November. 
d. Santa's Workshop will be 12-6. 
e. Christmas Pageant will be 12-14. 
f. No Sunshine Club in December.

CHARGE CONFERENCE 
OCTOBER 16, 1997 
The annual Charge Conference was held on October 16, 1997 
at 7:00 ~.m. in the fellowship hall. Rev. Knight opened 
the meeting by welcoming everyone, devotion, and prayer. 
Rev. Knight lead the meeting and prepared reports were 
presented and reviewed as follows: 
Pastors Report, Annual Report of Trustees, Report of 
Committee on Nominations, United Methodist Women Report, 
United Methodist Men Report, Youth Report, Parsonage 
Report, Pastors Compensation. 
Charles Dawsey and Lee Ann Altman were elected to serve 
as Class of 2000 members of the Committee on Nominations 
and Personnel. 
David Best was recommended for continuation as candidate 
for ordained ministry. 
The following were recommended to become Lay Speakers: 
Mark Mullins, Allen Vaught, Tammy Vaught, Clifton Roberts. 
John Boyd and Charles Fernald were recommended to be 
recertified as Lay speakers. 
The following were recommended as additions to precious or 
planned cross racial experiences: Thursday morning prayer 
breakfast and community wide services such as crusade and 
Thanksgiving Services. 
Motion was made and approved that the 1997 Charge 
Conference minutes be accepted as presented.

Church met on August 10, 1997 at 12:00 noon in the 
Sanctuary. David Parker called the meeting to order. 
The construction of the picnic shelter was the order of 
business. After discussion, a motion was made to go ahead 
with the construction of the shelter and this motion was 
approved. Meeting adjourned.

Church met on January 12, 1997 at 5:00 p.m. in the 
Fellowship Hall. David Parker presided. 
The meeting was called to order at 5:00. David 
opened with prayer and read scripture. 
Minutes from the last meeting were approved as presented. 
The first order of business was to elect Vice-Chairperson 
and Secretary. Don Hopson was nominated and elected 
vice-Chairman and Vicky Hucks was nominated and elected 
Secretary.

Childrens Ministries: Rachel Dawsey reported. 
a. Sunshine Club being held each month. 
b. Sunday School Program to be held 3-23-97
