A Newsletter of the Wofford College Environmental Studies Program 
Volume 14, Issue 4 
Earth Systems and the Science Center  
 
outside of the classroom to engage in 
scientific inquiry. To this end, 
students went to the Roper Mountain 
Science Center in Greenville where 
they were given a tour of the facilities 
and a detailed understanding of how 
and why the center is so effective. To 
say this was a great trip is an 
understatement. Through firsthand 
experiences, the students realized 
that the power of a science center lies 
with bringing together families and 
making science accessible for all 
people. From holding pythons (or 
running away to the back of the 
room when the snake came out!) to 
using play sand, to exploring 
watersheds, the students are excited 
about their future designs and eager 
to see them deployed at the Science 
Center! 
 
 
 
 
 
This semester Dr. Bradham’s ENVS 
150 Earth Systems class is 
partnering with the Spartanburg 
Science Center to create new 
exhibits that support students and 
teachers in advancing their 
understanding of the earth sciences. 
This collaboration is extra special as 
Mae Webster ’23 graduated last year 
with a BS in Environmental Studies 
and is now the Education Director 
at the Spartanburg Science Center. 
She is collaborating with students 
throughout the process to design, 
create, and deploy interactive 
student exhibit ideas. The first part 
of the project included an 
exploration into the role of a science 
center in a community, what makes 
an exhibit effective, and the 
importance of having opportunities 
ENVS 150 students visited the Roper 
Mountain Science Center in 
Greenville and the Spartanburg 
Science Center.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Rhode Island School of Design – MA in Nature-Culture-Sustainability Studies  
One of the newest graduate programs at Rhode 
Island School of Design (RISD) is their MA in 
Nature-Culture-Sustainability Studies (NCSS), 
which engages socioecological issues within the 
humanities, social sciences, and art and design. 
Students work with faculty in environmental 
humanities and social sciences to create self-directed 
pathways of research in areas such as Anthropocene 
studies, climate change cultures, green urbanisms, 
and sustainable design. These students go on to 
work in areas such as environmental advocacy, 
public policy, urban planning, and more. 
NCSS is a year and a half long program with 15-
hours of core courses in interdisciplinary 
environmental humanities and social sciences, 12-
hours of NCSS electives including one taken 
during RISD’s 5-week winter session in 
January/February, and 12-hours of thesis work. 
Students also benefit from small class sizes and the 
highly collaborative nature among the other 16 art 
and design-based master’s programs.

Celebrating Halloween by Dr. Peter Brewitt  
 
that people often ignore, or even actively 
fear. But in October, we embrace them. 
Halloween also embraces seasonality – 
consider bobbing for apples, or the 
pumpkin spice everything, from tea to 
pasta. Of course it’s no secret that 
Halloween is very globalized and 
commercialized, but that globalization 
adds – while Halloween seems to have 
originated in the deep past with western 
European Celts, corn and pumpkins are, of 
course, New World crops. 
Environmental Studies has its own 
Halloween celebration this weekend. If 
you come to Glendale between 3 and 5pm 
on Sunday, October 29, the Goodall 
Center will have an array of spooky fun, 
from the traditional crafts and animals that 
you might remember from years past to a 
haunted walk that I hope I am brave 
enough to attempt. My family and I will 
be there – join us! 
 
 
 
It’s Halloween, it’s Halloween! 
The moon is full and bright; 
And we shall see what can’t be seen; 
On any other night! 
 
I love Halloween, and I hope you do too. 
It’s a holiday that lets you be yourself by 
pretending to be something else, it 
encourages creativity AND tradition, and 
it is probably the one day of the year that 
lets you connect with more of your 
neighbors than you would on any other 
occasion. It has something for everyone 
from little kids (in my house we have 
been reading the above poem, by Jack 
Prelutsky, all month long). And, more 
than Thanksgiving or Christmas, it’s a 
holiday about nature. The action, from 
yard displays to trick or treating, takes 
place outdoors. The iconography – 
pumpkins, bats, spiders, black cats – are 
natural species. Indeed, they are species

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Appalachian State University – MBA in Sustainable Business  
The Walker College of Business at Appalachian 
State University has an enrollment of 100 graduate 
students and is consistently included in the US New 
and World Report’s and Princeton Review’s Best Business 
Schools.   
An MBA, with a concentration in Sustainable 
Business, is offered in a compressed time frame 
allowing the student to complete the program in one 
year from their start date by going full time year-
round and taking summer classes and/or 
participating in an internship.  A rolling admissions 
plan is also offered so students can start the program 
in the fall, spring, or summer.  Off-Campus 
students go halftime year-round with classes two 
nights a week and generally finish in two years. 
One of the factors that differentiates the Walker 
College MBA Program from programs at many 
other universities is the small class size. With a 
target class size of 20-25, students receive more 
individual attention in class and individual 
assistance with career related issues than are 
available with larger classes. Quality is more 
important than quantity.

Goodall Visiting Fellow Artist Talk

The closest to the calm spirit and 
gentle stories the artist shares. “The 
gallery did not like the mold, so I had 
to seal them.” It’s true, though dead, 
they are also no longer fecund. Slabs 
of fruit, one each on the square face of 
a concrete block. Small, 
complementing the furniture. The 
slides are much like Picasso’s famous 
painting, showing how a bull is 
transformed into abstract lines, each 
panel of a progression. But here the 
abstract is her early work. And we see 
in detail the new life coming first as 
figures then as buildings are abstracted 
and then left behind. What remains 
are memories of food, nature and very 
flavorful semiotics of love. Mirra 
Goldfrad leaves behind a four-foot by 
four-foot house with a clear tin roof, 
walls lush with trees and signage. 
When you see it in the Richardson Art 
Center, put your head inside? You will 
hear the stream flow by. These objects. 
So precious! 
It is Thursday night and I am dead 
tired. But happy. The orange and 
yellow Chihuli glass catches my eye 
as I hold the door for two dear 
students. We are here to see our own 
artist-in-residence Mirra Goldfrad. 
She is a Visiting Fellow at the 
Goodall Environmental Studies 
Center. Among the six steaming pizza 
pies and the well wishes, I count 
myself lucky. How have I landed 
here? 
Among tales and longing to recreate 
the joyful meals of the rooms, 
kitchens, this-will-do housing in 
suburbia with its doors to the soul 
held open for food and scent and 
subtle textures of sound, Mirra 
Goldfrad’s lecture and visuals have 
me on the edge of my seat. I’m in 
front. Way up in front. There are a 
hundred students here. I wave in the 
last few in the way of pointing out a 
few seats up here. These are the best. 
“when observing the observer” is 
now on display in the Richardson 
Family Art Café Gallery until

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Vanderbilt University – Center for Environmental Management  
Vanderbilt Center for Environmental Management 
(VCEMS) was established “to study the 
coordination and sharing of environmental 
responsibilities that is required among a variety of 
stakeholders representing business, government, and 
community interests.”  VCEMS is a joint initiative 
between the School of Engineering, the Owens 
School of Management, and the Law School.  A 
wide range of options for study focus is available 
through the three schools. 
VCEMS fosters the next generation of leaders in 
searching for solutions to environmental issues 
through management and policy that will impact 
communities well into the next century. 
VCEMS offers a customized interdisciplinary 
master’s degree and Ph.D. degree in 
environmental management by applying to 
Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering.
