   BEYOND JUBILEE 
 
 FOR SIXTY YEARS BETHEL HAS SERVED

  BETHEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 
        TEN MORE YEARS OF SERVICE 
 
 On February 24, 2002, Bethel United Methodist Church in Jackson, 
South Carolina, celebrated its “Jubilee” year. The theme of the celebration 
was “Victory in Jesus, Fifty Years of Service to God and Community“ 
 
 Rev. Jerry Davis was the Pastor, having served since 2001.  He 
remained at Bethel until 2008. 
 
 Among his many talents were those of playing the guitar and singing. 
Many Sunday evenings and other special occasions, we enjoyed a time of 
special music by the Pastor and his “thrown-together” band which included 
one of his friends from a former pastorate, Hyman Creamer, Jim Berry and 
sometimes James Goodman on his harmonica. 
 
 During his tenure, his wife Pat lost her battle with leukemia and 
passed away leaving a huge void in the church community and in the  
parsonage family.  It was during this time the church became the minister to 
its pastor and fully supported him in his suffering with the medical problems 
and the loss of his wife. 
 
 During the months of absence by the pastor, Rev. Bob Clyburn 
graciously filled in for him and served exceptionally well as the interim 
pastor.  He is a retired minister who is a member of St. Johns United 
Methodist Church in Aiken, South Carolina. He and his lovely wife Mary 
Ann were adored by the grateful congregation. 
 
 To help pay medical bills, the  church family participated in fund 
raising events for Pat Davis and Emily Zimmerman at Hall’s auction barn in 
Beech Island, as well as another event at the Hippodrome in North Augusta. 
Emily Zimmerman is the daughter of Rev. Zimmerman. She had a brain 
tumor which left her blind.  She is still living today and has maintained a 
wonderful Christian attitude and demeanor. 
 
 In 2008 Jerry Davis retired at Annual Conference.

 In 2008 Rev. William F. (Bill) Farley was sent to Bethel as the new 
Pastor.  He also retired after serving Bethel until 2010. 
 He had served in the United States Air Force, and while our pastor, 
piloted his own airplane. 
 
 When he arrived in Jackson he graciously lived in a rented house for 
several months while the parsonage was being renovated. 
 
 He was a beekeeper, having bee hives at his mountain home. He 
donated jars of honey to the UMW and the UMM for their booth at the Hook 
and Cook Festival. 
 
 It was during his tenure that children returned to Bethel and a new 
Sunday school class was formed for small children by Robin Dennis. 
 
 In meetings with the District Superintendent, the Pastor-Parish 
Relations Committee indicated that the church would like to have a young 
minister, since it had had so many elderly retirement aged ministers. The 
youth of the church seemed to be dwindling down because of leaving for 
other larger churches who had more vibrant youth groups. The 
superintendent understood the wishes and promised to send a young man in 
whom he had great confidence. 
 
 In 2010 the new Pastor was Rev. Gene Aiken who is the current 
Pastor as we celebrate the 60th year as a United Methodist Church.  Although 
he is attending the Seminary, he still finds time to be a caring pastor to an 
aging and needy congregation.  He also works toward restoring a growth 
pattern in membership and participation by all age groups. 
 
 On the day his family was supposed to move into the parsonage, his 
wife entered the hospital and delivered their first child. She was a beautiful 
little girl whom they named Ann Michelle. She is now walking, running, and 
has become the heart of many of the church members. 
 
 One of the highlights of our church family life was the Christening of  
Ann Michelle. The District Superintendent, Rev. John Hipp, Rev. Ken 
Nelson, the  grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Terry Fleming, Mr. and Mrs.

William M. Aiken, and Will Aiken, (brother to Rev. Gene)  were all present 
on that Sunday morning for the special occasion. 
 
 Rev. Aiken has brought back life to a UMYF and the tradition of a 
Christmas drop-in at the parsonage. Neither had been alive for many years. 
 
   OUTREACH PROGRAMS 
 
 The congregation has continued its outreach programs in the 
community. The members bring a different can, box, or bag of food each 
month for the Jackson Food Program. 
 
 Coats and sweaters are collected annually for ACTS so that they may 
be distributed to needy persons. 
 
  Funds are  collected throughout the year from donations, other 
fundraisers such as the Easter Lilly dedications, and the Christmas 
Poinsettias dedications, while pennies are saved and turned in to the Family 
Ministries Committee all for the purpose of purchasing Christmas toys and 
gifts for needy children in the Jackson school system. 
 
 The Church also has a drive each year before the beginning of the 
school year, to collect school supplies for the children at Redcliffe 
Elementary and the Jackson Middle School. 
 
 One of the favorite things the Family Ministries provides is the ice 
cream socials. They appear to be the favorite kind of Sunday evening family 
dinner. Other dinners, such as the lasagna and pizza dinners, were held as 
fundraisers for the children’s Christmas fund. 
 
 Funds were donated by the members on “Souper Bowl” Sunday for 
the Golden Harvest Food Bank. 
 
 The United Methodist Men have contributed to the community by 
sponsoring the community breakfast in cooperation with First Baptist 
Church, Matlock Baptist Church, and  First Christian Church.

   The men have built several ramps for handicapped or disabled 
persons. They also put on a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday each year. 
During the past year they donated a dishwasher for the “Habitat for 
Humanity” house in Jackson. The UMW provided meals for the workers. 
 
 They have a spring and fall Ladies Night each year. Entertainment is 
always included at the fall event which is held at Wesley Chapel.  A steak 
supper is presented at these meetings. The spring program is held at Bethel. 
 
 The church still participates with First Baptist Church and First 
Christian Church, in the 5th Sunday Night Song Service.  The proceeds from 
the freewill offering goes to the Helping Hands organization for aid to the 
needy in the Jackson area. 
 
 The Sunday school has a joint breakfast  each quarter, with each class 
taking turns providing the food and drink.   
 
 During Lent the Sunday school hour was used for a special study 
based on the book, “24 Hours that Changed the World” by Adam Hamilton. 
Every Sunday night during Lent the Pastor led a Bible study for all ages. 
 
 The UMW has sponsored two yard sales which were very successful. 
The proceeds were used for missions.  It’s second cookbook was published 
with over 500 recipes by church members. 
 
 The “Merry Christmas Dinner” for the widows of the town continues 
to be successful as a special project of the UMW. 
 
 Bethel UMW continues to be a “Five-Star Unit”.  In 2011 a very 
successful State UMW meeting was held at St. John United Methodist 
Church in Aiken, South Carolina.  Approximately 500 ladies attended. 
Bethel UMW contributed to the success of this meeting. 
 
 The church family is committed to keeping adequate finances. It has 
always met its budget without any special fund raising campaign. It takes 
pride also in paying 100% of the Conference apportionments as well as 
funding its $100,000.00 budget.

 The Trustees have been busy fulfilling their duties.  They put a new 
heating and cooling system in the fellowship hall, replaced the shrubbery at 
the parsonage, and have placed a handicap ramp at the fellowship hall. 
 
 The Worship Committee makes provisions for the monthly 
communion service which takes place on the first Sunday of each month. 
 
  MEMBERS OF OTHER OUTREACH PROGRAMS 
 
 Phyllis Boyd is an officer of the Orangeburg District United 
Methodist Women. 
 
 Terri Goodman is a member and secretary of the Board of Directors of 
the Emmaus of the Midlands. “Walk to Emmaus” is a United Methodist 
Church program for spiritual renewal and growth. 
 
 James H. Goodman is a Certified Lay Speaker.  He is a member and 
an instructor for the Orangeburg District Lay Speaking Committee. 
 
    
 Over the past ten years we have gained 27 new members and lost at 
least 25 by death.  At the present time Bethel has approximately one hundred 
sixty-five members, with an average  attendance each Sunday of about fifty-
five.

 The primary goal of Bethel United Methodist Church for the 
coming years is to be a vibrant living church, presenting the 
unblemished truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. With special 
emphasis on: 
 
  1. Jesus saves 
  2. All are welcome to become a part of this 
       church family 
  3. Setting an example of Christian living that 
      shows a transformed life 
  4. Continuing to reach out to the community 
      with encouragement and inspiration 
  5. Continuing to meet physical as well as

        the United Methodist Church. 
  7. Becoming more committed to teaching our children

        understanding and appreciating the universal

2015 
 
Long time Bethel member, James H. Goodman, Sr. passed away 
on February 14, 2015. 
 
Bethel received its first female pastor in June of 2015.  Rev. Hope 
Avins and her husband, Tim Morris and their son Michael moved 
into the parsonage in late June.  Hope and her family were 
welcomed into the Bethel church family.  Our previous pastor, 
Rev. Gene Aiken, was moved to Central, SC. 
 
Began Forward Focus process of analyzing the various aspects of 
the church including financial status, demographics, etc. in order to 
help the church to grow. 
 
 
2016 
 
A celebration of the 100th birthday of Mrs. Elma Steed took place 
on Saturday, April 30, 2016 in the church fellowship hall.  Many 
family and friends attended.  There were five generations present 
including the newest edition, Eli Caldwell, who is nine weeks old.  
Eli is the son of Eric Caldwell who is the son of Karen Polson 
Bunch.  Karen is the daughter of Priscilla Steed Polson and Elma 
Steed is her mother.  Several items of memorabilia depicting the 
life of Mrs. Elma were on display including some current items 
such as congratulatory letters from the Governor of South 
Carolina, Mrs. Nikki Haley, a card from the White House signed 
by President Barack Obama and the First Lady, Michelle, and a 
letter from the town of Jackson.  A photographer from the Aiken 
Standard newspaper was present and an article was published in 
the paper the next day.

2018 
New organ was delivered in May.  The church’s organ fund was a 
few thousand dollars short of having enough to purchase a new 
organ but the church decided to go ahead and purchase a new 
organ.  Shortly after it was installed some sizeable contributions 
were made to the organ fund and with about $400 left to go the 
idea to make some custom ink pens from the maple foot pedals of 
the old organ was pursued.  The shortfall in the organ fund was 
quickly eliminated and an over $300 surplus was obtained.

INFORMATION 
Except as provided in this paragraph, the term “value” means “the consideration paid or to be paid in money or money’s worth for the realty.’ 
Consideration paid or to be paid in money’s worth includes, but is not limited to, other realty, personal property, stocks, bonds, partnership 
interest and other intangible property, the forgiveness or cancellation of a debt, the assumption of a debt, and the surrendering of any right. The 
fair market value of the consideration must be used in calculating the consideration paid in money’s worth. Taxpayers may elect to use the fair 
market value of the realty being transferred in determining fair market value of the consideration. In the case of realty transferred between a 
corporation, a partnership, or other entity and a stockholder, partner, or owner of the entity, and in the case of realty transferred to a trust or as a 
distribution to a trust beneficiary, “value” means the realty’s fair market value. A deduction from value is allowed for the amount of any lien or 
encumbrance existing on the land, tenement, or realty before the transfer and remaining on the land, tenement, or realty after the transfer. 
Taxpayers may elect to use the fair market value for property tax purposes in determining fair market value under the provisions of the law. 
 
Exempted from the fee are deeds: 
(1) transferring realty in which the value of the realty, as defined in Code Section 12-24-30, is equal to or less than one hundred dollars: 
(2) transferring realty to the federal government or to a state, its agencies and departments, and its political subdivisions, including school 
districts; 
(3) that are otherwise exempted under the laws and Constitution of this State or of the United States; 
(4) transferring realty in which no gain or loss is recognized by reason of Section 1041 of the Internal Revenue Code as defined in Section 12-6-

(5) transferring realty in order to partition realty as long as no consideration is paid for the transfer other than the interests in the realty that are 
being exchanged in order to partition the realty; 
(6) transferring an individual grave space at a cemetery owned by a cemetery company licensed under Chapter 55 of Title 39; 
(7) that constitute a contract for the sale of timber to be cut; 
(8) transferring realty to a corporation, a partnership, or a trust in order to become, or as, a stockholder, partner, or trust beneficiary of the entity 
provided no consideration is paid for the transfer other than stock in the corporation, interest in the partnership, beneficiary interest in the trust, or 
the increase in value in such stock or interest held by the grantor. However, the transfer of realty from a corporation, a partnership, or a trust to a 
stockholder, partner, or trust beneficiary of the entity is subject to the fee even if the realty is transferred to another corporation, a partnership, or 
trust; 
(9) transferring realty from a family partnership to a partner or from a family trust to a beneficiary, provided no consideration is paid for the 
transfer other than a reduction in the grantee’s interest in the partnership or trust. A “family partnership” is a partnership whose partners are all 
members of the same family. A “family trust” is a trust, in which the beneficiaries are all members of the same family. The beneficiaries of a 
family trust may also include charitable entities. “Family” means the grantor and the grantor’s spouse, parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, 
children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and the spouses and lineal descendants of any the above. A “charitable entity” means an entity which may 
receive deductible contributions under Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code as defined in Section 12-6-40(A); 
(10) transferring realty in a statutory merger or consolidation from a constituent corporation to the continuing or new corporation; 
(11) transferring realty in a merger or consolidation from a constituent partnership to the continuing or new partnership; and, 
(12) that constitute a Corrective deed or a quitclaim deed used to confirm title already vested in the grantee, provided that no consideration of any 
kind is paid or is to be paid under the corrective or quitclaim deed. 
(13) transferring realty subject to a mortgage to the mortgagee whether by a deed in lieu of foreclosure executed by the mortgagor or deed 
pursuant to foreclosure proceedings. 
(14) transferring realty from an agent to the agent’s principal in which the realty was purchased with funds of the principal, provided that a 
notarized document is also filed with the deed that establishes the fact that the agent and principal relationship existed at the time of the original 
purchase as well as for the purpose of purchasing the realty. 
(15) transferring title to facilities for transmitting electricity that is transferred, sold, or exchanged by electrical utilities, municipalities, electric 
cooperatives, or political subdivisions to a limited liability company which is subject to regulation under the Federal Power Act (16 U.S.C. Section 
791(a)) and which is formed to operate or to take functional control of electric transmission assets as defined in the Federal Power Act.

HISTORY OF DUNCAN CHAPEL UNITED METIIODIST CHURCH 
The people of this community saw the need for a local church in 1905 and decided on its 
construction. Thus, Duncan Chapel Methodist Church was built that year, 100 years 
ago. It was named in honor of Bishop Duncan who was one of the great bishops of the 
Methodist Church. The first pastor of the new church was Rev. W. S. Goodwin. 
Mrs. Martha Ann Weathers gave the land on which the church was built. She requested 
that no cemetery was to be put on the church grounds. Her wishes were granted and no 
cemetery was ever started on the grounds. However, a short distance away separated by 
a highway and wooded area lies Duncan Chapel Cemetery. It is bordered with a black 
wrought iron fence and attractive entrance gate. 
Money for the new church was raised by the ladies who gave suppers and bazaars. The 
men contributed by giving of their labor and materials. When the church was completed, 
including the benches and pulpit, it was dedicated by Reverend H. W. Bayes. The 
original benches and cane bottom chairs remained in use until 1966 when new benches 
and pulpit chairs were purchased. The original pulpit, altar, and altar table now stand 
refinished to blend with the newer furniture. Eleven years later, new carpet and co-
ordinated cushions and bench pads which greatly added to the beauty and comfort of the 
church were given in memory of Willie Thomas Patrick. 
Over the years, extreme light led to fading of the hymnals as well as the cushions. So in 
1991 new hymnals were purchased as well as cushions replaced. Church members knew 
that stained glass windows would help preserve the interior and add to the sacredness of 
the church by using Bible stories depicted in the windows. This would also compliment 
the circular window picturing "Jesus and the Children" that had been given in 1990 in 
memory of Hampton AJva Whetsel~ m. After many donations by fiiends, families, and 
members, the stained glass windows became a reality in 1995. Also new overhead 
lighting in the sanctuary with matching sconces completed this project. 
Church school rooms were added on the east side of the church in 194 7. Several of the 
walls of these rooms had removable petitions which made the area more versatile for 
church functions. Later in 1950 a choir loft was built behind the pulpit. However, today 
the choir is placed to the left front of the congregation near the organ. Another step of 
refurbishing was in 1966 when theater type choir seats were purchased. 
In the beginning, the church was lighted by kerosene lamps and heated by wood stoves. 
Electric lights were installed in 1941 and gas heaters replaced the wood heaters in the 
winter of 1950. Today the church and church school rooms are air-conditioned and 
centrally heated.

, In 1979 it was felt that a social hall complete with a kitchen was needed. This was built 
on the adjacent church grounds extending further east than the church school rooms-
unattached to the former building but easily accessible to it. The new hall was named in 
memory of Samuel Arthur Huff and is fondly known as the Huff Memorial Building. In 
addition to being air-conditioned and centrally heated, the building also has a built-in 
fireplace which today has been converted to gas logs. Located directly behind the 
building is a paved tennis court which also serves as a basketball or volley ball court. A 
tremendous contribution of labor was given by many people of the church in addition to 
numerous private donations for the work of the building and the court. 
Around the early part of 2000, members decided that a door be cut into an existing 
outside wall and a covered ramp connecting Huff Memorial Building be erected. This 
project was completed in addition to a ramp leading from the parking area to the building. 
It has been proven to be very useful and convenient for everyone.

Next an accessible or seniors' restroom was on the agenda. Today a spacious restroom 
lies at the top of the ramp.

Doors that separated the Sunday School Department from the church have now been 
removed and recycled. The first Sunday School room has become an addition to the 
sanctuary complete with new carpentry. window treatments, padded chairs, and new 
chandelier. 
In the past several years the church building and hall have experienced several face lifts 
such as new roofs, interior and some exterior painting , additional hand railings and other 
minor repairs. The Church to date has been richly blessed by withstanding two major 
hurricanes-Gracie and Hugo. For 100 years Duncan Chapel has proudly been referred 
to as the little country church or the church in the wildwood. Although members are not 
as many as they once were, those that remain strive to make the best even better. They 
work together believing and achieving that "all things are possible through God."
