Coleman, Nancy Griffith  
 
Cromley, Ira – was the Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years 
and kept meticulous records (including that day’s weather, 
attendance and the amount each added to offering). He may be 
buried in town – he lived in the house on corer near Minick’s old 
shop. 
 
Crawford, Herman – married to Zell Crawford. Zell’s mother was 
cousin Sybil). He was also the father of John Robert. 
 
Cromley, Bernard G  - Dory’s dad’s brother – lived in David’s house. 
Played piano and taught music. Sal Bouknight taught him to play the 
organ at church, and when he was first learning and playing keys 
only to find no music was coming out, Miss Sal called out “Pump, 
fool, pump!!” 
 
Cromley, Betty Styron – David’s first wife. She played the guitar and 
sang. She would accompany John Griffith to revivals and take a 
special starburst guitar. She once allowed Jerry and Rose to pose 
with her special guitar for a picture, but strictly forbad him to play it! 
 
Cromley, Edwin “Ed” – one twin brothers, siblings to Dory’s 
granddaddy Cromley 
 
Cromly, Manie “Matt” – one twin brothers, siblings to Dory’s 
granddaddy Cromley 
 
Cromley, Evin – Dory, Lalla, Rose & David’s dad 
 
Cromley, Helen – Dory, Lalla, Rose & David’s mom 
 
Cromley, Barry – infant son of David and Betty Cromley 
 
Cromley, Heber – married Ella, Heber was cousin Sybil’s brother, 
who lived in the house Keith Edwards now lives in. Ella loved 
flowers, and always brought camellias or any other flowers in bloom 
to church. Rebecca Griffith’s only memory of Ella was once when 
Rebecca was 8, and Ella said “you’re getting a little big aren’t you?” 
 
Cromley, Julian – married Ada. Julian was Evin’s oldest brother. Ada 
was Bryan Dorn’s aunt. They lived in front of Herman Crawford.  
 
Cromley, Andrew – married Lalla. Grandparents to Dory, Lalla, David 
and Rose. Grandmother Lalla had severe arthritis and died before 
the grandchildren were born.  
 
Ferguson, Whitfield & others 
 
Gardner, Celia – Charles’ wife (John’s mother). Was great friends 
with Valerie Rikard and they used to sing together a lot. 
 
Gardner, Jack – married Nell. Jack was a WWII vet. He had lots of 
common sense. He taught adult Sunday School, and like his son 
Charlie, prayed beautiful prayers. He also served as a steward when 
needed. (Stewards were men of the church who visited members 
around the community when the church was in need of funds).Nell 
was the church treasurer for many, many years. Lisa remembers 
that at one church function Jack and Nell made parched peanuts – it 
was the first time she had them and they were delicious! Dory 
remembers a time that Jack invited them over for a “possum 
supper”. Some of the men ate the possum, which was served up 
with sweet potatoes, but Ma Nell fixed fried chicken and many other 
delicious dishes for the main meal. 
 
Goodman, John H (1827 – 1888) – married to Amanda Griffith 
Goodman (children Matilda Goodman Padgett and Sophie 
Goodman Ramey). Inscription on tombstone: Co F 27 SC Infantry, 
CSA (Confederate States of  America) 
 
Goodman, Walter D. (1858-1899 aged 41) – married Mary B 
Goodman and had 2 children: daughter Marie and son Johnnie Otis 
Goodman. 
 
Goodman, Marie (1883 – 1900 aged 17) – daughter of Walter D. 
Goodman  
 
Goodman, Johnnie Otis (1893 – 1894 aged 6 months) Infant son of 
Walter and Marie Goodman 
 
Greene, Vernice F. Horne (1913 – 1945) – married Rupert R Greene. 
Inscription on the tombstone was “She was the sunshine of our 
home.” 
 
Griffith, Aileen Davis (1925 – 2009 aged 83) – married to PFC James 
Malcolm “Cotton” Griffith (these are the parents of Ronnie, Gary, 
Scottie and Rita) 
 
Griffith, Andrew B (1827 – 1885 aged 57) – Pvt Co G 7 SC Inf Vols 
Confederate States Army. Married to Frances P “Fannie” Neal 
Griffith Brooks. Children were John Edgar Griffith, Andrew Hugh 
Griffith, Annie B Griffith Bauknight, Amanda Griffith Polley, William B 
Griffith. 
 
Giffith, Arno (1907 – 1910 aged 2) son of William Lowery Griffith and 
Sarah Elsie Griffith.2wqs 
 
Griffith, PFC James Malcolm “Cotton” Griffith (1915 – 1986 aged 70) 
– inscription on tombstone PFC (Private First Class) US Army, World 
War II) James Malcolm “Cotton” Griffith was the son of William 
Lowery Griffith and Sarah “Sallie” Elsie Duffie and was born in 
Saluda County. He enlisted in the US Army on Jan 22, 1941 and was 
discharged on June 22, 1945. 
 
Griffith, John Abney Sr  (1822 - ?) – (not sure of wife’s name) 
Children: J. Abney Griffith, William Griffith, Thomas Gordon Griffith, 
and Amanda Griffith Crouch. Served in the Confederate States of 
America Co. B, 2nd SC State Troops. 
 
Griffith, John Franklin (1870 – 1954 aged 83) – married to Lizzie 
Sheppard Griffith 
 
Griffith, Lizzie Sheppard (1873 – 1948) – Lizzie’s parents were 
Wellington and Mica Elliot “Ella” Sheppard, who are buried at Pine 
Pleasant. 
 
Griffith, Mary “Polly” Abney (1805 – 1855 aged 50) – Polly’s parents 
were Johnathan Bay “John” Abney and Martha Willis Abney (buried at 
Zoar). Children are: Martha Griffith Yarborough, John Abney Griffith 
Sr, Henry W Griffith, Andrew B Griffith, Anna Griffith Abney, Amanda 
Griffith Goodman, Sophia Isabella Griffith Sheppard, and Matthew 
Abney Willis Griffith. 
 
Griffith, Mary R Lowery (18j45-1897 aged 51) – wife of Matthew A 
Griffith who served in the CSA 7, SC infantry Comapany G (also 
believed to be buried at Zoar). One child recorded: William Lowery 
Griffith Sr. 
 
Griffith, Matthew Abney Wills (1840 – 1920 aged 80) – married to 
Mary R Lowery Griffith.  
 
Griffith, Sallie Elsie Duffie (189 – 1965 aged 75) – married to William 
Lowery Griffith Sr. Children are Rose Anna Griffith Coleman, Martha 
Helen Griffith Hawkins, Raymond Matthew Griffith, PFC James 
Malcolm “Cotton” Griffith, and William Lowry Griffith Jr. 
  
Griffith, William (1797 – 1882 aged 84) – Tombstone inscription: “His 
Plea Saved Zoar Church from Abandonment” Married to Mary “Polly” 
Abney Griffith, his parents were Cpt Joseph Griffith Sr and Mary 
Anne Boulware Griffith. Children: Martha Griffith Yarborough (buried 
at Butler), John Abney Griffith Sr., Henry W Griffith, Andrew B. 
Griffith, Anna Griffith Abney, Amanda Griffith Goodman, Sophia 
Isabella Griffith Sheppard, and Matthew Abney Wills Griffith. 
 
Hazel, Andrew Grady (1899 – 1990 aged 90) – parents were William 
Henry and Emma Malinda “Linnie” Hazel. Married to Iris Bridges 
Hazel. They had one daughter named Lynette. Lynette married a 
Paul Geddings from NY, who was injured by a grenade in service but 
lived for years afterward. Their daughter Ann Geddings lives on 
Yarborough Road, near the old Zoar School / Community Center. 
After his wife Iris died, he was in the nursing home and married 
again. 
 
Hazel, Emma Malinda “Linnie” Ramey Hazel (1856 – 1918 aged 62). 
Her parents were Nathaniel P. “Nathan” and Harriet “Hattie” King 
Ramey. She was married to William Henry Hazel. Their children 
were: B. Clinton Hazel, Bertha Hazel Berry, Homer Dixon Hazel, 
Lucia M Hazel Edwards, Sam W Hazel Sr, Andrew Grady Hazel. 
Inscription: Mother – We will meet again where there will be no 
parting. 
 
Hazel, Iris Bridges (1903 – 1981 aged 78) – married to Grady Hazel. 
 
Hazel, Nannie G Rambo (1893 – 1922 aged 29) – Wife of Robert 
Peirce Hazel  
 
Hazel, Robert Peirce (1891 – 1929 aged 37) – husband of Nannie G 
Rambo Hazel. 
 
Hazel, William Henry Hazel (1854-1922 aged 67) – His parents were 
L Berry Hazel and Martha Smith Hazel. He was married to Emma 
Malinda “Linne” Ramey Hazel. He was a mechanic, and had 6 
children: B Clinton Hazel, Bertha Hazel Berry, Homer Dixon Hazel, 
Lucia M Hazel Edwards, Sam W Hazel Sr, and Andrew Grady Hazel. 
The inscription on his tombstone reads: Father – We will meet again 
where there will be no parting.

Confederate States of America 7th SC Regt. He was married to Sarah 
A Turner Holt. Their children were Sumter Daniel “Sump” Holt and

Definitions 
• Baptized members are people who have been baptized by water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and 
who wish to be (or in the case of infants and children — are sponsored to be) members of a local congregation of the 
United Methodist Church using the whole of Baptismal Covenant I or II. 
• Professing members are those who have professed the faith of this church themselves, using the language and ritual 
of Baptismal Covenant I. (Note: As of the 2004 Book of Discipline, the vows printed in Baptismal Covenant I, II and IV 
must be used for professing membership in this church. Baptismal Covenant III should thus no longer be used unless 
the Disciplinary vows are used in place of those printed. See Book of Discipline 2004, paragraph 217). 
Both of those categories of membership represent people who are members both of The United Methodist Church and 
of the particular local congregation. 
• Affiliate members are professing members of another United Methodist Church who may be temporarily far from 
their home congregation and wish to connect with the life, ministry, and watch-care of a congregation nearer to where 
they now are for a time. 
• Associate members are non-United Methodists currently located at some distance from their home church. They 
have been baptized by water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in another Christian denomination, wish 
to connect with a local United Methodist Church, but wish to retain their current denominational affiliation rather 
than become professing members of The United Methodist Church while in their current location. 
  
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UMC MEMBERSHIP TYPE AND MEMBERSHIP STATUS 
Membership Type Overview: Affiliate members are already professing members of The United Methodist Church but retain 
membership in another local United Methodist Church.  Associate Members belong to another denomination and are not 
seeking membership in The United Methodist Church. 
Membership Type Details: 
1. The baptized membership of a local United Methodist church shall include all baptized people who have received 
Christian baptism in the local congregation or elsewhere, or whose 
membership has been transferred to the local United Methodist church subsequent to baptism in some other congregation. 
2. The professing membership of a local United Methodist church shall include all baptized people who have come into 
membership by profession of faith through appropriate services of the baptismal covenant in the ritual or by transfer 
from other churches. 
3. For statistical purposes, church membership is equated to the number of people listed on the roll of professing 
members.  
4. All baptized or professing members of any local United Methodist church are members of the worldwide United 
Methodist connection and members of the church universal. 
¶ 227. A professing member of The United Methodist Church, of an affiliated autonomous Methodist or united church, or 
of a Methodist church that has a concordat agreement with The United Methodist Church, who resides for an extended period 
in a city or community at a distance from the member’s home church, may on request be enrolled as an affiliate member of a 
United Methodist church located in the vicinity of the temporary residence. The home pastor shall be notified of the affiliate 
membership.  Such membership shall entitle the person to the fellowship of that church, to its pastoral care and oversight, and 
to participation in its activities, including the holding of office; except such as would allow one to vote in a United Methodist 
body other than the local church (this specifically refers to the office of Lay Member to Annual Conference). However, that 
person shall be counted and reported as a professing member of the home church only.  
A member of another denomination may become an associate member but may not become a voting member of the 
church council.  Special Note: Although associate members cannot vote as part of the church council, they can, with the 
exception of Lay Member of Annual Conference, hold church office and in that capacity vote as part of church committees to 
whom they belong such as Trustees, Finance, SPRC, Lay Leadership, etc. 
¶ 230.3. The Constituency Roll, containing the names and addresses of such persons as are not members of the 
church concerned, including unbaptized children, youth, and adults whose names are not on the membership record, and other 
nonmembers for whom the local church has pastoral responsibility. 
Membership Status, on the other hand, is defined by the local church and has more to do with a member’s participation. 
Typical definitions of status may include: 
• Active 
• Inactive 
• Homebound 
• Military 
• School (College) 
• Nursing Home 
• Institutionalized 
Conclusion: If you are a member of a United Methodist congregation in another community, you can become an 
Affiliate Member for the period of time you are with us.  Alternatively, if you are a member of another denomination, 
you can become an Associate Member.  Good news: neither of these relationships affects your church membership in 
your home community. Associate membership entitles you to the same privileges and pastoral care as our other 
members. More good news: If you choose, you can attend committee business meetings, propose and vote on 
motions the same as the regular members with the exception of those of the Church Council. Furthermore, you can 
also take any leadership position as an officer of our congregation excluding that of Lay Member to Annual 
Conference. Lastly, affiliate membership allows you to do all that Associate members can plus vote as part of the

Lyman Property Records

Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, Ridgeville

Mount Tabor United Methodist Church
Mount Tabor, first called Ridgeville Methodist Church, was the first church in 
Ridgeville in 1850. It was organized by persons moving into the new railroad town of 
Ridgeville who were former members of nearby Cypress and Zion Methodist Churches. 
The first church, a rude log building, was located on the comer lot of Church 
Street which faces the present post office. Church Street derived its name from that 
church. The first pastors there were John Kelly and Francis Mood of the Cypress Circuit. 
In 1871 the church relocated to Main Street on the comer later known as the
Smith home which was close to today’s Baptist Church. Mrs. A.M. Mims, in her 1938 
town history, described the second church as a rectangular rough frame building (50’ x 
40’) with a small parsonage to the rear.
As the town grew, the church grew and soon a larger building was needed.  They 
found the ideal location on South Main Street; it was earlier owned by Dr.   D.  A.  Pendarvis 
but now the property of Mrs. Josephine Cordes who lived across the street. The trustees 
purchased the 120’ x 300’ lot on which they built the large (82’ x 56’) new church. The 
builder was Mr. John Howell of St. George who was the former county superintendant of 
education. When the lovely, well furnished sanctuary was completed in 1891, the church 
was renamed Mt. Tabor.
Next, they built a new school in the area behind the church. The school, called 
Ridgeville (or Mt.Tabor) Academy and teachers’ home, served town children well until 
the Ridgeville public school opened in 1913. The church’s side street- Academy Street­
still serves as a reminder of a century ago when this sacred lot was a center of learning 
for both spiritual and secular needs of the town’s youth.
The church building remained unchanged until 1946 when Sunday school rooms, 
a social hall and bathrooms were added. In 1958, Reverend Clyde Cheezem led the 
church to brick in and remodel the exterior. The porch and steps were added and 
completed the present appearance.
In 1995, under Reverend Harold Glover, we embarked on an interior renovation 
which included repairs, painting and new lighting fixtures. The MAG (middle age group) 
did re-wiring, painting, lowered ceilings, and many, many other services in the social hall 
and other rooms, as well as the exterior landscaping. The beautiful steeple was added in 
1996.
For almost half a century this church flourished as a forerunner of Sunday school, 
Epworth League, MYF, Ladies Missionary Society (1911), and other Methodist programs 
in the Charleston district. Formerly, a part of the historic Cypress Circuit, Mount Tabor 
has been a part of the Ridgeville Circuit since 1884 and a member of the Walterboro 
District since 1974.
Our greatest need today is to attain new families with children and youth.
