Mary-Patterson Suggs ’24 knows how difficult it can be for students lacking clinical
experience to choose career specialties in health care.
For that reason, Suggs, a biology major on the pre-med track from Charleston, South
Carolina, picked Clinical Internship in Medicine as the final Interim course of her Wofford
career.
“I’m a senior and have some pretty big decisions coming up,” Suggs says. “I wanted to
challenge myself and explore at least some of the options out there. Interim is such a special
tradition, and, this being my last one, I wanted to make the most of it.”
Suggs was one of 25 Terriers in the course, which was open to juniors and seniors who plan
to apply to medical school or pursue careers in health care-related fields.

‘Under the Eye of Power’
Dr. Colin Dickey is the third speaker in Wofford’s new “Defining or Dividing?: Issues in American Culture
and History” series.
Dr. Colin Dickey, associate professor of creative writing for National University, will speak at
Wofford College as part of the college’s new “Defining or Dividing?: Issues in American
Culture and History” series. Dickey will speak at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, in Leonard
Auditorium.
Dickey is the author of “Under the Eye of Power: How Fear of Secret Societies Shapes
American Democracy.” He explores how and why paranoia and conspiratorial thinking have
been consistent and fundamental elements in American social and political thought since the
republic's foundation.
Dickey has written five other books, including the 2016 NPR Great Read “Ghostland: An
American History in Haunted Places.” Copies of selected titles will be available for purchase
and signature.
Venturing in Vietnam
Students in the Vietnam: Past, Present and Future Interim class pose for a photo in Há»™i An, one of the
places they visited during January.
Julia Richardson ’24 followed her fascination for religious traditions to Vietnam in January.
In the Land of the Blue Dragon, Richardson, a Chinese, philosophy and religious studies
major from Moore, South Carolina, found inspiration for her future academic pursuits.
“I plan on pursuing a Ph.D. in Buddhist studies, and I have research interests surrounding
Buddhism in the contemporary world,” Richardson says. “The temples I saw and experienced
in Vietnam strengthened these interests.”
Richardson was one of 15 students who participated in the Vietnam: Past, Present and
Future Interim course taught by Dr. Yongfang Zhang, associate professor of Chinese, and Dr.
Youmi Efurd, museum curator.

‘Touchy Subjects’
Maggie Genoble ’24 with “I Think I Broke a Nail,” the centerpiece of her exhibition now on display in the
Richardson Family Art Gallery.
Maggie Genoble ’24 dives into complex ideas about the modern dilemma of bodily awareness
in the digital age in her exhibition “Touchy Subjects.”
The exhibition is on display through Feb. 28 in the Richardson Family Art Gallery. Genoble,
the 2023-24 Whetsell Fellow, will give an artist talk at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22 in the gallery. The
exhibition and the talk are free and open to the public.
Genoble, an art history and studio art double major from Jonesville, South Carolina, took
inspiration for her sculpture exhibit from Donna J. Harraway’s book “A Cyborg Manifesto,”
which explores ideas of feminism and materialism through the lens of technology, as well as
an interwoven connection between nature and machine.

Solid grounds
Students learned about the process of coffee-making, from roasting to brewing, in the Interim course For
the Love of Coffee. They shared their knowledge during a community coffee celebration on Jan. 29.
Before taking the For the Love of Coffee course during Interim, iced lattes from a national
chain were the be-all, end-all for Sarah Greenlee ’24. Greenlee, an international affairs and
Spanish double major from Spartanburg, South Carolina, and her group scored the top prize
in the class’ brewing competition.
“My palate matured to enjoying many flavor notes and roast styles,” Greenlee says. “It was
incredible to explore the range coffee has and the community it brings.”
Caroline Doss ’24, an English and Spanish double major from Greensboro, North Carolina,
echoed the fascination with the social and cultural impact of coffee, and wouldn’t have
experienced her last Interim any other way.
“This class has been the best start to my last semester at Wofford,” Doss says. “I tried unique
coffee with interesting flavors from all around the world, and I loved showcasing our new
brewing skills at the community coffee exhibition.”

Terriers Startup Challenge ignites entrepreneurs

Cohen Kellogg ’26, a finance major from Deephaven, Minnesota, claimed the top $4,000
prize during the eighth Terrier Startup Challenge in McMillan Theater in the Mungo Student
Center.
Kellogg’s venture, Window Washing Guy, and 12 other concepts created by students were
featured during the pitch competition. Each team had four minutes to present their ideas to a
panel of judges for a chance to win a portion of $10,000 in startup funding.
“It means so much to be able to invest these funds in my dream,” Kellogg says. “I am going to
work on trademarking my company, buying marketing materials and advertisements and
putting together the next steps for franchising.”

Epps earns volunteer of the year award

John Elliot Epps ’24 began volunteering in 2022 at the Free Medical Clinic in Columbia, South
Carolina, and quickly became known for his willingness to serve in any capacity.
For his efforts, Epps, a biology major from Columbia, was recently named the clinic’s
volunteer of the year for 2024.
“He does anything we ask of him with no complaints,” says Freddie Strange Jr., the clinic’s
executive director. “He goes above and beyond what we would normally ask a volunteer to
do, whether that’s cleaning parking lots, helping me make repairs to the building or helping
patients with their electronic devices.”

Shaan Chhabra ’25 explores health care in India

In January, Shaan Chhabra ’25, a biology major from Greenville, South Carolina, journeyed
to Ahmedabad, India, and shadowed Dr. Sagar Betai, a practicing neurologist. During his
time there, Chhabra found inspiration to incorporate some of India’s health care practices into
his pursuits in neurology.
“I want to implement some of the practices from India, like better patient care,” Chhabra says.
“As a future neurologist, I aim to treat patients individually, not as mere numbers or statistics.”
Under the tutelage of Betai, Chhabra divided his time between two hospitals: SGVP Hospital
and a civil hospital in Gandhinagar. SGVP caters to the city population, while the civil hospital
serves villagers with fewer resources.
At SGVP Hospital, Chhabra observed neurological examinations and procedures. He even
conducted some general examinations, including taking vitals.

Cosper presents at global marine science event
Kendall Cosper ’24 channeled her passion for the ocean into an inspirational research experience.
Kendall Cosper ’24, a physics major from Jacksonville, Florida, showcased her summer
research at the 2024 Ocean Sciences Meeting this past February in New Orleans.
Cosper’s research, fueled by her passion for marine science, was compiled during her
participation in a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program she found
through her advisor, Dr. Mackay Salley ’95, professor of physics.
“When I found that REU opportunity, I really liked it, as well as the research that my mentor
was doing,” Cosper says. “It involved a lot of different aspects of biophysics, such as studying
the ways animals swim in the water and analyzing data from ocean measurements in
physical ways.”

Daniel Brasington ’25 studied abroad in Denmark’s capital during Interim.
Daniel Brasington ’25, an economics major from Woodruff, S.C., shares his transformative
Interim experience studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. Despite the winter chill, he
found warmth in the Danish concept of “hygge,” a feeling of contentment and coziness.
Through connections with locals and embracing a culture focused on quality of life, not
extravagance, he discovered a second home.

Wofford Theatre presents “Failure: A Love Story” April 25-27
and May 1-4
Wofford Theatre presents “Failure: A Love Story” by Philip Dawkins and directed by Mark Ferguson at 8
p.m., April 25-27 and May 1-4 in the Jerome Johnson Richardson Theatre.
Featuring talking animals, a whimsical chorus and more than 20 original songs and new
arrangements of classics by Rachel Johnson ’24, “Failure: A Love Story” is a magical,
musical fable that playfully, but pointedly, asks us to consider how we (mis-) understand
failure, success and the power of love.
Tickets are $12 for the public, $10 for Wofford employees and $5 for Wofford students.
Seating is limited. The box office opens one hour before showtime.

Alexis DeLoach ’25 wins award at Southeastern Biologists
annual meeting
DeLoach credits her interest in coral bleaching to her time as a student in Dr. Geoffrey Mitchell’s research
methods course.
Alexis DeLoach ’25 won the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award in Cell and Molecular
Biology at the Association of Southeastern Biologists 85th annual meeting held March 20-23
in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
DeLoach led a research team that included Sebastian Sisk ’24, a biology major from Inman,
South Carolina, and alumnus Daiven Sharma ’24. She presented evidence for the phosphate-
dependent control of symbiont cell division in the model anemone Exaiptasia diaphana.
Dr. Geoffrey Mitchell, associate professor and chair of Wofford College’s biology department,
handpicked DeLoach, Sisk and Sharma for the conference.
“I would not pick someone to present at this conference unless I had a lot of confidence in
them,” says Mitchell. “Alexis has always demonstrated maturity, and she is incredibly bright
and hardworking. So, it was a no-brainer for me.”

Wofford College to host 2024 South Carolina Innocence &
Justice Conference
Wofford College will host the 2024 South Carolina Innocence & Justice Conference on
Friday, May 3, in the Harley Room of the Richardson Physical Activities Building. The
conference, organized by the South Carolina Innocence Initiative, will bring together leaders
in the legal arena to explore the causes, challenges and remedies associated with wrongful
convictions in South Carolina and to chart a path forward for the state.
The conference will feature a lineup of distinguished speakers that include Fernando
Bermudez, who spent 19 years in prison before he was exonerated, interviewed by Craig
Melvin ’01, a member of Wofford’s Board of Trustees and a national correspondent and
anchor for NBC’s “TODAY” show; Chris Fabricant, Innocence Project attorney and national
expert on junk forensic science; as well as several prosecutors and innocence attorneys.

Dixon Dedman ’03 featured in Forbes.com for whiskey
blending innovation

Dixon Dedman ’03 continues to make waves in the whiskey industry. Dedman was recently
featured by Forbes.com for his innovative approach to blending.
The Wofford alumnus relaunched Kentucky Owl in 2014 and has been praised for his
creation of popular bourbon and rye blends. His latest project, 2XO Kentucky Straight
Bourbon Whiskey, includes an everyday blend known as the Oak Series and a series of
limited-release, small-batch blends called the Icon Series.
Dedman’s new 2XO Kiawah Blend, the fourth release in his Icon Series, boasts a unique
story behind each bottle. Rather than directly infusing a South Carolina influence into the
Kiawah Blend, Dedman drew thematic and emotional inspiration from the state while tasting
whiskey samples on the beach. His blending philosophy emphasizes starting with a blank
canvas to create the best composition possible.

Thirty Terriers inducted into Phi Beta Kappa
Wofford students gather for a group photo following their induction into Phi Beta Kappa.
Thirty Wofford College students and recent graduates were inducted as members-in-course
during the college’s Phi Beta Kappa ceremony on April 18.
Students are normally considered for election to Wofford’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter after they
have earned 100 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.6. Election is not automatic.
Resident members of the chapter consider scholarship, character, intellectual curiosity,
creative thinking, diversity of academic interests and pursuits, and other factors in the election
process. The chapter may elect only 10% of a graduating class in any one year.
