Imagining Spartanburg
A grant from the Spartanburg County Foundation inspired Dr. Alysa Handelsman's class to throw a
Christmas party for the Determined Minds after-school program.
Early in their first semester at Wofford College, Sydney Heslop ’28, Maura Jackson ’28,
Carlee Mason ’28 and Grant Owen ’28 walked into the Robert Hett Chapman III Center for
Philanthropy unsure of what to expect. They had been given the assignment by Dr. Alysa
Handelsman of getting to know Spartanburg and some of its leaders, and the Spartanburg
County Foundation seemed like a good place to start. 
“When we walked in, Troy Hanna, the president and CEO of the Spartanburg County
Foundation, just happened to be walking out of a meeting. We talked for 20 minutes,” says
Owen, a native of Setauket, New York, who plans to major in finance at Wofford.
The time with Hanna made an impression on the Wofford students, but it also made an
impression on Hanna, who, along with others from the SCF, surprised the student a few
weeks later with a “Just Because” ambush philanthropy grant. The students were given the
grant with the expectation that they identify and donate the money to a local nonprofit, and
they chose to use the funds to aid Determined Minds, an after-school program with
Spartanburg Housing.

Fashion in French
Tianna Kidd ’25 (left) is researching fashion and identity in Cameroon and Morocco.
If walking up to strangers and asking them questions is tough, try doing it in another
language.
That’s what Tianna Kidd ’25 has done every day in the French-speaking country of Cameroon
this fall as Wofford’s 2024-25 Presidential International Scholar.
Each year Wofford’s Presidential International Scholar is selected by the college’s president
as “the student most likely to make a difference in the future.” The scholarship rewards
students who have shown a passion for service learning and global intellectual curiosity with
the funding to conduct independent research in non-traditional locations around the world.
Kidd, a biology and French double major from Greenwood, South Carolina, has used the
opportunity this semester to study fashion and identity in Yaoundé, the capital city of
Cameroon.

Galloping with Grace
Grace Loughlin ’27 competed in the prestigious National Horse Show and placed first in her division.
Grace Loughlin ’27 brought home a victory at the National Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse
Park in Lexington, Kentucky, earning first place in her Amateur Hunters division.
“It’s such an honor to get to compete at this venue, let alone win,” says Loughlin of the
National Horse Show, which has hosted some of the highest-achieving riders and horses in
the world. This year, Loughlin was one of only 15 women in her section invited to compete.
This is not Loughlin’s first time placing nationally. Last year, she ranked third nationally in the
same section of the National Horse Show as an amateur rider. This year she improved by two
places to take the top spot.

All-SoCon Faculty and Staff
Recipients of the All-Southern Conference Faculty and Staff Team were announced at the men’s
basketball game on Dec. 4.
Dr. Jessica Tomkins, assistant professor of history, and the Wofford Workday Rockstars were
named to the All-Southern Conference Faculty and Staff Team.
Beyond teaching about Egyptology and ancient history, Tomkins has led various travel
programs, including accompanying Wofford’s men’s basketball team during their 2024 tour of
Egypt and Greece. She also is one of the coordinators of the New Faculty Program, helping
welcome and orient new Wofford faculty members.
The Wofford Workday Rockstars are a cross-functional team tasked with implementing
Workday as the college’s next enterprise resource system. Its members are Trey Arrington,
Kent Brannon, Courtney Dobbins, Lani Foster, Brittany McDowell, Franklin Pettit and
Raymond Ruff.

Wofford names three new trustees

The South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church elected three new
trustees to the Wofford College Board of Trustees on June 12 in Greenville, South Carolina.
The new trustees are Catherine Codispoti ’03 of St. Louis, Missouri; Jack McBride of
Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Matt McCoy ’97 of Matthews, North Carolina.
The board’s officers will continue to be Chairman Christopher A. P. Carpenter ’90, Vice Chair
Ashley Richardson Allen and the Rev. William F. Malambri III ’98, secretary.
“We are delighted to welcome Catherine, Jack and Matt to the board of trustees,” says Nayef
Samhat, Wofford’s president. “Their expertise, dedication to excellence and commitment to
Wofford College students will enrich our board as we continue to advance Wofford’s mission.”

Samuel Cornett ’26 gains real-world experience at 1670
Wealth Management
Samuel Cornett ’26, left, is mentored by Jeremy Bishop ’03, a managing partner with 1670 Wealth
Management.
In February, Samuel Cornett ’26, a finance major from Nicholasville, Kentucky, decided to
seek summer internship opportunities near Wofford College’s campus. He searched “wealth
management” and found 1670 Wealth Management among the top results.
“I wanted real-world experience, and, with my summer football schedule, I was looking for
something in the area” says Cornett, a quarterback for the Terriers and member of the
student-managed James-Atkins Investment Fund. “They were only about a mile from
campus, so I sent them an email.”
It was a Friday evening when Cornett’s email arrived. Jeremy Bishop ’03 and Brent Babb, the
firm’s managing partners, were getting ready to head out the door.
“It literally came in out of the blue,” says Bishop, a Spartanburg native who received a
bachelor’s degree in government from Wofford.

Rod Ray’s inspirational journey becomes Amazon Best
Seller
Wofford men’s tennis coach Rod Ray has led the Terriers for 25 years.
Wofford men’s tennis coach Rod Ray’s first book “Hard Comes First” is an Amazon Best
Seller. The book, published June 1 by Game Changer Publishing, contains stories from his
coaching career and his life as a father of a child with autism. It ranks in the top 100 titles on
Amazon’s Personal Success and Spirituality, Men’s Inspirational Spirituality and Men’s
Personal Growth lists.
“It is crazy,” says Ray, who has coached tennis at Wofford for 25 years. “I have read a lot of
sports books. Typically, they are about how someone achieved massive success like winning
the Super Bowl or the World Cup. … That is not my story. That is not this book. … This book
is about how life can be hard, but you can have a great time in the midst of those struggles.”
Throughout the book, Ray uses personal anecdotes, practical advice and insightful reflections
to communicate how embracing and overcoming challenges is essential for personal growth
and achieving success, both on the court and in life.

Medicine and the Liberal Arts concentration offers broader
health care perspectives
Dr. Anne Rodrick, Reeves Family Professor of History, teaches a senior seminar course for students
pursuing the medicine and the liberal arts concentration.
Eliana Boone ’24 chose a concentration in medicine and the liberal arts because she thought
it “sounded cool.” She didn’t realize it would fuel her passion for emergency medicine and her
desire to go to medical school.
“Going into emergency medicine means that I would come into contact with many different
types of people,” says Boone, who just graduated with a major in biology and a minor in
sociology and anthropology as well as the concentration in medicine and the liberal arts.
Wofford had a medical humanities program that was started several years ago by Dr. Charles
Kay, professor emeritus of philosophy, and Dr. Bob Moss, Larry H. McCalla Professor of
Biology emeritus. As both professors approached retirement in 2019, the program was recast
with the title of medicine and the liberal arts.

Dr. Timothy Schmitz, provost of Wofford College, has announced Dean’s List honors for the
spring 2024 semester. Students achieving a 3.60 grade-point average or higher after earning
at least 12 academic hours qualify for the Dean’s List. See who made it HERE.
Wofford named a Best Value College by the Princeton
Review for 2024
Wofford College consistently earns national recognition for its academic excellence and commitment to
student success.
The Princeton Review continues to rank Wofford College as one of its Best Value Colleges.
Wofford is among 209 institutions named to the publication’s Best Value Colleges for 2024
list. The rankings are based on return-on-investment ratings according to more than 40 data
points that cover academics, affordability and career outcomes of graduates.
More than 650 private and public colleges and universities were surveyed for the list
announced on June 20. The institutions chosen had the publication’s highest ROI ratings
based on information on academic offerings, cost, financial aid, career services, graduation
rates and student debt. Wofford received an ROI rating of 89 out of 99.

Remembering Dr. Bobby Gene “B.G.” Stephens
Dr. Bobby Gene "B.G." Stephens ’57 shaped Wofford through his visionary leadership in academics and
technology.
Dr. Bobby Gene “B.G.” Stephens ’57 died on June 26, 2024, at his home in Spartanburg. He
remained a character, even in his last interviews with the college, sharing his experiences
helping the college develop the first Interim and navigate desegregation, co-education and a
strategic vision that led to a campus technology network and the Franklin W. Olin Building.
As academic dean of the college from 1972 until 1980, his name is on every diploma
awarded during that period, something he considered a great honor. Prior to that, he was a
dynamic professor of chemistry at Wofford. After his tenure as dean, he served as president
of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, before returning to Wofford in 1986 as vice
president of technology, retiring in 2000.

Craig Melvin ’01, a co-host on NBC’s TODAY, introduced Alex Horn ’24 as part of the show’s
weeklong series “TODAY CELEBRATES THE CLASS OF 2024.” Horn appeared on the show
to share his experiences and offer tips on money management for college students. The
segment aired during the third hour of TODAY on Wednesday, May 22.

Wofford College holds 170th Commencement
Wofford College held Commencement for the Class of 2024 and recognized honorary degree and award
recipients.
Wofford College awarded 421 baccalaureate degrees during its 170th Commencement on
May 19. Despite a little rain, spirits remained high as the ceremony moved to the Jerry
Richardson Indoor Stadium.
During the ceremony, the college conferred honorary degrees upon three individuals: Betty
James Montgomery, Dr. Daniel B. Morrison Jr. ’75 and Tony L. Thomas.
Special teaching awards were presented to Dr. Kimberly Hall, associate professor of English,
and Dr. Natalie Spivey, associate professor and chair of the Department of Biology. Hall
received the Philip Covington Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Humanities and Social
Sciences. Spivey received the Roger Milliken Award for Excellence in the Teaching of
Science.
The college presented the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards to student recipient
Jack Galbraith and non-student recipient Craig Burnett ’68.. The student recipient of the Mary
Mildred Sullivan Award was Arnise Wright. The non-student recipient was Spartanburg City
Councilwoman Ruth Littlejohn.

The Hon. Costa Pleicones ’65 delivers Commencement
address
The Hon. Costa Pleicones ’65 urged graduates to use their liberal arts education to combat bigotry and
foster civil discourse.
The Hon. Costa Pleicones delivered the keynote address to the Class of 2024. Pleicones is a
member of the college’s board of trustees and retired chief justice of the South Carolina
Supreme Court.
“Your generation has the awesome responsibility of preserving, protecting and defending
both the Constitution and the republic it created,” Pleicones says. “You can do so by shining a
light on the rampant deceit and misinformation daily delivered on cable and social media; by
engaging in civil, not hostile or rancorous discourse; by listening thoughtfully to points of view
that run counter to your own; by recognizing there may be virtue in those opposing points of
view; and even by adopting thoughtful and cogent positions that on first impression caused
you discomfort.”

Class of 1974 celebrates 50th reunion
Members of Wofford’s Class of 1974 rekindled friendships and created new memories during
Commencement Weekend.
Wofford’s Class of 1974 began with 254 students in the fall of 1970 when the college had
1,075 students. During their first year, the college’s board of trustees voted to admit women
as day students and the late Robert Bernard Leach, former assistant dean of students,
became Wofford’s first Black professional staff member. The Sandor Tezler Library was also
named that year.
In the fall of 1973, Eddie Coffey was named a Rhodes scholar, the college’s first since 1947.
Coffey delivered the Commencement address in 1974, one of the few times in the college’s
history that a member of the graduating class was given that honor.
The weekend reunion for the class included a welcome back lunch, a tour of campus, a
cocktail hour and a special dinner program with President Samhat. Class members also
participated in the commencement ceremony, donning robes for the occasion.
Honors Convocation celebrates outstanding Terriers
Recipients of Wofford College’s 2024 Heart of the Terrier Leadership awards gather onstage during the
college’s Honors Convocation.
Dozens of Wofford College students were recognized for academic excellence, leadership 
and citizenship on May 17 at the college’s annual Honors Convocation held in the Jerry 
Richardson Indoor Stadium.
President Nayef Samhat introduced Tianna Kidd ’25, a biology and French double major from 
Greenwood, South Carolina, as Wofford’s Presidential International Scholar for the 2024-25 
academic year. Kidd, the 40th recipient of the scholarship, hopes to journey to Cameroon, 
Ghana and Morocco, where she will conduct research for her project “Beyond Aesthetics: 
Exploring Fashion as Identity.”
Academic departments also recognized their outstanding students, and a variety of other 
leadership and citizenship awards were presented during the event.
