Church Histories 
 
 New Hope Church takes its name from the New Hope 
Community located eight miles west of the Chester city limits.  
The first Methodist Society at New Hope was started in 1832 and 
formally organized in 1843.  It was ministered to by “circuit 
riders”.  They were preachers who traveled on horseback, covering 
a large area, and preached whenever they arrived.  The “Chester 
Circuit” was created in 1853 and included New Hope, Armenia, 
Capers Chapel and Bethel Churches. 
 The first church was a log house adjacent to the cemetery.  
The present church building was built in 1861 on donated land 
with the cemetery adjoining it.  The church was renovated in 1884, 
with a fellowship hall and kitchen added in the 1930’s.  In 1963 the 
cemetery was enlarged.  Classrooms and central air & heat were 
added to the church at that time. 
 In 1875, Sunday School was organized.  It was held every 
Sunday, while preaching services alternated between the churches 
of the circuit who were served by the same pastor.  The Women’s 
Missionary Society was organized in 1886. 
 New Hope is located at 2149 West Chester School Road, 
Chester in the Baton Rouge Township.
