correspondent Ellison Barber ’12 delivering the keynote address and sharing her inspiring
story.

Meet the Class of 2028
Wofford’s Class of 2028, selected from the largest applicant pool in the college’s 170-year
history, consists of 427 students from 24 states and five countries.
Here’s an overview of the class:
The class has 117 legacy students, which means they are following a family member
to Wofford.
Student-athletes total 115.
Pell Grant recipients total 89 students.
The class has 58 first-generation college students.
There are 45 Palmetto Fellows.

message
Dear Wofford community,
I continue to think of the start of the fall semester — with the excitement of move-in,
orientation, advising sessions, hall meetings and convocation — as the most wonderful time
of the year. We welcome new Terriers, and they begin their educational journey full of
promise and ready to take advantage of the many opportunities Wofford offers.
We open this academic year with 1,821 students, including 427 first-year students and 23
transfers. We received the most applications ever for students interested in joining the Class
of 2028, which meant our selectivity broke another record. Housing capacity is at 95%, and
current student retention is above 92%, an indication that students feel engaged and
supported here. We are at our enrollment goal set about five years ago, a level that is ideal
for the college’s 180-acre footprint and faculty size. Because we’ve done a good job of
managing enrollment, the student-to-faculty ratio remains low at 11:1 and the average class
size is 15.

The Career Center Experience

Wofford’s Career Center kicked off the fall semester with its inaugural Career Center
Experience, a three-day professional development program for rising sophomores, juniors
and seniors.
The program, held Aug. 25-27 in Burwell Building, connected about 50 students with alumni
and experts offering career guidance in health care, real estate, human resources and other
professions.
Three career treks enabled students to explore Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, the
Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, The Johnson Group, PwC Spartanburg, Fifth
Third Park and Milliken & Co.
“We want to set students up for a successful academic year and to connect them with
resources that support their career ambitions,” says Curt McPhail ’96, executive director of
the Career Center. “We’re fortunate to have alumni and local leaders who are eager to share
their insights and open doors for students.”

Wofford will observe Constitution Day with lecture by the
Hon. J. Michelle Childs
The Hon. J. Michelle Childs, a judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of
Columbia, will deliver this year’s Linton R. Dunson Constitution Day Lecture.
Judge Childs will present “The Constitution and the Rule of Law: Linchpins to the
Preservation of Democracy” at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, in Leonard Auditorium. This
event is free and open to the public.
Child’s lecture will be followed by a roundtable discussion at 4:30 p.m. with panelists who
include:
The Hon. Jacquelyn D. Austin, judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of South 
Carolina.
The Hon. D. Garrison Hill ’86, associate justice of the Supreme Court of South 
Carolina. The Hon. J. Mark Hayes II ’80, judge of the South Carolina Circuit Court.
Simrin Channa ’26, an international affairs major from Boiling Springs, South 
Carolina.

Hayes honored for public service
More than 40 years ago, the Hon. Mark Hayes ’80 chose to pursue a career in the law
because he wanted to make a difference. In August, he was honored for a career focused on
that goal.
During the 2024 Annual Convention of the South Carolina Association for Justice, Hayes
received the Matthew J. Perry Public Service Award for his more than 21-year career as a
circuit court judge and for the establishment of a statewide Law Day Essay Contest, now
named in his honor.
“During his long career of public service, Judge Hayes has exhibited a keen intellect and
diligent work ethic that has earned him the highest respect from lawyers across the state,”
says Tom Killoren Jr., president of the SCAJ, who presented Hayes with the award. “We will
long reap the rewards of his work with the Law Day Essay Contest and the way it cultivates
civic responsibility and respect for the role of the judiciary in our great democracy. It’s fitting
that he received this award named for the Hon. Matthew J. Perry, who was the first Black
judge from the deep south to be appointed to the federal bench.”

Ties that bind and inspire

When Marga-Rita Van Der Linde ’25 was sworn in as Campus Union president for 2024-25
on April 22, she became the first woman since Claudia Albergotti Ruffin ’11 to serve in the
role. The new vice president, secretary and treasurer are also women, making this the first
all-female executive cabinet since the 1995-96 academic year.
It’s something that Van Der Linde takes seriously but doesn’t dwell on. She and the other
women on the executive council have plans for enhancing the Wofford experience for all
students.
“Wofford has done a great job of putting the students’ needs first, and I want to continue
building on the foundation that the previous student body presidents have laid,” says Van Der
Linde, who is joined on the cabinet by Simrin Channa ’25, vice president; Julia Brooks ’25,
treasurer; and Geneva Kowbeidu ’26, secretary.

Revels hits the airwaves
Dr. Tracy Revels, Laura and Winston Hoy Professor of Humanities, was recently a guest on
the “I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere” podcast. During the segment “Light, Shadows, and
Darkness,” Revels discusses her love for Sherlock Holmes and how she incorporates the
fictional detective’s stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle into her teaching at Wofford. The
segment begins at the 14-minute mark. Listen online.
Revels has also shared her expertise during the Florida Historical Society’s weekly “Florida
Frontiers” radio program. Revels reads and discusses the foreword she wrote for the
society’s republication of Ellen Call Long’s 1882 novel “Florida Breezes.” Listen online.
Wofford’s academic year kicks off with a packed schedule
NBC Correspondent Ellison Barber ’12 will speak at Wofford’s Opening Convocation on Sept. 5.
August features exciting experiences for first-year students, including move-in day and Camp
Greystone. September includes Opening Convocation with guest speaker Ellison Barber ’12
and the annual Mungo Block Party.
Additionally, Wofford will host its first home football game of the season against William &

Kilgo-Clinkscales becomes Wofford’s first alumni house
A new chapter is beginning at Wofford’s historic Kilgo-Clinkscales House.
This fall, the 132-year-old campus landmark, which has been a home for more than 10
Wofford leaders and their families, will become the college’s first dedicated alumni house.
“Traditionally, this has been the dean’s or provost’s home,” says Calhoun Kennedy ’89, vice
president of philanthropy and engagement. “This is a great central location on campus, and
we’re excited for it to be used as a gathering place for our alumni.”
In June, Kennedy and four members of his engagement team relocated their offices from the
Papadopoulos Building to the home’s upper floor. In the coming months, the first floor will be
transformed into a flexible venue for alumni.

On the road again
Terriers gathered for a Summer City Tour event in June atop Nucor Corporation’s public affairs office in
Washington, D.C.
A rooftop overlooking the White House was a high point of this year’s Summer City Tour,
which connected Wofford alumni, staff, current and incoming students and their families in
seven cities, May through August.
At breweries, stadiums and alumni homes, Terriers shared laughter, formed new bonds,
strengthened their ties to the college and welcomed incoming first-year students to Wofford’s
community — building on the success of the tour’s first season in 2023.
“There was a lot of buzz and excitement this year,” says Lindsey Graham, director of alumni
engagement and the tour’s co-founder. “We had more incoming students in attendance

Wofford faculty team unifies diverse elements in Special
Objects exhibition
Although their diverse canvasses might seem to have them focusing in different directions, the six
contributors connect in a common voice through Social Objects.
Social encounters and the objects that mediate interactions shape our world.
That thought-provoking observation introduces Social Objects, an exhibition featuring the
artwork of five Wofford faculty members and a former colleague. The display runs Aug. 30
through Sept. 20 at the Goodyear Arts gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“One thing that connects all of our work is a shared interest in social processes,” says
Michael Webster, associate professor of studio art at Wofford. “In other words, everyone’s
work is based off of how we engage with other people through the use of objects and how
objects can act as mediators between interactions.”

Remembering the Rev. Dr. Otis Turner
The Rev. Dr. Otis Turner with his wife, Patsy, during a visit to Wofford in August 2023.
The Rev. Dr. Otis Turner died on Aug. 2, 2024, at Baptist Medical Center South in
Jacksonville Florida.
Turner walked onto Wofford’s campus in 1972 as the college’s first Black faculty member. His
former student Bob Reeder ’74 likened Turner’s arrival to a rock causing ripples in a pond.
Turner, a former assistant professor of religion, never quite knew the impact he had during
his five years at the college — until August 2023, when he returned to campus with his wife,
Patsy.
During the visit, he spoke with student researchers, toured the campus and reunited with
former students. At a lunch in his honor, Turner was presented with a photo of himself from
the college’s archives that now hangs in the faculty dining room to honor is place as a
trailblazer. The college’s Office for Civil Rights, Compliance and Community Initiatives also
announced that its annual faculty and staff diversity and inclusion award would be renamed in
his honor.
“I did not realize it until I came back on this trip,” Turner revealed. “It’s mind boggling. I had no
idea.”

St James UMC 
 This church was built in 1823 and included in the Cooper River Circuit.   
The Rev. John Davis and Mr. Emanuel Guerry were the principal people in 
building it.  We are informed that this was served for some years by the John 
Davis in the capacity of a local preacher. The church was rebuilt in 1845 by 
Catherine B Lake and one acre of land given for the site by Mrs. Martha 
Dutart. It has members 6 at present.

Currently the Bells are co-owned by Brenda LeFevre and Linda Hill. July 1 Brenda 
LeFevre plans to donate her part to St James Methodist. The prayer is that Tracy/ Merlin 
will continue the bell choir. 
 
4. St James United Methodist will continue until July 1. The Pastor is paid at the beginning of the 
month, last paycheck will be June 1,2024 
 
5. The church elders will make decision on sacraments, Baptism and Communion. Wedding needs 
to be according to the state laws. 
 
6. Will follow Methodist believes/ teaching. (need to check by laws). 
 
7. Currently believe all financial commitments will be met.

Zoar Methodist Church 
Updated as of 4-13-2005 
 
Zoar Methodist Church was one of the earliest established churches in 
Chesterfield County.  The church was built in 1832 on a four-acre plot of land donated 
by Mr. William Robeson.  It was a one-room log building with wooden shutters.  The 
pews were slab benches with no backs.  The pulpit faced the west.  The name Zoar 
was taken from the Bible and means Acity of refuge.  The building was used as a 
community school during the week. 
 
Zoar was first supported by missions.  Members brought eggs to the treasurer, Mr. 
Ross, who sold them to help pay expenses.  The young church could not get a full-time 
minister so a local minister, Rev. Rainwater, delivered the first sermons.  Rev. Quick 
from Marlboro County would occasionally travel to Zoar and preach.   
 
The first full-time minister was Rev. Malcolm Wood.  He lived on the Robeson 
quarters on Highway 9 and walked approximately three miles to church each Sunday.  
He served until 1849 when the Rev. W.L. Pegues came.  Some of the early officials 
were Mike, Johnny and William Davis.  Mr. Sam Timmons was the first Superintendent. 
 Mr. Timmons discovered the spring on the north side of the church which continuously 
supplied the church with water.  Some of the early Superintendents included Edward 
Parker, Isac Rivers, Sr., Isac Rivers, Jr., Jimmy Teal (better known as ABud@), J.W.T. 
Rivers, C.W. Teal, John N. Campbell and Mrs. Hattie C. Teal.  Their first Sunday School 
literature was The Blue Back Speller which was followed by The Catechism, and 
eventually The Methodist Quarterlies.  Some of the first Sunday School teachers were 
Miss Nancy Davis, Mrs. Ella Teal Boatright, Mrs. Laura Davis, Mrs. C.W. Teal and Mr. 
Bill Davis.              
After the first full time minister, Rev. Malcolm Wood, Zoar has been served by the 
following pastors:  W.L. Pegues; J.W. Murray; C.D. Rowell; J.W. McRoy; J.E. Frierson; 
W.H. Whitaker; J.K. Kilgo; J.L. Harley; R.A. Young; R.R. Dagnell; J.N. Isom; J.P. 
Attaway; A.F. Berry; N.L. Wiggins; J.J. Stevenson; F.M. Duke; J.T. Fowler; L.L. 
Bedenbaugh; J.L. Tyler; B.J. Guess; L.E. Peeler; W.P. Way; Gobe Smith; D.N. Busby; 
E.S. Dunbar; Paul Whitaker; W.A. Beckham; T.C. Shuler; Victor R. Hickman; Kenneth 
W. Bedenbaugh; M.W. Harvey; Barbee Parsons; B.C. Gleaton; Donald O’Dell; Charles

The church has been rebuilt three times and remodeled four times.  
The pulpit of the original one-room log structure faced the south.  This 
structure was replaced with a wooden sanctuary which was later brick 
veneered.  This new sanctuary seated around 100 and contained stained 
glass windows given by members in memory of loved ones.  Mr. Luther Teal 
and his father built the oak pulpit lectern and hand-carved alter rail.  The 
pulpit faced the south.        
 
The educational building was built in 1956 during the pastorate of Rev. 
Kenneth Bedenbaugh and was dedicated to Mrs. Hattie Campbell Teal who 
served as Sunday School Superintendent for over 33 years.  It contained 
five classrooms and a basement fellowship hall with a kitchen.  All the 
Sunday School rooms contained beautiful stained glass windows donated 
by members.  The fellowship hall replaced Athe hut,@ a small building by 
the spring which had been used for fellowship dinners and fish frys for over 
45 years.       
 
The present sanctuary was built during a major renovation in 1966 
during the pastorate of Rev. Donald O=Dell.  This sanctuary featured a 
steeple.  The building committee, chaired by Tom Miller, consisted of Mary 
E. Davis, treasurer, Horace Crawford, Emsley Freeman and Bill J. Rivers.  
I.B. Merriman of Chesterfield was the builder. 
 
 
The floor plan of the church is in the form of a cross with the main 
entrance at the west and the altar at the east.  This is symbolic of Athe rising 
of the son of righteous.@ This restored the sanctuary to it=s original 
direction of the pulpit facing the west.  This had long been a dream of the 
older members.  The pulpit features a divided chancel so that no barrier 
would be between the outer door and the altar.  Only during communion 
would there be any separation between those who serve at the altar and the 
congregation. 
 
At the left front was the lectern for reading the scriptures.  At the right 
was the pulpit for the sermon.  The choir and musicians were placed on 
either side in so that the altar table with the cross and candles is the focal 
point for them as well as the congregation.  There are three steps leading up 
to the altar table.  These symbolize the holy trinity.  The Christian symbols of 
the Alpha, Omega and the Greek name for Christ were hand carved by Rev. 
O’Dell.  The stained-glass window behind the altar window featured the 
cross and crown.  
 
  The first Building Fund Pledge Sunday was held in November 1965.  
About one-third ($15,000) of the total amount ($45,000) needed was 
pledged on that Sunday.  This amount was added to monies collected over 
a 20 year period by Mrs. Kate Campbell’s elementary SS class for a steeple 
fund.  It is recorded that the first Sunday School Steeple Fund collection was 
13 cents.   
  
The United Methodist Women played a major role in raising the 
balance.  Many bake sales, cloth sales, hat sales and other fundraisers were 
conducted by the women.  Under the direction of Mrs. Ben Rivers, the UMW 
fed The Chesterfield Civitan Club twice a month for about four years at 
$1.65 a plate with the proceeds going to help pay off the mortgage.  The 
debt was paid off and the burning of the mortgage was held on Sunday, 
February 15, 1971. 
 
   In 1987-88,  needlepoint kneeling cushions were custom-designed for 
Zoar by Betsy DeLoache to match the stained glass windows.  They were 
stitched by Donna Freeman, chairman, Bessie Terrell, Clarice Watson, 
Emilyn Gardner, Doris Jean Moore, Jackie Burch, Sallie Short, Susanne 
Davis and Peggy Robeson.  The pattern features ‘I am the vine, you are the 
grapes’ and Christian symbols.  The intricate center section was the first 
cushion completed and was stitched in entirely by Bessie Terrell.  It rests at 
the base of the altar table except during communion.   A coordinating 
cushion for the priedieu (wedding kneeling bench) was commissioned to 
coordinate with the altar cushions and given in memory of Maggie Lee 
Robeson by her children.   
 
In 1992 land directly in front of the church was purchased.  A 
softball/baseball field was built on this property.  It is also used for overflow 
parking.  Three rustic crosses were erected facing Zoar Road.  These 
crosses are decorated during the Christmas and Easter seasons to remind 
travelers of Jesus. 
 
In 1998, The Hut was dismantled, the land cleared and a Children’s 
Park was built around the original spring.  A covered picnic shelter was built 
on The Hut’s location.  Imbedded in the cement floor is the word ‘Zoar’ 
spelled out in brick from the original fireplace in the Hut.  The park features 
a cement basketball court, a horseshoe pit, children’s playground equipment 
and benches.  A hand pump has been installed in the spring.         
 
For over 135 years, Zoar has had an active Sunday School program 
for children and adults.  Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) was organized 
over 55 years ago.  The first Children’s Choir was organized in 1960 under 
the direction of Jack Price.      
  
In 1974, the church began an extensive Summer Program in addition 
to Vacation Church School.  This program features many activities such as 
pizza parties, bowling, pool parties, hot dog suppers, ice cream suppers and 
trips.  The first overnight trip was to Columbia.  Other trips have included 
Charleston, Old Salem, Williamsburg, New York, Washington, cruises to the 
Bahamas, Disney World, Worlds Fair, Myrtle Beach and the mountains of 
North Carolina.   
 
In 1998, Zoar began ‘The Live Nativity Drive-Through.’  This  annual 
event is held on the Sunday night before Christmas and features numerous 
scenes depicting the birth of Christ.  It has evolved into a community effort 
with over 150 people participating.  Over 1,500 people drive through each 
year.   
 
Behind Zoar Church is the cemetery.   The graves probably date back 
to 1832, but no headstone bears this date.  One of the most interesting 
headstones is that of Nancy Ross.  When she died in 1918, her husband, 
James Ross, had a headstone imported from Europe at a cost of $1,800.  
Two of the oldest memorial windows in the church, originally in the old 
sanctuary and now located in the vestibule, are for Nancy Ross and James 
Ross.  He served as church treasurer for many years.  (A sad footnote - 
James Ross does not have a headstone.)   Many changes have been made 
in the cemetery.  At the suggestion of Carnol B.Vaughan in the early 1970’s, 
Tom Miller and the Cemetery Committee oversaw the transition of the 
cemetery into a perpetual care type cemetery.  A beautification program by 
the Zoar Girl Scout troop in 19_____________ added paved walkways,

Thank you for contacting us regarding the SC United Methodist Church Agreement for separation and the 
impacts it may have on your church insurance policy with SMCI.  
 
We have compiled responses to the insurance concerns below: 
 
a. Carrier Financial Ratings - Southern Mutual Church Insurance Co. is ‘A’ Rated by AM Best and falls under 
Category VII. SMCI is rated A’ Unsurpassed with Demotech. 
 
b. Commercial General Liability - We have provided liability coverage at a $1,000,000 occurrence limit for 
bodily injury (BI), property damage (PD) and personal/advertising injury (PI, AI) and the $3,000,000 
general aggregate since October 2012.  However, we do not use ISO forms, but rather AAIS forms.  This 
AAIS General Liability Form is GL 200 and is used by many companies.  It tracks closely with ISO’s 
form.   There is no deductible applicable to General Liability Coverage and defense costs do not reduce the 
coverage limits for BI, PD, PI and AI.   
 
c. Pastoral Professional Liability – We have provided Pastoral Counseling Liability at $1,000,000 from 
October 2012 to present for your church. The policy is occurrence based, not claims made.  A deductible 
does not apply to this coverage and defense costs do not reduce the coverage limit.    
 
d. Sexual Misconduct and Molestation Liability (SMM) – We provided Sexual Misconduct/Molestation 
coverage at a limit of $300,000 from October 2012 until October 2022. Coverage was decreased to 
$50,000 in October 2022. Our policy is occurrence based, not claims made. We have no way of offering 
‘claims made’ coverage.    
 
e. Additional Insureds and Policy Notices – We would be able to add the SC Conference as an additional 
insured under the policy, but not as and additional named insured.   An additional named insured receives 
the full benefits of the policy, which would present many unknowns to an insurance company.   As an 
additional insured, we would cover the SC Conference if they were sued due to the activities of the 
church.    The insurance is primary but, in the event of a claim involving both policies, policy language 
would dictate who pays and in what amounts.    
  
Any information contained in this summary does not alter/change coverage under the policies.
