In 1925, to celebrate the 100th 
Anniversary and to “care for the 
young…of the church,” the 
congregation built the Education 
Building and remodeled the exterior of 
the sanctuary to be architecturally 
compatible with the new building.  
James C. Hemphill was the architect.  
The bishop dedicated it in 1944.  In 
1993, Jane Greene and her children 
gave the congregation the Greene 
Center to honor her parents Nora and 
Leman Greene.  The bishop preached 
the sermon to celebrate the church’s 
175th Anniversary in 2002. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
As the banner on the wall of the 
narthex attests, Main Street considers 
itself a liturgical church, observing the 
Christian year in worship through 
music, drama, and sometimes dance.

disciples of Jesus Christ, supporting 
each other, serving the community, and

   Main Street United Methodist 
Church enjoys a rich, inspirational 
past. Its members resolve to build 
God’s kingdom on this foundation

making disciples, supporting each 
other, serving the community, and 
spreading the Good News of 
Salvation.

Her husband, James Moore, became the 
church’s first “local” preacher—he 
married, baptized, and buried people, 
and preached when the circuit rider was 
not present.  
The nave of the present sanctuary 
originally faced the northeast wall.  The 
front door was where the Good Shepherd 
window is, and the window on the 
northeast wall was over the front door.  
When the railroad came through 
Abbeville, and the railroad shops were 
built on the outskirts of town, the 
population increased by 1,000.  The 
Methodists invited the newcomers to join, 
and, as a result, the nave had to be 
enlarged.  It was re-oriented and what 
then became the back wall was moved.  
The bishop dedicated the remodeled 
church in 1895.  The architects were 
Bruce and Morgan of Atlanta, also the 
architects for the exuberant Queen Anne 
Harris House at 200 South Main and 
Tillman Hall at Clemson. 
 
 
 
 Of the art nouveau Good Shepherd 
window that was installed in 1895, The 
Southern Christian Advocate said it was 
“a beautiful work of art not 
surpassed…in the South.”  
 
 
 
 
The “ruby cut-through clear glass” over 
the door between the narthex and nave 
also dates from 1895.  The other 
windows in the nave, the windows in the 
DuPré Chapel, and the glass over the 
other doors are thought to have been 
installed in 1888.  
 
       
 
In 2018, a campaign to replace and restore 
the organ resulted in a new 649 pipe organ 
custom built by Kegg Pipe Organ Co.  The 
façade pipes of the 1900 Felgemaker pipe 
organ were restored and the console and 
other pipes were replaced.  The new organ 
was dedicated during the February 17, 2019 
worship service; District Superintendent 
Rev. Steve Patterson led the congregation 
in a pipe organ dedication Litany. 
       “We dedicate the pipe organ for the 
worship, honor, praise and glory of God. 
May this organ encourage our praise and lift 
our singing. May the music it produces bring 
our prayers to you in times of joy and times 
of sorrow.” 
 
History of Main Street UMC 
The present sanctuary of Main Street 
United Methodist Church was 
dedicated in 1888 by the bishop.  The 
architect and builder was James D. 
McCullough.  Not long after, in 1890, 
the bell now in the bell tower was 
purchased.  That church was the first 
church on this lot (1840), but it was 
Abbeville’s second Methodist church; 
the first one was built in 1827 on 
Washington Street and was the first 
church in the village—then known as 
Abbeville Court House. The founder of 
Methodism in Abbeville was a woman, 
Ann Fisher Moore.   
Ann Moore came to Abbeville as a 
young wife and wanted very much to 
have a church in the town where she 
would raise her children. Born in 
England and raised in Charleston, she 
was Roman Catholic, but after reading 
a Charles Wesley hymn, she 
converted to Methodism.

PARCEL 1.  
 
Being the same parcel, lot or tract conveyed by Deed dated April 26, 2012, and recorded in Volume 
51, Page 2028 by Barry Eugene Hawkins, unto Mesopotamia Methodist Church, its successors 
and assigns, to-wit: 
 
ALL that certain piece, parcel or lot of land lying and being situate in the State of S.C., County of 
Cherokee, 13 miles Southeast of Gaffney, containing 0.584 acre as shown on plat prepared for 
Mesopotamia Methodist Church, by Mike W. Byars, P.L.S. dated March 14, 2012 and recorded in 
the office of the Clerk of Court for Cherokee County, S.C. in Deed Book 51 at Page 2027 with 
reference to said plat being given for a full and complete description thereof.  
 
This being a portion of the property conveyed to Barry Eugene Hawkins by Deed of Elizabeth Ann 
Pridmore Hawkins dated May 5, 2004 and recorded in the office of the Clerk of Court for Cherokee 
County, S.C. in Deed Book 181, at Page 224

The beginning corner a black gum standing north 12° .45 3 chains and sixty four links from a small 
hole near a rock on the edge of the Church road near the church. Beginning at said gum running S 
12 ¾  E 2.50 in Church road thence west 4.00 thence south 2.70 thence east 4.61 in Church road. 
Thence south 12 ¾ ° E 2.34 on west side of church road thence east 00.75 on west side of Howells 
Ferry and Union Road thence N 27 ¾ ° E. 8.00 thence N. 86 ¾ west 6.17 to black gum the 
beginning corner. Supposed to contain three and three fourth acres.

Being the same parcel, lot or tract conveyed by Deed dated April 15, 1965, and recorded in Book 
6B, Page 328 by E.J. Pridmore of the County of Cherokee, to Randolph Lee, J.H. Whitworth and 
A.L. Poole, as Trustees of Mesopotamia Methodist Church, of Cherokee County, South Carolina, 
to-wit: 
 
All that certain piece, parcel or lot of land lying, being and situate in Gowdeysville Township, 
County of Cherokee, State of South Carolina, on the west side of the old Church Road, about 16 
miles Southeast of Gafney, being in the shape of the letter U and on the North, East and South 
sides of the present Mesopotamia Methodist Church Cemetery, and having according to a plat of 
survey made by J. V. Phillips, Jr., S.C. registered surveyor, dated March 20, 1965, the following 
metes and bounds, to wit: BEGINNING at the corner of the present Cemetery lot on the old Church 
Road, and running thence with the present Cemetery lot, N. 88-10. W. 264 feet; S. 1-55. __. 178 
feet to iron pin; thence __ 86-10 E. 304 feet to point in old Church Road; thence with new lines, 
S. 10-55 E. 36 feet to new corner; thence with new line of E.J. Pridmore, N. 88-10 W. 337.5 feet 
to iron pin, new corner; thence with another line of. E.J. Pridmore, N 1-55, E 222 feet to iron pin, 
new corner; thence with another line of E.J. Pridmore, S. 87-55 E. 276.25 feet to new corner; 
thence S. 55-30 E. 15 feet to beginning corner, and containing forty-two hundredths (0.42) of an 
acre, more or less.  
 
This being a portion of the property conveyed by M. G. Pridmore to E. J. Pridmore by deed dated 
August 20, 1955, and recorded in the office of the Clerk of Court for Cherokee County, S.C., in 
Deed Book Vol. 4-B at page 131. (Legal not verified by Preparer.)

consideration of the sum of thirty five dollars, to me in had paid at and before the sealing of these presents 
by the Trustees of the Mesopotamia (Methodist) Church (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged), 
have granted, bargained, sold and released, and by the presents do grant, bargain, sell and release unto the 
said trustees: 
J. L. WALKER,   T.A.GOFORTH  J.H. SPROUSE   AND   W. C. KIRBY, 
As trustees and their successors for the said Mesopotamia Methodist Church a certain lot of land in which 
the church now stands.
