Caving for Terrestrial Ecology

The week prior to going spelunking we 
learned how different and delicate the 
ecosystem in a cave is. Many animals 
that live in caves do not have melanin, 
because caves are such dark 
environments. We were able to see this 
and relate it back to the scientific paper 
we read when we saw an albino 
crayfish. The albino crayfish had much 
longer antennas than crayfish we would 
see in the river because the cave is 
completely dark, so it needed to sense 
the environment without being able to 
see. Interestingly, we read that it can 
still use melanization to heal wounds 
despite being albino! This also related 
back to our class discussions on 
adaptions and evolution and how 
species fill specific roles in the 
environment (the ecological niche!). At 
the end of our four-mile hike we were all 
muddy, wet, and exhausted but this 
experience is not one that we could have 
ever had in the classroom. 
On Sunday, February 25, Dr. 
Bradham’s Terrestrial Ecology class 
went to Worley’s Cave in Elizabethton, 
TN. This experience was one of a kind! 
Thirteen of us hiked through the cave 
for about three hours. We saw bats, 
albino crayfish, and salamanders. This 
cave was full of history. A long time 
ago this cave was used for salt mining, 
so we were able to see spots where they 
had previously mined. This cave also 
has the largest flowstone (also known 
as a curtain) east of the Mississippi! 
Exploring this cave allowed us to 
understand how natural and beautiful 
caves are. No changes have been made 
to this cave since the mouth of it was 
blown out for the salt mining. No water 
or food is allowed in, so the only water 
we had for the three hours was the 
water dripping into the cave. We 
climbed up to different levels of the 
cave, crawled and rolled through very 
small spaces, walked through rivers, 
and slid down many different rocks. 
Dr. Bradham’s ENVS338 Terrestrial Ecology class spent the day crawling and rolling 
through small spaces and different levels of Worley’s Cave in Tennessee.

American University – Environmental & Energy Law Program  
American University’s Washington College of Law 
(WCL) offers Juris Doctor and graduate admissions.  
Various JD degrees, domestic and international, are 
offered in international affairs, business, public 
administration, and public policy, along with their 
Master of Law degree (LLM) or Doctor of Juridical 
Science degree (SJD).  US New & World Report 
includes Washington College of Law as one of the 
top ten international law programs in the country. 
Their Environmental & Energy Law Program was 
established in 1990 and continues to grow.  In the 
Program on International and Comparative 
Environmental Law, WCL students are integrated 
with lawyers and practitioners in the field to focus 
on learning opportunities in client-based research 
and expanded support for student research 
projects.  Students also benefit from the program’s 
internships and externships since there are many 
participating environmental institutions and 
agencies in the Washington, DC area.

January 15, 2023 
Meeting called to order at 12:40 pm by Randy Strong

Church members meet immediately following worship services.  
Purpose of meeting was to inform Suttons UMC that we are currently in 
a discernment period as outlined in the Local Church Discernment 
Process of the South Carolina Conference.  The Checklist for Closure 
and Separation was distributed. SUMC Trustees have contacted a 
licensed appraiser, Julian Graham, who is scheduled to conduct a “Full 
Appraisal Report” the week of January 23, 2023, on Church and 
Parsonage property.  Terry Fleming, District Superintendent, will be at 
Suttons UMC on February 5, 2023, immediately following worship 
services to witness the final vote of church members.  Those present 
were encouraged to spread the word to other members to ensure their 
attendance at this important meeting. As of January 1, 2023, Suttons 
UMC has total liquid assets of $79,688.21 (which includes general 
account, Methodist men, Methodist women, building fund, cemetery 
fund, youth fund, parsonage fund, and organ fund CD).  As per 
checklist, a 10% “Tithe” would be due to the conference which would 
total $7,968.82.

A meeting was called immediately following worship services.  Purpose 
of meeting was to inform Suttons UMC that as outlined in the Checklist 
for Closure and Separation the church will be required to have full 
appraisal report performed by a provider of commercial value 
assessments or appraisals licensed by the South Carolina Real Estate 
Appraisers Board and subject to the Uniform Standards of Professional 
Appraisal Practice prior to the February 5, 2023, Church Conference. 
Trustees have scheduled this for the week of January 23 and ask that a 
motion be made to assign funds to pay for such appraisal, as this is not 
a budgeted item.  Dale Byrdic made the motion to accept the appraiser 
recommended by the Trustees and to pay the fee from the Building 
Fund, which is estimated to be around $1,000.00.  All voting members 
present agreed.  Motion passed.

Minutes from the January 22, 2023, Church Council meeting was 
distributed.  Motion to accept minutes was made by Roy Piatt and 
seconded by John Smiley, all present was in favor of acceptance of 
minutes. 
Randy explained the purpose of meeting was to present financial 
information to congregation regarding potential separation from the 
United Methodist Conference.  Suttons Church property has been 
appraised by Julian Graham with the value of $48,000.00 being 
submitted (this is for Church building and grounds).  
Separation Costs breakdown: 
10% of appraised property   $4,800.00 
10% of liquid assets    $7,537.97 
18 months of apportionments prior   $1,890.90 
12 months of apportionments after $3,780.00 
Unfunded pension liability   $   414.32 
Clergy salary until closure   $7,075.00 
Unpaid direct bill    $3,678.00 
Total       $29,175.79 
Randy reminded all present that calculations were estimates. 
Estimated Suttons portion of parsonage appraisal could be $5,208.33, 
which is not included in the above amounts. 
Motion was made to enlist the services of Patsy Williamson regarding 
title search.  All in favor.  Dale Byrdic agreed to contact her to have this 
within the time frame necessary. 
Motion was made to contact law firm NCLL to assist in the disaffiliation 
process.  All in favor to hire law firm NCLL.  Randy Strong agreed to 
make initial contact. 
Motion was made to nominate Roy Piatt and John Smiley as the Trustee 
representatives for Suttons Church.  Therefore, the United Methodist 
Conference will only have contact with these two individuals with any 
additional questions.  All in favor.

Meeting opened with prayer 
Minutes from the February 1, 2023, Church Council meeting was 
distributed.  Motion to accept minutes was made by Roy Piatt and 
seconded by Dale Byrdic, all present was in favor of acceptance of 
minutes. 
Trustees: 
Church sign still same status and we will need to rewire. Name on sign 
will also have to be updated due to withdrawal and name change of 
church. New LED lights are installed.  Motion made to move forward 
with the getting wiring complete for sign. 
Handicap Ramp- Nesmith Construction has submitted bid for 
replacement of fellowship hall entrance ramp to resemble the front 
ramp entrance.  Discussion regarding getting another bid from Marty 
Morris.  Roy spoke with Harry Walters (Booty) about Andrews Metal 
Works possibly doing the railings for the new ramp and received 
positive response.   
Playground Equipment- Repairs need to be made to old equipment. 
Harris Pest Control- Update budget item for “Harris Pest Control” to 
$1000.00 to cover cost of booster termite treatment done every 10 
years.  Randy Strong made said motion, Dale Byrdic seconded and all 
present agreed. 
Finance: 
Quarterly Financial Report distributed.   
Discussion regarding the additional cost of disaffiliation from United 
Methodist Conference.  Donna Piatt made a motion to increase 
emergency discretionary budget line item from $700.00 to $1,700.00 
and all additional cost of disaffiliation be taken from this.  
Cemetery Committee: 
New Funeral Policy was distributed to those present.  Explained that 
this policy would be mailed out to all funeral homes.  Discussion made 
to include “cremation” to policy and then distribute to funeral homes. 
Discussion made of cemetery needing to be plotted. 
Church Council: 
Discussion made regarding when the “new” name of the church would 
need to be decided following disaffiliation from “United Methodist 
Conference” this name will be on the deed, LLC, 501C3, and federal 
employee identification number. Those present agreed to have a 
meeting immediately after a church service, in hopes to having more 
members present, to submit nominations of suggested “new” church 
name to adopt after disaffiliation. 
Discussion regarding important dates throughout Lenten season.

Randy Strong explained the purpose of the meeting was to come 
forward with a formal “new” name of the church following disaffiliation 
from United Methodist Conference. 
John Smiley made a motion to adopt “Suttons Methodist Church” 
Jennifer Strong made a motion to adopt “Suttons Church” 
A vote was taken from members present and Suttons Methodist Church 
received 8 votes and Suttons Church received 7 votes. 
Suttons Methodist Church passed as the adopted name to be used 
following our disaffiliation. 
Jennifer Strong will send this name forward to National Center for Life 
and Liberty (NCLL) in order to begin the process of updating deeds, 
FEIN, Incorporation, etc.
