History of Tabor Methodist 
Church
Welcome to Tabor—Homecoming 2023
• Homecoming is always the last Sunday in April every year.
• This is a special homecoming—it coincides with “5th” Sunday 
for the Ruffin Charge and it is Tabor’s turn to host the 
service.   
• Welcome to our church family members who normally 
attend St. John and Bethel!  We certainly hope you will stay 
after the service and join us in the Fellowship Hall for some 
great food.
RECENT HISTORY—March 2020 the whole 
world changed due to COVID-19
• We, as a church, had to learn to worship from a distance 
without being inside our beautiful house of worship.
• In person services, celebrations, bible studies - all were 
canceled.  We learned to worship virtually over the internet 
at home or in our cars outside the church for social 
distancing.  
• Tabor’s annual Homecoming event had been on hold since 
that date.  Tabor welcomed back homecoming in April 2022.
• Let’s take a quick look back at our beloved church…
How it all Started…
• Mrs. J.W. Beverly (better known as Miss Bernice), Tabor’s Historian, 
spent many hours in contact with older members of the congregation 
and in the Colleton County Clerk of Court Records room at the 
courthouse to retrieve the initial history of Tabor Methodist Church.  
• John and Mary Ann Coone donated 2.0 acres of land where Tabor 
Church sits on June 2. 1840. 
4 Buildings have Erected on this Spot…
• 1st building was built of logs with a dirt floor.
• 2nd building was also built with logs, but HAD a 
floor!  Both of the log buildings were erected by 
John Crosby, Gideon Smith, Maten Robinson and 
Henry Bowers.
• 3rd building was a framed building contracted by 
Jim Carroll.   The pulpit and the altar were hand-
made for the sanctuary. This building was torn 
down and replaced with the current building.
• 4th building (current building) was erected in 
1942. Construction supervised by T.M. Smith
Expansions and Renovations…
• 1957 – Under leadership of Rev. George Cooper, the addition of the fellowship 
hall and education rooms, kitchen, and restrooms was begun. The funds were 
raised by donation from the Tabor Women’s Society, church socials, donations 
from church members, and barbecues. Expansion was completed and presented 
to Rev.  R.B. Tyler for dedication by Building committee member, Jack W. Beverly, 
Sr. (committee also included Harold Berry and Swinton Hudson) on May 7, 1961.
• Summer 1973 – Sanctuary was completely redone to what you see now.
• Spring 1982 – Exterior (front of the church) was redone and steeple was added. 
• 1992 – Ramp was added, back porch extended and steps redone.
• Summer/Fall 2022—Termites reeked havoc on our church. Fortunately, repairs 
were able to be done.  Electrical upgrades, new lighting, and new support beams 
were also done in the Fellowship Hall during the time that our church was 
shutdown for termite repair.
Of Note…
• Tabor Women’s Society was organized on December 11, 1951.
• Tabor Church is proud to have produced 2 preachers for the South Carolina 
Conference--
• Rev. Clifton E. Jones
• Rev. Lee Phillips (Son of former charge pastor, Jerry Phillips).  We claim Lee 
as he married our own Vicki Ulmer, daughter of Marshall and Patsy Ulmer.
• Total of 50 preachers have been assigned to our pulpit (and charge)
• Carolyn Malphrus was the first woman preacher assigned to Tabor (and 
Ruffin Charge in 1995)
• 1997 – Church acquired 2 acres of land adjacent to the cemetery from the 
estate of C.B. Crosby.
• TODAY - By God’s grace Tabor is still standing and we continue to praise 
God for our many blessings which includes all of you.  Thank you for joining 
us for Homecoming 2022!
