Eager to open doors for Wofford students
Chandler Compton ’20 is Wofford College’s first Schwarzman Scholar.
When Chandler Compton ’20 left his family farm in Cedar Grove, North Carolina — a farm
that his family has worked for centuries — he had never heard of the Schwarzman or
Fulbright Scholars programs. He had never considered military service, and he could barely
conceive traveling to Spartanburg for college much less throughout Asia.
What a difference a decade and a Wofford College education makes.
On Jan. 15 Schwarzman Scholars announced its 10th cohort, and Compton was selected to
the Schwarzman Class of 2025-26. He will attend a one-year, fully funded master’s degree
program in global affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Responding to generosity
Wofford College is committing to covering direct cost for up to 10 Meeting Street Scholars each year.
Philanthropists Susu and George Dean Johnson Jr., Wofford Class of 1964, made a $40
million gift in the fall to bring the power of the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund to
Spartanburg. Now, Wofford College has pledged to further close the funding gap for high-
achieving, under-resourced students.
“Inspired by the transformative gift from the Johnsons, Wofford College will commit to
meeting direct need — tuition, fees, housing and food — for up to 10 Meeting Street Scholars
each year,” says Dr. Nayef Samhat, the college’s 11th president.
Currently, the Meeting Street Scholarship is an annual award of up to $10,000 to students
who graduate from public high schools in the counties of Allendale, Barnwell, Charleston,
Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Jasper, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Williamsburg and
now Spartanburg thanks to the gift from the Johnsons. High school seniors and students
currently enrolled in college from these counties can apply for the scholarship for the 2025-26
academic year at meetingstreetscholarshipfund.org.

The power of brotherhood
SAE brothers presented a donation to Wofford College in memory of Camp Arnett ’13.
When Camp Arnett ’13 died unexpectedly on June 26, 2024, his Sigma Alpha Epsilon
fraternity brothers were stunned. Some had just attended Arnett’s wedding. Others had
recently exchanged texts.
On Jan. 18, a group of 60 SAEs from the 2010-13 classes met on campus to honor his
memory: sharing stories, attending a basketball game to honor his love of sports and making
a donation to the college that will be recognized with the naming of a tree in the college’s
arboretum. Matt Abee ’10, Blair Reath ’10 and William Render ’10 led the effort.
“Since Wofford is the place that brought us all together, our fraternity strongly felt that
dedicating a tree on our college’s beautiful campus would be a fitting way to celebrate the life
of our brother Camp,” says Reath.
Arnett was the commissary manager for the Copper Cellar Corporation in Knoxville, Tenn., at
the time of his death.
“It was a great weekend celebrating an even better friend,” says Render. “The world needs
more people like Camp Arnett.”
Lending a hand

Gabriel Tawiah ’25, an economics and sociology and anthropology major from Ghana, used
his winter break to give back to Western North Carolina, which was heavily affected by
Hurricane Helene.
“I had a block of five days open between a Christmas break trip to New York and the start of
Interim, so the service opportunity came at the perfect time,” says Tawiah. “The Sullivan
Foundation provided us lodging in the Lake Junaluska area so that we could spend less time
commuting and more time serving.”
The organizations Tawiah partnered with were Blunt Pretzels, a Bavarian pretzel shop in
Swannanoa that has regularly given free meals to the community; Equal Plates Project, an
organization that purchases produce from small farms to use in meals for those in need; and
Grassroots AID Partnership, a group that provides aid to vulnerable communities in crisis.
