THE HISTORY OF TRANQUil., METHODIST CHURCH 
ESTABLISHED 1832 
This summary of the history of the Tranquil United Methodist Church includes many interesting facts 
which are authenticated by written records and data which have been handed down orally over the years. 
The follo'\\'ing history is taken from facts collected and recorded by Mark Collins, Mrs. A. Harvey Collins 
and Ms. Lillian R. Watson. Church records, which have proven to be incomplete, have been used to verify 
as many of these details as possible. 
In 1832, the Tranquil United Methodist Church was established in Mullins, a mile east of the present 
edifice. The original church was an austere structure, used for 26 years, with hewed seats, board roofing 
and walls made of logs and boards daubed "'ith clay. 
In 1858, Mr. John Collins, patriarch of the Collins families of the church, donated land for the :first 
church to be built at the present location. It is situated where the cemetery is now located. The lumber 
was sawed with cross cut saws down on the Little Pee Dee River and hauled to the site on a cart pulled by 
two oxen. It was constructed of all rough lumber and compacted primarily with clay. 
The first preacher was the Reverend Lewis Scarborough, a circuit rider, who traveled on horseback with 
his Bible and hymnal in his saddlebags. He preached once a month at seven churches - Little River, 
Mullins, Zion, Tranquil, Bennettsville and Dothan in Dillon County. Since there was no parsonage, he 
spent his time in the homes of the members of each church. 
During the next :fifty years, very little improvement was made on the building, but in 1903 Mr. Noah 
Strickland, a Baptist, contributed, sawed and hauled the logs to build the present Church. Mr. Mark and 
Mrs. Lillie Collins gave one and one-half acres of additional property on which to build. Mr. Bradley 
Nicholson served as foreman and the members did the work. The pulpit, table and seats were purchased 
from Macedonia Church in Mullins. During this time the following ministers served: The Reverends 
Beacham Dukes, Murray McLendon, Ed CaldweIL T. C. Easterling, Major M. Byrd, Ed Cook, William 
Perry and H.W. Shealy. 
By 1928, the church had lost many of its members and practically all of its attendance to a Church in 
Mullins, where there was a "wide awake" evangelistic minister. Only Mr. Till Altman, Mr. West Jones, 
Mr. and Mrs. Percy Bryant and family and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Collins and family remained. There was 
no church school but Mrs. A. Harvey Collins felt that if there were children for a public school, there 
should also be some for a church school She ordered literature and canvassed the community, and in two 
weeks there were fifty-five enrolled in Church School. 
Reverend Major M. B)Td was returned to the church for the second time in a year, and in 1930 a piano 
was bought to replace the old pump organ. The Reverend Carlisle Smith, along with his ll-ife Nancy, came 
in 1932 and the church gained a renewed spirit. The first Women's Missionary Society was organized 
that year. Then the Reverends John L. Sandlin, T .E. Jones and Tom Shuler piloted the members through 
the other Depression years. 
In 1938, Tranquil was placed on the Nichols Charge and the Marion Charge was discontinued. The 
Reverend C.S. Felder was the first minister after the church had been placed on the Nichols Charge. In 
1939, Unification caused the church to lose a few members, but by this time the church membership was 
able to be independent. The Reverend L.D.B. Williams was immeasurable help providing repairs and 
upkeep for the Church. He wired it for electricity, built brick steps and helped paint the interior and the 
e:i..1:enor. 
The Reverend C.E. Hill came in 1945. During his four years ofleadership membership increased and 
five church schoolrooms were added. The Reverend Jesse G. Ferguson came in 1949 and an organ was 
purchased for the sanctuary. In 1951, the Reverend E. King Scoggins, the first five-year minister, came. 
During his ministry gas heat was installed and the sanctuary was remodeled. He donated a new floor and 
a new porch was poured. The Reverend Tommy G. Gibbons came in 1956 to live in the new parsonage 
for one year. There was no noticeable construction during that year but half of the parsonage debt was 
paid and much spiritual work was accomplished. In 1957 the Reverend W. Harvey Floyd, Jr. came. He 
began encouraging donations and tithing and in his first year Tranquil 's portion of the parsonage debt was 
paid. Restrooms were added, with fixtures given by Mr. Robert Rogers, a brother of Mr. Jennings and Mr. 
Herbert Rogers, Mrs. Beaufort Jackson and Mrs. Paul Causey, members of the church at that time. 
Reverend and Mrs. Bobby Wesley donated the worship picture now located above the front entrance. 
Reverend Eugene Holmes came to Tranquil in 1960. He was a very formal minister and be taught the 
congregation much about the ritual and formalities of the Methodist Church. He raised the standard of 
worship so that it was in keeping with the larger churches and a new organ and piano were purchased. 
In 1964 Tranquil was taken off the Nichols charge and placed in a two-point charge. The Tranquil-
Center charge was formed and the Reverend Donald Britt, a Marion native who was a student at Duke 
Divinity School, was the first minister of the new charge. He drove from Duke each weekend for a year 
and gave services in the Tranquil-Center churches. Rev. Donald Britt was a man who appreciated beauty 
and during his ministry the Tranquil Methodist Women, Tranquil Homemaker's Club and the Tranquil 
4-H Club worked together to landscape the church property. 
Reverend Robert Page followed Rev. Britt in 1965 and served eleven years, the longest of any of 
Tranquil's ministers. During his ministry in 1967, the church was remodeled. Mr. Hoyt Collins donated 
enough land to complete the additions. Members decided to remove the old church schoolrooms, remodel 
the sanctuary and then build a social hall, a kitchen, four classrooms and two restrooms. In addition, it 
was decided to brick the sanctuary. Central heating and air conditioning were installed. In 1970, during 
Rev. Page's ministry, Tranquil was again put on a four point charge. Attendance increased and finances 
improved. He was shared with the Centenary-Central charge and preached at Tranquil on alternating 
Sundays. 
Rev. Page remained at Tranquil and lived in Aynor, South Carolina where he was a mail carrier and 
commuted to Mullins. This suited him and church members because at that time there was no parsonage. 
When he had to take on the two extra churches, Central and Centenary, the work became too much for 
him and he resigned in 1975. A steeple was added to the structure tin 1975 and in 1976 a parsonage was 
purchased and furnished. 
In 1972 the 1785 and 1866 Methodist annual conferences, both named "The South Carolina 
Conference", merged to form "The South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church" and 
Tranquil became a member automatically. Members of Tranquil and others were committed to making 
the merger work. 
Many memorials have been given to the church to honor deceased members and many gifts have been 
given for their usefulness in worship senices. One outstanding gift, mentioned for its enhancement to the 
church and grounds, was the church sign given in memory of Mr. Jennings Rogers by his wife and 
children in 1975. 
In June 1976 Rev. Larry Wilson, his wife Patricia, and son Dwayne came to Tranquil. They were the 
first family to reside in the new parsonage. Rev. Charles Polk was the District Superintendent of the 
Marion District. One of the first things Rev. Wilson ·was asked to do was to update the membership roll. 
With the help of Mrs. Ruby Collins, many local and long distance telephone calls were made, many letters 
were \\'Titten and much time was spent in trying to get in touch with every member on the roll. This effort 
reduced the membership from 149 to 121. This reduced our Benevolence asking from the C.onference and 
brought a substantial savings to the church. 
Rev. Wilson taught two Bible Studies; one on Acts and one on Revelation. These were interesting and 
instructional and similar studies have been continued by the ministers who have followed. Tranquil 
continued to grow spiritually and materially under Rev. Wilson. On March 19, 1978, only eighteen 
months after the parsonage was purchased for $27,500 (and an office was built for $2000 by the men in 
the church under the direction of Mr. Helbert Rogers), the mortgage was burned and the parsonage and 
office were dedicated. Those participating in the burning of the mortgage were Rev. William R Kinnet, 
District Superintendent; Rev. Larry Wilson, pastor; Mrs. Patricia Wilson, pastor's wife; Mr. Ronnie 
Taylor, chairman of the Building Fund Committee; Mrs. Janette Rogers, Church Treasurer; Mrs. Ruby 
Collins, Lay Delegate and Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee; Mr. Johnny Lett, 
Chairman of the Administrative Board; Mr. L.S. Ammons, Church School Superintendent and Mr. Robert 
Hayes, Trustee. 
Rev. Wilson was moved after two years at Tranquil to a better paying appointment with only one 
church. He did not ask to be moved but his health was failing and a single charge seemed a better choice. 
On December 17, 1981, hearts were saddened when his body succumbed to cancer. He was a native of 
Missouri and was buried in Chester, South Carolina, Patricia's hometown. 
In June 1978 a vivacious young minister, Rev. David Arant, came from Emory Theological Seminary to 
live as a bachelor in our parsonage but not for long. In September, he brought his new wife, Nancy 
McCracken Arant, in to share his home, his life and his work. David was a leader and a hard worker, 
always on top of things and changes. He was good for the church members, keeping them alert, interested 
and active. He continued Bible Study, teaching St. Mark, and by request, Revelation. David stayed only 
two years but received a class of seven members by faith and three by transfer from Baptist churches. 
Everyone hated to see him go. Nancy, who had been trained in Library Science, wanted to use her training 
ability, so they asked for a transfer where she could find employment. They moved to Arcadia, South 
Carolina and Nancy found work at Spartanburg Methodist College. 
In June 1980, Tranquil was once again a pioneer church in this area, being the first to accept a female 
pastor, Rev. Elizabeth (Beth) Collier. There were mixed emotions about this with a few of the members 
refusing to accept her. Rev. Collier was a forceful preacher and was asked to preach at the Communion 
Service at the South Carolina Annual Conference. She continued Bible Study, taught a course on Bible 
Miracles and one on Methodist Beliefs and Worship in the United Methodist Church. On a particular 
Good Friday, there was another first in the church when Rev. Collier prepared and seived a "Paschal 
Supper" with a planned program. This was very impressive. She also started Wednesday night prayer 
services. She left after two years, getting a leave of absence from the regular pastorate, to work as 
Chaplain at the Mental Health Center in Florence, South Carolina and to fill pulpits in the absence of 
regular pastors. 
In 1982 another special team, of which there were only ten in the South Carolina Conference, came to 
Tranquil. A husband and wife team of ministers, Rev. Scott and Rev. Nellie Cloninger. They brought 
with them a new son, a few days old, John Scott ClQninger, Jr. Rev. Cloninger pastored Tranquil and 
Center Churches and Nellie was pastor to the Central and Centenary Churches. These were separate 
appointments. Scott and Nellie were not only good ministers but good singers as well, enriching many of 
our services with their duets. Like Rev. Collier, they attended and showed special interest in the United 
Methodist Women work. 
Scott organized a Men's Club and made it possible for his two churches to meet together. They worked 
well together and the fellowship was wonderful. The church profited by this club. One of Scott's strong 
points in his special services commemorating Jesus' birth at Christmas and commemorating His death 
and resurrection at Easter. These programs were special. Scott continued Wednesday night Bible Study 
and in 1984 he was asked to serve as minister for the pulpit for Spring Branch United Methodist Church. 
Spring Branch h_ad been officially on the Mullins Charge at that time and was added to the Tranquil-
~ 
Center Charge. 
In 1985, Rev. Kermit Shrawder from Pennsylvania joined the South Carolina Conference and was 
appointed to the charge. His wife, Mary Gould Sbriiwder, was a lay speaker and could fill in any time it 
was neces.sary. They had an adopted son, Lynn. Kermit and Mary promoted the music, Bible study, 
witnessing, the Men's Chlh and the United Methodist Women. Later they adopted a baby girl. Sara. 
Mary's brother David Gould, a member of the congregation, was rec:nrnmended t,y the quarterly 
conference to be a candidate for the ministiy and he is still serving in the South Carolina Conference. 
In 1988 Rev. Steve Luse was appointed to the Tranquil Charge. He and Marie had adopted children, 
Jennifer, a girl of Korean heritage, and Shawn. Steve attended and graduated with honors from Coastal 
Carolina College and entered Duke Seminary. On October 7, 1991 Steve resigned from the ministry. 
Rev. Levon Hucks came to Tranquil in 1991. He had asked for a leave of absence after his father's 
death to he]p his mother, and the¢ore, was available. The Cabinet, with Rev. Robert Howell, the District 
Superintendent, and with the Pastor Parish Committee's agreement, appointed Rev. Levon Hucks, pastor. 
Rev. Hucks with his wife, Darlene, two sons and two daughters began his ministry to the Tranquil, 
Spring Branch and Center ,Charge. Under his guidance, this Charge has offered numerous Bible Study 
courses. The three churches have often combined to have special services and offer programs that any one 
of the individual churches may not have been able to offer as a single church with limited members and 
resources. Under his leadership eight churches from three charges, called a cooperative parish, have 
combined forces to generate a monthly newsletter and offer some additional programs as a group. 
ln 1999 active and inactive members from Tranquil plus former members were asked if they would like 
to donate money for a new organ. Within six months, enough money had been raised to make the 
purchase. It is to be dedicated during the October 2000 Homecoming activities. 
The Spring Branch Church closed its doors in 2004 and the Charge became known as the Tranquil-
Center charge. In 2004 Dr. Levon Hucks left Tranquil Church and Rev. Deborah Taylor became the 
second female minister. In 2005 the United Methodist Conference decided to add Nichols. The Charge 
became known as the Nichols-Tranquil-Center Charge. Rev. Bill Heustess became minister in 2005. 
In 2006 Tranquil members began planning for renovation and updating of the church and its facilities. 
The roof was replaced in-2006, paid for by Roddy Elliott and Lori Johnson in honor of Jim and Jennie 
Elliott, their parents. The Charge was structured and Nichols was added Nichols had the larger 
parsonage: It was approved by the administrative council and the District Superintendent to sell the 
Tranquil parsonage. In the spring of 2007 the Tranquil parsonage was sold. 
Remodeling began in earnest in 2007 and included: 
* New ceiling installed in the Sanctuaiy 
* New replacement windows for the church 
* Paneling painted 
* Sanctuary painted 
* New Carpet 
* Refinished floors and new carpet added 
* Slio1iers placed at windows 
* French doors installed between sanctuary and fellowship hall 
* Fellowship hall painted 
* Brass can4elabras added to choir 
* New speakers installed. 
In 2009, Tranquil purchased a much needed storage building. It was placed on the west side of the 
church yard In 2010 the cbwch bought a beautiful lighted sign. This sign has been a great asset to the 
church as well as the community. Reoovations to the front of the church were made in 2011. These 
renovations iocluded: 
* Refurbishment of the front porch 
* New Columns 
* NewSteps 
* New banisters 
* New rails 
A new heat pump was installed in the Sanctuary in 2012. 
In June 2013 Rev. Eddie Collier came to us to serve the Center-Nichols-Tranquil Charge. Since then 
we have begun the process to separate the cemetety property from the church property to insure perpetual 
care status. The chain fence has beeJl.replaced and a new brickwork entrance has been buih. 
In 2017 Tranquil celebrat.ed 185 years since established and 164 years at the present location. Rev. 
Collier ~ the celebration but did not miss the flood waters of 2017 in which many church records 
were lost 
Rev. Collier left in June 2018 and Rev. Grady Corder, with a Pentecostal background, along with his 
• wife Barbara came to Tranquil. 
Under Rev. Corder's leadership and his wife Barbara's unlimited energy and enthusiasm, many 
changes have been made. Members have enjoyed a :full schedule of new and renewed events and activities. 
Again, there are enough children to have an active nursery during Sunday services. Playground equipment 
has been added for outdoor activities. Monthly fellowship supper.; have been restored along with programs 
that have definitely held the interest of those attendine the suppers. Bible studies have been taught by Rev. 
Corder and Vacation Bible school has been planned and led by Batbara and chmch members. 
A food program was initiated by Carl Claytor and has been a blessing to members and the needy in the 
community. 
Many gifts and donation$ have been given to Tranquil Church during this time. A stained gl3$ window 
was given by Joyce Lett, family and friends in memory of Mrs. Mamie Wt:st, Johnny Lett and Randy 
West A sound system was given in memory of Natalie Rogers by her family. A refrigerator was given 
anonymously. Other gifts of money,-attendaoce. support and a loving spirit have been given by members 
and non members. God's bles.gngs have been abundant. 
For all of our material accomplisbments during the years, -we are humbly grateful to God, the Lord Jesus 
Christ, but we are even more thankful for our spiritual growth, awakening and accomplishments.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF 
ANTIOCH METHODIST CHURCH 
The deeds of Amtioch Mehtodist Church Cemetary show ihrut two acres of land was 
deeded to the Methodist conference, May 2, 1883, by James T. Toed forever and ever as a 
public burying ground!. The first Antioch Church was built soon after on the two acre plat. 
So far as I know his first wife was the first one to be buried there. 
The Epitaph on: iher Monument reads: 
Remember Friends as you pass by 
As you are now, so once was I 
As I am Now You soon will be 
Prepare to die and follow Me. 
I don't know wfuo the first pastors were. 
In 1892 my Grandfather, The Rev. D. A. Calhoun was sent to the Conway Circuit 
which at that time oonsisted of five churches, namely Antiocfu, Brown Swamp, Cool 
Springs, Durant, and Poplar. He lived in the Parsonage on the comer of Laurel Street and 
Seventh Avenue, whleb is still there. It has been renovated some, ·,two or three times and 
now belongs to Browm. Swamp and Poplar . 
. , My Grandfath~r stayed on the Conway Circuit four years a.rad was then sent to the 
Waccamaw Circuit at IMurrells Inlet. The Post office at that time was Laurel. 
I joined Antioch. Church sixty nine years ago.this fall. In 192!0 the members decided 
to build a new Church, ·some wanted to move it t9 another location. finally in 1921 a decision 
was made and J. A. C alhoun, Sr. and A. B. Calhoun his younger- brother, then living in 
Augusta, Georgia deedled one acre of land whe_re Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church now 
stands. The deed was filed October 25, 1921. 
In 1955 it was de cided that we needed a new church or some expensive renovation, 
that is when the decisiion was made to bring Antioch back home. 
A. M. Calhou~ gli!,ve one acre of land and the church which nOllW stan'ds here was soon 
built. 
The present Antiioch Church was paid for in full and was dedicated June 10, 1956. The 
Rev. A. F. Regan preached the Dedication Sermon.
