learned all about the logging industry, 
and how environmentalists go to great 
ends to protect the forests from excess 
cutting. We were guided around the 
forests of Tasmania by Miranda 
Gibson, a woman who lived in a tree 
in one of the forests in Tasmania for 
two years because she was so 
dedicated to preventing logging.  
Another highlight was interning on 
the biodynamic farm for five weeks at 
the Shearwater Steiner School in 
Mullumbimby, New South Wales, for 
part of my final project.  The school 
follows Rudolf Steiner’s philosophies, 
so it places an emphasis on art, 
creativity, and spirituality.  During my 
internship, I helped out on the organic 
farm that was on the school’s 
property, and I also helped teach 
environmental classes at the school to 
high school aged students. 
Last semester I spent four months in 
Australia, mostly in the state of New 
South Wales. My study abroad 
program’s focus was on Sustainability 
and Environmental Action.  There were 
nineteen other students from all over 
the United States, coming from various 
universities, backgrounds, and majors.  
All twenty of us were completely 
different people, yet were tied together 
by our passion for protecting and 
taking care of the earth.

were when we visited Tasmania, one of 
the most gorgeous places I have ever

Clemson University –Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences 
 
 
 
 
     Clemson’s graduate program in Environmental 
Engineering and Earth Sciences (EEES) offers three 
programs in Environmental Engineering & Science, 
Biosystems Engineering, and Hydrogeology.   
     All three programs offer a MS degree. A MEng 
degree is also offered in Environmental Engineering 
& Science, and a PhD degree can be earned in 
Environmental Engineering & Science, or 
Biosystems Engineering. 
     The school’s website states, “We recognize that 
today’s students need to balance a scientific 
understanding of natural systems and processes with 
the ability to realistically evaluate and design for 
the role of people in these systems.  Clemson 
meets this challenge by offering students the 
opportunity to integrate scientific and engineering 
perspectives through our diverse range of MS, 
MEng, and PhD programs.” 
    The program is consistently ranked in the top 25 
by US News and World Report and today has more

same in exports almost overnight. With 
the US embargo, Cuba’s main trading 
partner had long been Soviet bloc 
countries. With very limited access to 
petrochemicals and a population facing 
famine, more people had to farm on 
whatever land was available and were 
doing so using organic methods. Today 
estimates say that about 90% of fresh 
produce—cassava, citrus, potatoes, 
garlic, herbs, corn, onions, lettuce—in 
Havana is grown on local urban farms.  
     As part of the conference, Dr. 
Telligman and I spent an afternoon on a 
fieldtrip to the Organopónico Viver Alamer, 
an organic farm just outside of the city. 
Here we toured the 25+ acre farm and 
got to see a variety of techniques they 
use, including oxen to plow and fertilize, 
earthworm troughs, a variety of plants 
grown together to create a confusing 
smell for bugs in a successful effort to 
deter them, and a vast expanse of crops. 
The system certainly is not perfect; 
Cubans still rely heavily on imports, 
there is countrywide debate over the food 
rationing system, and tourism, especially 
if doors open wide to Americans again, 
could change everything. Nonetheless, 
the work being done on organic farms in 
Cuba is exciting. 
     This year’s annual meeting for the 
Association for Humanist Sociology 
(AHS) was held in Havana, Cuba where 
Dr. Amy Telligman and I presented our 
paper, “Operationalizing Sustainability: 
Bringing Social Justice and Inequality to 
the Conversation,” in which we 
discussed social equity as a valuable 
dimension of sustainability.  
     Havana is a grid of grand boulevards 
and gritty streets, weather worn mid-
century architecture and faded colonial 
era buildings, everything a nod to the 
past. At sunset, the city turns pink and 
orange softening the worn edges. On the 
Malecón, a boulevard that runs along the 
sea, a hum of Cubans and tourists alike 
gather at dark, using the sea wall as a 
bench, a spot to let the briny air (and 
diesel exhaust) wash away the day, while 
1950s era cars speed by. 
     Cuba is a fascinating place 
geopolitically and has long been a source 
of curiosity for me. In terms of 
sustainability, Cuba gets frequent praise 
as having made great strides in urban 
organic farming. Cubans are quick to 
point out that this was in large part done 
out of necessity rather than on principle 
alone. After the fall of the USSR, Cuba 
lost 80% of its imports and nearly the

     The School of Earth, Ocean and Environment at 
the University of South Carolina offers five graduate 
degrees including the Master of Earth and 
Environmental Resource Management (MEERM) 
degree for graduate students interested in 
management positions in earth resources or 
environmental resources. 
    MEERM offers these graduate students the 
opportunity to create individualized programs based 
on their own interests and goals.

We revamped the website over the 
summer with the help of our friends 
in OMC and ITS. We analyzed 
website statistics and determined 
the most frequently used services. 
You’ll find those links on the left, 
including Ask A Librarian, ILL/
PASCAL and renewing your books 
online. On the right, you’ll see we’ve 
separated out services according to 
population: students, and faculty/
staff. Your section has the buttons 
for submitting course reserves 
requests, scheduling library instruction for your class, suggesting the 
purchase of library material and learning about copyright and fair use. We 
would love to hear your feedback on the site.
COURSE RESERVES
We love being able to offer course 
reserves to your students. It’s a 
major part of what happens in the 
daily life of the library. The service 
has become so popular that we 
reworked how we process your 
requests. We created an easy-to-
use form, which allows you tell to 
us who you are and what class the 
reserves are for. After you complete 
the form, simply copy/paste your 
list in the form. Because so many 
course reserve requests come in 
at the start of each semester, we ask for your patience as we work to 
make your reserves available to your students as soon as we can, typically 
within 24 to 48 hours, or a little longer during the busiest times.
Dear Wofford Faculty,
Much like you, we in the library have had a busy 
summer. When you visit the library, either in person or 
online, you will readily notice some changes. Among 
the most significant changes is our newly designed 
website, wofford.edu/library. Our goal is to make 
access to quality information resources easier for you, 
your students and other library users. We analyzed 
site statistics to ascertain the most frequently used 
tools and resources. In addition, we took note of what 
students, faculty and staff have asked about the most. 
We then provided clear avenues to what we believe our 
campus needs from the library’s website. We hope our 
improvements make information seeking easier and 
more successful for you and your students. As ever, we 
welcome your feedback.
In the library building, you will notice at least two new 
items. First, beginning in late September, we will be 
featuring an exhibition that marks the centennial of 
America’s entry into the Great War. “WWI: At Home 
and Abroad” will not only highlight some of the political, 
social and cultural realities of that period in the U.S., but 
it will also document Wofford College during the First 
World War. The exhibition will be on view all semester.
You will also notice that we have moved the display of 
new books we add to the collection to a location much 
closer to the front of the building. We hope to feature 
faculty publications there in the near future, too.
Finally, I am deeply grateful that many of you 
contributed to focus groups and other opportunities to 
inform the work that has gone into the library master 
planning over the summer. We look forward to the final 
deliverable from McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture, 
which will provide us with a phased renovation plan. 
We will continue to engage you in conversations 
surrounding our future renovations as we advance the 
work to transform our library into a dynamic faculty- 
and student-centered resource on campus.
I hope the semester has started off well for you. As you 
get settled into your fall routine, please do not hesitate 
to contact me if there are things we can do to support 
you and your students.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEANFESTOONED PATIO!
We’ve always thought our back patio, with the 
towering arches, would be the perfect spot to hang 
some banners. We’re getting some! Soon, when 
you walk over to the stadium to pick up your home 
game tickets, you’ll be able to turn around and see 
the banners on the rear façade of the library. We 
hope you like them! In fact, if you take a selfie with 
the banners in the background, send it to us or tag 
us on Instagram @sandorteszlerlibrary. We’d like 
to thank the good folks at OMC for taking the time 
to organize a photo shoot with Rosie the Boston 
Terrier. She was very eager to sniff out library 
resources, and we hope you are, too!
NEW BOOKS ARE IN
The New Books area is now closer to the entrance 
of the library, and they're shelved in call number 
order to make it easier for browsing. They are now 
located along the glass wall of the Writing Center. 
Not to anthropomorphize, but they are eager for 
you and your students to check them out (and read 
them), and they’re happy to be in a more visible 
location for you.

and marked a plot measuring 125 x 88 
meters. Once the plot was established, 
we noted and photographed the plant 
species found along two parallel 
transects. Classes will continue to use 
this plot, and another that we marked 
the next morning, to observe changes in 
a long leaf ecosystem after a disturbance. 
Continuing to study the transects will be 
important in the years to come, and the 
two plots will serve as an outdoor 
classroom for new studies and ideas to 
be explored. 
     After our day in the field, the Tysons 
welcomed us into their home with a 
truly generous display of hospitality. We 
gobbled down delicious, homemade 
gumbo as we watched the sun dip 
behind the cypress trees of the Little Pee 
Dee River. Our department and students 
are immensely fortunate to have the 
Tysons actively involved and engaged in 
our program, selflessly sharing both their 
resources and time. As a graduating 
senior, I look forward to following the 
studies that will take place on the two 
plots in the future and have little doubt 
that the Tysons will continue to play a 
pivotal role in the academic careers of 
environmental studies majors.

     Early Saturday morning, some of our 
ENVS Senior Seminar class, taught by 
Professor Lane, loaded up the van and hit 
the road to Dillon County, South Carolina 
to meet Dr. George Tyson,’72 at his long 
leaf pine plantation. Dr. Tyson has 
graciously invited students to his residence 
along the Little Pee Dee River each spring 
following the Tyson Family Lecture Series 
for a weekend retreat of hands-on learning 
in the field.   
     After a presentation on the history of 
long leaf pine management in the South, 
we toured different tracts of the 1600-acre 
property and observed stands of pine that 
ranged from newly planted seedlings to 
mature, 35-year-old trees. Remaining loyal 
to our beloved “three legged stool” model, 
our discussion not only focused on the 
science behind long leaf forests and 
prescribed burns, but also circled back to 
the economics of tree farming. Professor 
Lane even discovered his inner John 
Denver while writing his own folk 
rendition called “Dillon County High.” 
     In the afternoon, we moved to a tract 
that had recently been clear-cut and 
poisoned and got to work on our primary 
objective for the trip. With the help of Dr. 
Tyson and our professors, we measured

Bard College – Bard Center for Environmental Policy

     Bard College, a private liberal arts college, is 
located on the shore of the Hudson River, which is 
just north of New York City.  The Bard Center for 
Environmental Policy (Bard CEP) was founded in 
1999 and the graduate program was launched in 
2001. 
     Today, Bard CEP offers a MS in Environmental 
Policy and a MS in Climate Science and Policy.   
     The Peace Corps Master’s International Program 
also provides the opportunity to incorporate the 
Peace Corps service with a master’s degree.

     A joint program with Pace Law School, one of 
the nation’s top five environmental law programs, 
provides a MS degree, in environmental policy or 
climate science and policy, and a JD with a 
certificate in environmental law.  Two other dual 
degrees are offered.  The MS/MAT is for students 
seeking advanced knowledge in environmental 
policy and certification in secondary education 
and the MS/MBA is for students developing 
careers that combine the skills needed in both

on Lawson’s Fork and made time for a writing reflection of their past four years at Wofford.

Thomas Rain Crowe. With doors open 
and the sounds of the forest nearby, we 
slept among a small library, writing 
desk, and a distinctive, indescribable 
place-based energy. 
     The next morning, Thomas Rain 
Crowe visited our group. He read from 
his memoir Zoro’s Field and played his 
traditional, double barrel Native 
American flute. Crowe created an awe-
inspiring soundscape that captured our 
attention and completed a narrative for 
our time in the mountains. 
    On the way back to Wofford, we 
stopped at a Lake Jocassee overlook and 
Judaculla Rock. Both of these sites show 
an anthropogenic attempt to shape the 
natural world: one a product of a desire 
for hydrologic energy, the other an 
eroded mound of soapstone meant to 
record elements of the everyday and of 
the sacred. Our drive back was full of 
conversation and reflection as we 
approached campus and the end of our 
time within the department. Although 
our class discussions and activities in the 
field are coming to a close, our 
perception of the world—one standing 
upon a steady, three-legged stool—will 
survive well beyond our time in the 
Black Science Annex or with our fellow 
Wofford environmentalists.

     The Environmental Studies Senior 
Class recently kayaked the Lawson’s Fork 
as a part of our Senior Seminar. Much has 
changed since our first journey on the river 
three years ago: Fall has changed to 
spring, knowledge has increased our 
understanding of the world, and our 
personal treks have taken many turns. 
Reflection has harnessed our class with the 
ability to observe growth and make 
judgments about the changes that have 
occurred over the past four years. Floating 
upstream to the chute on a cloudy day 
properly bookends our physical and 
intellectual interactions as undergraduates 
with the natural world. 
     A smaller group of seniors also spent 
the weekend in and around the Blue Ridge 
Mountains. Our schedule was packed: 
drive along the parkway, enjoy the unique 
views and waterfalls, interact with Native 
American sacred sites, observe the 
reintroduced elk in their habitat. Our base 
camp for the trip was Professor Lane’s 
property. Here, the seniors—along with 
Professor Lane, Dr. Savage, and the 
complete Brewitt family—spent time in 
discussion and in reflection as freshwater 
springs bubbled out from the ground in a 
deeply verdant landscape. We students 
spent the evening sleeping in The Tower—
a unique, two-story structure built by 
Professor Lane’s friend and fellow writer,

Convocation on

Carol! 
 
 
   “To see a world in a grain of sand,  
and a Heaven in a wildflower,  
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,  
And Eternity in an hour.”  
     John W. Harrington, beloved Professor of 
Geology at Wofford for almost 20 years, 
loved this passage by William Blake and 
made it come alive for his students year after 
year, as he introduced them to the wondrous 
dynamic world of the deep past and 
shimmering present. Professor Harrington’s 
style of promoting curiosity in the field and 
delighting in the challenge of interpreting 
observations is a guiding force of the 
Environmental Studies Program that is part 
of his legacy.  Concepts like the “wasness of 
the is,” the “cone of vision,” and the “four 
critical aspects” with its questions of “what, 
which, where, and how?” provide a tool kit 
necessary to fully understanding an 
environmental situation.  The comparative 
and holistic use of humanities, sciences, and 
social sciences perspectives provides the 
liberal arts context in which these tools are 
used to define, understand, and seek 
solutions to modern environmental 
problems.  One of John Harrington’s 
intellectual heroes was geologist Charles 
Lyell whose dictum was “trust reason not 
authority.”  John encouraged, valued and 
rewarded personal insights and creative 
reasoning in his students.  This award in his 
honor continues that tradition.

sustainability science class used 
the BCycles on campus to 
compare transit times for driving, 
biking, and walking various 
routes. 
     The Harrington Award is given by the 
Environmental Studies Program to the 
graduating senior who embodies John 
Harrington’s curiosity, creativity and 
excitement for field learning, while 
exhibiting high academic achievement, 
scholarly promise, and intellectual and 
moral integrity. 
     We are delighted to present the 2017 
John W. Harrington Award to Carol Morel. 
Earning a BA in Environmental Studies and 
a BS in Chemistry, Carol has excelled at 
every opportunity, and she has also been 
inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. 
     Carol’s internships took her across the 
country, from the Smithsonian to Arizona’s 
Biosphere 2, where she conducted research 
that she recently presented at the American 
Chemical Society’s national meeting in San 
Francisco. As a Bonner scholar, Carol 
worked 4 years at the environmental agency 
Upstate Forever, with projects mostly 
focused on land use planning. 
     In between she made time to enjoy 
“thinking like a river,” including a fire-lit 
night on Goat Island near the confluence of 
the Pacolet and the Broad. John Harrington 
would approve! 
     She is headed to the University of 
Maryland to pursue a Ph.D. in 
hydrogeochemistry, where we hope she will 
find some time to paddle a kayak now and 
then. Carol, we are so proud of you!

American University – Washington College of Law –  Environmental Law Program 
      American University’s Washington College of 
Law (WCL) offers Juris Doctor and graduate 
admissions.  Various JD degrees, domestic and 
international, are offered in international affairs, 
business, public administration, and public policy, 
along with their Master of Law degree (LLM) or 
Doctor of Juridical Science degree (SJD).  US New & 
World Report includes Washington College of Law 
as one of the top ten international law programs in 
the country. 
     Their Environmental Law Program was 
established in 1990 and continues to grow.  In the 
Program on International and Comparative 
Environmental Law, WCL students are integrated 
with lawyers and practitioners in the field to focus 
on learning opportunities in client-based research 
and expanded support for student research 
projects.  Students also benefit from the program’s 
internships and externships since there are many 
participating environmental institutions and 
agencies in the Washington, DC area.

both of these were provided for free 
by those businesses. You should 
patronize them! There were also 
breakfast options, healthy and…less 
healthy. In the evening, riders will 
roll down Magnolia Street to the 
ArtWalk before quaffing a special RJ 
Rockers beer, brewed for the 
occasion, called Midnight Rider -it is 
delicious. The pint glass the beer 
comes in is free from them – 
brewmaster Taylor White is a 2012 
Environmental Studies grad. 
Hopefully more and more people, 
faculty, staff, and student, will ride 
to, from, and around Wofford, now 
and in the future. The sustainability 
committee, the campus group 
devoted to making Wofford more 
sustainable in all ways, hopes to 
bring back a Bike Around day in the 
spring semester. 
 
 
 
Heading across town for an 8AM 
class is better when you’re on a bike. 
At 7:30, the heat of the day hasn’t 
settled in on to Spartanburg yet. The 
light is low and soft. As I turn on to 
the Rail Trail, I see all of Spartanburg 
represented on the trail – kids 
getting ready for school, old men 
walking with old friends, Clayton 
Whisnant getting a jog in before 
teaching history. I chug up the hill 
toward town, roll down, and get in to 
the classroom much refreshed, 
happier and perkier than, probably, 
anyone else on campus. 
  
On September 21, all of Wofford’s 
faculty and staff had the chance to 
experience this on Bike Around day. 
It started with a Bike to Work where 
three guided rides took little 
pelotons of Terriers from Hampton 
Heights and Duncan Park downtown. 
There, riders were rewarded with 
(Above) Cyclists met on the Mary 
Black Rail Trail to bike to Wofford 
as a group. The Wofford 
Sustainability Committee wants to 
show there are sustainable solutions 
to our daily commutes. (Below) The 
downtown ArtWalk provided an 
opportunity for bikers to end their 
day with a tour of the galleries and 
enjoy a beverage.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
University of Montana –Environmental Studies Program 
 
 
 
 
     The University of Montana offers a MS degree in 
Environmental Studies (EVST) and a joint MS/JD 
degree in EVST and their Law Program.   
     The Master’s degree in EVST is flexible.  
Students can design their own study programs with 
focus areas in Environmental Education, 
Environmental Justice, Environmental Law, 
Environmental Science, Environmental Writing, 
Sustainable Food and Farming, and other courses of 
interest throughout the University. 
     Along with their study interests there are 
opportunities for students to get involved with 
groups outside the classroom.  Camas is an 
environmental journal that is edited and published 
by EVST graduate students each semester.  
Transboundary Initiative is a collaborative program 
between students at UM and the University of 
Calgary in Canada “focusing on the trans-border 
ecosystem straddling the spine of the Rockies.”
