Dear South Carolina Gamma alumni, family, and friends:
 
Welcome to the Winter issue of our chapter newsletter, a way to stay in touch with 
alumni brothers of our storied chapter of SAE, with our families, and with our friends 
at Wofford and beyond.
 
SC Gamma is dedicated to brotherhood, integrity, and excellence inside and outside 
the classroom.  We have a great group of young men challenging each other and 
growing together.  We appreciate all of the support you have given our chapter to get 
us where we are now.
 
Last weekend, SC Gamma received the Province Rho John Deas Zeal Chapter of the 
Year award for the 2018-2019 academic year.  We are humbled to receive this 
recognition two years in a row.
 
This newsletter will feature articles and photographs focused on: 
- Events in the Spring including Alumni Weekend & Parents weekend

- A new Facebook page and LinkedIn group for our chapter
- Our presentation at the national Executives Academy

The James - Atkins fund is an organization that 
provides students of Wofford College with real 
life investment experience. Working with Dr. 
Swicegood, students do all the research and 
decision making that it takes to manage an 
investment fund.

Scholastic Achievement
SC Gamma is proud of all of our members who 
made the Dean's List this semester.  However, we 
are also proud of every member who made strides 
in improving his overall GPA this semester.
 
Parents, thank you for your academic support of 
your son(s).  We cannot be more happy to be home 
to some of the most creative, passionate, and 
intelligent students at Wofford.
William Stout Earns 
Bronze at SoCon Indoor 
Track & Field 
Championships
William Stout '20, a Dean's List Biology major with 
a perfect GPA in the Fall 2018 semester, earned a 
bronze medal in the Heptathlon at the 2019 
Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field 
Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, on January 
24.
 
William scored first in the 1,000 meter portion of 
the event.
 
Stout holds the school record in the pole vault 
(4.10m / 13’ 5.25”).  He was named to the 2018 
Indoor All-SoCon Heptathlon Team the 2018 
Outdoor All-SoCon Decathlon Team.
 
SC Gamma Hosts 2019 Province Rho Leadership School
The brothers of SC Gamma hosted the 2019 Province Rho 
Leadership School on Wofford's campus.
 
Using the True Gentleman Experience as a model for 
programming, the chapter offered the following sessions 
to approximately 80 attendees from across the state.
 
Mental Health Update
Ms. Lauren Hulstrand (Wellness Center) spoke on mental 
health issues, especially as they pertain to college males.  
She highlighted strategies for coping with depression and 
anxiety; discussed ways to approach others suffering 
from depression; and offered statistics on mental health 
and suicide among college students.
 
Sexual Health
Ms. Lisa Lefebvre (Wellness Center) and Dr. John Lefebvre 
(Psychology) spoke on STI's, STD's, contraception, Plan B, 
and a variety of other issues pertinent to males on a 
college campus.
 
Diversity and Leadership
Demario Watts (Assistant Dean for Diversity and 
Leadership) talked with brothers about diversity, 
inclusion, and leadership issues.
Fraternity in Daily Life
Carter Atchison '20 and Nolan Dee '20 discussed the 
importance of reflecting the values of The True 
Gentleman in all aspects of life.
 
Students Interested in Law School
Judge Mark Hayes and Austin Ciuffo '19 shared insights 
from applying to law school to a distinguished career on 
the bench.
 
Microsoft Excel
Dr. Boyce Lawton taught sessions on some of the skills 
most often cited as "lacking" among college graduates. 
 
Keynote Address
Robert Barber '71, shared his journey from Wofford 
College through medical school, divinity school, and law 
school.  After serving as a Methodist minister, a lawyer, 
lobbyist, and a member of the SC House of 
Representatives, Mr. Barber now runs Bowens Island 
Restaurant - founded by his grandparents.  Barber shared 
the importance of living an honorable life amidst difficult 
times, of giving to those in need, and of always upholding 
the ideals of the True Gentleman.

Dr. Lawton becomes Brother Lawton
John Stringfellow, our Province Archon asked our chapter to travel to Furman to initiate brothers from the 
Furman class of '68 who had never officially gone through the ritual of becoming an SAE brother. Another great 
aspect of this trip was that the Province invited Dr. Lawton, our chapter advisor, to be initiated into the 
fraternity. So six of our current brothers, four pictured here, drove to Greenville to help with the initiation. We 
helped initiate 10 members of the Furman chapter from the 60's along with initiating Dr. Lawton. 
A Word From Our Advisor
I've joked with my friends that joining a Greek 
fraternity was not on my "bucket-list" of things to do 
in my 50th year.  But I'll be completely honest and say 
that few things have filled me with as much joy and 
sense of accomplishment as working with the young 
men of SC Gamma.
 
It has been an honor to watch the SC Gamma chapter 
of Sigma Alpha Epsilon change over the last few years 
as its members have adopted a sense of duty to the 
ideals they recite in the True Gentleman.
 
Our chapter has changed.  We have moved from a 
constant fear of being closed to a quiet sense of pride 
in what we stand for and how we seek to help those 
around us.  
 
As an advisor, and now a brother, I am humbled at 
the trust the brothers place in me and their 
willingness to share their hopes, troubles, and fears.
 
For any of you who have "disconnected" with the 
chapter over the years, I'd like to offer a sincere 
invitation for you to reconnect.  Your time, your

talent, and your mentorship would mean a great deal 
to these young men.
 
For any of you wanting to provide a long-lasting 
measure of support, I would encourage to you 
consider giving to the SC Gamma Education Fund 
held by the SAE Foundation.
 
Donations are held in an endowment with proceeds 
used to send brothers to Leadership Schools and 
other national functions.  If the fund ever grows to the 
point that available funds exceed the need for 
national events, excess funds can be awarded as 
scholarships to SC Gamma members.
 
I give to the fund each month, and I would humbly ask 
that you consider a gift as well, no matter the amount.  
Our education fund is very small, and we need your 
help.

Brothers Abroad
Wofford continues to be a nationwide leader in students 
studying abroad for academic credit.
 
Last fall, SC Gamma had three students abroad:
  Alex Collie '20 (Business Economics/Spanish) - Barcelona, Spain
  Ben Myer '20 (English) - Prague, Czech Republic
  Cole Sanford '19 (Chinese) - Nanjing, China
 
This spring, the chapter has four members abroad:
  Jack Lesesne '19 (Finance/Spanish) - Spain
  Sam Ross '20 (Business Economics) - Spain
  Jack Sicker '19 (Business Economics) - Spain
  Christian Womeldorph '20 (Accounting/Finance) - Spain
 
Interim is a great opportunity for Wofford students to explore 
experiences that they would not normally partake in during the 
regular semester.  Our brothers took full advantage of this, 
traveling across the world to learn about different cultures.
Over the course of Interim, we had brothers travel to Japan, 
Morocco, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Italy and many other countries.
 
"I spent interim in Lanai, Hawaii, working 
in the dental and medical clinic on the 
island. I was fortunate to gain great 
medical and dental experience in the 
clinics, but my favorite part was 
snorkeling, spearfishing, and camping on 
the remote beaches there. I am incredibly 
grateful for those who made this trip a

A Time for Reflection
Cole Sanford '19 makes new friends in 
the Gobi Desert.
"Since Prague is based in Central Europe, I was able to travel 
easily and frequently throughout Europe, which is one of the main

SC Gamma Presents at Inaugural Executives Academy
This year, Sigma Alpha Epsilon 
rebranded the Eminent Archon 
Academy into the Executives 
Academy, expanding the 
invitation to chapter advisors, 
health and safety officers, and 
recruitment chairs. 
 
Wofford sent Carter Atchison 
(EA), Ethan Marshall (H&S), 
Nathan Heinlein (RC), and Dr. 
Boyce Lawton to Chicago in 
January to attend the event.
 
However, because of our great 
work this past semester, Katie 
Gardner, national's education 
officer,  chose our chapter to 
give a presentation in front of 
SAE chapters officers across the 
nation.
 
One of our proudest achievements
SC Gamma offered a 45 minute 
presentation on  Saturday 
morning to over 300 people 
including national 
representatives, chapter 
advisors,  and officers.
 
The chapter offered a pathway 
for rebranding a chapter's image 
based on our work over the last 
few years, and it showed how 
believing first in ourselves is key 
to the successful recruitment of 
new members and to marketing 
the chapter to students, alumni, 
parents, faculty, and the 
administration of the College.

awareness on Wofford's 
campus.  
 
The JED Foundation's Director of 
Community Outreach, Maria 
Theodore, credits the 
presentation with many SAE 
chapters reaching out to JED in 
the last two months inquiring 
about supporting the effort to 
increase mental health 
awareness and suicide 
prevention on their campuses.
 
The JED Foundation has since 
asked if they could use SC 
Gamma's work as a model for 
others to incorporate education 
into fundraising efforts.

Mental health, It's not Over
During Finals Week of the fall semester, our chapter partnered 
with organizations such as Active Minds, Psychology Kingdom, 
and the Wellness Center to host a de-stress event with puppies 
and hot chocolate at the Sandor Teszler Library. Mental Health 
information was was available at the event, and the College 
provided hot chocolate and granola bars.
 
Our Chapter has chosen to continue to do work with the JED 
Foundation moving forward after their gracious appreciation 
for the work we did in the fall. A representative from the JED 
Foundation sent us an email asking for as much information as 
possible from the event. 
 
Why?
 
Because she said that JED would use our philanthropy in the 
spring as a model for education and fundraising across college 
campuses.
 
We are excited to continue to create conversations about 
mental health, let's all remember to not be afraid to open 
up.

Supporting youth in our 
local community
SC Gamma brothers Mills Brice '20 and Rhett 
Andrews '20 spent the fall semester coaching 
young men on The Episcopal Church of the 
Advent's youth basketball team.
 
The coaches' efforts led the team to win the 
league championship in February.
 
Mills Brice is majoring in Accounting and 
Finance, and he serves SC Gamma as the 
Eminent Treasurer.
 
Rhett Andrews is finance major serving the 
chapter as the Alumni Relations chair.  Rhett's 
father, Ronnie Andrews is an SC Gamma alumni 
who also serves on Wofford's Board of Trustees.

for their respective weekends. This is a great 
opportunity to meet some of the best people.

The Chapter proudly extended bids to seventeen 
men on Sunday, February 17, 2019.
 
According to national policy, all men became full 
members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the SC 
Gamma Chapter within 96 hours.  Initiation was 
held on Tuesday, February 19, in the Anna Todd 
Wofford room on campus.

Kayaking 101 by Jade Lawson ’23 
It has become 
tradition for students 
in ENVS 101 to 
spend one lab class 
kayaking the 
Lawson’s Fork of the 
Pacolet River as an 
introduction to 
Environmental 
Studies. 
 
 
 
 
 
ENVS 101 students kayak to the Upper Shoals on the Lawson’s Fork Creek at Glendale 
on the banks of the river. Both hiking 
and kayaking allowed me to learn 
more and more about Lawson’s 
Fork’s historical background. Our 
destination was the shoals and 
learning about what the shoals 
connects and how it was formed was 
amazing to learn. Also being able to 
compare the land experience to the 
water experience on the same day, 
was very eye opening. Also it was 
neat to think about how the river used 
to mainly be used for transportation. 
Overall, I was very thankful for this 
experience, and would love to kayak 
again in the future! 
Our lab on Wednesday was one of the 
most fun, but most tiring labs I have 
been on. We got to hike and kayak. It 
was very interesting how hiking is so 
different than kayaking. For someone 
like me, who hikes all the time, I chose 
to hike first. Hiking first allowed me to 
really focus on the organisms around 
me, but once I got in a kayak, my 
perspective changed. It was my first 
time kayaking and the guide was super 
helpful. Kayaking got me out of my 
comfort zone and let me experience 
Lawson’s Fork in a whole new way. It 
was actually quite relaxing going slow 
and observing everything around me

Virginia Tech – Master of Natural Resources 
 
 
 
Virginia Tech’s Center for Leadership in Global 
Sustainability offers a Master of Natural Resources 
(MNR).   
Designed as a professional degree, the MNR is 
offered in two flexible formats to meet the needs of 
an increasingly diverse audience—a 100% Online 
format (MNR) and an Executive format in Global 
Sustainability (XMNR) for professionals aiming to 
advance their careers or shift to leadership roles in 
sustainability fields. Each of the degrees are 30-
credit, non-thesis programs that provide an 
interdisciplinary perspective, transformative 
experience, and international exchange as core 
elements of the curriculum. The MNR degree does 
not require a GRE score for admission. 
The online MNR combines online coursework and 
participation in a 10-day, face-to-face international 
trip that takes the place of the typical capstone 
project. The XMNR includes coursework and a 
capstone directed-study project.

UC Berkeley will give a talk. Dr. Hayes is best known for showing how the herbicide 
atrazine acts as an endocrine disruptor on the development of amphibians, leading to 
feminization of male frog traits. There is also a lunchtime discussion planned for that

Trapping and Shooting Wolverines for Science by George Corn ’69

extrapolate reasonably sound population 
estimates.   
But given the size of the wolverine’s 
suspected range, how do you set up enough 
camera traps in likely locations to have a 
valid estimate? 
One solution in the Bitterroot Valley in 
western Montana, where I live, has been to 
ask winter outdoor enthusiasts to volunteer 
as citizen scientists. The program, 
organized and run primarily by Defenders 
of Wildlife, attracted 150 volunteers. 
Dubbed Wolverine Watchers and broken 
into teams of 5-7, the teams, depending on 
their site location, either snow shoe, ski or 
snowmobile to it once a month from 
December through April. There are 
approximately 25 sites in the mountains 
flanking our valley. I’ve been an avid 
backcountry skier and hiker for years, but 
I’ve never been lucky enough to see a 
wolverine, so I jumped at the chance to 
volunteer. Here are pictures from my 
team’s trap site. To learn more, THE book 
on wolverines is called The Wolverine Way 
by Doug Chadwick.                 
I’ve been trapping and shooting wolverines 
for the last five years thanks to the 
Endangered Species Act. For reasons 
necessitated by the Act, nonprofits and 
state and federal wildlife agencies need a 
science-based estimate of the number of 
wolverines in the lower 48. The current 
rough estimate is 250-300 in the 
continental US, primarily in mountains of 
Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the 
Washington Cascades.  
The natural habitat of these non-
hibernating carnivores, so emblematic of 
wilderness, are areas of deep winter snow 
and long-lasting spring snow pack. Given 
their reclusive nature, naturally low 
population density, notoriously large 
individual territories and the remote and 
enormous mountain landscapes they 
inhabit, a method of “trapping” them by 
“shooting” them with a game camera and 
snaring DNA was developed. This is done 
in winter when they are likely to be 
attracted to bait. The trap sites, set at 
specific locations of likely wolverine 
habitat, allow trained researchers to

The University of Wisconsin’s Nelson Institute for 
Environmental Studies offers three options for 
graduate degrees.  
Environment & Resources offers a MS and PhD and 
prepares students with knowledge of the 
environment and the ability to find creative 
solutions to environmental problems.   
Environmental Conservation offers two accelerated, 
professional master’s programs. The program is built 
on the legacy of pioneering environmental leaders 
such as John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and Gaylord 
Nelson. “It helps early-career working professionals 
advance their leadership, conservation and 
environmental management expertise through campus 
learning and remote experiences.”   
The MS in Water Resources integrates biological 
and physical sciences with engineering, law, and 
the social sciences.  
Students can also work directly with conservation 
organizations such as Conservation International, 
International Crane Foundation, the Nature 
Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Society, and 
World Wildlife Fund.

AASHE Annual Conference Report by Eleanor Crawford ’20 
 
 
 
 
 
 
so sacred, and molding it into a force of 
power can be just the change we need. 
Power to the people! 
Another especially impactful talk was 
with Bill Mckibben, environmentalist, 
activist, and author, who has been my 
idol for years. He created the platform 
350.org, which has spread globally as 
both a call to action and a beacon of 
hope. His talk began with chilling 
statistics and images regarding the turn 
our planet has taken as a result of human 
activity. When I met him, he asked me 
what I was doing for the environment. 
When I faltered in my response he said 
he was proud of me, and that I should be 
proud of myself. He went on to remind 
me that I can always do more, which I 
found simultaneously humbling and 
inspiring. 
The conference was also extremely 
welcoming. As a solo traveler, I met new 
friends from campuses and organizations 
across the country. This does not even 
begin to describe the multitude of 
experiences from my trip. I would love 
to share more -- just ask. 
Last week I traveled to Spokane, 
Washington for the Association for the 
Advancement of Sustainability in Higher 
Education (AASHE) annual conference. 
The trip was AMAZING!,a total rush, life 
changing and inspirational. I went to at 
least 15 sessions a day where passionate 
speakers shared ideas and experiences 
about how they are making their campuses 
authentically sustainable. Each speaker 
began their presentation with a land 
acknowledgement, paying tribute to the 
indigenous people and culture that remains 
on the land we were on. 
The engaging and empowering talk by 
Varshini Prakash brought tears to my eyes. 
She is the executive director and founder of 
the Sunrise Movement, a platform for 
young adults to engage with climate action, 
while providing tools to hold institutions 
and corporations accountable for their 
carbon footprint. This movement has 
helped to launch the Green New Deal, 
through empowering youth across the 
country to come together and fight for the 
future we deserve. She kindled within her 
audience a new idea of the word power- 
our rage and hope as a collective youth is

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Montana State University – MS in Fish and Wildlife Management 
 
 
The Department of Ecology at Montana State offers 
two graduate degrees in Fish and Wildlife 
Management and Biological Sciences with 
opportunities to continue on with their PhD 
programs in those same areas. 
Coursework in Fish and Wildlife Management 
applies research with careers related to fisheries or 
wildlife biology, while Biological Sciences primarily 
emphasize principles of ecology with careers related 
to government agencies or academia. 
Montana State’s Fish and Wildlife Management 
program is one of the oldest and most successful in 
the US. Its location in the Rocky Mountains 
utilizes the local land, rivers and streams and 
makes it ideal for research close to campus. 
Students are advised by six faculty members in the 
Ecology Department and two members of the 
Montana Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit, 
which is part of the USGS’s Biological Resources 
Division.

Jerusalem artichokes from the Goodall 
garden that they then took to the Church 
of the Advent to help make artichoke 
relish for the church’s annual Bazaar. 
Ongoing Job Opportunities in Conservation and Restoration: The Great Basin Institute is a 
nonprofit organization that specializes in conservation and restoration all throughout 
the West. They are currently hiring for over 60 paid positions ranging from ecological 
monitoring, wildlife monitoring, trail maintenance, range land management, and fuels

I can see remnants of the first flume. If I 
stand at the Goodall Center, I see that 
stone structure incorporated into the 
concrete dam that was built in the early 
1900's.  
People started tapping into power that 
nature provided. As our appetite for 
power grew we dammed more and 
more. Now fossil fuel provides the 
energy that used to be harnessed at 
Lawson's Fork; but the sluice and dam 
continue affecting the landscape. The 
once expansive millpond has filled with 
sediment and created wetlands. A forest 
is growing up that is very different from 
the one that was drowned by the 
millpond.  
30 years ago I thought that stone and 
concrete dam would last forever; now I 
realize that water will wear it away. I 
wonder when; and I wonder what else 
will change as it does. 
At the far end of Wofford's 4-acre 
Glendale tract stands the mill dam. The 
power of falling water is the main 
attraction of this place. When I moved 
here 30 years ago, kudzu and bamboo 
covered the creek banks so effectively 
that most people passed without seeing 
the dramatic views. The more time I 
spend here, the more evidence I see of 
man's tinkering and I wonder how our 
future actions will change the place.  
Long ago people chiseled a sluice 
through solid rock at Glendale's Upper 
Shoals (1/4 mile upstream). They 
unplugged a natural dam to use 
hydropower. Now that energy is 
focused into a 6 ft. channel instead of 
spreading across a 60 ft. shoal.  
In the 1800's a wooden flume was 
erected to focus the water flow at the 
Lower shoals.  A stone structure 
anchored that flume and controlled the 
flow of water into a second flume that 
carried water to power a wheel. If I

Columbia University – MPH in Environmental Health Sciences 
 
 
 
 
 U.S. News & World Report ranks The Mailman 
School of Public Health at Columbia University as 
one of the top five schools of public health.  The 
graduate program offers a Master of Public Health 
(MPH) in environmental health sciences.   
Students in The Department of Environmental 
Health Science (EHS) investigate how the 
environment influences human health. They study 
topics such as biological mechanisms, 
environmental health, data analysis, risk assessment, 
occupational hazards, and policy analysis. In the 
field, students collaborate with scientists and 
health officials across New York City, the country 
and around the globe to address environmental 
threats to health in communities worldwide. 
New curriculum for the MPH program was 
introduced in the fall of 2012 providing skills and 
training for today’s complex public health 
challenges.  The program also offers a Master of 
Science and one in Health Administration.
