A call for self-care and self-compassion

If you've ever taken a yoga class, you might remember that instructors end 
classes with a final relaxation pose. You are asked to lie on your back with your 
arms stretched and placed a bit out from your sides. Your legs are apart, and your 
eyes are closed. The instructor subtly reminds you to relax and that the work for 
the class is done. You have reached the time in class to completely rejuvenate 
yourself. 
This has always been my favorite part of yoga classes, which are my preferred 
way to care for myself. I usually do this at the Spartanburg YMCA, but now I am 
doing it in my living room with a yoga YouTuber while my toddler naps in the next 
room.
Reminding myself and my students about the importance of self-care is where I 
find myself while teaching amidst a pandemic. I traditionally teach classes on the 
Middle East and the ethnographic method, but this semester I want my students 
to remember the value of self-care. Therefore, my course is no longer solely 
focused on the traditional work we originally planned. Yes, we will still do some 
items left on the syllabus, and I hope those tasks will be a moment to escape the 
anxiety of the pandemic and not cause undue stress to my students. Yet at the 
core of the class now is adding in the practice of self-care and self-compassion. 
In the last two years, I have experimented with adding self-care into my classroom 
- usually a day or two each semester where I ask students to use time they would
have spent in class to care for themselves - in whatever way or form that they
need. We also do a few readings on self-care. Usually at the heart of the
discussion is how self-care is going against the go, go, go narrative of a very
driven and busy American society. Now, that entire narrative has been turned on
its head.
To fight this virus, we are told that doing less is doing more. We have been asked 
to reconstruct how we care for others - to not be with them but instead to distance 
ourselves from them and shelter in. We have stopped what we were planning to 
do, and we wait. But sheltering in, just like self-care, is embedded with privilege. 
For example, some of us are still working long hours while also taking care of, or 
homeschooling, children, and our workload has increased exponentially. Others 
are working in essential services patrolling the streets, caring for sick patients, 
stocking grocery store shelves or in labs hurriedly seeking a vaccine for this virus. 
Some of us have houses and yards to shelter in for comfort, while others are 
cramped in small spaces with those who we didn't necessarily plan to be living 
with. All this to say, though we now have the "time" for self-care, it can still be 
difficult to achieve, and it can be a challenge to carve out time for ourselves even 
if sometimes it feels like all we have some days is time. Now more than ever I am 
reminded of the quote from Audre Lorde, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, 
it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare."
We all deserve to self-care.
I'm reminding my students that it is OK to not be as productive as we initially 
planned. It is hard to concentrate, and life has become ever more complicated. It 
might take more effort, but caring for ourselves is a way to sustain ourselves right 
now. 
In my classes the most important assignment I can give my students right now is 
to practice the ritual of self-care. Self-care can take many forms in this new normal 
we all find ourselves in. It might be a nap during a quiet period in your home, a 
soothing cup of herbal tea while enjoying your favorite fun TV show, podcast or 
movie or taking a walk out in a secluded part of nature.  Self-care might be 
Zooming a friend and talking about how your day or week has gone. Self-care 
might be writing in your journal about the surrealness of our new reality. All these 
little things that seem pointless have a point: They are about getting yourself in a 
relaxed position and honoring the work you have done.
We have entered the time of Savasana. Please be kind to yourselves right now, 
know that being productive can mean something very different in a crisis and 
allow your pre-COVID-19 expectations for yourself to lower without feeling guilt. 
Right now, we all deserve self-compassion.
Alianza Spartanburg responds to challenges for immigrants during
the pandemic
On Friday, April 10, Alianza Spartanburg hosted a virtual roundtable with
advocates statewide who are working to ensure access to information, health
services and aid for Spanish-speaking and immigrant residents during the
pandemic. Alianza Spartanburg (formerly known as Hispanic Alliance
Spartanburg) is a social impact network that works to facilitate, encourage and
promote the inclusion of members of the Latinx community in improving quality of
life in Spartanburg County. It was founded eight years ago by Dr.
Laura Barbas Rhoden, professor of Spanish. "Alianza Spartanburg has met every 
month since our founding in 2012, with the exception of March 2020 - it took a
pandemic to keep us from coming together!" says Barbas Rhoden. "Since
we knew our April meeting would be virtual, steering team member Araceli
Hernandez-Laroche (USC Upstate) had the idea to feature fellow leaders across
the state working to address challenges during the pandemic. Natalia Valenzuela
Swanson (Mary Black Foundation) provided expert facilitation so the session
would run smoothly, and I helped manage the logistics of Zoom. It was a beautiful
team effort." The meeting had over 40 participants and helped shape the way
Spartanburg area organizations respond to the challenges immigrant families face
in the pandemic.

Motivating others during challenging times
Kerrington Johnson '23 has a goal of becoming a certified personal trainer. Last 
December, she took on a passion project by recording workout videos and 
uploading them to her own YouTube channel. It's a task that she's fit in while 
juggling schoolwork and her own training as a member of Wofford's women's 
track and field team.
The workouts have had new importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. While 
gyms closed and many sheltered in place, Johnson's routines have helped her 
family and friends stay active.
"Amidst the pandemic and stay-at-home orders, I have turned the channel into a 
place for motivation, daily workouts and dance-along cardio videos," says 
Johnson, a psychology major from Anderson, South Carolina.
She has more than 40 videos, and she's gained more than 70 new subscribers 
for the channel since March. Friends are sharing her workouts on their Facebook 
pages. She likes making content accessible for free, and her favorite people to 
support are young parents who might find it difficult to make time for exercise.
Johnson uploads videos for Monday through Friday every week. Each day's 
workout has a theme. There are "Motivational Mondays," "Tone Up Tuesdays," 
"Weights Wednesdays," "Throwback Thursdays" and "Flex n' Stretch Fridays."
All of her workouts have high-energy music, and she finds opportunities to 
embrace trends like her Tik Tok Dance Party Workout. She also sprinkles in 
personality and humor, especially during "Motivational Monday" and blooper 
reels.
"It's something I have fun doing so the time will pass along quickly," says 
Johnson, who has a long list of songs that her mom has recommended for 
"Throwback Thursdays."
She likes getting feedback on the videos from her family and friends, and that's 
led her to incorporate stretches that are good for beginners and modifications for 
some exercises.
In addition to designing workouts, Johnson also is getting experience writing 
scripts, producing and editing video.
She enjoys the challenges and knowing she's helping people stay healthy.
"It means a lot," Johnson says. "I recognize the importance of a healthy 
lifestyle."

Old Gold and Black student-journalists lead, win awards
The Old Gold and Black student newspaper does not usually publish over the summer, 
but this summer they will. This summer they have begun a “No Voice Unheard” project 
so students, faculty, staff and alumni can share their viewpoint on the current 
nationwide protests. The 2020-21 editorial staff — Allison Sherman, editor in chief; 
Jacob Hollifield, managing editor; and Eyon Brown, senior writer and copy editor — 
wrote this about the project: “As a representation of our student body, we would really 
like to use our platform to document how Wofford is responding to these protests.” Visit 
the student newspaper’s Instagram page @oldgandb to participate.
Also, again this year the Old Gold and Black student newspaper represented Wofford 
College well in the South Carolina Press Association Annual Awards, winning 10 
awards. There are hundreds of submissions in Wofford's division (less than 5,000 
students, non-daily). Wofford College does not offer a journalism program but does well 
each year because critical thinking and writing are competencies shared across the 
curriculum.

The rebellions taking place across the country are in direct response to centuries of a 
train of abuses and usurpations designed to oppress communities of color, and Black 
communities in particular, which resulted in the police killings of Breonna Taylor, 
George Floyd, Tony McDade and so many others. In collaboration with campus 
partners, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, is hosting an Anti-Racism Teach-In Series. 
Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college are invited to participate in

The session will begin the conversation on anti-racism by reflecting on the deeply
entrenched racial history of the U.S. and contextualizing that history to better examine
the protests and rebellions we are experiencing today. Panelists include Claire
Chevrier, Georgetown Law graduate and ACLU of Ohio policy attorney, and Dr. Jean
Swindle, assistant professor of education at East Tennessee State University.

associate professor of Spanish and chair of the Modern Languages Department. 
During this session attendees will engage in the deliberate and intentional act of 
decolonizing contemporary understandings of equity, inclusion and allyship to develop 
effective methods in disrupting systems of injustice through anti-racist behaviors and 
actions in our lives. This session is open to all attendees with a willingness and 
commitment to understand that their dominate identity can be used to center and uplift 
marginalized voices as equal partners in disrupting racist, oppressive systems of 
inequity wherever present in contemporary American society.

Wofford College's 11 Class of 2020 ROTC cadets recently participated in a 
virtual commissioning ceremony and took the oath as second lieutenants in the 
U.S. Army. A video from the event is above. They received congratulations from 
Army leaders and a keynote address from Ret. Brig. Gen. Edward Donnelly. An 
in-person ceremony is being planned for Commencement weekend in August at 
Wofford.

site, and many beautiful mountains and 
rainforests.  I also studied food security 
and sovereignty in some different areas of 
Peru, and how climate change directly 
affects smaller scale farmers and 
agricultural production.  My very favorite 
place though, as one would assume, was 
visiting Machu Picchu.  Photos truly do 
not do it justice, and the guide I had was 
actually from a family of people 
indigenous to the surrounding land, which 
made the experience even more genuine 
and informative.  There were alpacas 
roaming along the ruins, and the views 
were beyond what I had expected- a truly 
unforgettable experience! 
This January, I spent my Interim in 
Cusco, Peru participating in a program on 
Climate Change and Culture.  As an 
Environmental Studies major with some 
background on the topic, I was so excited 
to learn more about climate change and 
global environmental issues, especially in 
a location I was not familiar with.  It was 
such a cool experience both being in this 
new culture and hearing from people of 
all backgrounds that lived and worked 
there.  I went to so many local markets, 
saw all sorts of local foods and textiles, 
and ate some amazing food.  I was able to 
go to Maras, a salt mine (even tasted the 
salt!), and Moray, an Incan archeological 
Crawford visited Machu 
Picchu and experienced 
the local culture of Peru 
during Interim.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Duke University – Nicholas School of the Environment 
 
Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment was 
created to combine the divisions of the School of 
Forestry, Environmental Studies, and their Marine 
Laboratory and offers master’s degrees in 
Environmental Management (MEM), Forestry 
(FM), International Environmental Policy (iMEP), 
and Environmental Leadership (DEL-MEM) for 
working professionals to further their careers. 
The MEM program offers seven specialized 
concentrations including business, coastal 
management, ecosystem science, environmental 
health, energy, economics and policy, and water 
resource management. The FM program is for 
students interested in sustainable management of 
forested ecosystems. Either of these two on-
campus programs can be combined concurrently 
with a master’s in business, law, public policy, 
engineering or education. 
Students versed in Chinese can also pursue the 
iMEP at Duke Kunshan University in China. 
Duke – Nicholas School of the Environment 
Ongoing Summer Courses through University of Montana: A 3-week Wilderness Policy and Packing 
course (June8-26) and a 5-day Wilderness Pack Trip (June29-July3) combine to a 4-week, 
5-credit summer course in wilderness policy and horse/mule packing and learning how to 
travel the wilderness with horses and mules and maintain trails in the Bob Marshall 
Wilderness Complex. Scholarships available.

Breitenstein named to SoCon Hall of Fame
Eric Breitenstein '12 was named to the SoCon Hall of Fame along with athletes 
who've been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Pro 
Football Hall of Fame, an NCAA pioneer, an NCAA record holder and a 10-year 
Major League Baseball veteran.
"This is an incredible honor, Breitenstein says. "I am thrilled to be listed alongside 
some of the greatest athletes of all time, not just in our conference, but in the 
history of sports. Seriously, Steph Curry! Arnold Palmer! The Southern 
Conference has had a storied history, and as it nears the 100th year of existence, 
I am proud to say I had the opportunity to play in this league. I am so grateful to 
have had the opportunity to learn from Mike Ayers and the entire coaching staff at 
Wofford College, to study at Wofford College and to work with my

Breitenstein played football at Wofford from 2008-12. He was a first-team All-
American in each of his final three seasons. Breitenstein, who played fullback, 
finished his career as Wofford's career rushing leader with 5,734 yards, a mark 
that ranks second in SoCon history. He set the SoCon's single-game rushing 
mark with 321 yards in a win over Elon in 2012 and surpassed his own single-
season college record with 2,035 rushing yards that season, second-most in 
league history.
Breitenstein, who first set the college record with 1,639 rushing yards in 2010, 
finished his career with 32 games with at least 100 yards rushing, including an 
NCAA-record-tying 11 straight in 2012. He ranks fifth in SoCon history in career 
rushing yards per game (114.6) and all-purpose yards (5,843) and is second in 
career carries with 912. Breitenstein is also third in SoCon lore with six 200-yard 
rushing games, 65 touchdowns scored and 65 rushing touchdowns and is fifth in 
career scoring (390) and seventh in yards per carry (6.3). A two-time SoCon 
Offensive Player of the Year and the 2012-13 SoCon Bob Waters Male Athlete of 
the Year, Breitenstein helped the Terriers reach the FCS playoffs and finish in the 
top 15 in the national rankings in each of his four full seasons. Breitenstein was 
inducted into Wofford's Hall of Fame in 2017 and had his No. 7 jersey retired by 
the school in 2019.
The SoCon, which is preparing for its 100th season, established its Hall of Fame 
in 2009. Former Wofford football coach Mike Ayers is the only other Terrier in the 
conference's Hall of Fame.
Rodriguez drafted by Seattle Mariners
Brett Rodriguez, a student-athlete who played infield on the Wofford baseball
team, has signed a free-agent contract with the Seattle Mariners.  
Rodriguez, a senior from Queensbury, New York, started all 17 games in 2020 at
third base. He was batting .250 with 16 hits, 13 runs scored and four RBI, along
with 10 stolen bases. He was ranked third in the SoCon in stolen bases.
"I am so thankful for the memories I have made over the past four years at
Wofford," Rodriguez says. "I have created lifelong relationships with my coaches
and teammates. I am grateful for the opportunity to play with the Mariners and
excited to start this next chapter."
For his career, he played in 184 games with 164 starts, primarily in the infield. He
posted a .294 batting average with 183 hits, 140 runs scored and 93 RBI. He
holds the college record for career stolen bases with 85. In 2017 he was named
to the SoCon All-Freshman Team. He graduated from Wofford in May, majoring in
finance and accounting and was named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll twice.
"We are extremely happy for Brett to get this well-deserved opportunity," says
Wofford head baseball coach Todd Interdonato. "It's a culmination of how hard he
has worked to develop his game to a professional level. Coach (J.J.) Edwards did
a tremendous job in recruiting him, developing him and coaching him through his
career. The Mariners got a great player who will represent them with class and
dedication through his professional career."

Choosing your path

As we begin to contemplate the possibilities of getting back outside of our homes, 
there are many different opinions. During this time, it's important that you check in 
with yourself, take stock and do what is right and healthy for you since there has 
not been one clear path for what is best for everyone.
For some, getting back out there, seeing friends and returning to the flow of life is 
best. For others, your re-entry into the world outside your home may be slower. 
Find the path that is right for you, which is not always the path that makes sense 
to the rest of the world.
Sometimes we might feel pressure to do what everyone else is doing, but the 
truth is, only you can decide what is best for your health and wellness. Your 
journey through life is meant to be unique – don't be afraid to let your path diverge 
from that of others if it leads to growth, healing or something uniquely yours. If you 
need more time to step foot back out into the world and have the opportunity to 
take that time, then do so. If you can't wait to jump back in – then do that (safely, 
of course).
There are people who jump into pools and there are people who slowly get in step
by step ... and there are people who do a combination of both. Whatever choices 
you make during this next stage of our journey, make the choice that honors and 
cares for you.

Wofford on the national stage
The Masten family recently showed their Wofford Pride on the "TODAY Show." 
Matt Masten '96, Meredith Bergen Masten '97, and daughters Emily and Molly of 
Winston Salem, N.C., sported Wofford gear on the show's Virtual Plaza segment 
earlier this week.
