Wofford's COVID-19 Student Response Team has tips on conversations to have with 
roommates and suggestions on what to do while spending time in quarantine the two weeks 
before returning to campus. Learn more about the college's Wofford Together plan for 
the upcoming academic year.
In Business
Five students spent the summer participating in the Office of Entrepreneurship and 
Innovation's Summer Accelerator program. They've had weekly advising meetings, 
prioritized tasks, honed their entrepreneurial and critical business skills and had regular 
conversations with successful entrepreneurs.
"The program is a phenomenal alternative or even a supplement to a job or internship 
because it provides a different set of opportunities, experiences and skill-development," 
says Tyler Senecal, director of entrepreneurial programs. "The Summer Accelerator is 
designed to aid students in expediting the process of launching their companies or business 
ventures by providing them with key resources, support and structure."
The program's goal is to have students in business by the end of the summer. Read more

COVID-19's impact on Latinx communities
Dr. Laura Barbas Rhoden, a Wofford College Spanish professor, recently participated in a 
conversation with Upstate health care providers about barriers impacting Latinx immigrant 
communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. A recording of the virtual forum is available.

Indifference
A few years ago, thanks to the benevolence of a friend, my wife, Heidi, and I were 
given the opportunity to spend some time with Elie Wiesel. You may remember 
him as the Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize winner who wrote scores of books 
giving us insight into how to live meaningful, purposeful lives. Many students 
arrive at Wofford having read his book, "Night," while in middle school or high 
school. If you are not acquainted with him, a Google search for his quotations is 
worth your time.
During the afternoon and evening we were with Mr. Wiesel, he talked about the 
opposite of love. He said, "The opposite of love is not hate; it is
indifference." I have recalled that statement almost daily since hearing it that day 
for the first time. 
The past few days that statement has been with me virtually every moment. The 
seemingly endless events of racism, which have prompted people to rise up and 
speak out in protest tell me that there are lots of people who refuse to be 
indifferent. The times demand engagement.  Voices need to be heard. Changes 
need to be implemented. A better world needs to be built. Indifference will not 
suffice.
Not long after our experience with Elie Wiesel, he delivered a speech in which he 
said, "The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not 
ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And 
the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference."
All things good and true and just require us to be proactive, to be engaged, to 
care, to listen, to understand, to act. Sometimes our singular actions may seem 
so small, but collectively they make a positive difference. 
Thanks to you who are saying no to racism, hate and injustice. Thanks to you who 
are showing us that the opposite of indifference is art, faith, life and love. We can 
— we must — build with these.  As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told us, "We can't 
wait." That would be indifference.
Dear Wofford family: A message from President Samhat
At Wofford College, diversity, equity and inclusion are core values, and our
community is stronger for our differences. Thus, it is imperative at this time of pain
and dissension throughout our country that we recommit ourselves to these
values as well as a culture of mutual respect and civil discourse.
Wofford's mission calls for each of us to make positive contributions to a
global society, fostering commitment to excellence in character, performance,
leadership, service to others and lifelong learning. Let us use this moment to
respond to current events as our mission instructs us. Listen to the concerns and
frustrations of our neighbors. Develop the courage to speak against racism,
bigotry and hate. Engage with respect, civility and empathy.
The past several months have revealed much about our nation and world. And
while we look forward to returning to some kind of normal after this pandemic, the
lives of those who have been killed or wrongfully accused, the families who
continue to seek justice and the communities that continue to suffer remind us
that we collectively have a responsibility to pursue a normal that reflects the
values of our nation: justice, liberty and equality for all.
Let us strive together to achieve these ends, for we must not tolerate anything
less as a nation and world.
A different type of summer
In addition to not holding in-person classes on campus this summer, the college
will experience its first summer in 25 years without the Carolina Panthers. The
NFL is requiring all teams to hold training camp at home facilities.

To See a World

To See A World is the title of a decades old book written by Dr. John Harrington, a legendary 
professor at Wofford. Students knew him affectionately as "Doc Rock." Written from the 
perspective of his discipline, geology, and influenced by the sensibilities of the liberal arts, the 
book enables readers to look upon the world as it is, and it equips them to see it as it was and 
as it will become. Those of us who had Doc Rock as a professor remember his creative labs. 
Each week there was a field trip to an important local geological site. They were excursions to 
Kings Mountain, Chimney Rock, the Smokies and the beach. Each lab concluded with an 
assignment: "In three sentences describe what you saw and tell how it got to be that way." 
Occasionally there would be the added question, "What will this area look like in 10,000 
years?"
Very soon, we — students, staff and faculty — will once again return to campus and engage 
in efforts “to see a world.” Each year is distinct, and that's just one of the appealing parts of 
being involved in academic culture. It’s an understatement — if not correct grammar — to say 
that this year may be “more distinct” than most.
During my own Wofford orientation, I remember the chaplain telling us that liberal arts 
education is a search for truth. He noted that we were likely to discover that some of the
things we assumed and believed weren’t true. “That’s OK,” he assured. “If it isn’t true you 
don’t need to hang onto it.” When you find the truth,” he said, “It can set you free.”
Education can be freedom, and not just the new-found freedom that comes from being away 
from home. The word “education” comes from two Latin roots: educare and educere. Educare 
means to “train or mold.” In order to develop competence in a discipline or profession, we 
dedicate time to take available information and let it shape, or form, who we are. The word 
educere means “lead out of darkness.” This aspect of education equips us to see where once 
we could not. 
Education can be very uncomfortable. Just when we think we are free from constraints, 
people are working to shape us and help us see new things. Learning to see a world exposes 
ugliness. It reveals moments of pain and of inspiration, though not necessarily in equal 
portion. Learning to see a world enables us to see each other more clearly — our differences, 
our similarities, our distinctive gifts, our aspirations. It enables us to grapple with who we will 
become as individuals, as a community and as a society.
This year we will embark upon that annual journey that is a Wofford liberal arts education with 
a new awareness of the settings and the stories of the past. We will explore more deeply the 
ways that past has impacted the present, and we will chart a future that will emerge from our 
current discomfort. Hopefully, it will be a future that will be honest, just and filled with 
opportunity. That's up to us. I suppose it depends upon what kind of world we allow ourselves 
to see.
What to expect this semester
The fall semester will look different. and Dr. Anne Catllá, director of Wofford's Center for 
Innovation in Learning and associate professor of mathematics, recorded a video offering 
insight on the new teaching environment and tips on how to be successful. Additional details

Wofford's COVID-19 Student Response Team has prepped the campus community on the 
expectations for everyone. WYFF talked to a couple of members of the team about the 
importance of the Wofford Together plan and their thoughts on returning to campus.

Greeks find ways to stay connected
You don't pledge to a sorority or fraternity for social distancing. But that's what 
Greeks have been forced to do during the COVID-19 pandemic and many are 
finding ways to stay connected.
Zoom calls, group chats and "paper chapters" are some of the ways Wofford 
College's sororities and fraternities are continuing philanthropic activity, 
professional development and social activities.
A few weeks ago, Erin Mancini '21, president of Wofford's chapter of Kappa Alpha 
Theta, and other Greek campus leaders learned about the need to halt hosting 
social functions. It was the same day Kappa Alpha Theta had an event 
scheduled.
"People were frustrated at the beginning," says Mancini, who is home in 
Knoxville, Tennessee. "Events were canceled, and everyone was upset and 
angry, and no one really realized the severity of this."
Now, Kappa Alpha Theta sisters are sharing their daily schedules while 
encouraging each other to stay home to reduce the likelihood of getting sick or 
spreading illness. They also are staying on top of sorority obligations with virtual 
meetings.
"It's given us an opportunity to talk about what's important to us that
we need to continue to do," says Mancini.
Kappa Alpha Theta still is planning educational events that involve inviting 
speakers to discuss information to help in careers and personal finance via Zoom 
or a recorded video. They're also considering yoga and baking sessions through 
a Zoom call.
However, there's no desire to make this the new normal.
"We'll probably try to plan some sort of reunion," Mancini says. It's fun to think 
about because it seems so far away right now."
Campus Union meets via Zoom

As we try to navigate these unprecedented times, we have found that staying 
connected despite being socially distanced is key! We, as a Campus Union, got 
together via Zoom to conduct business as normally as possible.
We passed a resolution during our Zoom chat and discussed the upcoming 
elections. Though this is not how we would have wanted to meet, it was nice to 
have a sense of normalcy on a Monday night.
As always, the Wofford College Campus Union is dedicated to representing 
and addressing student concerns, even if we have to come up with creative 
ways to do it!
Rostick volunteers to help
Solana Rostick '23 has joined the ranks of essential personnel back home in 
Tampa, Florida. The first-year student and Bonner Scholar is delivering Meals on 
Wheels (a week's worth of frozen meals at a time to limit contact with the 
nonprofit organization's high-risk clients).
How to help Wofford students right now
The Terrier family, like many across our nation, is experiencing an unprecedented 
moment in history as the situation involving COVID-19 evolves. As you can 
imagine, this can be a stressful time for students. Some incurred unexpected
travel expenses. Some are without a job that they depended on for income. 
Others are finding technology a barrier. Still others live with food insecurity when 
they're back home. The college has received an outpouring of offers to support 
students in this time of need. Wofford already has a fund — OneWofford — that 
is used for just such emergencies.
Making a gift to OneWofford is one way to help, but there are others as well:
If you have a part-time job or paid internship experience through your 
company, especially something a student could do remotely, please contact 
the Career Center at Wofford College. The Class of 2020 also is looking for 
employment. Keep our bright Terriers in mind!

Remote learning begins today
Students and faculty resume the semester remotely today. This is a first for many Wofford 
students and faculty, but all are committed to continuing the semester in this new way 
with the same high standards that are synonymous with the Wofford experience. The 
above video is how the Rev. Dr. Ron Robinson '78, Perkins-Prothro Chaplain and Professor 
of Religion, prepared his Middle Eastern North African Studies 260 students for remote 
learning.
Thanks to all Terriers in health care
More than 1,600 Wofford alumni work in health care. Many of these Terriers are on the
frontlines as our nation responds to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Stacey Hettes, a professor
of biology and associate provost for faculty development, has a special message for all of
those alumni.
Lifelong friends take on COVID-19
Dr. Dana Ray '94 and Wendell Jones '93 recently spent nearly 30 minutes one evening talking 
about what many are discussing these days: COVID-19.
However, this was a Facebook Live conversation between friends and Kappa Alpha Psi 
fraternity brothers that took place on the Facebook page of Changing Your Mind Ministries, a 
church that Jones pastors in Greenville, S.C. Ray, an internist with Cypress Internal Medicine-
Patewood in Greenville, addressed confusion, fears and what people should know about 
COVID-19.
The interview had more than 1,800 views within 24 hours.
"Dana has been a great friend, doctor, frat brother and uncle to my children (Jones' daughter 
Aaliyah Jones graduated from Wofford in 2019)," Jones says. "He's been a great source of 
information during this pandemic as well as a focus of our prayer given that he's on the 
frontlines."
Over the years, Ray has participated in community events focused on health and wellness 
while also discussing various health topics on an Upstate radio station. He participated in an 
Instagram Live interview focused on COVID-19 with a prominent radio personality earlier in 
the week before talking to Jones.
"I am definitely passionate about sharing information," Ray says. "In this current
pandemic, I feel as though my mission is to provide the best quality care to my patients as 
well as provide up-to-date and accurate information about the coronavirus to as many as I 
can. Hopefully, by doing so, I can do my part to alleviate fears and to educate the community 
on ways to decrease the spread of the virus."
The broadcast was their first together, but they plan to do more as the need arises.
"Pastor Jones has a strong presence in our community, and he knows that anytime he calls I 
will answer," Ray said.

Leadership in environmental design
Wofford College's new Chandler Center for Environmental Studies has received 
certification that recognizes it for demonstrating leadership in energy, water and 
environmental efficiency by the Green Globes Certification program. The center, which is 
named for Delores and Harold Chandler '71, was completed in time for the 2020-21 
academic year. Read more. 
Influencer
Sami Bernstein '17 and her brother were profiled by Forbes for their social shopping app, 
Kickback. Bernstein is chief marketing officer for their company, which streamlines the 
process of influencers sharing coupon codes with consumers. Kickback is working with major 
brands and spotlighting smaller brands and female-founded companies. Read more in

the most recent examples of the ways that multiple forms 
of inequality intersect to drive and shape unequal 
outcomes in communities of color. Privileged 
communities, separated from these problems by time or 
space, often fail to perceive them at all. 
Race and environmental issues are inextricably linked. As 
scholars of the environment, we recognize that all members 
of our society are indispensable elements of building 
socially and environmentally just and resilient 
communities. It is our mission to show, through our 
teaching and research, the impacts of environmental 
injustice, and paths beyond it. 
We commit to the following actions: 
• Conduct our own research to raise the department’s collective awareness of 
issues that impact communities of color, and Black communities in 
particular. 
• Build anti-racist programs and curriculum, in our department, at our 
college, and within our professional organizations. 
• Create an Environmental Justice course to help others understand the 
rampant environmental injustices facing communities of color. 
• Listen to and amplify historically marginalized voices to gain a fuller 
understanding on all issues.  
• Help our students find their voices to promote and defend the causes they 
believe in. 
• Foster and promote diverse and resilient communities by partnering with 
individuals and organizations that share these goals.

We, the faculty and staff of the Wofford College 
Environmental Studies department, are horrified and 
heartbroken by the centuries of racism, 
marginalization, and repression that have devastated 
communities across America, in particular 
Indigenous, Latinx and Black communities. We 
refuse to be silent.  
Black lives matter. Institutional racism and white 
supremacy are omnipresent, deep-rooted forces that 
must be vehemently and consciously opposed. We 
honor the memories of George Floyd, David McAtee, 
Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland and the many, many 
other victims of senseless racism whose names are 
known and unknown to us. We stand with 
communities of color and all victims of racism and 
injustice.  
Communities of color suffer disproportionately from 
environmental degradation and injustice. Black 
communities are more likely to be exposed to 
environmental hazards like toxic air pollution, 
unhealthy infrastructure, like landfills, and the 
negative impacts of ecological degradation. 
Environmental injustice can be seen in industrial 
contamination in Spartanburg’s Arkwright 
neighborhood, in contaminated drinking water in 
Flint, Michigan, in PCB waste dumping in 
predominantly-Black Warren County, NC, in the 
siting of the Dakota Access Pipeline, and in the 
aftereffects of uranium mining on the Navajo 
Reservation. Unjust actions by law enforcement and 
air pollution’s aggravating effect on Covid-19 are only
