The educators were all very welcoming 
and excited to talk us into taking federal 
jobs in the park’s service when we 
graduated college. Did it work? I guess 
we will find out in a year or two. 
Edward, Reeves, and I were lucky to co-
teach with three separate groups for 2½ 
days. How did we initially feel about 
this? Pretty anxious, but we were really 
able to grow and take bites out of our 
growth avocados throughout this 
process.

Yosemite National Park for Interim of 
2020 to intern with an outdoor 
education program, NatureBridge. A 
professor from Wofford helped us set 
this up (try to guess who it was… he 
worked with NatureBridge when he 
was younger. Thanks, Dr. Brewitt!!!).  
Schools in California and beyond send 
their precious young students to live 
among the ravens and coyotes in 
Yosemite Valley for a week and learn 
about nature in the park. The ages of 
children visiting the park vary. Some 
bring 4th graders while others bring 
their high school seniors. Either way, 
the students are led by an educator all 
week participating in various activities: 
hiking, learning about the Native 
Scenes from Yosemite during January 
2020 Interim.

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Colorado State University – Master of Conservation Leadership 
 
The Warner College of Natural Resources at 
Colorado State University offers a Conservation 
Leadership program that prepares students to 
address complex conservation issues and make a 
difference in the ecosystems of our plant.  
This is an 18-month graduate program that 
incorporates two semesters of coursework and a 
capstone project. The coursework gives students an 
opportunity to learn about the conservation field 
and the capstone project gives them the opportunity 
to apply those skills to real conservation issues. 
The program includes opportunities for 
experiential learning with field trips, workshops, 
and case studies; inter-disciplinary perspectives 
with coursework rooted in the social sciences; 
cohort-based learning where students take all their 
courses together; immersion weeks when regular 
classes are canceled, and students are immersed 
into a conservation topic; connections with real 
world conservation practitioners; and cross-
cultural experiences as most capstone projects are 
completed abroad.  
Colorado State – Conservation Leadership  
Ongoing Job Opportunities in Conservation and Restoration: The Great Basin Institute is a 
nonprofit organization that specializes in conservation and restoration all throughout 
the West. They are currently hiring for over 60 paid positions ranging from ecological 
monitoring, wildlife monitoring, trail maintenance, range land management, and fuels

talk at Wofford is informed by her experiences in collaborative and participatory 
environmental advocacy with students and communities in the US and in India.

Honoring Veterans
In recent years, Wofford College has celebrated Veterans Day the weekend of the college's 
Salute to Service football game in November. Football is delayed until the spring, but the 
college's ROTC program ensured the day was commemorated by recording a 15-minute 
ceremony.
The ceremony includes a reading of the names of 102 Wofford students and graduates who 
were killed in combat since World War I. The cadets also purchased a brick paver in their 
memory for a walkway outside of American Legion Post 28 at Duncan Park in Spartanburg.

Hipp Lecture Series
The greater Wofford community is invited to join Dr. Dave Gangemi, a leading expert on the 
development of rapid responses to emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19, during 
the Hipp Lecture Series on International Affairs and National Security Town Hall. The 
event will be Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. It will be moderated by Dr. Stefanie Baker, 
professor and associate chair of the Department of Biology at Wofford. Wofford students will 
submit questions after Gangemi's lecture. Join the series via ZOOM.

you will participate in a listening session or share your thoughts in a survey.

The JEDI committee will also host town halls in March and May to share the results of our 
research with the Wofford community. Please see our website for further information on the

John Lane's 'The Pheasant Cage' streaming on demand 
Nov. 16-22
The Spartanburg Little Theatre will stream a staged reading of "The Pheasant Cage: A Play 
in One Act" by Wofford College Professor Emeritus John Lane '77, an award-winning author 
and environmentalist.
Presented and filmed in the style of a staged reading, the play takes place on the eve of an 
impending wedding, as two men stand in a suburban Southern backyard building a pheasant 
cage. Richard, about to marry Jenny, and Carl, about to leave her mother, struggle to define 
their new relationship while wrestling with the shadowy secrets of the past. 
"The Pheasant Cage" runs approximately 35 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some coarse 
language and themes. Tickets are $10 and are available through Nov. 22 on 
Eventbrite.com and spartanburglittletheatre.com. Ticket holders also receive a discount 
code redeemable at Spartanburg's Hub City Book Store for 10% (nonmembers) or 20%

Wofford's Bonner Scholars collect donations for 
Spartanburg nonprofits
Not everyone will be heading home for the holidays. For some, there's no home to go to.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner and the holidays closing in fast, Wofford's Bonner 
Scholars are doing their part to raise awareness and collect donations for some of 
Spartanburg's most vulnerable citizens. As part of the annual Hunger & Homelessness Week 
campaign, students on Tuesday, Nov. 17, manned information tables and gathered 
donations for St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic and Total Ministries.
"We're primarily asking for food and personal care items," says Marisa Barrera '22, a biology 
and Spanish major from Gaffney, South Carolina, who helped organize Tuesday's events. 
She recently began volunteering at St. Luke's and hopes to stock the organization's food 
pantry. Read more.
Wofford's study abroad program consistently 
maintains high national ranking
Wofford's study abroad program is among the highest-ranked nationally by the Institute of 
International Education. The institute released its annual Open Doors Report Nov. 16. The 
college ranks No. 9 in the percentage of students studying abroad for academic credit, No. 12 
for short-term study abroad and No. 13 for the total number of students studying abroad 
among baccalaureate institutions. Read more.
SC Innovates
A team of Terriers finished second overall in SC Innovates, a state-wide venture pitch contest 
in its first year for student entrepreneurs.
Rivers Clarke '21, an English and studio art major from Columbia, South Carolina, and Drake 
Ives '22, a business economics major from Sumter, South Carolina, pitched their Big Leagues 
Ball Club concept during the contest. Big Leagues Ball Club provides a digital platform that 
allows parents to find and pay student-athletes willing to give sports lessons to children. 
Clarke and Ives won $2,625 with their second-place finish.
Wofford College was well represented in the final round of SC Innovates. Seventy-seven 
teams from 16 South Carolina colleges and universities entered the competition, which came 
to an end Wednesday night with three teams from Wofford reaching the final round of 15. In 
all, 10 Wofford teams entered the contest. Read more.
Wofford excels in latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate
Data
The NCAA has released the latest Graduation Success Rate for all Division I institutions. 
Wofford had 10 of 13 teams post a score of 100, the highest score available. The overall GSR 
for Wofford was a 97, which ranked second in the Southern Conference. Read more.
Four alumni elected to fill vacancies on Wofford's
Board of Trustees
The South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church elected four Wofford 
alumni to fill vacancies on the college's Board of Trustees during a virtual meeting in
October. The election was scheduled for June but was postponed because of the COVID-19 
pandemic.
Thomas L. Bower III '74, R. Howard Coker '85, Dr. English C. Flack '00 and B. Shawan 
Gillians '04 were elected to the board. The new trustees are filling seats vacated by trustees 
whose terms expired in June. Read more.

Wofford for the World
President Nayef Samhat recently announced the launch of a new visioning plan for Wofford 
that will focus on race, diversity, equity and inclusion. A 16-member steering committee 
consisting of students, faculty, staff and trustees has been selected to lead these efforts. The 
committee is charged with reflecting on the college's history and its present in order to 
imagine a future in which the changing demographic landscape and trends in higher 
education will have an increasing impact on Wofford's campus. A draft vision document will be 
shared in February.
In the coming weeks, more information will be presented on how others across the Wofford 
community can join the process. Read President Samhat's message to the campus 
community.
Wofford College Board of Trustees commitment to social
justice
Thoughtful and emotional conversations are taking place among Wofford's students, faculty, 
staff, alumni and friends of the college. Like many institutions in the United States, the college 
is taking a closer look at how it can ensure equal rights for everyone on campus and make all 
associated with Wofford better citizens and an example for others to follow. Please read a 
statement from the college's board of trustees below.
"As trustees of Wofford College, we acknowledge that our college's mission of fostering 
excellence in character, leadership and service to others fundamentally means that Wofford's 
mission cannot be executed without equal rights and opportunity and social justice — on
Wofford's campus and everywhere else in the world. We are committed to investing our time 
and our resources in ways that will cultivate greater awareness of the damage that racism, 
bigotry, hatred and the other progeny of inequality and social injustice continue to cause 
throughout the world. This commitment includes making prevention of this damage an 
imperative. Fundamentally, this commitment is a call to action to go beyond the work that 
Wofford has undertaken in the past. Wofford's commitment to continuous, diligent and 
intentional action will enable this board and the college's faculty, staff and students to lead 
transformational initiatives that will make our college and each of us examples of how the 
world can change — for the greater good, for everyone."
Wofford's 2020 Hall of Fame Class
Former Wofford College student-athletes Maggie Bosley '14, Karl Cochran '15, Rob Galloway 
'15 and Forrest Lasso '15 have been selected by the Hall of Fame Committee of the Wofford 
College Terrier Club Board of Directors as the 2020 inductees into the college's Athletics Hall 
of Fame. In addition, the Hall of Fame will honor Converse Draper as the Distinguished 
Service Award recipient and Mary Ann Phillips with an Honorary Letter. A date for the Hall of 
Fame induction ceremony will be announced later. Read more about this year's class.
COVID-19 funds available to help with Wofford bill
Wofford College trustees and alumni have generously established the ForWofford Students 
2020 Fund to assist students and their families with additional financial aid for the fall. The 
fund's resources will be allotted to those who have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 
pandemic and its unanticipated financial impact: job loss, business disruptions and other 
financial and health-related hardships.
Students seeking assistance are asked to complete the application by Thursday, July 30 for 
priority consideration. Detailed information should be provided relating to loss of income 
specifically related to the pandemic. The application is available at

by July 30 will receive notification by Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Suggested reading from Sandor Teszler Library
The library is closed for renovations, but library staff will continue hosting circulation services 
in Daniel Building Room 221 on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. CLICK HERE to 
request books. The following books are focused on feminism and its role in contributing to 
social change.
Bad Feminist by Roxanne Gay explores if one can be a feminist while enjoying anti-feminist 
pop culture in a series of autobiographical essays.
Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches by Audre Lorde is a classic in feminist writing that 
investigates how Lorde's various identities—Black, lesbian, mother, feminist—are social 
differences that can be used to bring about social change. This 1984 collection of essays is 
frequently used in classrooms today.
We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is based on a TED Talk of the 
same name. Adichie offers a compact and accessible argument that all people would benefit 
by embracing feminism.

Murphy named to top 100 list
Storm Murphy '21 was named to Making the Madness Mid-Major Top 100 Players list for the 
upcoming 2020-21 season. Last season, Murphy averaged 11.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.6 
assists per game last season. He was one of five Southern Conference men's basketball 
players selected for the list.

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond won a Pulitzer 
Prize in 2017. Desmond, a sociologist, lived with families in one of the poorest neighborhoods 
in Milwaukee to explore how the 2008 financial crisis deepened economic hardships for 
families, leading to housing instability in great numbers. 
Nickel and Dimed: On (not) Getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich, an investigative 
journalist who takes a series of unskilled labor jobs to explore how welfare reform affected the 
lives of people working minimum wage jobs. 
Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance is about the world 
of the white, rural poor of Appalachia, a region that has gone from heavily Democrat to solidly 
Republican in past decades. Vance theorizes that both government policy and personal 
choice have led to a cycle of poverty.
Office of Diversity & Inclusion Antiracism Teach-in Series
Wofford's Office of Diversity and Inclusion is hosting four upcoming virtual teach-ins promoting 
antiracism training. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college are invited to 
participate. All events are free.
#BlackLivesMatter and #SayHerName: Social media testimony as a political tool
Tuesday, July 14 at 1 p.m.
This discussion will operate as a testimony, archive and political activist tool. Historical forms 
of Black witnessing and the extraordinary power and relevance of contemporary social media 
movements as political activism will be discussed. RSVP and find required readings

Tweets, DMs and hashtags: Social media for social change
Thursday, July 16 at 1 p.m.
This discussion will offer tools and skills that challenge white supremacy and mobilize 
communities for action to resist silencing strategies. There will also be some discussion of 
social media activism at Wofford and the safe spaces that were created to allow for Wofford's 
Black community to share their testimonies through the Black at Wofford Instagram account.

How did we get here? Monuments, memory and memorials

This conversation will examine the history of Confederate memorials and offer background on 
the call to remove these symbols. Panelists will include Dr. Felice Knight, assistant professor 
of African American history at The Citadel; Dr. Kim Rostan, associate professor of English at 
Wofford; and Brad Steinecke, assistant director of local history with the Spartanburg County 
Public Libraries. This event includes an optional 30-minute discussion immediately following

Moving forward: Honoring memory by renaming and removing white supremacy 
Thursday, July 30 at 1 p.m.
Three activists and scholars, who led efforts to rename buildings tied to prominent figures who 
are considered racists, will discuss their work. The panelists are: Jerad Greene, associate 
director for multicultural programs at Clemson University; Brandon Inabinet, associate 
professor of communication studies at Furman University; and Derek Alderman, professor of 
geography at the University of Tennessee. Wofford's Jessica Scott-Felder, assistant professor 
of studio art, will show art that celebrates and memorializes Black life in the United States.

Holy Days
The first text that appeared in my Messages this morning was from a recent Wofford 
graduate. It included a photograph of a steaming bowl of soup, and the message said simply, 
“Hope you are doing well during this scary time, Rev. Ron.” I was moved by the 
thoughtfulness, and as I looked more closely at the photograph, I noticed words printed on 
the outside of the soup bowl. The words were “A Simple Meal, Wofford College.”
One of our holy times on campus is a weekly gathering in which there is a brief service of 
worship with music and a brief sermon by a student or me as the chaplain. I then offer 
communion for those who wish to receive or a blessing for those who prefer that. We light 
candles as we offer personal prayers, and we place the candles in a large, sand-filled 
container. Following the service, we gather for a simple meal of soup, bread and 
conversation. It is mostly a Christian experience, but we have student attendees from a 
variety of faith traditions and some from no particular faith. We enjoy being together and 
learning from and about each other. When students graduate, we give them a soup bowl to 
take with them.
We are now in the midst of holy days for Christians and Jews, and Muslims will begin their 
holiest time later this month. I miss being on campus these days. We have Holy Week events 
for Christians, including Maundy Thursday communion and a labyrinth walk and a Good 
Friday Procession of the Cross through campus. We also have an annual Passover meal, led 
by our Jewish students. We have an Eid al-Fitr meal whenever its date coincides with the 
academic year.
The first year we held the Passover meal, the number of Jewish students was small and they 
asked for help putting together the celebration so they could offer it to the campus. Very 
quickly the Muslim Student Association and an evangelical Christian group pitched in to 
assist. All were participants in the Passover celebration. It was a religious event for our 
Jewish community and an educational event for our larger college community. Students 
brought friends and some faculty and staff brought children.  People who were just curious 
showed up. I remember looking around the gathering and thinking, “I wish the world could be 
this way.”
We have many religious traditions represented on campus, and we have folk who identify with 
no religious or spiritual tradition at all. When we are at our best, we learn from and support 
each other. In my role as chaplain, I see on a regular basis people offering love and care and 
respect for each other across identities and differences.
Come Sunday, I’ll celebrate Easter at home for the first time ever. It will be a holy day — one 
that, as a child, I used to refer to as the “most holiest” just to make sure its importance was 
emphasized. When I offer my prayers to God, I’ll give thanks for the promises of Easter, and 
I’ll give thanks for this beloved Wofford community. I’ll remember especially our students who 
take time to create deep friendships across differences. And I’ll remember the recent grad, the 
former president of our Muslim Student Association, who reached out today to show me that 
she still uses her soup bowl and that she remembers the relationships forged here on 
campus. She and I have different holy days. But today, in some manner I can’t fully explain, 
we shared one. We share love and care and respect.  
I wish the world could be that way.
Collins conquers and prevails while deployed to the Middle East
Dr. Christopher Collins ’95, a dentist in Greenwood, S.C., has been deployed with his 
S.C. Air National Guard unit to the Middle East. When COVID-19 hit, however, his 
deployment was extended, and he is now on the public health team addressing 
coronavirus issues while supplying emergency dental care for soldiers. He is even 
helping serve meals when needed. Back home, Dr. Josh Fennell ’98 and Dr. Lang 
Foster ’90 have helped cover Collins’ practice and are now helping with emergency 
cases while all of their private practices are closed because of the pandemic.
“Even with all this on his plate, Christopher stays in good spirits taking things one 
day at a time,” says Elise Rogers Collins ’93. They met at Wofford in 1991, were 
married in 2000 and now have three children, Dawsey, Emma and Lily. “His positive 
perspective sets the tone for his family, who miss him and love him. We are so 
proud of him. And we know that God will bring good out of all this. Like we used to 
sing with Dr. Vic Bilanchone and Mr. Gary McCraw ’77, ‘conquer and prevail,’ and we
don’t do it alone.”
Old Main lit blue to draw attention to autism
During the month of April, Old Main is lit each evening in blue in observance of National
Autism Awareness month.

My team and I are developing a 
business for an entrepreneurship class 
project. We would love it if you could 
provide some customer feedback by just 
answering this one question regarding 
our product. The product, called a 
ShellPack, is marketed predominantly 
towards outdoor enthusiasts and is a 
medium-sized, lightweight hiking 
backpack with an attachable umbrella 
folded up on the bottom of the bag. By 
un-velcroing some straps, it is designed 
to be pulled up over your bag and head 
to become a hands-free, UV protective, 
durable umbrella.

season – have an otter, an animal I have 
never seen in Duncan Park before, 
popping up in the little wetland above the 
lake. I wonder how it got here.  
It helps, of course, that it’s spring. 
Everywhere else I’ve lived, spring’s the 
worst season, full of mud and gross 
weather and angry insects, but here, it is 
the best season, one of my favorite things 
about Spartanburg. The flowers start early, 
and the temperature lets us eat on the 
porch. When Penny and Lupin and I went 
for a nature walk (this is homeschooling 
ENVS-style) we found all the colors of the 
rainbow represented in nature before we 
got to the end of the block. While I 
wholeheartedly wish that life would be 
more ordinary, I am grateful for the 
opportunity, enforced though it is, to be 
present in this space, and to get to pay 
close attention to my own little corner of 
the ever-changing world. 
In this odd season, as we all find 
ourselves stuck in place, we have, it 
seems, been forced to think bigger and 
smaller than we usually do. The bigger 
part is obvious – I haven’t had to consider 
richer and poorer or sickness and health 
this much since my wedding vows – but I 
find myself valuing the smaller and 
subtler details of quarantine life.  
These days I spend nearly all my time in 
the Duncan Park neighborhood, a couple 
miles south of campus. It’s a nice but 
commonplace spot, a mid-century 
development built around a New Deal 
artificial lake, with high faculty 
biodiversity. Over the past few weeks, it 
has been bursting with nature. We have a 
flock of feral Muscovy Ducks with their 
strange bumpy red faces paddling in 
amongst the assertive Canada geese. We 
have turtles, packed in shell by shell, on 
every log. We even – the highlight of the

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
University of Utah – Environmental Humanities 
 
The environmental humanities program at The 
University of Utah is a 2-year post baccalaureate 
degree concentrating on the humanities perspective and 
how it intersects with and influences public policy, 
scientific, legal, industrial, and corporate concerns.   
The university offers a unique opportunity to use this 
western landscape for field study and research at their 
Taft-Nicholson Center in Salt Lake City.  Their 
mission is to bridge the arts and humanities with the 
sciences while promoting environmental awareness 
and personal connections in nature. 
Both MA and MS degrees are available. The MA 
requires an approved language component and the 
MS requires three research methods courses. 
The three options for completing this degree include 
a thesis, project, or non-thesis with varying 
requirements for course work hours. 
 
University of Utah – Environmental Humanities  
 
Ongoing Summer Courses through University of Montana: A 3-week Wilderness Policy and Packing 
course (June8-26) and a 5-day Wilderness Pack Trip (June29-July3) combine to a 4-week, 
5-credit summer course in wilderness policy and horse/mule packing and learning how to 
travel the wilderness with horses and mules and maintain trails in the Bob Marshall 
Wilderness Complex. Scholarships available.

Thriving Earth Exchange Community Science Fellowship: Fellows are matched with a 
community and are responsible for guiding a community science project from idea to 
impact. This includes getting to know the community, identifying ways science can 
advance community goals, finding and recruiting partner scientists to assemble a 
project team, managing and supporting the project, and helping share the team’s story 
and project impact. Fellows are trained and receive ongoing support from AGU 
Thriving Earth Exchange staff, including a dedicated community science mentor, and a
