Just Tri It
Students in the Just Tri It Interim class got into the outdoor pool at the Willis Road YMCA on 
a 54-degree morning in April and their discomfort was soon audible.
“Oh my God, it’s so cold,” one could be heard saying.
Each had personal motivation for diving into the class. Some were athletes looking for a new 
challenge, while others were seeking time away from the sofa.
Triathlons have been part of Dawson Henis’ life since childhood. The senior business 
economics major from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, watched his dad compete in Ironman 
competitions, and the family would take trips to different states where his dad competed.
“I promised my dad I would do an Ironman with him once I finished school and my football 
career, and that time has finally come. So, I took this course to begin preparing for that,” says 
Henis, who competed in youth triathlons in elementary school before focusing on football and 
soccer.
Ben Cartwright, associate professor of accounting, and Dr. Jeremy Morris, assistant 
professor of biology, are teaching the course for the first time this Interim. Cartwright has 
competed in eight triathlons since taking up the sport in 2014. Morris has been a non-
competitive runner and a rock climber for many years, and he focuses on meditation and
yoga.
They came up with the idea for the Just Tri It course a few years ago during a conversation
about exercise and the physiology of exercise. Cartwright is the triathlon expert for the class,
and Morris has expertise in physiology and an interest in the biology of exercise.

Dr. English Chapman Flack visits with Terriers
Dr. English Chapman Flack ’00, a pediatric cardiologist and assistant professor at Vanderbilt 
University Children’s Hospital and medical director of Project ADAM, participated in a webinar 
with students. She discussed how she chose Wofford, her experiences at the college, 
medical school and her career. She’s also a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. The 
webinar was part of a series that’s giving students an opportunity to connect with Wofford 
trustees and learn more about their careers. The series kicked off with Craig Melvin ’01. Click

Terrier StartUp Challenge is in its 5th year
Students competing in the 2019 Terrier StartUp Challenge pitch their business concept to the 
competition’s judges. The 2021 Terrier StartUp Challenge takes place virtually on Thursday, May 6.
Fourteen teams of Terriers with entrepreneurial spirits are preparing to pitch their ideas for 
businesses ranging from a digital payment and scheduling platform to connect the families of 
youth athletes with coaches for one-on-one training, to environmentally friendly interior design 
approaches, to a clothing resale app.
The fifth annual Terrier StartUp Challenge takes place Thursday, May 6 and will be held 
virtually. Each team will get three minutes to pitch their idea to three judges and compete for 
their share of $10,000 in start-up funding. Register for the event.
Fans can vote for their favorite concept through the Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation’s 
Instagram account. The fan favorite will win a $500 award.
“Watching students put in work for the event and seeing them present their finished pitch is a 
fun process,” says Tyler Senecal, director of entrepreneurship and innovation in Wofford 
College’s Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation. “For most of our students, this is their first 
time pitching an idea for a new venture. It takes bravery and commitment to pitch in the Terrier 
StartUp Challenge. In just a matter of weeks, students go from having an initial idea to being 
able to pitch a compelling business opportunity. It’s very cool to see them working through this 
process, I'm especially proud of everyone for how they've rallied during such a challenging 
time in our world.”

Wofford has announced its 2021 football schedule, including the dates for Family Weekend

Lifelong Learning
Registration for the summer term of Lifelong Learning begins Saturday, May 1, and lasts 
through May 26. Lifelong Learning’s summer term is May 26-July 1. The term’s catalog 
includes one-day events, four-week classes, in-person classes and classes via Zoom. Find 
the complete list of classes and events. Lifelong Learning is intended for adult students to 
enjoy extracurricular learning without worrying about grades or diplomas. Summer classes are 
open to members and non-members. Scholarships are available.

The landscape of the Pantanal in Brazil. 
 
and cattle weights, while reducing impacts 
in aquatic and forest habitats. Connecting 
small-holder rural communities with 
ranchers needing to restore stream riparian 
vegetation, we set up a native seed 
collection network that is boosting family 
incomes for the collectors and helping to 
maintain stream flows and water quality 
for the region. 
Discoveries from monitoring work include 
cattle-driven nutrient loading “tipping 
points” that cause abrupt shifts in the 
waterbird and aquatic communities of 
unique alkali soda lakes in the Pantanal, 
alterations of wildlife and fruiting tree 
communities due to cattle activity in 
forests and wetland plant importance for 
large herds of white-lipped peccaries 
during seasonal fruit-scarcity periods. I 
hope to share some of these findings with 
my Earth System Science students in the 
ENVS program.  
  
Dr. Eaton is our adjunct professor teaching 
ENVS 150 this semester while Dr. Bradham 
is on leave. 
 
 
 
I’m an aquatic ecologist and conservation 
biologist from the US, but I’ve been 
working in central-western Brazil’s 
Pantanal, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest 
biomes along with my wildlife biologist 
wife for the last 28 years. Despite a 
century of agricultural expansion, the 3 
biomes remain valued internationally for 
their conservation importance: the 
Pantanal for its largely intact seasonal 
wetlands, the Cerrado for its biodiverse 
savanna-forests and the Atlantic Forest 
for its many endemic species. 
My work along with colleagues to 
preserve native habitat, biodiversity and 
ecosystem services involves baseline 
monitoring of aquatic and wildlife 
communities, experimenting with 
innovative land use practices and 
collaborating with ranchers, farmers, and 
rural communities to apply results to 
conservation solutions. Our experimental 
rotational grazing system for native

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Auburn University – School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences 
     Auburn University offers several graduate degrees 
in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences 
(SFWS) including forestry, natural resources, and 
wildlife sciences.  Areas of research interest include 
forest biology, ecology forest management, wildlife 
ecology and management.   
     As a research facility, Auburn has several outdoor 
classrooms in addition to its SFWS building on the 
University’s main campus.  Kreher Preserve and 
Nature Center is a 120-acre property that offers 
students opportunities to conduct research, lead hikes, 
help with educational programs, or learn different 
aspects of park management.  The Mary Olive 
Thomas Demonstration Forest is a 400-acre property 
that is used to develop recreation or education 
management plans and conduct fire behavior plans.  
The Dixon Center is a 5300-acre outdoor classroom 
and program venue with options for overnight 
accommodations and is used for summer practicum.  
Weagle Woods is an 11-acre tract on campus that 
students have used in management projects.

Comprehensive Plan update process. The City has hired a multidisciplinary team of 
planning consultants led by Town Planning & Urban Design Collaborative, LLC 
(TPUDC) to engage the community in a public planning process that will culminate in 
the adoption of a new Comprehensive Plan with equity as its foundational principle. This

Tricks and Treats at Goodall

Halloween activities included an art station, animal bones station, a scavenger 
hunt, and reptiles from the Spartanburg Science Center. 
 
many parents and children out at the 
Goodall Center. 
Our Outreach program targets the 
Glendale and Spartanburg communities. 
Our Halloween celebration was a great 
way to invite faculty and their children as 
well as families from the Spartanburg 
community to our beautiful Goodall 
Environmental building!  
Each month we host a fun community-
centered event. This November we are 
looking forward to hosting a day camp for 
kids at Glendale. It has been great sharing 
the Goodall Center with the Wofford and 
Spartanburg community and we thank 
everyone for coming out to the Halloween 
event, it was a blast! 
 
 
 
Last weekend the Goodall Environmental 
Outreach program hosted a Halloween 
event for the community. This was the 
second event our program has held at the 
Goodall Environmental Center at 
Glendale, and it was a great success!  
In the Halloween spirit, we invited kids 
and their families to come in costume to 
experience Glendale in a fun and 
educational way. We were lucky to 
partner with the Spartanburg Science 
Center who brought reptiles for the kids 
to see and learn about. This was a great 
opportunity to add to the Halloween 
theme while also providing an 
educational opportunity!  
We also had a bone activity where the 
children were able to have hands-on 
experiences learning about the anatomy 
of many animals! Our other activities 
included a Glendale Scavenger hunt and 
an art station. Even the labyrinth at 
Glendale was made into a station which 
the kids loved. It was great to see so

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Tufts University – MS in Sustainable Water Management 
Tufts University’s professional master’s degree in 
Sustainable Water Management (SWM) is a 12-month 
program that prepares students for professional careers 
in the water sector.  
Students can choose between four program tracks in 
Water Diplomacy; Water Infrastructure for Human 
Settlements; Water, Food, and Energy; and WASH in 
International Development and Humanitarian 
Response. This chosen track will direct the student’s 
secondary coursework and summer practicum.  
With over five decades as a center of environmental 
leadership, Tufts has cultivated a dedicated water 
studies program that includes faculty and experts that 
collaborate with academic and real-world settings. 
The SWM degree continues to expand the water 
conversations at Tufts with a new and exciting 
opportunity for students which enables them to 
pursue a variety of futures within the water 
discipline.

Seek and Ye Shall Find

Students John Farrell, Sarah Peak, and Wilson Grayson organized an oyster roast for Dr. Telligman’s 
ENVS 313 Sustainable Food Systems class on Thursday while learning about sustainability in seafood. 
 
through a guidebook. Now we can just 
point our phones at it. Inspired, I had 
my Humanities 101 class download it 
(it’s free) and take it out to Glendale a 
few days later. We assembled a 
formidable list of trees and shrubs, and 
got to talk about biodiversity, invasive 
species, and future management armed 
with information we’d gathered 
ourselves on the spot. Going forward, 
we could link such activities with 
iNaturalist, which Seek come from, and 
be part of a massive effort to record and 
share the natural world. 
Now, Seek is not perfect – it doesn’t 
work as well in the shade or the wind, 
sometimes only identifying family or 
genus, and occasionally it gets answers 
wrong. But one thing about apps like 
this – they are only likely to get smarter 
as more people use them more. Try it 
out! 
 
 
 
 
 
Last week, as Environmental Studies 
101 hiked across Lake Conestee Nature 
Preserve, I suddenly heard my students 
all a-twitter with excitement. Look! 
Look! Up there! We all stopped and 
after a little scanning around I saw a big 
hawk perched in a tree just above our 
heads. 
I have always been terrible at 
identifying raptors, and I couldn’t be 
sure of this one, so what did I do? I got 
out my phone, opened the Seek 
application, and aimed it at the bird. A 
few seconds later the word came 
through – red-shouldered hawk. 
Awesome. We looked for a few more 
minutes and went on with our hike. 
Most of us, I think, enjoy being outside 
but barely know what we’re seeing. We 
may know some of the common trees, 
or tree types, or songbirds, but not 
much else. If we want to know what 
we’re seeing, we have to bring and page

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
Columbia University – MS in Sustainability Science 
The Earth Institute at Columbia University is a global 
leader in the study of sustainability.  One of the many 
degree programs offered is a Master of Science in 
Sustainability Science and can be completed as a full-
time or part-time student. The program teaches cutting 
edge scientific methods and is a pioneer in the use of 
technology that collects real-time data worldwide. 
The program is best suited to students with 
undergraduate degrees in engineering, math, and 
science, who want to pursue technical sustainability 
careers. Students must take a capstone workshop in 
sustainability science instead of submitting a thesis. 
Graduates will be technical practitioners, who know 
environmental science, modeling, and engineering, 
but who are not research experts. Their job and the 
goal is to bring these disciplines together to address 
sustainability problems. Future careers could involve 
management positions in environmental technologies, 
monitoring, engineering, and compliance.
