Homecoming recognition
Five alumni will be recognized by the Wofford College Alumni Association this weekend.
Terriers will return to Wofford College’s campus this weekend to celebrate homecoming and
five will be honored by the college’s alumni association for leadership and service.
Bryan Blair ’07 of Pullman, Washington, deputy director of athletics and chief operating
officer in the athletics department at Washington State University, will be awarded the Pride
of Wofford Award; Rex Maynard ’69 of Belton, South Carolina, owner of Maynard’s Home
Furnishings, will be given the Charles H. Gray ’72 Distinguished Service Award; Margaret
Deans Fawcett Grantz ’13 of Columbia, South Carolina, a co-founder and director of
development for a nonprofit, will receive a Rising Star Award; Caitlynn Myer ’18 of
Spartanburg, a Limestone University professor and program coordinator, is receiving a
Rising Star Award; and David Britt ’77 of Spartanburg, a vice president for Tindall Corp. and
a Spartanburg County Councilman, will be given the Distinguished Citizen Award.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony Saturday, Oct. 16 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at The
Pavilion on campus.

Lasting legacies
Doug Jones ’69, the first Black student to graduate from Wofford, poses with his son, Jarvis Jones ’04,

Hayden Jones ’25 sees a lot of people who look like him when he walks across the Wofford
College campus. That wasn’t the case for his grandfather, Doug Jones ’69, the first Black
student to graduate from Wofford.
“It’s nice to see faces like mine and to have people to turn to when we’re going through
struggles,” says Hayden Jones, an undeclared major from Honea Path, South Carolina.
The Jones family attended the Order of 1854 Heritage Society brunch on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The society celebrates students who are direct descendants of a Wofford graduate. The
brunch honored the 126 legacy students in the classes of 2024 and 2025.
Hayden Jones is a third-generation Terrier. His aunt, Moneefa Jones ’95, and uncle, Jarvis
Jones ’04, also are Wofford graduates.
Doug Jones was the second Black student to attend Wofford, joining Albert Gray, who came
in 1964. When Gray left to fight in the Vietnam War, Jones was on his own for two years.
“It means a lot to me to have him here,” Jones says. “Things were a lot different when I was
here. But I got a good education. I owe Wofford a lot.”
Hayden Jones says he’s driven to uphold the family’s tradition of success. The enormity of
the shadow cast by Doug Jones isn’t lost on him.
“My grandfather is a pretty big deal at this college,” he says. “That’s a hell of a lot of
pressure. He said I didn’t have to come here, but I felt like I did.”

The HBO documentary series “We’re Here” highlights the bond between brothers Pat Patterson ’92 and
Olin Patterson, a former Wofford employee, in the second-season premiere.

Pat Patterson ’92 has donned flowing gowns and flowing wigs and entertained people under
the name Patti O’Furniture for 22 years.
For one night this past May, his brother, Olin Patterson, a former Wofford employee, slipped
into a dress and joined him on stage.
The bond between the brothers and the preparation leading up to that performance was one
of the storylines on the second-season premiere of the HBO documentary series “We’re
Here” on Monday, Oct. 11. Pat Patterson hosted a public viewing, attended by about 200
people, at Barnet Park in Spartanburg. The episode can be viewed on the HBO Max app.
“That was a huge act of generosity and love,” Pat says of Olin’s participation. “It shows how
much my little brother loves me.”

Wofford partners with e-scooter company
Wofford is the fifth college campus in the United States to have an agreement with Blue Duck scooters.
Blue Duck scooters are available on Wofford’s campus. The e-scooter company made its
debut in Spartanburg earlier this year. Now, scooters can be found at Wofford for travel
across campus or around downtown.
