Persimmon 
All we need to know is told 
by the fruiting persimmon tree. 
Root and crown in unison 
puppeteering 
the cream of creation 
quietly, 
walking to summit.  
Skeletal branches 
lift the sunrise fruit 
shiny and round 
a blind man’s hand around a doorknob, 
a door to every day’s gift 
sometimes only one 
often not in plain sight, 
but sometimes 
as obvious and perfect 
as persimmon. 
 
I graduated from Wofford College in 2016 
with Environmental Studies and Biology 
majors, ready to become lithic scatter to the 
South Carolina piedmont. Craving new 
trails, my first fresh footprint was in New 
Orleans, LA, where I began a PhD in 
ecology and evolutionary biology at Tulane 
University. The trail has been winding and 
wonderous over the last six years, moving 
through the forests of Panama, Puerto 
Rico, and Ecuador. In these places, I spend 
time digging up fine roots of trees and 
collecting soil for study of underground 
mycorrhizal networks. Yet, re-encounters 
with third landscapes, groundwater 
hydrology maps, Werner Herzog films, 
Wendell Berry’s poetry, and debates on 
wildness and tipping points make me 
realize how much the ENVS department 
enriched my experience as an individual in 
this world. Our discussions did leave the 
walls of the Black Science Annex and have 
served as navigation tools and as gifts ever 
since. It may take some time for the things 
you learn now as undergraduates to be 
recognized as gifts. The ones that reveal 
themselves later tend to be the most 
special. I saw, touched, and tasted my first 
Sanchez is currently a PhD candidate at Tulane University in New 
Orleans.

Goodall Visiting Fellow Artist Talk: Eric William Carroll will give a talk on his work in 
photography, science, and nature as it explores the differences in how we experience, 
organize, and represent the world. Through his photographs, installations, and 
performances, Carroll creates visual and emotional connections that span enormous 
distances in space and time. As the Fall 2022 Goodall Visiting Fellow, Carroll is 
participating in Wofford's Long Term Environmental Reflection project at Glendale 
Shoals Preserve.

Presidential libraries
Mia Kilpatrick ʼ22 visited 10 U.S. presidential libraries for an independent study project. She wanted to see
how the libraries captured the legacies of presidents.

Mia Kilpatrick ʼ22 spent Interim on a 6,000-mile road trip to 10 U.S. presidential libraries. Her
research took her from Atlanta, Georgia, to West Branch, Iowa, and as far north as Boston,
Massachusetts.
“My research centered around the question of whether presidential libraries reflect the legacy
of the presidents,” says Kilpatrick, an international affairs and Spanish major from Hartsville,
South Carolina. “For example, Nixon doesnʼt have a great legacy. How would his library
compare to someone like Reagan or Roosevelt?” 
She found a common theme among libraries.
“I was also curious what each library would choose to emphasize about the presidentʼs
legacy,” Kilpatrick says. “I noticed that most libraries stressed the presidentʼs environmental
activism in one way or another, which is interesting because that seems like something that
we care more about now than we would have at the time that these presidents were in office.”
Dr. David Alvis, associate professor of government and international affairs, was Kilpatrickʼs
faculty advisor.
“Miaʼs Interim project was one of the most impressive independent projects that I have ever
had the honor of overseeing,” Alvis says. “Not only was her project intellectually interesting
and rigorous, but she achieved quite a physical feat in covering a vast geographical expanse
of presidential libraries.”

Dorroll named ACE Fellow
Dr. Courtney Dorroll, associate professor of religion and coordinator of Wofford Collegeʼs Middle Eastern
and North African Studies Program, is one of 46 people from across the United States selected to be an
American Council on Education Fellow.
The American Council on Education (ACE) has named Dr. Courtney Dorroll an ACE Fellow
for the 2022-23 academic year. The program is designed to strengthen leadership in U.S.
higher education by identifying and preparing faculty and staff for senior positions in college
and university administration.
Dorroll, associate professor of religion and coordinator of Wofford College’s Middle
Eastern and North African Studies Program, is one of 46 fellows selected for ACE’s
2022-23 cohort. Fellows are nominated by the senior administration of their college or
university.
“I am honored to have been awarded this opportunity to grow and come back to Wofford with
innovative ideas to help Wofford with capacity building projects,” Dorroll says. “I aspire to
grow and return stronger to help our community reach new heights.”
About 2,500 higher education leaders have participated in the ACE Fellows Program since it
was established in 1965. More than 80% of fellows have gone on to serve as senior leaders
of higher education institutions. Dorroll is Woffordʼs third ACE Fellow since 2017.

Conour featured on CBS
U.S. Army Capt. Sabastian Conour ʼ13 was on leave in Poland when Russiaʼs invasion of
Ukraine began. He had a trip to Ireland planned and canceled it so he could book hotel rooms
in Przemysl, a Polish town near the Ukranian border, for those fleeing Ukraine. Watch the

Postseason basketball
Woffordʼs womenʼs and menʼs basketball teams are competing in postseason tournaments. The womenʼs
team will begin competition tonight at Middle Tennessee State University. The menʼs team is competing in
the inaugural Basketball Classic.
Woffordʼs womenʼs basketball team will make its first postseason tournament appearance in
the NCAA Division I era tonight when it plays Middle Tennessee State University in the
Womenʼs National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) at 9 p.m. Find more information,

Former Terriers lead Virginia Tech
Three former Terriers and a Wofford commitment led Virginia Tech to the Atlantic Coast
Conference (ACC) Championship and a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Menʼs Basketball
Tournament.
Those watching last Saturdayʼs ACC championship game heard plenty about Wofford and
many media outlets have detailed Coach Mike Youngʼs three decades as a Wofford assistant
and head menʼs basketball coach. Hunter Cattoor, who committed to Wofford before following
Young to Virginia Tech, scored 31 points in the ACC title game. Keve Aluma transferred from
Wofford to Virginia Tech, and he had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the title
game. Storm Murphy ʼ21 took advantage of a fifth year of eligibility by pursuing a graduate
degree at Virginia Tech. Legendary Duke University Coach Mike Krzyzewski described how
everything the Hokies did “really starts with the energy that Murphy gives them.”

Women’s History Month
The Wofford College Alumni Association recently interviewed alumnae Tiawanna Billups ʼ97,
Whitney Howard ʼ98, Elizabeth Sheehan ʼ08 and Meredith Dark ʼ10, who discussed how they
chose Wofford, their careers and skills they gained at the college.  
The collegeʼs next Womenʼs History Month event is Dr. Tracy Revels, professor of history,
presenting “ʻA Very Thorough Ladyʼ: The Complicated Life of Ellen Call Long” at 6 p.m. on
March 21 in Olin Theater.

Richardson Hall is featured in the March/April issue of “Talking Stick,” a publication by the Association of
College & University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I).
The collegeʼs newest residence hall, Jerome Johnson Richardson Hall, is featured in the 
March/April issue of “Talking Stick,” a publication by the Association of College & University 
Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I). Allen Lollis ʼ15, assistant dean of students for 
residence life and community standards, was interviewed for the article.
“Richardson Hall offers a mix of modern housing for Woffordʼs first-year students and 
athletics facilities for baseball, softball and golf,” Lollis says. “There are spaces for students to 
gather, cook and study. The building includes porches with views of the historic campus and 
soccer and baseball fields. The building receives plenty of natural light and is located close to 
campus dining, the wellness center, campus safety, the post office and other first-year 
housing.”

Offering context and enlightenment
Wigginton and National Civil Rights Museum talk highlight Black History Month observances at Wofford
College
Dr. Russell Wigginton travels through the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, each workday to
the historic Lorraine Motel. A welcome stop for Black travelers during the Jim Crow era, it
was also the site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Wigginton is president of the National Civil Rights Museum, and he will kick off Wofford
College’s Black History Month commemoration with a talk, “Journey to Justice: Why the
National Civil Rights Museum Matters,” and conversations with Wofford students about
sharing authentic stories about Black experiences.
Wigginton will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2 in Wofford’s Leonard Auditorium in
Main Building. The event is free and open to the public.
“The National Civil Rights Museum just celebrated its 30-year anniversary,” says Wigginton.
“I’ll speak a little about how the museum came to be after Dr. King was assassinated.”
Wigginton will introduce the college and Spartanburg communities to the context that led to
the civil rights era, some of the artifacts and resources available at the museum and a few of
the lesser-known events and heroes of the movement. He’ll also talk about the museum’s
future.

Taking the stage
The Pulp Theatre production of “The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls” hits the stage at 8 p.m. Thursday
through Saturday (Jan. 27-29) in the Sallenger Sisters Black Box Theatre inside the Rosalind Sallenger
Richardson Center for the Arts.

When the set designer, lighting director and the villain in Pulp Theatre’s production of “The
Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls” have a meeting, Joanna Burgess ’22 does all the talking.
That’s because Burgess, a physics and theatre double major from Clinton, South Carolina,
has all three jobs.
“These are all things I have a passion for, and it’s been really fun,” Burgess says. “It’s been a
lot of work, but we have a great crew that has helped make the vision a reality.”
Pulp Theatre is an Interim project that allows students to take the lead in all aspects of a
production. The four-week term concludes with performances scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday
through Saturday (Jan. 27-29) in the Sallenger Sisters Black Box Theatre inside the Rosalind
Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts. Performances are free and open to the public.

Increasing access and success
Wofford is one of eight institutions selected to participate in the inaugural round of the American Talent
Initiative’s Promising Practice Accelerator.
Amid a pandemic that has generated significant uncertainty, Wofford College has maintained
its focus on identifying new ways to ensure talented students from lower-income
backgrounds have the support needed to realize their potential. To support this effort, the
American Talent Initiative has selected Wofford for the inaugural round of its Promising
Practice Accelerator, which is set to launch this month.
The program has funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, and Wofford is one of eight
American Talent Initiative members receiving a $25,000 grant to pilot or expand an initiative
this semester that can transform outcomes for students from lower-income backgrounds.
“Wofford College looks forward to piloting a program that will support keeping talented
students on campus,” says Brand Stille, Wofford’s vice president of enrollment. “Wofford has
long been committed to the personal and academic success of our students, and our work
with the American Talent Initiative will reinforce this commitment on our campus and as we
share best practices with others.”
Wofford will use its five-month grant to pilot an initiative that will incentivize student retention
with $1,000 end-of-semester awards. Fifty students with demonstrated financial need who
have shown academic progress will receive the awards. The grants are designed to offset
gaps in financial aid that contribute to a higher risk of attrition. Rewarding academic success
also is intended to foster a sense of belonging. Eligible students will receive enhancements
each semester as part of their financial aid award through graduation as long as they remain
in good academic standing. If successful, other institutions can use Wofford’s low-cost,
scalable blueprint to increase affordability and retention.

Krick-Aigner’s research recognized
Dr. Kirsten Krick-Aigner, German professor, discussed her research on
the friendship between an American family and an Austrian family and
how the how the Austrian family found refuge in the United States
during the Holocaust.
Jan. 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The day is intended to remember the
victims of the Holocaust. Dr. Kirsten Krick-Aigner, German professor, was recently
interviewed in a Botstiber Institute podcast about an article that she wrote for the Journal of
Austrian-American History. The article focuses on the friendship of two international pen pals
in the early 1930s, during which an American family sponsored a Jewish Viennese girl and
her family. This enabled the Austrian family to flee persecution during the Holocaust and find
refuge in the United States.

Wofford Athletics Hall of Fame
Mary Ann Phillips, Converse Draper, Maggie Bosley ’14, Rob Galloway ’15, Connor Davis
’16, Matt Milburn ’16 and Karl Cochran ’15 were formally inducted into the college’s athletics
hall of fame on Jan. 22. Phillips, Draper, Bosley, Galloway and Cochran were selected as
2020 inductees. Forrest Lasso ’15 also was in the class, but he was unable to attend the
ceremony. Milburn and Davis were 2021 inductees.

Ayers to be inducted in S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame
Former Wofford football coach Mike Ayers is one of four people tabbed for induction in the
South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022. A banquet honoring the class and the
Class of 2020 will be held May 23. Ayers had a 207-139-1 record with the Terriers.

Making Change
In his Nobel Peace Prize address in 1964, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of the 
importance of wiping out poverty.
"No individual or nation can be great if it does not have a concern for 'the least of these,'" 
he said.
Wofford Men of Color put those words into action to aid Spartanburg's homeless population 
as part of the college's MLK week celebration. On Monday, members of the organization 
delivered blankets and personal hygiene items to Miracle Hill Rescue Mission near 
downtown.
"This group was founded primarily to help our community," says Tyrus Peoples '21, a 
government major from Red Bank, South Carolina. "It was clear that the homeless would be 
the best group to help because of the prevalence of COVID and it being the middle of 
winter."

Dr. Michael J. Sosulski, provost of Wofford College, has announced Dean's List students for

Wofford recognized for having the best ROI among South
Carolina's private colleges
Stacker, a website that publishes a range of analyses, published a list of the best private 
colleges in each state with the best return on investment. Wofford College topped the list for 
South Carolina. The list was compiled by researchers at Georgetown University. The college 
with the highest 40-year ROI in each state was selected. See the entire list of colleges.
MLK Events 2021
Wofford's events honoring the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will 
continue through Saturday. All events are virtual and open to students, faculty, staff, alumni 
and friends of the college. See the college's complete list of MLK events.
JEDI Working Group 3 Update: Student Life
The arena of student life is broad, but our working group has been focusing on Greek Life, 
student athletic experiences, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) student 
organizations, diverse religious organizations and inclusion efforts across campus.
The guiding principles of our exploration are equity and inclusion. What are the apparent and 
unknown inequities within the student life experience? Do BIPOC students have the 
necessary support to thrive? What are the gaps and what measures can be put in place to fill 
them? What best practices can we learn from our peer institutions?
Our information is being gathered through research led by students and the working group. 
We also are participating in listening sessions with several groups within Wofford's 
community.
Thus far we have met with Interim Director of Student Activities Talicia Murphy, Dean of 
Students Roberta Hurley and Assistant Dean for Student Involvement Matt Hammett, and 
have sat in on numerous listening sessions with student groups, including Bonner Scholars, 
Wofford Anti-Racism Coalition and Gateway Scholars. All of the sessions have provided 
valuable information on steps that can be taken to create a more welcoming and inclusive 
environment. We have other listening sessions scheduled with athletics and other student 
groups.
It is important that the voices of many are heard and we encourage folks in the Wofford 
community to contact the group's leader, James Stukes (stukesje@wofford.edu), 
coordinator for college access and student success, for an opportunity to share their 
thoughts. Other members of the group include Trustee Chris Carpenter; Arsenio Parks, 
senior assistant director in admission and diversity recruitment and initiatives coordinator; Dr. 
Jameica Hill, chair of the chemistry department and faculty athletics representative; and 
Jurnee Jones '21, a Campus Union senior delegate.

Never forget
The Rev. Peter Larsen ’70, right, and the Rev. Keith Shuley met while working at Ground Zero in the
aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. They became lifelong friends and talk each year on Sept.
11.
Even now, through the fog of years gone by and the mist of ever-lasting sorrow, Cat
MacRae’s face is the first thing the Rev. Peter Larsen ’70 sees when he thinks about the
terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
MacRae was the oldest daughter of a family in Larsen’s congregation at St. John’s Episcopal
Church and St. Andrew’s Dune Church in Southampton, New York. She went to work that
morning with 39 other employees at a financial management company on the 93rd floor in the
north tower of the World Trade Center.
She was 23.
“All 40 people in her company were killed, probably instantly because of where the plane hit,”
says Larsen, who is now retired and living in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. “There were no phone
calls to family members. Her body was never found. A funeral service was held in October
(2001) in Southampton, with over 1,000 in attendance.”
Larsen, who also was in the Navy Reserve at the time, was called to serve as a chaplain at
Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks. For 11 days he worked with police and fire crews
who were searching the rubble and comforted families of victims who came to the site.
“I was on duty one day at the nearest hospital,” Larsen says. “Doctors and nurses from all
over the country had come to help, and there were 25 refrigerator trucks to hold the bodies.
But there was no business, and there were no bodies in the trucks.”

Remembering James Trentini ’59
James Trentini ’59 was identified as a victim of the Sept. 11 attacks after his Wofford College
class ring was found at Ground Zero. He was traveling with his wife, Mary, on American
Airlines Flight 11. The couple’s daughter reflected on her parents, and one of James’ Wofford
football teammates shared memories of him with the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. Dr. Philip
Dorroll, associate professor of religion, also discussed the 20th anniversary of the attacks.

Impressive Terriers
Seven Wofford students interned with Oncocyte and impressed their colleagues. Five were in the
company’s Irvine, California, office and two were in Nashville, Tennessee.
Some of the chatter in Oncocyte’s Irvine, California, and Nashville, Tennessee, offices this
summer focused on the interns being impressive.
It’s praise that Oncocyte CEO Ronnie Andrews ’81, a Wofford College Trustee, is
accustomed to hearing.
“It makes me feel incredibly proud because most people in California have never heard of
Wofford,” Andrews says.
Oncocyte is a molecular diagnostics company focused on providing tests and solutions to
support the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Since 2006, Andrews has made it a priority to provide internships for Terriers, or as he calls
them around the office, “T-Dawgs.” Usually, there are two or three. This summer, Oncocyte
had seven. Five were in California and two were in the company’s recently opened Nashville
office.

Hipp Lecture Series
Earlier this week, former S.C. Gov. David Beasley kicked off the Hipp Center for National
Security and Foreign Policy’s Annual Lecture Series for this academic year. Beasley is the
executive director of the World Food Programme, which is a branch of the United Nations.
The organization was the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
The next Hipp Series event is on Thursday, Sept. 16. The college will host Michael Ussery, a
former ambassador to Morocco, and Paul Michael Wihbey, executive director of the Institute
for the Geopolitics of Energy & Strategic Resources, both of whom will spend time talking
with Wofford students and sharing their perspectives with classes.

Fadzai Mushayamunda ’22, a humanities major from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is doing a remote
internship with NBC’s “TODAY” show this summer.

A lot of people have had Zoom calls with the boss over the past year and half. Fadzai
Mushayamunda ’22, is no exception.
As part of her internship with NBC News’ “TODAY” Show, Mushayamunda, a humanities
major and Bonner Scholar from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, got to sit in on a call with The
Boss. As in Bruce Springsteen.
Mushayamunda also has been on calls with Jennifer Lopez, actor James Michael Tyler
(Gunther from “Friends”) and Brandon Flowers (lead singer and keyboardist for The Killers).
“Mainly I’m in charge of recording the interviews,” Mushayamunda says. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Because of the ongoing pandemic, Mushayamunda is working remotely. She was at first
disappointed that she would be spending the summer in Winston-Salem instead of New York
City. Once she got started, however, she appreciated the familiar surroundings.
“Everyone wants to spend the summer in New York and get that experience,” she says. “But
having it be here opened up a lot of opportunities for me and made it easier to do the work.
After such a tumultuous year, it was nice to be able to come home and get the energy I need
going into my senior year. This is the last summer I’ll be able to do that.”

An unexpected reunion

Early on the morning of June 16, Dr. G.R. Davis, McCalla Professor of Biology, lay on a
hospital bed. His chest had been shaved and cold electrodes were in place.
He was being prepared for heart surgery.
“I wasn’t nervous,” Davis says. “In fact, I had a sense of assurance because the doctor was
one in whom I put great trust.”
Dr. Michael O’Quinn, who happened to be a 1999 Wofford College graduate and one of
Davis’ former students, was his cardiologist.
“He was one of mine,” Davis says.
O’Quinn performed cryoablation, a procedure meant to restore a normal heart rhythm by
disabling heart cells that create an irregular heartbeat.
Twenty-four years ago, O’Quinn studied physiology with Davis. He recalls Davis’ ability to use
colorful analogies to illustrate scientific principles.

Stanley Broaden has been hired as associate athletics director for operations. The
Department of Athletics has restructured that position, and Broaden takes over many of the
responsibilities of Mark Line, who has been named Wofford’s first softball coach. Read more

Support doubling Pell Grants
At least 18% of Wofford College’s student body were eligible for a Pell Grant during the 2020-
21 academic year. Pell Grants help nearly 7 million students from families earning low to
moderate incomes attend college each year.
The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) is leading
a movement to double the annual Pell Grant maximum award to $13,000. This would
support the reduction of student debt and boost economic mobility.
