Meet the Class of 2026
Wofford College’s 168th year is underway. The Class of 2026, which has 508 students, signed the
college’s honor code earlier this week and participated in the campus tradition of signing its class banner.
Wofford College has welcomed its largest incoming class ever as the Class of 2026 arrived
on campus.
The class has 508 students who were selected from a record 4,427 applications received by
the college. The class is the college’s most selective one ever.
The college also added 31 transfer students.

Office of Advancement is rebranded
Over the years, staff at Wofford charged with raising support for students and faculty have
been asked what “advancement” or “development” means as part of the Office of
Advancement or Office of Development. Those conversations take away from the important
work of engaging alumni, parents and friends of the college and sharing the college’s needs
and vision.
Words matter, so it's time to refocus those conversations on what’s important. As of Sept. 1,
2022, we’re rebranding as the Office of Philanthropy + Engagement. With the new name,
there will be no doubt that we’re 100% about raising support for students needs and
engaging the Wofford community in the college’s mission.
The name change is just in time for a fall filled with opportunities to reconnect with the
college and learn more about how you can make an impact for current and future Wofford
students. I hope you’ll take a look at the alumni calendar and join us on campus this fall. The
college calendar also has lots of events that are open to the greater Wofford community.
As part of the rebrand, you will see a new and improved web presence, more active social
media and a slate of volunteer-driven events designed to help you connect your interests to
the needs of the college. We’re going to be focusing on additional ways to connect students
to alumni, parents and friends, and we’re working to make giving and engagement more
convenient and rewarding.

Ben Sale ’25 is a computer science major and mathematics minor with a concentration in data science
from Fort Mill, South Carolina, who started Bear Baking. He’s received advice from Stephan Baity,
director of culinary operations for Wofford’s culinary partner AVI Foodsystems.

Ben Sale ’25 says baking is a science. This summer, the kitchen was his lab.
Sale is a computer science major and mathematics minor with a concentration in data
science from Fort Mill, South Carolina.
Growing up, Sale always had a sweet tooth and would experiment with different recipes.
After becoming vegan and adopting a gluten-free diet within the past year, this sweet tooth
was a bit more difficult to cure, so he got creative with the recipes he used.

The Resilience Project
The fourth volume of the Resilience Project is available. The project involves student
researchers collecting stories from students, faculty, staff and alumni that focus on how
individuals have faced adversity and responded with resilience. Project coordinators for Vol.
4 were Abby Landfried ’23, Olivia Weller ’24, Sam English ’22 and John Jeffrey ’22.

Panoff recognized
Dr. Robert Panoff, adjunct instructor of
computer science, is being recognized
for his work in computer science.
Dr. Robert Panoff, adjunct instructor of computer science, is the first recipient of the
Educational Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computational Science Education by the
ACM SIGHPC chapter. He was recognized for his work assisting faculty with the integration
of computational science in the undergraduate curriculum. He is widely known for developing
Interactivate, a set of modeling tools to assist in the teaching of pre-college science and
math. He also has received numerous National Science Foundation grants to provide
workshops for faculty, K-12 teachers and students.
Panoff will receive a $2,000 honorarium and recognition at the SC22 meeting in Dallas,
Texas, in November.
Terrier Club online auction
The Terrier Club’s online auction goes live beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. Every dollar raised
impacts the college’s more than 400 student-athletes by providing scholarship support to all
of Wofford’s 20 athletics teams. You must register to bid on items. Register now and start
browsing items that will be up for bid.

Celebrating legacies

Phillip Fant ’74 proudly remembers the days he shuttled his daughter, Phylicia Fant, from
school to extracurricular activities and the lessons he shared over the years. James Cheek
’73 makes it no secret that he took great pride in the holiday and birthday gifts he bought
Phylicia, his only niece.
She recognizes the impact her parents and uncle have had on her life and understands
they’ve meant a lot to many others, including generations of students at Wofford College. In
their honor, she established the Phillip Fant ’74 and James A. Cheek ’73 Endowed
Scholarship Fund, which will benefit need-based students from Spartanburg.
“Legacy matters and they were courageous,” Phylicia Fant says. “The whole idea of the
shoulders we stand on is real.”
Her father and uncle were among the first Black students to attend Wofford. They made
contributions to shape the student experience, and recent gifts from their family will continue
to impact the campus for years to come.
Cheek has established the Arthur Earl Cheek and Myrtle Jackson Cheek Legacy Endowed
Scholarship Fund to honor his parents. Fant and his wife, Margaree, started a travel fund to
support students traveling with the college’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. All of
the new funds were announced during one of the college’s Black History Month events on
Feb. 21.
Cheek worked in the college’s admission office as a student, and that led to a full-time job
before he started law school. Fant, his brother-in-law, was probably one of the first people
Cheek informally recruited to Wofford while talking about his time on campus when visiting
with friends and family.

Arts update
The Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts is hosting an artist talk and
workshops involving dance Friday (Feb. 25) and Saturday (Feb. 26). Learn about these

SpartanDogs
After a two-year layoff, the SpartanDogs returned to action in November. The team has another race
coming up in April.

For two years, the SpartanDogs faced an obstacle they couldn’t go over, under or around.
The Spartan race team, started in 2019, competed in one event before COVID-19 shut them
down. The team returned to action in November and has another event coming up April 10 in
Concord, North Carolina.
Harrison Chase ’22, Leah Wilson ’20 and Liesel Rutland ’20 started the team. They shared
an interest in running and competing in triathlons and Spartan races and wanted to create a
club that focused on strenuous physical feats in a team setting.
Spartan Races are physically demanding, ranging in length from 3 miles to 26 miles.
Throughout the race, runners must complete difficult obstacles to get to the finish line.

Upcoming Black History Month event
“bell hooks and Black Feminism,” a panel discussion with Dr. Bria Harper, assistant
professor of English; Dr. Dresden Lackey, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology;
Jessica Scott-Felder, assistant professor of studio art; Dr. LaTasha Smith-Tyus, director of
career services; and Dr. Nancy Williams, associate professor and chair of philosophy, will
conclude the college’s Black History Month events and help kick off Women’s History Month
at 6 p.m. Monday in Olin Theater, Franklin W. Olin Building.
Southern Conference Basketball Championships
Sam Godwin ’24 attempts a shot against East Tennessee State University. Godwin is fifth on the men’s
basketball team in rebounds (90), and he’s made 64% of his shots.
Jackie Carman ’22 faces a double team against UNC Greensboro. Carman leads the women’s basketball
team in scoring with 12.3 points per game.
The men’s and women’s Southern Conference Basketball Championships will be held in
Asheville, North Carolina, Thursday, March 3 through Monday, March 7. The men conclude
the regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday at home against Mercer. The women’s team will end
the regular season at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Chattanooga. The seeds for next week’s
tournaments will be announced over the weekend.

Celebrating food and family
Wofford’s campus community was treated to more than lunch in the Burwell Dining Hall. A Mardi Gras-
themed celebration took place to celebrate the grand re-opening of the building after a two-year
renovation.
Wofford College and its culinary partner, AVI Foodsystems, celebrated the grand re-opening
of Burwell Dining Hall with a Mardi Gras-themed celebration.

In concert
Internationally renowned trombonist John Fedchock will perform with the Spartanburg Jazz
Ensemble at 8 p.m. this evening in Leonard Auditorium. Admission is free. Prior to the event,

communities from the impacts of unjustly 
applied environmental regulations. While 
protecting these communities, Mr. Mitchell 
found correlations between these 
environmental injustices and other 
socioeconomic issues. His work would 
eventually grow into a nationally 
recognized movement known as ReGenesis, 
a community-saving organization that 
brings economic development to 
neighborhoods around abandoned and 
potentially deadly sites such as the 
Arkwright fertilizer plant, and provide 
access to health care for those impacted.  
Harold Mitchell’s work has genuinely 
inspired me to focus on my own community 
in Charleston, which up until now I 
imagined a perfect haven to grow up in. But 
after listening to Mr. Mitchell, I vividly 
remember waking up in the morning to the 
smell of sewage from the water treatment 
facility in the middle of our harbor, or the 
dramatic change of water color when 
approaching the local papermill. Certainly 
not everything is as it seems, and if there is 
one thing that I have learned from Mr. 
Mitchell and my environmental studies 
courses, it’s to be the first to ask the 
questions and the last to give up. 
Attending Former State Representative 
Harold Mitchell’s lecture at Wofford was 
truly enlightening to me as a non-
Spartanburg resident. Not only was it an 
excellent presentation of information, but it 
has lingered within my head and heart. Mr. 
Mitchell had endured what people would 
consider unthinkable––he and all the 
people he knew and loved were 
contaminated by invisible and deadly 
chemicals during their young age, some 
even passed away leaving no 
understanding of the reason for casualty at 
the time. After some persistent research, 
Mr. Mitchell uncovered that his Arkwright 
neighborhood community was being 
contaminated by a nearby fertilizer plant 
which later would be deemed a ‘superfund’ 
cleanup site.  
The members of the community were told 
that the site was clean after its closure in 
the 1980’s but this was a lie. Though many 
people under these circumstances would 
owe it to chance and go on with their lives, 
for Harold Mitchell this sparked the 
beginning of a journey which would lead to 
the development of millions of dollars of 
infrastructure aimed to protect poor 
Students in ENVS 160 traveled to Lake Bowen for a kayaking field 
trip with Dr. Telligman and resident river guide, Bob Hathcock.

University of Georgia – Master of Agriculture & Environmental Education 
The College of Agricultural and Environmental 
Sciences at the University of Georgia offers a Master 
of Agricultural and Environmental Education degree 
(MAEE). The program is 36 semester hours and 
includes a thesis or non-thesis option with classes 
being completed online or on campus. 
Students learn to teach in leadership positions, educate 
and communicate with the public, and conduct 
research within the agricultural and environmental 
sciences. The program’s mission is to develop leaders, 
educators, and communicators to engage in food 
systems that are environmentally and socially 
sustainable.  
The UGA faculty, highly rated for their teaching,

in the southern mountains, to the 
questing Environmental Studies 
professor I met in 2014, to a mature and 
broad-minded adventurer paddling 
slower, deeper waters. One of the things 
John often says is “Way leads on to 
way,” and we see that as lifelong 
pursuits and passions flow like a braided 
stream through the pages. It offers 
inspiration and guidance, I think, to 
most of us – especially to our students as 
they make their way through and 
beyond Wofford. Not everyone is a poet 
or a boater, but everyone has things that 
bring them meaning and joy. Pursuing 
these, body, mind, and spirit, as you and 
the world change through the years, has 
made John’s life richer and more fun. I 
aspire to the same. 
 
 
On Tuesday evening I had the honor of 
interviewing John Lane, emeritus 
professor of Environmental Studies, 
Founding Father of our department, 
and river skald. The occasion was  
the publication of his most recent book, 
Still Upright and Headed Downstream – 
it’s a collection of his river writing, 
from the early 1980s to the 2020s. We 
gathered in a jovial but attentive  
throng on the Glendale porch to hear 
John reflect on his decades wielding 
paddles and pens, considering what’s 
changed, what hasn’t, and what the 
future might hold. I think I speak for  
everyone when I say it was delightful. 
As I read the book (like you should – 
it’s great!) I enjoyed following John’s 
arc from a peppery young kayaker, 
chasing adrenaline from rapid to rapid 
Dr. Telligman’s ENVS160 lab visited Wofford’s campus facilities to 
do a recycling audit. The students sorted through bags of trash to 
determine what items destined for the landfill could be recovered and 
recycled in a different way.

Yale University – School of Forestry & Environmental Studies 
Yale University offers several graduate degrees in 
the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.  
The Master of Forestry (MF), the oldest forestry 
program in the western hemisphere, is “designed for 
individuals who want to be at the forefront of forest 
resource management and policy.”  The Master of 
Environmental Management (MEM) “provides 
students with scientific understanding of ecological 
and social systems that can be applied in policy or 
management context.”  And the Master of Forest 
Science (MFS), and Master of Environmental 
Science (MESc) are designed for students pursuing 
scientific research in forest related or non-forest 
related topics.   
There are also several opportunities to pursue joint 
degrees in Management (MBA), Law (JD),
