Lizzie Richards ’23 spent the spring semester making sure there was a place for everything,
and everything was in its place.
Richards, a history and art history double major from Columbia, South Carolina, was part of
Wofford curator Dr. Youmi Efurd’s team working on a relocation and storage project in the
Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts. The project is supported by an Institute of
Museum and Library Services Inspire! Grant for Small Museums.
“I’m doing inventory and preparing the room for new storage racks,” says Richards. “I want to
use as much space as I can in a sustainable way.”
The grant funded the purchase of the storage racks and the relocation of items to be stored
there. Richards has been filling the new racks with a wide variety of works.

John Bauknight ’89 of Spartanburg, David G. Johnson ’98 of Spartanburg and Dorothy Acee Thomas ’96
of Gainesville, Florida, are Wofford College’s newest trustees.
Three graduates were elected to the Wofford College Board of Trustees at the South
Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church on Monday, June 6.
John Bauknight ’89 of Spartanburg, David G. Johnson ’98 of Spartanburg and Dorothy Acee
Thomas ’96 of Gainesville, Florida, were elected during the church’s annual meetings June
5-8 in Florence.
“Our newest trustees have generously shared their time with the college over the years, and
we are fortunate to have these alumni leaders on the board,” says Dr. Nayef Samhat,
Wofford’s president.

Wofford selects new VP for campus life and
student development
Dr. Sandra Rouse is joining the administration at Wofford College this summer to serve as its vice
president for campus life and student development and dean of students.
Wofford College is welcoming Dr. Sandra Rouse as its new vice president for campus life
and student development and dean of students. She will assume the role on July 18.
Rouse is joining the Wofford community after eight years at Newberry College, where she
has served as Newberry’s dean of students and as a member of the president’s leadership
team for the past six years.
“Dr. Rouse has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing student experiences, and we look
forward to having her leadership at Wofford College,” said Dr. Nayef Samhat, Wofford’s
president. “She has extensive experience in all of the areas that she’ll be responsible for at
Wofford while exhibiting a knowledge of current trends and new and innovative approaches.”
During her career, Rouse has been responsible for residence life, judicial affairs, security,
wellness, counseling services, student engagement, sorority and fraternity life, the first-year
experience, campus recreation, leadership programs and postal services. She also has
supervisory experience as assistant director of student advising and a recruitment center,
director of first-year and retention programs, and associate dean of students.

specifically, my classes often address 
representations of nonhuman environments 
in cultural narratives (including literature, 
film, and visual art) and the ways that 
human history is deeply entangled with 
environmental history. I’m committed to 
discussing the pressing dilemmas of climate 
change, environmental exploitation, and the 
human impact on planetary systems, and 
I’m excited to explore these themes with 
students in ENVS 202: Introduction to 
Environmental Humanities this fall. Outside 
of academia, I’m a big fan of heavy metal, 
horror, and science fiction. If any of those 
are your jam, or if you want to talk about 
environmental issues or humanities, or if 
you just want to say hi, please stop by my 
office in the Chandler Center. I look 
forward to meeting you!

My name is Patrick, and I’m excited to be 
joining the Environmental Studies 
department at Wofford as Visiting Assistant 
Professor of Environmental Humanities. I 
came to Spartanburg from the greater 
Boston area, where I was a Lecturer in the 
History and Literature program at Harvard, 
although I’m originally from the Great 
Lakes region of Western New York. As a 
native Buffalonian and longtime New 
Englander, I’ve often enjoyed the shores of 
Lakes Erie and Ontario, the Finger Lakes of 
Upstate New York, and the trails of the 
Middlesex Fells in Massachusetts. Having 
recently arrived in South Carolina, I look 
forward to exploring more of the state, and 
would welcome any suggestions for places 
to visit! I’m also always happy to talk about 
the Great Lakes and New England. Pro tip 
if you ever visit Western New York: if you 
call them “Buffalo wings” people will 
know you’re from out of town; they’re 
“chicken wings,” or just “wings.” 
As a teacher, I’m eager to work with 
students on scientific and social topics in 
U.S. literature and culture. More

Arizona State University – Master of Sustainable Solutions 
Arizona State University offers a master’s degree in 
Sustainable Solutions (MSUS) that uses sustainability 
principles and approaches to prepare students for a 
variety of fields, addressing complex human and 
environmental challenges.  
According to their website, “Students with an MSUS 
will have the knowledge base and skill sets to bring 
sustainability solutions to corporate, government, and 
NGO sectors.” The program offers students the ability 
to specialize in one of four tracks: policy and 
administration, technology and society, international 
development, and nonprofit organization. 
The MSUS program uniquely offers a capstone 
experience, in which students will do an internship, 
applied project or workshop in lieu of a thesis, 
gaining practical experience in today's competitive 
and knowledge intensive job market.

2 Urban Farmers Needed: The Wofford Sustainability Committee seeks to hire 2 student 
farmers to grow food at the Hub City Farmers' Market Urban Farm. Students’ primary 
responsibilities will be to help grow food and maintain the farm but will also help plan 
for the upcoming growing season and develop educational programs for the 
community. Supervisors are farm manager Ben Lea, and Dr. Amy Telligman. Farm or 
garden experience desirable but not necessary. 7-10 hrs/week, starting pay $9/hr.

Students Learn from Geopolitical Energy Simulation 
 
production, fossil fuel production, 
energy use, and CO2 production. 
Early in the semester, Dr. MacCarthy 
and Dr. Bradham united their class with 
Dr. Bill DeMars’ Global Issues class to 
run the simulation. Each student group 
was assigned a country or region and 
were given three simple goals: feed your 
people, grow your GDP, and keep the 
increase in global temperature below 
3°C. This required them to buy or sell 
grain (to feed people) and fossil fuel (to 
power fossil fuel plants), build new 
(fossil fuel or non-fossil fuel) plants (to 
increase GDP), and decommission fossil 
fuel plants (to reduce CO2 production). 
After the first turn, multiple countries 
had fallen into ruin and were on the 
brink of war! Luckily, they have now 
had a full semester of information on 
climate change impacts, regulations, 
and impacts so we are excited to see 
how the game is played at the end of the 
semester! 
 
 
This year, Dr. Bradham partnered with 
Dr. MacCarthy (Physics) to teach a  
course on the Intergovernmental Panel 
on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th 
Assessment Report. Authored by 234 
climate scientists from over 135 
countries, this comprehensive report is 
released every six years and 
quantitatively summarizes the physical 
state of the climate (e.g., precipitation 
changes, temperature predictions), the 
impacts of climate change including 
vulnerability to populations and sectors 
(e.g., the agricultural sector, women), 
and adaptation and mitigation 
approaches. As part of this course, Dr. 
MacCarthy developed a “tabletop” 
Geopolitical Energy Simulation to help 
students understand the geopolitics 
associated with decreasing fossil fuel 
use in order to keep the increase in 
global temperature below 3°C over the 
next 80 years (8 turns). The simulation 
consists of the nine nations that are 
responsible for roughly 60% or more of 
the world’s GDP, population, grain 
Students in Dr. Telligman’s ENVS334 Sustainable Agriculture 
visited Sky Top Orchard on Thursday to learn about apple diversity 
in North Carolina.

Vermont Law & Graduate School – Master of Climate & Environmental Policy 
Vermont Law and Graduate School announces their 
new environmental policy school, Vermont School 
for the Environment and its new Master of Climate 
and Environmental Policy (MCEP) degree. They 
are now accepting applications for fall 2023. 
Students will gain the skills and tools to implement 
solutions related to climate change and 
environmental justice. MCEP students may choose 
to shape their own program or study in one of the 
three concentrations: Climate Change, 
Environmental Justice, or Environment, Social 
and Governance. All students choose a research 
track which involves writing a thesis or a practice 
track which focuses on an externship or on-
campus clinic.

Goodall Visiting Fellow Artist Talk: Eric William Carroll will give a talk on his work in 
photography, science, and nature as it explores the differences in how we experience, 
organize, and represent the world. Through his photographs, installations, and 
performances, Carroll creates visual and emotional connections that span enormous 
distances in space and time. As the Fall 2022 Goodall Visiting Fellow, Carroll is 
participating in Wofford's Long Term Environmental Reflection project at Glendale 
Shoals Preserve.

 “Can’t they just not?”

the kind of thing most people think of 
first, was to offer an incentive…but as it 
turned out, the incentive was not one that 
appealed to me (it surely would have for 
another professor). Another was to 
provide information. Unsurprisingly, 
studies show that holding class outside is 
really beneficial for all involved. This was 
pretty convincing…but studies take a long 
time to read. The tool that won in the end 
was the hortatory tool – a tool aimed at 
my feelings. This was a meme campaign, 
spread all over Chandler, exhorting not 
just me, but all who saw them, to have 
class outside, to spread happiness and be a 
good professor. This campaign, eye-
catching but not time-consuming, won out 
in the end. A good suggestion for all you 
policy-makers – make things easy for your 
target population. We enjoyed a great 
discussion out under the trees. 
 
 
 
This is what one of my students asked as 
we discussed toxic waste dumping in my 
first spring at Wofford. And while I 
suppose they could, in fact, just not – just 
turn their trucks around and stop spraying 
poison around the Carolinas – in reality, 
if you want people to change, you need to 
make them change. You need to adopt 
some sort of policy. 
 
This was the focus of ENVS 312 last 
week – how to make people do what you 
want them to do. Without going into too 
much detail, there are different categories 
of policy that you can adopt, known as 
policy tools, which will, if successful, get 
people to make better environmental 
choices. The students’ task was to pick 
one category of policy tool and use it to 
make me hold class outside. You got to 
see some of these as you walked around 
Chandler last week. One type of tool – 
Students always enjoy a field trip to Glendale.

University of South Carolina – Master of Earth and Environmental Resource Management 
The School of Earth, Ocean and Environment at the 
University of South Carolina offers several graduate 
degrees including the Master of Earth and 
Environmental Resource Management (MEERM) 
degree for graduate students interested in management 
positions in earth resources or environmental 
resources. MEERM offers these graduate students the 
opportunity to create individualized programs based on 
their own interests and goals. 
The school’s website quotes, “To ensure a truly 
interdisciplinary education, at least one third of the 
student’s coursework must be in earth and 
environmental resources and one third in 
management, finance and economics, with no more 
than 50 percent in either field.”  This gives students 
the flexibility to create their own individualized 
degree within a structured program. 
In cooperation with the USC School of Law, the 
program also offers a JD-MEERM dual degree.

U.S. Army Capt. Sabastian Conour ’13 journeyed to Poland in February to see the scars of a
war long past and came face to face with the open wounds of a new conflict.
When Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Conour ran toward the battle. That’s what
soldiers do.
Conour was in the middle of his leave, visiting the sites of World War II Nazi death camps
when the invasion began. When he learned of Ukrainian refugees streaming into Poland,
Conour headed for towns on the border. He didn’t know what he would do when he got there,
but he knew he couldn’t just be a tourist any longer.
“I couldn’t see all these remnants of the horrors of the Holocaust and not do something,”
Conour says. “It just happens that I was in the right place at the right time.”

Networking with Terriers
Wofford students and alumni from Johnson Development Associates and OTO Development
got together to talk about internships and careers in finance, accounting and real estate
development. Wofford graduates Maggie Adcock ’21, Ashlyn Chester ’21, Andy Halligan ’05,
William Moore ’21 and Jason Patrick ’95 shared their experience.
Building inclusive communities
Dr. Lena Hill, Washington and Lee University’s provost and professor of English and Africana studies, will
discuss inclusive leadership strategies at 5:30 p.m. on March 29 at Wofford College.
Dr. Lena Hill makes lunch a priority. But lunchtime is about more than having a meal to fuel
her for the rest of the day, time to run errands or catch up on her to-do list.
Her lunches are often spent getting to know others, including students, and she welcomes
new colleagues to Washington and Lee University. It’s also an opportunity to mentor and
support the university’s inclusion efforts. 
“People are often surprised when they walk into a restaurant and see who I’m eating with,”
says Hill, Washington and Lee’s provost and professor of English and Africana studies.
“These lunches are rejuvenating for me, and I enjoy them, and they get me out of my box.”
Hill will discuss inclusive leadership strategies during a Women’s History Month event at
Wofford College at 5:30 p.m. on March 29 in Leonard Auditorium. Hill’s talk is titled: “The
Renovation Will Be Televised: A Toolkit for Inclusive Leadership.”
She will reflect on her career trajectory, her commitment to enabling diverse leadership and
specific actions to undertake that can help institutions maintain important traditions while
moving toward equity. The event will also be livestreamed at wofford.edu/live. Women’s
Leadership organized the event, which is being funded by the Office of Diversity, Equity and
Inclusion, and the Office of the President.

Wofford appoints new VP for advancement
Calhoun Kennedy ’89 has been named vice president for advancement after a national search.
Wofford College has named Calhoun Kennedy ’89 its new vice president for advancement
after a national search. Kennedy had been serving as interim vice president and executive
director since August 2021.
He has 18 years of experience in fundraising and alumni engagement as well as a dozen
years of experience in banking, sales and customer service.
“Calhoun has proven himself as a valued member of the college’s senior leadership team,”
said Dr. Nayef Samhat, Wofford’s president. “He has led the college’s advancement team
during a difficult period and has ideas for the future that focus on alumni engagement and
education.”
During Kennedy’s tenure as interim vice president, he instituted departmental fundraising
training and held donor listening sessions. He has improved internal communications with the
advancement team and is leading the team through a thorough assessment of fund
agreements, donor reports and best practices.

McAuley a finalist for man of the year award
Men’s basketball coach Jay McAuley is a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award.
Jay McAuley, Wofford men’s basketball coach, is one of 19 finalists for the Skip Prosser Man
of the Year Award. He’s the only coach from the Southern Conference in the running for the
award, which recognizes coaches for not only achieving success on the basketball court but
for displaying moral integrity off the court as well. Read more and see the complete list of

‘Pride and Prejudice’
Wofford Theatre’s production of “Pride and Prejudice” opens tonight at 8 in the Jerome Johnson
Richardson Theatre. It runs April 21-23 and 27-30.

Wofford College Theatre’s spring production of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” will give
audiences a different look at the literary and theatrical classic.
The adaptation was written by Kate Hamill, and it has progressive and comedic elements.
“It’s something that still has a message, but is endued in silliness and joy,” says Matthew
Giles ’07, the play’s director. “I think joy is one of the most underappreciated values in the
theater.”
Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m., April 21-23 and 27-30 in the Jerome Johnson
Richardson Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students, $10 for Wofford employees and $12 for the

Twenty-five students are involved with the production. They’re from various majors,
backgrounds and theatre experiences.

Happy medium
Andrew White ’22 has been part of a research project to create a 3D quality assurance simulation for
radiation therapy.

Andrew White ’22 set his sights on a medical career at an early age. He also enjoyed
physics and exploring the world around him.
Picking one over the other was going to be difficult. When he arrived at Wofford College,
White learned that he didn’t have to choose between the two.
“I was always interested in medicine because of my experience,” says White, a physics
major from Clover, South Carolina. “It wasn’t until my first class here that I realized there’s a
happy medium between medicine and physics.”
His “experience” was a bout with cancer during his first year of high school when he was
diagnosed with nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare form of the
disease. He underwent chemotherapy and has been cancer free since 2014.
This past summer, White was selected for an American Association of Physicists in Medicine
fellowship. The AAPM picks 10-15 students annually for fellowships. White was matched
with Duke University based on his interest in projects underway.

Reducing, reusing waste
Heyward McPhail ’23 and Mac Gavin ’24 are interning in Wofford College’s facilities department. Their
work is supporting the college’s efforts to be more environmentally sustainable.
Mac Gavin ’24 and Heyward McPhail ’23 are gaining special insight into the Wofford College
campus by sorting through the trash.
Gavin and McPhail are interning with the college’s facilities department. They’re getting a
sense of what buildings and residence halls have robust recycling efforts while paying closer
attention to where recycling and trash collection receptacles are located and how each is
labeled. The work is supporting campus initiatives to make the college more environmentally
sustainable.
“The work we’re doing here is groundwork for a solution,” says McPhail, an environmental
studies major from Spartanburg. “How do we start chipping away at this issue and build upon
it.”
Wofford recently completed the Campus Race to Zero Waste competition organized by the
National Wildlife Federation. The contest had 116 colleges and universities participating, and
Wofford finished No. 8 overall in the Food Organics Analysis. The college is No. 1 in the
category based on the size of the campus community and among the four institutions from
South Carolina competing. Wofford is No. 28 overall in the Per Capita Classic and No. 9
based on the campus’ size. It’s second in the state in the Per Capita Classic. Final reports for
the competition will be posted later this month.

Cadets participate in joint field training exercise
The college’s Army ROTC cadets spent part of their spring break participating in a joint field
training exercise with cadets from Clemson and Furman universities at Fort Jackson in
Columbia, South Carolina. By conducting squad- and platoon-level operations with more
than 100 cadets from other Army ROTC programs, they have completed their culminating
training event of the academic year and are prepared to attend Advanced Camp this summer
at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
The cadets flew on a South Carolina Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter from
Greenville’s Donaldson Center to reach Fort Jackson. Wofford’s Chardonnay Durrah ’23, a
government major from Roebuck, South Carolina, and McKenzie Norman ’23, a government
major from Spartanburg, (pictured) were among the 50 Southern Guards Battalion cadets
who attended.
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage
Month
The college has two remaining events for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage
Month. Dr. Rosalind Chou, associate professor of sociology at Georgia State University, will
present “The State of Asian America” at 3 p.m. Friday in McMillan Theater. She will draw
from her research on the myth of the Model Minority, Asian-American sexual politics, and
Asian-American college students to discuss contemporary issues in the Asian-American
community.
Dr. Kevin DeLapp, Dr. Harold E. Fleming Chair of Philosophy and Department of Religion
and Philosophy hair at Converse University, will discuss “Confucius and Western Modernity”
at 6 p.m. Monday, April 25, in Olin 213. The presentation will recognize the West's
intellectual debts to Confucius and offer several cautionary tales about Western
appropriations of Confucianism.
Virtual lecture on ecofacism
Dr. April Anson, assistant professor of public humanities at San Diego State University, will
present "Public Lands, the Sacred, and the Suffocating Archive of American Ecofascism" at
7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, via Zoom. Register here. She will define ecofacism and offer
insight about its ideology.
Commencement weekend
Wofford College’s Commencement Weekend will take place May 20-22.
The schedule is set for Wofford College’s Commencement Weekend for the Class of 2022
with special honorees from the Class of 1972 celebrating their 50th reunion. The weekend
will be celebrated May 20-22 with a senior picnic, honor’s convocation, senior showcase,
Baccalaureate service and the Southern Guards Commissioning Ceremony. The
Commencement ceremony will take place Sunday, May 22, and it will be livestreamed. See

The World as We Know It: 
Maps and Atlases from 
Special Collections 
Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594) envisioned an ambitious 
new type of publication: one work that would describe the 
creation of the world, the heavens and Earth, a history of 
the political states and a chronology of the world. We know 
such works today as atlases.
Around 1564, Mercator saw the need for a comprehensive 
collection of maps of the Earth and sky, including 
visualizations of all 16th-century knowledge, bound together 
in one book. In Mercator’s era, maps were bought singly on 
one leaf of paper and collected by their owners.
Mercator spent the rest of his life striving to achieve this goal.
In 1595, a year after Mercator’s death, his last living son, 
Rumold, also a cartographer and engraver, completed and 
published his father’s work. The title is medieval Latin: 
Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi 
et Fabricati Figura which roughly translates to “Atlas or 
Cosmographic Reflections on the Structure and Shape of 
the World.”
Gerhard Mercator named his work after the Greek Titan 
Atlas, King of Mauritania, philosopher, mathematician and 
astronomer who, in Greek mythology, was condemned by 
Zeus to hold up the sky. The title page of Mercator’s 1595 
publication features a depiction of a figure presumed to 
be Atlas holding a celestial globe, with a terrestrial globe 
at his feet.
The Mercators’ atlas continued to be published in new 
editions for another 40 years. During and since that time, 
cartographers have produced and published atlases that 
reflect the increasing contemporary knowledge of the world, 
an implicit acknowledgment that what we understand of the 
Earth, space and our fellow humans is constantly evolving. 
Selections of maps and atlases from Sandor Teszler Library’s 
Special Collections are presented in this exhibit to show 
how, over time, cartographers have represented the world 
as we know it.

e This hand-colored copperplate engraving is the work of 
Rumold Mercator (1545-1599), Gerhard Mercator’s son. It 
appears in the 1587 printing and translation of Geography 
by Strabo (circa 64 BCE-24 CE) in Special Collections as 
well as the 1595 Mercator atlas.
The elder Mercator is famous for his 1569 map projection. 
The Mercator projection is still used on some modern maps 
and was the prevalent projection for hundreds of years, 
but now it competes with newer projections that attempt 
to more accurately represent the spherical Earth in the flat, 
two-dimensional format of a map.
The copy of Geography in Special Collections is the first 
critical edition of the work. It was printed in Geneva during 
the Renaissance. Strabo’s original Greek text was translated 
into medieval Latin by Isaac Casaubon (1559-1614). 
Geography is an ancient text and a critical source for classical 
studies. Written around 20 CE, it describes the world and its 
people through Strabo’s experience and research. 
Wofford’s copy of Geography has been at the college since 
1854, the year of our founding, and appears to have a direct 
chain of custody from its printing to today. The editor, 
Isaac Casaubon, owned this copy first. He gave it to 
Philippe de La Canaye, sieur de Fresnes (1551-1610), and it 
was then held for two generations among a family in 
Britain until Dr. James Carlisle (1825-1909), professor and 
later college president, acquired it at some point and gave 
it to the college in June of 1854.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Maps portray both geography and history. Wofford College 
stands on lands previously held by Indigenous peoples. 
The maps presented here reflect therefore both Europeans’ 
arrival and settlement and the Indigenous population’s 
displacement from its ancestral lands.
This exhibit acknowledges the human costs of European 
settlement and is dedicated to the Indigenous persons 
and their descendants.

This map appears in John Kitto’s The Land of Promise, 
or, A topographical description of the principal places in 
Palestine, and of the country eastward of Jordan, embracing 
the researches of the most recent travelers, published 
in London around 1852. It is the work of Prussian 
cartographer August Petermann (1822-1878), who spent 
much of his career based in England and Scotland, 
and published this map, “Physical map of Palestine and 
the adjacent countries,” in his 1850 Atlas of Physical 
Geography. Petermann’s atlas contains 15 maps, 13 of which 
depict the whole world with overlaid visualizations of 
several subdisciplines of physical geography: geology, 
hydrography, meteorology, botanical geography, zoological 
geography and ethnography. Petermann also includes two 
“special maps” in his atlas, one of the British Isles, and this 
physical map of Palestine.
This map is a lithographic print in black ink and colored 
by hand, with meticulously documented topographical 
contours. Five inset topographic visualizations that 
correspond with lines drawn between letters on the map 
are placed along the print’s edges. A sixth inset diagram 
adds the element of time to illustrate seasonal changes in 
and differences between the physical features of the area.
In the text that accompanies this map in his atlas, Petermann 
writes, “Palestine, in point of physical geography, is one of 
the singular countries of the world; but till very lately our 
knowledge of it was extremely defective … It was from 
the absence of scientific measurements, particularly of the 
comparative elevation of the country, that many questions 
in the Biblical and physical history of the Holy Land remained 
unsolved.” He draws attention to the “depression of the 
Dead Sea below the level of the ocean” and he believes 
that “in studying the geography or history of the Holy Land, 
its Orography (the study of topography of mountains) must 
be carefully considered.” Hence the insets that visualize the 
valleys and ridges of the area.

re Historical atlases developed as a format to help readers better visualize the passage of time in maps. In such 
works, static images viewed sequentially show how the 
movement of people, borders or jurisdictions, prevalence 
of certain languages, and ethnic or religious information 
associated with places changed through time.
Edward Quin (1794-1828) took a distinct and visually striking 
approach in his Atlas in a Series of Maps of the World as 
Known in Different Periods (first published in 1830) by 
attempting to spatially `visualize not only historical eras in 
a global context but also knowledge of space over time.  
“Known” areas are mapped. Areas beyond the “known” 
world are visualized as clouds, obscuring “unknown” lands, 
the clouds’ edges representing the presumed frontier of 
contemporary spatial knowledge.
Quin was neither a cartographer nor a historian, but a 
barrister who conceived of the map innovations we see in his 
atlas. The first (1830) and second (1836) editions of the work 
contain a historical text by Quin that summarize the eras the 
maps depict. The third edition (1846), as seen here, omits the 
text in the atlas, publishing it in a separate volume. The third 
edition also differs from the others in that it includes 
hemispherical projection (half- and full-circle boundaries) and 
a lighter tint to the clouds. In the first two editions, the clouds 
are black and cover most of each of the first several pages.

Human knowledge of and investigation into the world 
expanded in the 19th century. The new and evolving social 
sciences, quantitative methods of analysis, innovations in 
graphic design and advanced printing technology 
broadened the scope of atlases to include more than maps. 
Atlases of the era were new iterations of Mercator’s grand 
vision: the representation of the known universe in one work. 
The visualizations seen here from George Cram’s Unrivaled 
Atlas (1889) and New Universal Atlas (1849) reflect that 
evolution. Some images depict physical geography, the 
traditional realm of maps and atlases. Others are preoccupied 
with the built environment, infrastructure and technology. 
Still others are concerned with human geography, or what 
we know about how humans take up space. 
“The Solar System” from Cram’s atlas illustrates what was 
then contemporary scientific knowledge about Earth’s orbit 
and its relationship to the sun and the other planets in our 
system.  
The central image, from New Universal Atlas, visualizes the 
respective lengths and heights of “principal” rivers and 
mountains.
“Diagram showing the comparative miles of Railroads and 
Telegraphs of the World” (from Cram’s) is an example of the 
type of data visualization that took root in the 19th century 
and began to be included in atlases. The data, though, is 
not strictly geographical but about the built environment 
or technological infrastructure.

the length of telegraphs lines? Railroad lines?

Interim 2022
The Science of Snagging Scoundrels: An Introduction to Forensic Science is one of 95 courses being
offered during Interim 2022 at Wofford College. The course is focusing on the scientific evaluation of
evidence in civil and criminal cases. Dr. Stefanie Baker, biology professor, is one of the course's
instructors.
It’s Interim at Wofford College, and that means Terriers are exploring, experimenting and
trying new approaches. The college’s original proposal for Interim recommended that it be a
time to run risks “that cannot be run during the regular semester when the emphasis is
different.”
Wofford began offering an Interim in 1968. It’s usually a four-week period between the fall
and spring semesters that allows students and faculty to focus on a single topic. Students
can participate in professional internships, including pre-law, pre-dentistry and time in clinical
medical settings. There also are opportunities to intern on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
Study abroad opportunities are popular during Interim. This year, 195 Wofford students
registered for such programs. They’re studying in Belize, the British Isles, the Arabian
Peninsula, Bonaire, Germany, Spain, France, the Galapagos Islands, South Africa, Italy, the
Czech Republic and Mexico.
“Interim allows our students to be challenged in environments that extend beyond the
traditional classroom,” says Dr. Tim Schmitz, Wofford’s interim provost. “During Interim, our
students problem-solve in the real world and have unique opportunities to develop both new
skills and those typically associated with a college education.”

MLK Day On at Wofford
The college's Martin Luther King Jr. Day On observances scheduled for Monday, Jan. 17 are
being moved to Zoom or postponed because of an expectation of icy weather over the

Beachams honored with Abernathy-White award
Internship fund established in honor of their service to the community
David M. and Cynthia C. Beacham are famous for saying yes. For more than 40 years, if the
Spartanburg community asked, the Beachams answered in the affirmative — serving on
boards, chairing committees, leading projects, volunteering, advocating and giving.
“They’re a power couple, and they’ve given 110% through service to more than 20 charitable
organizations in our community,” said John White, attorney and managing partner of
Harrison White PC, during the Abernathy-White Christmas Eve Annual Breakfast.
“Spartanburg is a better place because of their involvement, and it is our honor to recognize
their contributions with the Abernathy-White Humanitarian Award.”
In addition to presenting the award, Harrison White contributed the lead gift toward the
establishment of the David M. and Cynthia C. Beacham Endowed Internship Fund in the
Beachams’ honor. The fund will give students with financial need the resources to say yes to
career-enhancing and life-changing internship opportunities.
“Over the years, we have realized that internships are vitally important for college students,”
said David Beacham. “They give students the opportunity to put their academic training to
practical use, advancing their skills while discovering their professional passions and
purpose. Cyndi and I have been fortunate to have found our passion and purpose in our
work and in our engagement in the Spartanburg community. This fund will give future
generations the same opportunity.”
David Beacham came to Spartanburg as a Wofford College student in the mid 1970s. He
joined the college’s admission staff not long after graduation in 1977 and transitioned to
advancement and senior leadership positions. He will retire from the college this summer as
senior vice president for administration and secretary to the board of trustees after 45 years
of service. His civic and nonprofit commitments have included First Presbyterian Church, the
Cancer Association of Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties, Partners for Active Living, the
American Red Cross Piedmont Chapter, Habitat for Humanity, St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic
and The Piedmont Club.

Winter Wonderland
A record snowfall turned the Wofford campus into a winter wonderland on Jan. 16. The
National Weather Service recorded 6.5 inches of snow at Greenville-Spartanburg
International Airport. The previous Jan. 16 record was 5.7 inches in 1965.
Terriers enjoyed sledding and taking in familiar sights that were covered with snow. The
campus community is grateful for the commitment from teams working in facilities,
housekeeping, AVI dining services and Campus Safety for working diligently to ensure that
students were safe and fed.
Making the grade
Wofford students Blake Batten ’23 (seated) and Sarah Buckmaster ’24 assist students working on math

The first time Jacqueline Hansen ’24 met the students she would be working with in an after-
school homework club, she was hooked.
“I just fell in love with it,” says Hansen, a sociology and anthropology major from Clover,
South Carolina. “The kids are always so happy and eager to learn. When I go there, even if
I’ve had a bad day, they just make everything better.”
The clubs meet twice weekly at two Spartanburg Housing apartment complexes, Prince Hall
and Camp Croft Courts. Wofford students assist elementary and middle school students in
completing their homework assignments.
“We’re trying to bridge gaps and provide educational opportunities,” Hansen says. “We want
to make sure the kids don’t get left behind.”
The clubs have received national recognition, earning Spartanburg Housing a 2021 National
Award of Merit in the resident and client services category during the 2021 National
Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials Online National Conference and
Exhibition.
The clubs got their start as a project during the 2019-20 academic year through Wofford’s
sustainability seminar led by Dr. Alysa Handelsman, assistant professor of sociology and
anthropology. The seminar is part of Wofford’s Milliken Sustainability Initiative.
Alex Hill ’21 and Cierra Fowler, Spartanburg Housing’s director of resident services and
community engagement, partnered to design the club. Hill and her partner in the class,
Carlyle O'Herron ’20, went door-to-door conducting surveys and led a focus group to get
input from the community.

Networking opportunities
Wofford students Pierson Hotchkiss, Colin Bertram, Collier Leatherman, Luke Willis and Jackson
Edwards are continuing a college tradition by working at Prices’ Store for Men. The store has been open
since 1904, and it’s a popular place for students to shop and work.

Prices’ Store for Men opened in downtown Spartanburg in 1904 and has been supplying
Wofford students with clothing and opportunities ever since.
“As I understand it, in the early 1900s, many Wofford students were from rural communities
in the South,” says store owner Harry Price. “When they would arrive in Spartanburg, Prices'
would outfit them in proper college attire. That relationship has been built upon for almost
120 years.”
A 1904 photo of Prices’ storefront includes a young man wearing a coat and tie, which is
described by Price as being proper college attire for the time.
Prices’ Store for Men also provides learning experiences for Wofford students interested in
business.
“I like to think that working in a retail environment and being exposed to all aspects of an
entrepreneurial environment is a great way to prepare for the business world,” says Price.
“Developing personal relationships with customers and networking is a key to success.”
