Match game
Sammy Friedrich ’21 and Grant Wollam ’21 were swabbed on the same day in October 2019 to determine
their eligibility to become stem cell donors.
Sammy Friedrich completed his stem cell donation on Aug. 31 in Boca Raton, Florida. His cells went to a
50-year-old leukemia patient.

As members of the Wofford men’s soccer team, Sammy Friedrich ’21 and Grant Wollam ’21
were involved in some big matches.
None, however, were as important as the matches they made off the pitch. Through the
Project Life Movement, Friedrich and Wollam both donated life-saving stem cells to leukemia
patients.
Ann Henegar, executive director of Project Life Movement, says it’s a long shot for one
person to be a match and go on to donate. For two classmates, teammates and roommates
to make it, she says, the odds are staggering.
The numbers back her up. Since 2018, Project Life Movement, a three-person operation
based in Charlotte, North Carolina, has swabbed nearly 13,000 potential donors. They’ve
had 198 matches, with 17 – including Friedrich and Wollam – being able to donate.
Friedrich and Wollam were swabbed on the same day in October 2019, when Henegar and
Katie Fowler, the campus coordinator for Project Life, visited Wofford to promote the
organization’s mission.
“Grant and I said we wanted to sign up and asked if we could swab right on the spot,” says
Friedrich, who flew out Wednesday (Sept. 14) to begin graduate school in Newcastle,
England. “They only had a couple of kits because it was an informational session. It was
super easy and a really happy surprise.”

A group of Wofford students spent the summer working to assess lead concentrations in soil in
Spartanburg city parks

A group of Wofford students spent the summer looking for something they hoped they
wouldn’t find. They got their wish, and that’s good news for Spartanburg children who
frequent the playgrounds at 18 parks in the city.
Led by Dr. Grace Schwartz, assistant professor of chemistry, the group worked to assess
lead concentrations in soil in Spartanburg city parks. Chronic exposure to lead in soil can
cause a variety of health and developmental issues in children.
“This is the first time I worked on a project and hoped I wouldn’t find anything,” says Megan
Santos ’23, a biology and studio art major from Concord, North Carolina. “Some parks had
higher content, but the concentration was not high enough to be of concern based on EPA
(Environmental Protection Agency) standards.”
The project is a follow-up to a 2021 study by another Wofford team that looked at the
quantity and quality of parks in Spartanburg County. The team wanted to measure levels of
lead because it’s a common urban pollutant that was formerly used in gasoline and paint,
and also is an industrial pollutant.

Wofford College is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a top national liberal arts college, a best
value and for supporting social mobility.
Wofford College continues to be ranked by national publications as one the best colleges in
the United States. This time, it’s U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges for 2022-23.
The rankings were announced Monday, Sept. 12, and Wofford is ranked No. 70 on the
publication’s rankings of national liberal arts colleges. The college is ranked No. 58 on the list
of best values and No. 97 for social mobility.
“Wofford College’s presence in national rankings reflects a commitment to student success
by faculty and staff and a uniquely committed alumni network,” says Dr. Nayef Samhat, the
college’s president. “The Wofford community is filled with people who are dedicated to
mentoring, learning in the classroom and out, and support exceptional experiential learning
opportunities, all of which prepare our students for life after college.”

New life
Lizzie Richards ’23 spent the summer researching the life of Helen DuPré Moseley.

Helen DuPré Moseley was a prolific writer, filling thousands of diary and journal pages. She 
wrote about her family, the weather and the things going on around town. But she rarely 
wrote about her art.
That’s one of the things Lizzie Richards ’23 learned over the summer while researching the 
life of Moseley, an artist known for her paintings of surreal figures. As part of her project, 
Richards, a history and art history major from Columbia, South Carolina, is now selecting 
some of Moseley’s works for an exhibit scheduled to open in February 2023.
“Art was only a hobby for her,” says Richards. “When I look at her artwork, it’s so childlike in 
a way. It’s so creative, and it’s work that should be seen.”
Moseley’s father was a member of the Wofford College faculty, and she grew up on the 
campus. She took over her husband’s insurance business after his death in 1927. In 1934, 
she was named Spartanburg’s first female postmaster by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. 
She died in 1984 at age 96.

Opening Convocation 2022
The family of Corry Oakes ’89, former chair of the college’s board of trustees, accepted an honorary
degree and a Wofford stole from Chris Carpenter ’90, chairman of the board of trustees, Dr. Tim Schmitz,
interim provost, and President Nayef Samhat during Opening Convocation. Oakes died Aug. 7.
The family of Corry Oakes ’89, former chair of the college’s board of trustees, accepted an
honorary degree given to him posthumously during Opening Convocation. He was scheduled
to receive the degree and to give the address at the event before his death on Aug. 7. Oakes
wrote his speech in advance, and President Nayef Samhat read it on his behalf during

“The Shape I'm In: Tri State Sculptors Member Exhibition” is on display in the Richardson Family Art
Gallery, courtyard and cafÃ© space in conjunction with Wofford College hosting the 44th Annual Tri State
Sculptors Conference in October.
Wofford College will have four exhibits that the public is invited to view during September,
including one that celebrates the legacy of Anne Frank that will begin Sept. 19 and include a
Sept. 27 public discussion with Dr. Doyle Stevick, director of the University of South
Carolina’s Anne Frank Center.

Wofford alumnae and a student are behind a
musical with S.C. Children’s Theatre
The musical “Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus!” opens Sept. 23 at the South
Carolina Children’s Theatre in Greenville, South Carolina, and two Wofford graduates
and a current student are involved with its production.
Connor Vetter ’14 is the musical’s director, Rachel Johnson ’24, a theatre major from
Spartanburg, is serving as its music director, and Joanna Burgess ’22 is the lighting director.
It’s the first production of the theatre’s 2022-23 season. Vetter and Johnson collaborated on
“The Missing Moon,” which was written by former Wofford faculty member Kerry Ferguson
and performed on the theatre’s second stage. Watch an interview with Vetter and others
involved with the musical.

World Water Day at Glendale

The kids learned all different facts on 
why water is important for humans and 
the environment. Volunteers helped 
teach the kids about how to keep our 
waters clean and how certain US 
governmental programs help with the 
cause. We hope informing these young 
kids about our world’s water will benefit 
in the long run, as they continue the 
conversation with their friends, family, 
neighbors, and even strangers! 
At the end of the day, families 
(including Dr. Brewitt) picnicked on the 
river’s edge and enjoyed the rest of the 
beautiful Saturday. Shoutout to all the 
volunteers who helped with this event. 
Samantha and I couldn’t have done it 
all alone! Please keep an eye out for our 
next event on April 22, as we will 
celebrate Earth Day and self-care! 
 
 
 
This past Saturday (March 19), we 
celebrated World Water Day with 
crafts, water testing, and the bright sun! 
It was the perfect day to be outside and 
learn about water in our everyday lives. 
We invited kids from all around the 
Spartanburg/Greenville area to come 
and join us. The kids thoroughly 
enjoyed the water testing and were 
amazed at the results they found. 
Everyone was able to gather water 
samples from Lawson’s Fork Creek and 
measure the pH and dissolved oxygen 
levels. The kids also created small 
flowerpots, which were made from 
recycled toilet paper rolls. They added 
soil and seeds into the roll and used a 
popsicle stick to identify the flower 
planted. Coloring pages were also 
decorated to create the best home 
décor! 
The World Water Day event was organized by the Goodall outreach 
interns and included lots of kid-friendly activities for families.

University of Delaware – Center for Energy and Environmental Policy 
The University of Delaware’s Center for Energy and 
Environmental Policy (CEEP) was established in 1980 
and is a leading institution in graduate education, 
research, and energy and environmental policy. The 
lead professor of the program, Dr. John Byrne, shares 
the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to 
Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on 
Climate Change with fellow panel authors and review 
editors.  
The CEEP offers master and doctoral degrees in 
Energy and Environmental Policy (MEEP and PhD-
ENEP) and sponsors degrees in the School of Urban 
Affairs and Public Policy Program (MA-E3 and PhD-
TES).   
The program’s areas of research include energy 
sustainability, environmental justice, global 
environments, political ecology, sustainable 
development, and water sustainability.

Giving Thanks by Dr. Peter Brewitt 
 
Mexico and the Southwest, but initially 
for cultural purposes – more like pets 
than protein. Potatoes, sweet and 
ordinary, are from the Andes. Corn was 
grown across much of Native America. 
The pumpkins in your pie grew amongst 
native corn fields. The natives of New 
England were using cranberries when 
the pilgrims arrived. And the green 
beans that you should probably leave 
out of your sandwich? They’re 
American too. When you eat a 
traditional Thanksgiving dinner 
(obviously everyone does it a little 
differently), you’re more connected to 
native agriculture than, probably, at any 
other meal all year. 
Writing this has made me hungry, so I’ll 
end here. But I wish all of you a happy 
Thanksgiving! Rest up, enjoy the meal, 
and give thanks for the good things in 
life. 
 
Next week, America will find itself 
conscientiously digesting, wondering 
whether putting green beans in a turkey 
sandwich is genius or Too Much, and 
debating with family members about 
whether to head into Black Friday.  
More, I would argue, than the Fourth 
of July (lots of countries have 
independence days), Thanksgiving is 
the most American of holidays. 
It is also, of course, an environmental 
day. Leaving aside the enormous 
carbon emissions from all those people 
going home for the holidays (family 
seems like a good justification for this 
though), let us consider the meal that so 
many of us will all be eating. The 
American diet most days is built 
around the foods Europeans brought 
across the Atlantic Ocean – beef, pork, 
chicken, wheat. But Thanksgiving 
dinner is in many ways a New World

PROFILE OF THE WEEK: 
University of Florida – Master of Sustainable Development Practice  
The University of Florida’s Master of Sustainable 
Development Practice (MDP) degree focuses on 
training students to address development challenges 
in poor countries. It uses the natural, social and 
health sciences to bridge these challenges and is part 
of the larger Global MDP Association, which 
consists of 36 MDP programs in 25 countries 
around the world.  
Classes consist of four academic semesters and one 
10-12-week summer field practicum, in which 
students focus on addressing specific development 
challenges in different parts of the world. Their 
research is then presented as part of earning their 
MDP degree. 
The UF MDP program is part of the Academic 
Common Market that provides students from 
across the southeast an opportunity to enroll at in-
state tuition rates. The program also has a wide 
range of grants and fellowships for graduate 
students.

Wofford students put siding on a Habitat for Humanity house being built in Chesnee, S.C. The students
worked on two Habitat houses in Spartanburg County over Interim.

Isa Ortiz Calzada ’24 never had a doubt about the Interim experience she wanted this year.
Calzada, an international affairs and French double major from Greenville, South Carolina,
selected “Build an Affordable House - Save the Environment - Transform a Community.” She
spent January helping Habitat for Humanity build two houses in Spartanburg County.
“I grew up in government-assisted housing,” Calzada says. “Being able to help somebody
who is in that position is an amazing experience. It helps you to really appreciate what you
have.”
Habitat for Humanity partners with communities around the world to help people in sub-
standard housing build or improve their homes. Habitat homeowners help build their own
homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. The Spartanburg affiliate has
built 147 homes in 34 years.
Dr. William DeMars, professor of government and international affairs, says the Interim
course comes at an opportune time for Habitat.
“This is of value to Spartanburg Habitat because it’s tough to find volunteers to come out at
8:30 in the morning in January,” he says. “These students work on the houses seven hours a
day for three days a week in January. Then two days a week we study problems of
affordable housing in the classroom.”

Strides for Survivors
Lauren Scalise ’24 is focused on her academic coursework, managing the Wofford College women’s
basketball team, editing the yearbook and organizing a walk benefitting breast cancer survivors for her
family’s nonprofit.

It’s a busy time of year for Lauren Scalise ’24. She’s juggling her academic work, serving as
a team manager for the Wofford College women’s basketball team and editing the
Bohemian, the college’s yearbook.
She also has the role of chief financial officer with her family’s nonprofit, Strides for
Survivors: Steps to Breast Cancer Rehabilitation.
Scalise’s family first started talking about the idea for a nonprofit in 2016, when her mom and
grandmother were diagnosed with breast cancer within a year of each other. She was the
only person with her mother when she received the diagnosis, and the retelling of the story
for a high school project is what sparked the family’s desire to do something.
“I couldn’t just sit back anymore,” says Scalise, an environmental studies major from Atlanta,
Georgia.

Men’s and women’s cross country teams earn all-
academic honors
Wofford’s men’s and women’s cross country teams have been recognized for strong performances in the
classroom.
The Wofford College men's and women's cross country teams earned 2021 Division I All-
Academic Team honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
(USTFCCCA).
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, a team must have had a
cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better. Wofford, under the direction of head coach Johnny
Bomar, recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.10 as a men's team and a 3.63 cumulative GPA for
the women's team.

The Class of 1972 celebrated the 50th reunion of their graduation during Commencement
weekend. They were treated to a few of their own special events and were recognized during
the college’s Baccalaureate Service and Commencement exercises.
Wofford’s fallen
Wofford has 102 alumni who died in battle dating back to World War I.
Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember the women and men who made the ultimate
sacrifice for the United States while serving in the armed forces. Wofford College has 102
alumni who died in battle dating back to World War I. U.S. Army Major Gen. Jeff Jones
was the guest speaker during the college’s Commissioning Ceremony this past
Commencement weekend. He mentioned the names of a few alumni who were killed in
battle.

Summer School
There’s still time to register for Summer School. The first day of class for the first term is
Monday, June 6. Current Wofford students, new first-year students and non-Wofford
students can attend summer school on campus. Find all of the information that you need
for summer school, including classes offered.
Baseball enters SoCon Tournament as No. 1 seed
The Terriers enter the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
The Wofford baseball team enters the Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed
when it faces No. 4 UNC Greensboro at 9 a.m. Friday at Fluor Field in Greenville. The game
will also be broadcast by ESPN+.
Eleven Terriers received all-conference recognition (a college record). Coach Todd
Intedonato was named coach of the year and catcher Lawson Hill ’21, a fifth-year senior,
was named player of the year. The team earned its second consecutive conference title after
finishing 16-4-1 in the conference and 40-14-1 overall. Forty wins is a team record.
Earlier this week, Ryan Galanie ’23 was named the SoCon’s Baseball Player of the
Week.

featured on HBO
Jesse Cole ’06 is a former pitcher on the Terriers baseball team, and he’s the owner of the
Savanna Bananas, a professional travel squad focused on making baseball more
entertaining with different rules to speed up play. Cole’s brand of baseball was featured on
HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” earlier this week. It can be viewed on the HBO Max
app. The team also will be the focus of an ESPN+ documentary-style series this summer.
