College sport is reaching a new high, however the gender disparities remain consistent throughout all aspects of elite athletics. From funding to media representation, and recruiting opportunities, women remain at an extreme disadvantage compared to their male counterparts. Despite a recent surge in the attention to women’s athletics, the main issues behind the gaps are still not being addressed or changed. Some reasons for gaps in attainment can be obvious, however other reasons may be deep rooted in social stereotypes as well as structurally. In a society where the patriarchy is seemingly indestructible, the fight for equality is ongoing. This study explores the differences between male and female high school athletes and their journey to becoming college athletes, and the reasons for their successes and or failures. Many high school athletes dream of becoming college athletes, but according to prior research, “Only seven percent of athletes go on to play at the college level, and only two percent play at the division one level.” (Morgan, 2024). Despite sports being heavily gendered, this research will deliberate the combination of attributes that contribute to a bigger role in this small percent of high school athletes that progress on to collegiate athletics
