build support for ecological restoration. 
I wasn’t sure what I’d find when I got 
there (otherwise it wouldn’t be 
research), but I expected to have a good 
time. It went well beyond that. I was 
really happy every day, everyone I 
worked with was kind and friendly, my 
research was fascinating, and my family 
had a wonderful adventure. My 
daughters went to school in the village 
and emerged with impressive Cumbrian 
accents and knowledge of Cumbrian 
slang. I did not acquire an accent, but I 
DID learn to drive on the left. On the 
weekends we visited castles and 
cathedrals and ate scones. We climbed 
mountains and discovered neolithic 
standing stones and explored London. I 
connected with colleagues and wrote 
book chapters and did interviews and 
found an inspiring young “rewilding” 
movement on the rise. I am glad to be 
back in America, where the roads have 
shoulders and the stores have corn 
chips, but am already planning to do 
some more research in Cumbria next 
summer. Also…if anyone’s interested, 
there may be a Lake District Interim 
coming in the future. 
 
 
 
 
 My sabbatical this past spring was one of 
the most beautiful and thrilling experiences 
of my life. From January to June, I was a 
visiting fellow at the University of 
Cumbria, in Ambleside, England. The 
campus is nestled right in the heart of Lake 
District National Park – I could walk to the 
office and then climb a peak on my lunch 
break. But despite being a magnificent 
protected landscape of steep fells, mystical 
lakes, and rivers that plunge down the 
mountains like white knives, nature in 
Cumbria, and all over Britain, is in huge 
trouble. It is one of the most ecologically 
degraded countries on earth. Without 
people, western Britain would be a 
temperate rainforest, dominated by misty 
oak forests where wolves hunt bison. Now, 
in the 2020s, there are no wolves, three 
bison, and hardly any trees of any kind. 
But as always, there are people trying to 
help. I went there to learn how the English 
are trying to restore their ecology and 
reintroduce locally extinct species through 
the “Back on our Map” project. 
They’re not up to wolves just yet, but 
are focusing on smaller species, like 
dormice, butterflies, and sundews, that 
can involve local communities and 
Dr. Brewitt and family made time 
for hiking and taking in the 
landscape while living in Ambleside, 
England, part of the Lake District 
National Park.

Wofford climbs in U.S. News, WSJ rankings
Wofford college climbed to No. 59 on the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 list of national liberal arts
colleges and is No. 1 on the Wall Street Journal’s list of private liberal arts colleges in South Carolina.
Wofford College climbed 11 spots on the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 list of national
liberal arts colleges. Now at No. 59, Wofford also gained seven spots to No. 51 on the list of
best value schools and is No. 71 as a top performer in social mobility among national liberal
arts colleges.
In addition, the college topped the Wall Street Journal’s list of private liberal arts colleges in
South Carolina and ranked in the top 25 among national liberal arts colleges. The Wall Street
Journal/College Pulse 2024 ranking focused on student outcomes versus similar colleges
(salary impact, resolution of debt and graduation rate), learning environment (opportunities,
facilities, career preparation and student recommendations) and diversity (opportunities to
interact with students from different backgrounds, including ethnic, socioeconomic,
geographic and differences in abilities).
“Rankings are a measure of success. They validate what we know: The work of faculty and
staff and the support of the Wofford alumni community are changing lives through our
commitment to academic rigor, faculty-student mentoring and experiential learning,” says
Wofford President Nayef Samhat.

Hipp Center to host former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland
Former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland Ed McMullen will speak at Wofford College as part of the
college’s Hipp Lecture Series on International Affairs and National Security.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland Ed McMullen will speak at Wofford College at 6
p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26 in the Papadopoulos Room of the Papadopoulos Building. A
reception will follow.
The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
McMullen will discuss “21st Century Diplomacy: An Ambassador’s Perspective.” He will take
questions following the speech.
McMullen’s visit is part of the college’s Hipp Lecture Series on International Affairs and
National Security, established and funded by Van Hipp ’82, chairman of American Defense
International Inc.
“Ambassador McMullen was one of our nation’s most effective ambassadors,” says Hipp. “He
did much to strengthen economic ties between the United States and Switzerland, which
resulted in increased Swiss investment in America and increased opportunities for American
companies overseas.”

Alumni Association diversity forum
Nathan Madigan ’08, Wofford’s Alumni Association president, moderated the “Focus on Wofford: Diversity
and Diversity Initiatives” forum on Sept. 13.
The Wofford College Alumni Association, in partnership with the Office for Civil Rights,
Compliance and Community Initiatives, held a “Focus on Wofford: Diversity and Diversity
Initiatives” forum on Sept. 13. Nathan Madigan ’08, Wofford’s Alumni Association president,
moderated. The event included reports and a question-and-answer session with Enrollment,
Marketing and Communications, the Office of the Provost and the Office for Civil Rights,
Compliance and Community Initiatives. The forum was part of the Alumni Association’s
commitment to increasing communication between the college and alumni.

Quattlebaum delivers Constitution Day lecture
Judge Marvin Quattlebaum Jr. delivered this year’s Linton R. Dunson Constitution Day Lecture.
Judge Marvin Quattlebaum Jr., who sits on the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th
Circuit, delivered this year’s Linton R. Dunson Constitution Day Lecture on Sept. 14.
“He is an exemplary speaker given his fidelity to the Constitution in his decision making on
the bench,” says Dr. David Alvis, associate professor of government and international affairs.
“His extensive knowledge of the law and meticulous attention to the details of cases serve as
a model of the type of legal mind we hope to cultivate among our students.”

Richard Johnson retiring after nearly 40 years of service
Richard Johnson will retire as director of athletics at the conclusion of a search for his successor.
After nearly 40 years of service to Wofford College, the past 23 as director of athletics,
Richard Johnson has announced his retirement. He will step down at the end of a successful
search for his replacement. The national search for Johnson’s replacement will begin this
month and will be conducted by Daniel Parker, vice president and managing director of
Parker Executive Search based in Atlanta (parkersearch.com).
“Richard Johnson has made an incredible impact on our college by influencing the growth
and development of decades of student-athletes and coaches. Most recently he has helped
the college navigate a complicated and changing NCAA Division I landscape, and through it
all, he has always understood Wofford’s commitment to the student-athlete model,” says
Wofford President Nayef Samhat. “I am grateful for his commitment to our college. Just as he
has been for the past four decades, I know he will always be a source of support and
encouragement.”
Johnson had planned to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year, but several head
coaching transitions kept him at the helm of the college’s athletics program with a plan to
retire Dec. 31, 2023. He, however, feels that the timing is right now.
“I am confident that our coaches, student-athletes and programs are poised for continued
success, and with a new capital campaign in the planning phase, I believe it is best for new
athletics leadership to be part of that process,” says Johnson.

Two ROTC cadets advance critical language skills
ROTC Cadets Simon Holland ’25 and Katie Sullivan ’25 studied critical languages through an initiative of
the Defense Language and National Security Education Office.
Simon Holland ’25 and Katie Sullivan ’25 spent their summers with ROTC cadets from across
the United States fine-tuning their understanding of languages critical to the United States
military.
Holland, an international affairs major from Columbia, South Carolina, studied Arabic in
Jordan. Sullivan, a Chinese and international affairs double major from Norfolk, Virginia,
studied Chinese in Taiwan. Both participated in Project Global Officer (Project GO), an
initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office.
According to Maj. Nicole Dallocchio, professor of military science and head of the Reserve
Officer Training Corps at Wofford, Project GO promotes critical language education, study
abroad and intercultural dialogue with the goal of improving national security. The project
provides fully funded opportunities for ROTC cadets.
“The major obstacle facing ROTC students working toward a critical language degree is the
heavy semester course loads in addition to military requirements. Roughly a dozen of our
cadets participate in athletics, which places additional strain on their schedules,” says
Dallocchio. “Army ROTC incentivizes cadets who study Arabic and Chinese at Wofford. The
Project GO scholarship is another incentive that Army ROTC can offer students, and it also
aligns with Wofford’s mission and core values.”

Students immersed in business, politics and history at
Aspen 
An internship at the Aspen Institute led Izzy Smith ’24 to pursue her dream of attending graduate school in
Europe.
Izzy Smith ’24 left her internship at the Aspen Institute with a new outlook and a yearning to
learn more “about everything.”
Smith’s exposure to business, politics and history lessons inspired her to fulfill her dream of
moving to Europe. The finance major from Washington, N.C., plans to apply to graduate
schools this fall in Prague, Czech Republic.
The Aspen Institute is a nonprofit organization with a mission to realize a free, just and
equitable society. It seeks to drive change through dialogue, leadership and action to help
solve the most important challenges facing the United States and the world. Smith decided to
intern at Aspen after hearing from former Aspen interns about their experiences.
Smith’s internship was with the Conference Services department. The goal of this team was
organizing and managing events spanning from 150 to 3,000 attendees.
Garrett Vernon ’24, a finance major from Elkin, N.C., interned in the institute’s Society of
Fellows Department, which handles donations and grants.

Basketball networking
Michael Henson ’25 worked summer basketball camps as a networking opportunity for a future in
coaching.

Traveling is usually a bad thing in basketball. Michael Henson ’25 spent his entire summer
doing it and didn’t draw a single whistle.
Henson moved between several power five colleges teaching children and youth basketball
while creating connections with coaches for his future in the sport.
Starting the first week of June, he worked at four different basketball camps focused on
developing and teaching kids how to play the game.
“I tried to network with coaches and meet as many people as possible,” says Henson, an art
history major from Spartanburg, South Carolina. “Working those camps was a way to
network.”
Along with working at Wofford men’s basketball’s kids camp, Henson also worked camps at
the University of Kansas, Brigham Young University and Marquette University. He was
named the coach of the week at the BYU camp.

Wofford mourns the loss of iconic faculty members
Dr. Richard Robinson, Dr. John L. “Jack” Seitz and Dr. David “Dave” Whisnant taught generations of
Terriers and served in various leadership capacities outside of the classroom at Wofford. All died within
the past three weeks.
Three retired faculty members who were held in high regard by generations of Terriers died in
recent weeks. Each made an impact in the classroom and in the community.
Dr. Richard Robinson ’61, Larry Hearn McCalla Professor of Mathematics Emeritus, wasn’t
just good with numbers. He had a way with words and delivered a speech in 1988 that’s still
talked about. He died on Aug. 8. He was 84. Read more.
Dr. John L. “Jack” Seitz worked for the U.S. Army’s Counterintelligence Corps, a World War II
and early Cold War intelligence agency and lived around the world before a career in
education. The professor of government emeritus shared those experiences with Wofford
students. He died on Aug. 9. He was 92. Read more.
Dr. David “Dave” Whisnant arrived at Wofford in 1983 to teach physical chemistry, and his
passion for integrating technology in the classroom led him to be named the college’s vice
president of information technology. He died on Aug. 14. He was 80. Read more.
Expressing gratitude
Harold Chandler, Wofford trustee emeritus, encourages the college’s community to honor the service of
the veterans in their lives by supporting the college’s Military Memorial project.
Three people immediately come to mind when Harold Chandler ’71 thinks about military
service — his Wofford College ROTC instructor, Brig. Gen. Ed Hall, and his two older
brothers.
Chandler’s gifts to support the college’s Military Memorial project honors their service and
all Terriers who’ve died while on active duty dating back to World War I and Wofford’s
establishment of a U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps unit.
Hall, a military historian who is active with Spartanburg American Legion Post 28, initiated the
idea for the college’s memorial.
“He was a very serious military officer, but he could relate to students,” says Chandler,
Wofford trustee emeritus.

Wofford announces 2023 Hall of Fame Class
The Hall of Fame Committee of the Wofford College Terrier Club Board of Directors has
announced a pair of former student-athletes and one coach as the 2023 inductees into the
college’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
The group includes Mike Ayers (football), Nola Crystal Belcher ’07 (women’s track and field)
and Adam Scott ’18 (baseball).
In addition, the Hall of Fame will honor Sam Maw ’56 as the Distinguished Service Award
recipient and David Beacham ’77 as an Honorary Letterman. The Hall of Fame induction
ceremony is scheduled to take place in early February.
The Hall of Fame recognizes “those former athletes and coaches who, by outstanding athletic
achievement and service, have made lasting and significant contributions to the cause of
sports at Wofford College, the Spartanburg community, South Carolina and the nation.”
