Thomas Rowland IV ’23 will open for Old Crow Medicine Show on Thursday, April 13 at Spartanburg
Memorial Auditorium.
Early in his sophomore year at Wofford, Thomas Rowland IV ’23 wrote a song about a
woman and the trials of their relationship. He called the anthem “Ragdoll,” and it became the
first original song he performed for an audience.
On April 13, Rowland will have the opportunity to perform the song for the largest crowd of his
budding career when he opens for Old Crow Medicine Show at Spartanburg Memorial
Auditorium. While he’s played at colleges and bars throughout the Carolinas, this will be his
first ticketed gig.
“I’m really a low-key, quiet person, and the attention I’ve gotten since this was announced has
been overwhelming,” says Rowland, a Spanish and environmental studies major from
Georgetown, South Carolina. “It’s the most attention I’ve had to deal with consistently.”

Sampson wins SoCon Entrepreneurship Challenge’s
nonprofit competition
Zion Sampson ’26 is joined by Sarah Butler, Launch Program manager in the Wofford Career Center, after
he was presented with the first prize for winning the nonprofit track of the Southern Conference’s
Entrepreneurship Challenge.
Zion Sampson ’26, a biology major from Aiken, South Carolina, placed first in the nonprofit
track of the Southern Conference’s Entrepreneurship Challenge that was held March 31-April
1 at Mercer University. Sampson won $4,000 to use towards his venture, Pre-Dent & Prevent,
to provide dental care to underserved communities.
Tommy Tessien ’26, an undeclared major from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, competed in
the contest’s for-profit contest and advanced to the final round by placing in the top four in his
category.

Wofford Athletics Zoom Update
Join President Nayef Samhat, Director of Athletics Richard Johnson, Deputy Athletics
Director and Senior Woman Administrator Elizabeth Rabb ’01 and coaches from women’s
and men’s basketball, volleyball and football teams for a Zoom webinar, 4 p.m. Eastern Time,
Tuesday, April 11. The webinar will focus on recommendations from the NCAA Division I
transformation committee and general athletics updates.
Register in advance.
Panelists will take questions during the event, with priority given to those who pre-submit
questions. Email WoffordNews@wofford.edu with questions or topics you would like
covered.
April events
The exhibit “Intersecting Methods: 2020 Portfolio” brings together the arts and the sciences to create
collaborative prints by partnering printmakers with collaborators. It’s on exhibit in the Martha Cloud
Chapman Gallery in the Sandor Teszler Library through May 21.
The public is invited to attend lectures at Wofford College in April focused on Latinx and
African-American experiences in U.S. history, the making of the American union movement
and the impact climate change has on children.
The month also includes performances of Wofford Theatre’s spring production and a gallery
talk by Dr. Robert Mayhew ’96 to complement the “Materiality and the Divine: Baroque Art
Across Europe” exhibit on display in the Richardson Family Art Museum in the Rosalind
Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts through May 21.
