The obligation to act morally arises from human obligation to repay it’s debt to the Creator. Verse 7:172 in the Qur’an indicates that human beings had not only accepted to obey God’s dictates in a primordial covenant but also suggests that they agreed to behave in a morally responsible manner. Because they are moral agents, human beings are free to choose between virtue or vice.

It put a stop to female infanticide and prohibited men from inheriting the wives of their fathers (4:19). It also granted women rights of inheritance and permitted them to possess property. Reflecting the patriarchal society of seventh century Arabia, the Qur’an also required that men be responsible for the maintenance of women.

Integrating Spirituality Content into BSW Curriculum: How (and Why) We Must Pursue It
Get PDFSpirituality and religion are vital aspects of client identity and well-being, yet social work professionals are often ill-equipped to address these in practice due to a lack of training.Social work education has historically excluded spirituality and religion content. Though the first Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) curriculum policies of the 1950s included spirituality, this content was removed entirely in statements from the 1970s and the 1980s. Today, the National Association of Social Work (NASW) and the CSWE support spirituality integration in social work practice and education, recognizing spirituality and religion as factors of client diversity. Programs have begun integrating thiscontent into their curricula, but existing research focuses on Master of Social Work (MSW)-level integration.Missing from the literature are (a) the number of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programs integratingspirituality and religioncontent and (b) best practices for teaching itat the BSW level. This banded dissertation addressesthis gapwith three scholarly products:a proposed conceptual framework educators can use as atool for teaching spirituality content across BSWcore courses, a qualitative research studyexploring the degree and natureof BSW-level integration throughoutthe U.S.,anda peer-reviewed conference presentationonthe proposed conceptual framework.Ultimately, the goal of this dissertation is to increase the degree and quality of BSW-level spirituality integration in the U.S.Only then will practitioners feel equipped to address client spirituality and religion in practice, and only then will clients receive the holistic, culturally competent care they deserve
Opportunities for Improved Outcomes from the U.S. Mental Health System
Get PDFThis banded dissertation explores opportunities for improved outcomes from the U.S. mental health system. A literature review was conducted to examine the significant events influencing the U.S. mental health system from the end of WWII to 2021. In addition, a thematic analysis of government documents highlighted the current outcomes of the U.S. mental health system for people with a serious mental illness. The findings showed that a disproportionate number of people with a serious mental illness are experiencing homelessness and incarceration. The reviews of both the historical trajectory and current status of the U.S. mental health system were conducted to aid in future planning to create better outcomes for people with a serious mental illness. Furthermore, an additional literature review of studies that used magnetic resonance imaging elucidated the current knowledge about serious mental illness. The magnetic resonance imaging data demonstrated, that for multiple serious mental illnesses, periods of active symptoms can result in structural changes in the brain which indicates the prevention of decompensation as a priority. Housing First is a model of prevention; however, the current data regarding this model are considered questionable due to quasi-experimental methods considered to be lacking in rigor. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted and the highest levels of evidence demonstrated that the Housing First model is more effective than treatment as usual with housing stabilityand cost-effectiveness outcomes. A national graduate-level social work course was created to facilitate the expanded provision of the Housing First model with fidelity
Classroom Participation as Essential Pedagogy in Undergraduate Social Work Education
Get PDFThis Banded Dissertation promotes the significance of classroom participation in the undergraduate social work classroom and is comprised of three scholarly products: a conceptual article, a qualitative content analysis research article, and a workshop presentation. Critical pedagogy and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) are concepts utilized across all three scholarly products to demonstrate the need for intentional classroom participation methods that represent the mission of social work education. The first product is a conceptual article that provides strategies for alignment between social work educators’ teaching philosophies and their classroom participation methods. The article makes the case for recognizing classroom participation as a distinct and crucial teaching tool for baccalaureate social work educators. The second product is a research study conducting a qualitative content analysis of 33 Introduction to Social Work undergraduate course syllabi. The study sought to better understand how educators conceptualize classroom participation and what they expect of their students. Findings were organized around the categories of expectations, attendance, and grading. The third product is a workshop that was scheduled for presentation at the Association of Baccalaureate Program Directors (BPD) 37th Annual Conference. The purpose of the workshop was to highlight the need for intentional class participation methods in the baccalaureate social work classroom and to draw attention to the complexity of creating and maintaining classrooms that rely upon active student engagement. Get PDFThis Banded Dissertation focuses on the Oglala Lakota College (OLC) Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program curriculum. Product 1 is a conceptual article introducing the Lakota Social Work Education Conceptual Framework. The focus will be on meeting the training needs of faculty, improve retention, persistence and completion rates for future Lakota social work scholars through integration of Lakota elders’ wisdom and teachings. This conceptual framework includes the practice of the Lakota value system in alignment with social work ethics and values. Product 2 is a secondary data analysis of student engagement indicators and degree completion among American Indian students at a Tribal College/University (TCU). Product 3 is a conceptual article that introduces the Lakota Social Work Education Framework. This conceptual model was presented at the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Annual Program Meeting to inform the audience of ways to infuse Lakota values, elder knowledge and wisdom into social work education and service delivery. This cultural-based model lends to the movement toward improving diversity, equity and inclusion in social work practice and education. The implications of the Lakota Social Work Education Conceptual Framework, and the empirical research on AI student engagement indicators related to degree completion adds to the efforts to increase research by AI researchers for AI populations. It also contributes to curriculum development for schools of social work, AI studies programs and TCUs to build toward improving enrollment and completion rates among AI students. Further implications support ongoing tribal cultural revitalization movements
