What Christians Get Wrong about Judaism and Why it Matters

    No full text
From early on Christians have defined Christianity in relation to the Jewish tradition from which it emerged. But when articulating Christian faith vis-à-vis Judaism, most Christian teachers and preachers down through the centuries have misrepresented Judaism, expressing anti-Jewish perspectives that often have fanned the flames of antisemitic attitudes and behaviors. The result of this has not only been dire for Jews, including in the last several years in the United States where there has been a dramatic increase of hate crimes against Jews, but has also distorted Christian self-understanding and faith. In this presentation, Rabbi Dulkin will focus on several things that Christians generally misunderstand about Judaism and why this matters for Jews, Christians, and others. Rabbi Ryan Dulkin teaches in the theology department at the University of St. Thomas and directs the department’s recently created Encountering Judaism Initiative. A native of California, Rabbi Dulkin earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in English literature from San Francisco State University and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in midrash and scriptural interpretation from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (New York City) where he also received his rabbinic ordination. His scholarly articles have appeared in Jewish Studies Quarterly, Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, and The Routledge Dictionary of Ancient Mediterranean Religions. Pope Benedict XVI, the Bible, and the Theory of Evolution

    No full text
Matthew Ramage, Professor of Theology at Benedictine College, has become an outstanding figure in the theological world through his scholarly engagement of Benedict XVI’s work on scripture and evolution. His recent book, From the Dust of the Earth: Benedict XVI, the Bible, and the Theory of Evolution is providing new ways of looking at the Bible while embracing the scientific development of evolutionary theory. Ramage’s work includes translations of Benedict’s work otherwise unavailable in English and, throughout, it is thoroughly honest in its treatment of scripture in light of evolutionary theory. On Wednesday, March 1, 7:00-8:30pm, Dr. Ramage will guide us in exploring issues of science and theology. How can the Bible, Catholic/Christian theology, and the theory of evolution be reconciled? How can they be reconciled while accepting the scientific consensus about evolutionary origins of the human race? Matthew Ramage’s work focuses on these issues, and he synthesizes some of the best and most important figures of contemporary interest

Supervisory Alliance and Experiences of Vicarious Trauma Among Clinicians Providing Sex Offense-Specific Treatment

    No full text
This study investigated the correlation between vicarious trauma and supervisory working alliance among clinicians who provide sex offense-specific treatment utilizing a quantative non-parametric method. The study included 22 clinicians who provide sex offense-specific treatment and were receiving clinical supervision at the time of the study. Participants resided within Australia (9.1%), Canada (13.6%) and the United States (77.3%). Participants were recruited from professional global organizations, professional organizations within the United States and agencies within Minnesota. Participants completed a Qualtrics survey which included a demographic survey, Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), Supervisory Working Alliance (SWA)-Supervisee Form and four optional questions about historical psychiatric diagnoses and treatments. The results of the study found a nonsignificant negative correlation between scores on the SWA-Supervisee Form and scores on the STSS (rho=-.006, p=.979). Results found a significant positive correlation betwn STSS scores and hours per week providing sex offense-specific treatment (rho=.627, p=-.002). A weak negative correlation was found between SWA-Supervisee Form scores and hours per week providing sex offense-specific treatment (rho=-.054, p=.815). Results of the current study suggest there is a relationship between hours per week providing sex offense-specific treatment and experiences of vicarious trauma. Supervisory working alliance does not appear to be associated with vicarious trauma. Future research examining additional constructs associated with vicarious trauma is warranted. Additionally, due to the small sample size of the current study, additional research examining vicarious trauma and supervisory working alliance is warranted

“Equity is Student Success:” White Women Leaders Closing the Higher Education Opportunity Gap

This qualitative multi-case study explored the experiences of nine women serving as presidents of community and technical colleges in seven different Midwestern states to understand how they serve students with an increasingly diverse background and ultimately work to close the education opportunity gap. The data collection process consisted of virtual semistructured interviews, reviews of strategic planning documents, and cataloguing posts from the LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube social media platforms. Seven themes emerged during the cross-case analysis of the nine narrative case studies including Contribute to the Greater Good, Commit, Cultivate, Advocate, Innovate, Collaborate, and Communicate. The central themes that emerged from the cross-case analysis were interpreted through the lens of the ethics-based leadership model as proposed by Fine (2008) and the inclusive Leadership Framework for Action™ developed by Tyner (2021). The goal of this research was to gain insight into the leadership perspectives held by the participants and how these viewpoints inform behaviors to positively affect the education opportunity gap
