Synthesis and Purification of Position 4 Analogs of the Opioid Peptide JVA-4001

    No full text
In the United States, there is an ongoing opioid epidemic that has resulted in the increase of opioid-related deaths by 369% since 1999.[1] Antagonists of the kappa opioid receptor (KOR) have shown potential in the treatment of addiction.[2] The cyclic tetrapeptide JVA-4001, cyclo[Pro-Sar-Phe-D-Phe], antagonizes the KOR and agonizes the mu opioid receptor (MOR) in vivo. Its ability to antagonize the KOR suggests that it could be used to treat opioid addiction. The D-Trp4 residue of cyclo[Phe-D-Pro-Phe-D-Trp], a peptide with a similar scaffold to JVA-4001’s, was shown to be significant in the binding affinity to the KOR. In the present study, we report analogs that vary in the D-Phe4 position of JVA-4001 in hopes of gaining understanding of the structure-activity relationship of its scaffold. Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis was used to obtain the precursor linear peptides, which were analyzed using HPLC and MS. These methods confirmed that the linear peptides synthesized had purities of 97% and 92%. The linear precursors were cyclized from head-to-tail in dilute conditions. The cyclic peptides were purified using normal-phased chromatography, which was followed by flash chromatography

Evaluating the Presence of the Endocrine Disruptor 4-Nonylphenol in California Glaciers

The use of GIS in addressing environmental problems is evident in its application to the Sierra Nevada mountain range glaciers in California. The presence of 4-nonylphenol (4NP) in pesticides used in agriculture has led to its accumulation in California glaciers through onshore wind deposition. As an endocrine disruptor, 4NP poses a threat to human health because it can interrupt and alter physiological processes such as human development and metabolism, and lead to ovarian and prostate cancer at higher concentrations. To evaluate the mass of 4NP in the glacier, GIS analysis is conducted with considerations of wind direction, topographic features, and 4NP concentrations throughout the glacial space. This study investigates the transport, deposition, and presence of 4NP. LiDAR is used to calculate snow depth and glacier volume, and ice core sample data provided 4NP concentrations. The goal of this study is to determine the total mass concentration of 4NP by investigating the influence topographic shielding has on 4NP concentration gradients in glaciers

A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Aphasia Workbooks

The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative and quantitative analysis of workbooks designed for use by individuals with aphasia to see how they are or are not consistent with recommended practices in aphasia therapy. Four research questions were developed: (1) What is the general structure of aphasia workbooks? (2) What is the frequency and range of linguistic and cognitive skills addressed in aphasia workbooks? (3) What clinical principles are provided to guide the clinician’s implementation of workbook activities? (4) What instructions are provided to the clinician and client to adjust for individual skill level? The methods consisted of reviewing the activities and instructions provided to the clinician. Four reviews were conducted, each based upon a research question. The quantitative reviews utilized frequency counts to gather results, while the qualitative reviews identified themes and categories shared across workbooks. The results demonstrated that activities are primarily directed to improving the comprehension and/or production of semantics. The results from the qualitative reviews demonstrated that the workbooks rely upon the clinical expertise of the SLP utilizing the workbook to guide its implementation as a therapy material. In conclusion, the workbooks can only serve as a supplementary material if the SLP utilizing the workbook has the clinical experience to utilize the workbook in a manner that would be beneficial to the client

Media Portrayal of Offshore Oil Drilling in Louisiana in California

Offshore oil drilling—an energy extraction process that removes petroleum from beneath the seabed—is a growing controversial issue worldwide and within the United States (Jones, 2018). This controversy manifests itself through the differences in public perceptions of offshore drilling among coastal states. Local media sources play an important role in identifying and reinforcing these perceptions. Existing research on state news media portrayal of oil and gas production suggests that factors such as political affiliation, geographical distance, and economic factors shape the perceptions that are portrayed through media. However, this body of literature has not specifically addressed the portrayal of offshore oil drilling in U.S. coastal states, despite offshore drilling’s influential role in the fossil fuel industry. This study employs an in-depth content analysis of newspaper articles from six different regional newspapers in California and Louisiana to explore how media portrayal of offshore oil drilling differs between the two states. A total of 67 articles were analyzed and examined for statements that related to the study’s categorical themes. The results showed that California newspapers were more likely to negatively represent offshore drilling through the discussion of its harm to the environment while Louisiana newspapers were more likely to negatively represent offshore drilling through the discussion of its economic benefits. Given the influence newspapers often have on public awareness and opinions, the inherent disparities between California and Louisiana newspapers contribute to polarizing opinions among Americans on offshore oil drilling

“Knowledge is Power” Engaging Latino Parents With a College Access Program: An Insider Action Research Study

    No full text
In the United States there exists an educational attainment gap for Latino students. Numerous studies show that Latinos lag behind their counterparts of all ethno-racial backgrounds in higher education degree completion (Acevedo-Gil, Santos, Alonso, & Solorzano, 2015; Davila & Aviles de Bradley, 2010; Gonzalez, Stoner, & Jovel, 2003; Perez & McDonough, 2008; Yosso, 2002). College access programs (CAPs) have the potential to impact first-generation Latino students by supporting them with college access resources and also help them navigate potential barriers to higher education (Knaggs, Sodergeld,& Schardt, 2014). Another important source of support to these students is their families. Latino families value education, make it a priority, and encourage their children in their educational pursuits (Kiyama, 2010; Trevino & DeFreitas, 2014). However, CAPs focus on supporting students and do not all include parent programing that would engage and involve family participation in order to enhance the support that students receive from their families (Tierney & Auerbach, 2005). This study utilizes an insider action research methodology in examining the Rochford College Access Program (RCAP) Family Academy because the primary researcher is also the Program Director. Parent participants were interviewed in the hopes of determining the influence of RCAP’s Family Academy on Latino parents of student participants. The findings of the study built upon each other to explain why Latino parents who had not earned a college degree would support their children in committing to a college access program. Major themes that emerged in response to the research questions included: (1) promised resources, (2) parents’ determination to support their children, (3) parent expectations, (4) opportunities for students, families, and communities, (5) cultural support provided by families, and (6) the value of education. The study concludes with a three-pronged action plan that was developed utilizing the findings of this study that satisfies the criteria for insider action research, a discussion of the implications for practice in engaging families in CAPs, and recommendations for future research

Six Narratives in Search of a Future: Current ‘Theory’ in the Sociology of Religion

    No full text
Six stories about religion’s future underpin the last century of sociological writing. In those stories, religion is either vanishing or growing stronger, individualizing or creating local communities, shaped by markets, or going global. Each of these six narratives presents a different view of religion and calls on different data to interpret religions’ current social significance. The stories constitute semi-conscious frames that structure sociologists\u27 explanations. Yet they leave out much of religious life -- including much of religions\u27 moral critique of the status quo. None of the narratives engages social teachings as a core part of religious life. None of them emphasizes the ability of religions to shape social life in intentional ways. Instead, religions are seen as irrelevant, as obstructionist, as inward, or as self-interested. There is no place for Selma, for Cape Town, or for Gdansk i.e., for religiously driven social liberation. This shapes more than just sociological thinking; it also shapes public perceptions of religion and thus affects social policy. Sociologists of religion need to pay attention to what our stories do not let us, and the public,see.https://inspire.redlands.edu/oh_chapters/1067/thumbnail.jp

Putting the Sex into Sexuality : Understanding Online Pornography using an Evolutionary Framework

    No full text
One encounters an obvious problem when using an evolutionary framework to understand online pornography. On the one hand, theories of sex specificity in mating strategies and evolved human nature lead to the prediction that there are commonalities and universals in the content people would seek in online pornography. That is, due to the fact that men have faced a distinct set of issues over the duration of human evolution, research suggests general tendencies in mate preferences, and presumably in the types of pornography that men therefore consume. Likewise, women have dealt with sex-specific challenges during human evolutionary history, resulting in patterns of mate preferences that are reflected in the types of online pornography they consume. Consequently, although the sexes likely differ in the content they prefer, there also should be a rather limited range of material that addresses male and female evolved heritages. Looking online, however, we can immediately ascertain that this limited focus is not the case, and hence, the dilemma. There is a wide range of pornographic material available online, to the extent that we are left with no option but to agree with Rule 34: If it exists, there is porn of it. This problem demands a solution; how can there be evolved tendencies and yet such diversity in the content of online pornography? We review who the consumers of online pornography are, how frequently they consume it, and the type of content that is most commonly consumed. Our goal is to address the issue of common sexual interests and the diversity of online pornography. We discuss not just sex-specific content but also the variety of interests that are seen within online pornography and erotic literature

    An Economic Atlas of India

    No full text
India is the world’s second-most populous country with more than a billion inhabitants. It is the seventh largest country in terms of area. The data provided by the Census of India in 2011 offers insight into how India is evolving from a developing to a developed country. This economic atlas was a student project that provides an overview of the socioeconomic conditions in India at the district level. It is presented in a story map format, which allows scrolling through the content easily, while at the same time interacting with the maps. An exploration of the atlas reveals that the level of economic development, as characterized by the variables selected, varies widely. Such variables as population growth, literacy rate, access to safe drinking water, banking, and homeownership jointly reveal both the degree of geographic inequality as well as some surprising aspects about the Indian economy. Ultimately, the atlas and its underlying data can be used to inform policy makers which regions need additional attention as well as show businesses where to locate if they are interested in entering the Indian market.
