Sensory Friendly Spaces
Sensory friendly spaces are necessary for many different groups of people such as individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), those with migraines, epilepsy, and other disorders. A practical knowledge gap was found with major companies not following previous research that emphasizes the need for sensory friendly spaces: alternative light sources, color theory, overcrowding effects and others. The goal of this project was to collect community perceptions of sensory friendly spaces and their overlap with where people with ASD and their caregivers often visit. The desired outcome was that areas of specific improvement could be identified and shared with those involved to increase awareness of this issue and spark advancements. A measure for sensory friendly perceptions of local businesses and community resources was created and shared with attendees of a community autism event. The most common accommodations identified that could be implemented to improve the participants\u27 overall and sensory experiences are simple fixes such as dimmed lighting or having more mentally stimulating resources available. These possible accommodations can increase consumer populations, positive reviews, and potential profits for all parties involved
Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis (Cosmic Analysis) Implications for Impact and Airburst Phenomena
The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis suggests a cosmic event 12,800 years ago triggered abrupt climate change and mass extinctions. This study analyzes Black Mat soil samples using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy to detect impact markers like shocked quartz, nanodiamonds, and spherules. Identifying extraterrestrial evidence could support the theory that a comet caused these environ mental disruptions, providing insight into Earth\u27s past and the role of cosmic events in shaping planetary history
Pump for Molten Salt Test Loop
The renewed interest in molten salt technologies for nuclear power generation has led to the development of a molten salt test stand at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). During the 2023-2024 capstone year, the SaltWorx team successfully developed a test stand capable of melting salt. Building on this foundation, Darvaza Rotordynamics is designing, constructing, and testing a pump to enable molten salt circulation within the system. The pump must integrate with existing hardware, operate within a predefined temperature range, and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety standards. This project focuses on developing a centrifugal impeller pump, replacing the initially considered Archimedes screw design due to manufacturability, performance, and financial constraints. The system is divided into five subsystems: prime mover, mechanical drive, seals, thermal management and data acquisition, and integration and testing . Key design considerations include high-temperature operation, leakage prevention, and maintaining safe system pressures. The centrifugal impeller is expected to achieve the required flow rates while optimizing cost and manufacturing feasibility. Successful implementation of this pump will enhance ERAU\u27s molten salt test bed, supporting future research and development in energy storage and thermal management
Clarity - Climatic Laser Analysis Research for Turbulent Yields
Advancements in high-speed data transmission, particularly for ground-space communication, have been made possible by developments in laser communication (LC) systems. Yet, sustaining the integrity of laser signals is severely impeded by atmospheric factors like temperature gradients, humidity fluctuations, and wind turbulence. In the past, these conditions have posed a constant challenge resulting in beam wandering, phase distortion, and signal degradation in systems such as NASA’s Laser Communication Relay Demonstration (LCRD). Since these effects have been under- investigated, a comprehensive strategy that concurrently addresses all significant atmospheric factors can mitigate these drawbacks. The goal of CLARITY involves the development of a robust LC system that can effectively account for the detrimental effects of climatic inconsistencies on signal quality to ensure dependable data transmission between ground stations and space- based platforms. The team has currently configured a laser communication model that will be testing a visible, green laser in various environmental scenarios including a baseline vacuum chamber, snow, humidity, and high heat tests. Once the necessary data has been acquired, the CLARITY team will extrapolate the data to further observe the environmental impact on laser integrity in deep space missions. As of now, the team has a working LC system and is ready to begin testing
Del Rio Springs State Park Restoration Project: Initial Characterization of Flora and Fauna By Traditional Ecological Methods and Environmental DNA Surveys
Purchased by the Trust for Public Land and Arizona State Parks and Trails in M arch 2024, Del Rio Springs is in the process of being transformed into a state park for the purpose of conservation and public use . Due to limited scientific understanding of the biodiversity, soil, and water quality in the area, conducting ecological surveys of Del Rio Springs will support the transition into a state park and help maintain the diversity and ecological integrity of the land. Environmental D N A (eDNA) meta barcoding and traditional surveys will detect fish, wildlife, and flora to provide an understanding of endangered and invasive species and potential environmental concerns . e D N A metabarcoding will be done via next generation sequencing to detect different taxa of vertebrates in a diversity of aquatic ecosystems. Water w as sampled seasonally f rom four sites with two samples per site. The samples were aseptically filtered, extracted for DNA, amplified for 1 6S rDNA through PC R, and prepared for next-generation sequencing to identify vertebrates. Water and soil quality were monito red using Pro DSS instrumentation and nutrient tests. Preliminary surveys identified 3 1 invasive species including Poison Hemlock, Utah Juniper, and Broom Snakeweed as well as 41 non-invasive species including Horsetail Milkweed, Deergrass, and Gray Globemallow. The detrimental effects of invasive flora species include siphoning nutrients from native species, contributing to soil erosion, and decreased vegetation diversity. Eradication of these species is recommended due to their negative impact on the ecosystem. Water analysis indicated no immediate environmental concerns with an average dissolved oxygen level of 1 2. 6 5 mg/ L and an average pH 6.7 6. The dissolved oxygen indicated healthy water for most aquatic life and the pH, though slightly acidic, was not a concern to wildlife or vegetation. Further collection will occur during the late spring for warmer conditions. The findings from these ecological surveys will guide the development of trails, campsites, roadways, and visitor facilities, ensuring that the ecological integrity of Del Rio Springs is preserved while facilitating its transformation into a state park
