Self-Regulated Thermal Management with Shape-Memory Alloy Torsional Tubes
The need for dynamic thermal management that adapts to varying system needs and requirements is a growing topic of interest in different engineering disciplines, most prominently aerospace and electronics. This demand for improved thermal management systems comes from the general increase of system efficiencies leading to an increase in component energy density. Shape-memory alloy actuators, which respond with a mechanical shape recovery to variations in temperature, can be used as self-regulated thermal management actuators that are able to respond to environmental thermal changes autonomously. In this dissertation, modeling and experimental analysis of a two-way shape-memory effect trained SMA torsional tube for self-regulated thermal management purposes are considered and developed. The behavior of SMAs under steady-state conditions is well understood. However, self-regulated behavior and non-ideal thermal conditions need to be further investigated. SMA behavior is highly non-linear and path-dependent and common applications use active means of temperature and actuation control using closed-loop systems. This research considers an SMA torsional tube responding autonomously to a process fluid running through, which experiences thermal variations. For these purposes, an experimental setup using air as a process fluid and a preliminary system model are completed to investigate the actuator’s self-regulated response and model prediction capabilities. The model is comprised of a heat transfer and SMA portion, with two SMA models considered (Liang-Rogers and a model based on experimental results). Steady-state, unsteady, and mass flow variation cases are carried out and modeled to analyze tube behavior under different conditions. A sensitivity analysis of different model parameters, including changing the process fluid and SMA tube characteristics, is also carried out. It was concluded that TWSME SMA have the potential to become part of thermal management systems. The main advantages include the simplicity of the design and autonomy, though there is a strong need for accurate prediction capabilities and choosing the right geometry and training for the tube tailored to the application is key

Effect of Vehicular Electrification on Transportation Emissions in Florida
Vehicular emissions from fuel-based passenger cars emit an array of gases and particles that are detrimental for human health and the environment. In that regard, electric vehicles (EVs) present a viable, sustainable solution. This study investigated the impact of electrification of passenger cars on air quality in Florida, in five major urban counties namely Miami-Dade, Duval, Hillsborough, Orange, and Leon. Between 2018 and 2022, these counties experienced a significant increase of 219.50 ± 52.32% in EV adoption, coupled with a 11.55 ± 6.13% decrease in fuel-based vehicle usage. Herein, we characterize five pollutants primarily generated from fuel-based passenger vehicles- carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and carbon dioxide (CO2)- over a five-year period (2018 – 2022). Hourly traffic data counts and their corresponding emissions were analyzed using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) software using the county scale. The shift from fuel-based vehicles to EVs has led to significant reductions in emissions across the five counties. By comparing data in 2022 to 2018, average reductions of 21.96 ± 21.43 %, 14.73 ± 14.98 %, 43.38 ± 43.66 %, 43.19 ± 43.52 %, and 11.19 ± 12.72 % were observed for CO, CO2, NO2, PM2.5, and PM10, respectively. Generally, Leon County (located in northern Florida and home for the state’s capital) experienced the highest reduction followed by Miami-Dade County (located in southern Florida), likely due to their high population densities. A Random Forest (RF) Regression model was developed to forecast future population and emissions in 2025, 2035 and 2050. The forecasted data were then adjusted based on EV adoption scenarios aligned with Paris Agreement recommendations and U.S. projections (25% EV adoption by 2025, 80% by 2035, and 100% by 2050). By comparing predicted values with the adjusted emissions based on the EV adoption scenarios, average reductions in 2025 are expected to be 24.97 ± 19.28 % in CO, 24.97 ± 20.68 % in NO2, 3.92 ± 1.26 % in PM10, and 24.22 ± 19.32 % in PM2.5 and 19.20 ± 10.55 % in CO2. Similarly, a total reduction of 79.96 ± 66.62 % in CO, 79.96 ± 66.62 % in NO2, 1.40 ± 0.70 % in PM10, and 74.29 ± 59.09 % in PM2.5 and 61.76 ± 44.67 % in CO2 in 2035. Finally, a total reduction 100 % in CO, 100 % in NO2, 10.12 ± 4.28 % in PM10, and 80.37 ± 67.18 % in PM2.5 and 74.53 ± 59.40 % in CO2 in 2050. The study also conducted a comprehensive sustainability assessment, showing that EV adoption contributes positively not only to environmental improvements but also to social equity and economic benefits, supporting long-term sustainable development goals. This work highlights the role of vehicular electrification as a critical strategy for improving air quality at both local and regional levels during the vehicle use phase
Pan-Caribbean Airlines: Unlocking Regional Aviation Potential
The Caribbean\u27s air transport system is facing significant challenges, including operational fragmentation, excessive costs, and inadequate inter-island connectivity. These challenges limit its ability to support the region’s heavily tourism-dependent economies. This research evaluates whether consolidating small Caribbean airlines into a single or virtual Pan-Caribbean carrier could transform regional air travel. Based on financial analysis, historical traffic data, and case comparisons with airline mergers in South America and the US, the paper simulates the anticipated efficiencies resulting from route consolidation, fleet standardization, and common operational services. The research concludes that consolidation may create a regional GDP impact of up to $3.3 billion and generate over 200,000 new jobs. Research highlights regulatory harmonization, stakeholder coordination, and governance reforms as essential conditions for success. Despite transparency challenges, a unified Caribbean airline offers a compelling path to regional economic integration, improved connectivity, and long-term sustainability in aviation
It Takes Two to Engage: Ethical AI Use in Research Skill Development for Security Studies Students
Various generative AI (GenAI) tools are increasingly utilized by students, creating a grey area where it is challenging to determine whether AI is used without violating academic integrity and whether it is assisting or impeding student engagement and success. To our knowledge, there is no definitive way to prove AI ghostwriting. AI is also increasingly utilized to enhance student engagement (Bauer et al., 2025; Chen et al., 2025). Recognizing that GenAI is here to stay, we are interested in finding the best way to leverage GenAI’s benefits while not jeopardizing educational integrity. Hence, the following question guided our efforts: How can GenAI tools be utilized to increase student engagement and student success? We believe this investigation may help determine/define a safe interval of AI utilization that is mutually agreeable between students and instructors. It takes two to dance, after all
