Tracking Coastal Inundation and Wave Dynamics at Public Beaches Using High-Resolution Surveillance Camera Images and Machine Learning
Barrier islands and beachfront systems are increasingly vulnerable to chronic inundation, which is driven by natural processes (tides, wave action, storm surge, etc.) and anthropogenic pressures, such as shoreline armoring and beach modification. These changes have contributed to the loss of natural dunes and narrowing beach widths, exacerbating the impacts of wave run-up beyond the influence of astronomical tides alone. Wave run-up, the movement of water up the beach beyond the still water line, is influenced by factors such as beach slope, wave height, and other coastal morphology, and plays a central role in determining the extent of coastal flooding. Remote sensing and machine learning offer tools to address the urgent need for early detection and prediction of coastal inundation events. This study applies image segmentation, an innovative computer vision technique, to time-lapse a publicly accessible beach camera livestream of South Dunlawton Beach in Volusia County. The images acquired from the camera livestreams are processed using convolutional techniques within Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), applying semantic segmentation of the beach environment to distinguish regions of water, wet sand, and dry sand. This protocol offers high spatial and temporal resolution as well as the predictive ability needed to evaluate impacts of inundation on wildlife habitats, recreational use, and shoreline infrastructure within the county. The findings from this study will be shared with local coastal managers and would provide insights into a potentially shifting beach face, which will have broad implications for habitat conservation and resilience planning under future sea-level rise scenarios

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Education to Drive Cross-Sector Innovation
As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes educational practices, particularly in technical fields such as uncrewed systems, robotics, and aviation/ aerospace, its integration raises promise and complexity. This exploratory study features an investigation of the impact AI tools adoption has on instruction, curriculum support, and workforce preparation, with a focus on online learning environments. Drawing from pilot survey data across aviation and aerospace education stakeholders and hands-on evaluation of AI video production platforms, findings reveal diverse applications, perceived benefits, and critical concerns, including ethical, pedagogical, and institutional challenges. Additionally, the analysis explored how AI-enabled education intersects with broader industry and government innovation goals, emphasizing the need for intentional alignment, ethical safeguards, and capacity-building. The authors offer recommendations to promote responsible AI use in education and enhance its value across sectors
Building the Future Flight Path: Funding Strategies for Advanced Air Mobility Education
As Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) transforms the aviation landscape, the demand for a workforce skilled in emerging technologies, systems integration, and regulatory frameworks is growing rapidly. Yet, educational programs capable of preparing this workforce often struggle to secure sustainable funding. This presentation examines how educators and industry leaders can collaborate to design, fund, and scale AAM-focused educational initiatives—drawing inspiration from models such as those championed by the Advanced Air Mobility Institute.
We will explore diverse funding pathways, including public–private partnerships, workforce innovation grants, and corporate investment in curriculum development. Special attention will be given to strategies that align academic programs with industry needs, creating pipelines for talent that strengthen both education and enterprise. Attendees will learn how to leverage joint research projects, internship programs, and community partnerships to attract financial and institutional support.
Through case studies and policy examples, we will identify successful approaches that ensure program longevity while promoting diversity, inclusion, and regional economic growth. By fostering alignment between educational outcomes and industry advancement, this session empowers stakeholders to create funding ecosystems that support both learning and innovation.
Ultimately, this presentation argues that coordinated investment between education and industry is not just beneficial—it is essential to realizing a sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready AAM sector
Persuasion Under Pressure: Trust-Based Communication for Climate Resilience
Despite general agreement that trust in a source increases a message’s persuasiveness, developing strategic messaging to increase perceived trustworthiness remains a challenge. This project tests a novel trust-building script for motivating extreme heat risk motivation to identify opportunities to simultaneously motivate sustainable adaptations to climate risk and rebuild trust in climate governance. Specifically, this study (N = 699) used a randomized controlled experiment to investigate if explicit appeals to trust and direct references to source trustworthiness might inadvertently trigger a backfire effect, reducing rather than increasing perceived trustworthiness. This presentation will share the experiment’s results as statistical analyses and applied best practice recommendations for sustainability stakeholders
Beyond the Climate Debate: Finding Common Ground Through Energy Scarcity
Public discourse around climate change is frequently stuck in ideological gridlock where one side emphasizes scientific evidence while the other distrusts expert and governmental messaging. This polarization prevents meaningful dialogue and collective action on energy transition. This study addresses that problem by proposing a reframing of climate discourse through a scarcity-based perspective on fossil fuels: global energy demand continues to rise even as fossil fuel reserves are finite. By shifting attention from abstract scientific projections to shared economic and psychological realities, this framing may resonate with values across polarized groups. This research will survey the student body of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University using a two-part instrument. In part one, the truncated Six Americas Survey (SASSY) will classify respondents into climate-attitude segments, establishing an ideological baseline. In part two, participants will answer a guided progression of short questions assessing beliefs about fossil fuel availability, global energy demand trends, and price implications – eg., are fossil fuels limited? Are developing nations increasing their energy consumption? Will rising demand raise energy costs? Is fossil fuel reliance viable long term? Comparative analysis across SASSY segments will evaluate whether this economic reasoning pathway fosters convergence in willingness to support energy transition policies. If shared recognition of limited energy resources encourages cooperation, then scarcity-based framing could provide a scalable communication strategy uniting diverse citizens around sustainable energy solutions
Disentangling Atmosphere and Sky: Ontology, Space Debris, and Moral Mattering
Space exploration activities generate novel problems for philosophical consideration. As space activities increasingly populate Earth’s orbital environment with both operating space infrastructure and junk, humanity is faced with new threats. One significant worry is Kessler syndrome, a potential cascade of space debris that could trap humans on Earth while destroying satellite infrastructure. Approaching the growing problem of space debris from the perspective of environmental philosophy reveals a host of additional concerns within environmental ethics, aesthetics, and politics. Adequately considering the effects of increasing space debris, as well as the particular environmental ramifications of such accumulation, requires (re)consideration of ordinarily backgrounded environmental objects – the sky and the atmosphere – for the application and extension of environmental ethics to humanity’s activities in outer space
