Simulation To Reduce Medical Errors And Improve Patient Safety In Anesthesia
Get PDFOver the past two decades, simulation in medical education has been adopted by health education programs and established as a proven method of education for health care students and providers. Despite the addition of simulation to healthcare education, medical errors are ranked as the third leading cause of death in the United States. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the translation of simulation education into increased patient safety and reduction of medical errors in anesthesia. Overall, the literature reviewed confirms that simulation can be used to reduce medical errors and improve patient safety. Additional correlational research between simulation reduction in medical errors and increases in patient safety research is needed
Current Recommendations For The Perioperative Management Of Patients On Buprenorphine: A Case Study
Get PDFAccording to the US Department of Health and Human Services, more than 2 million Americans suffer from opioid use disorder (DHHS, 2020). Opioid maintenance therapy (OMT) for OUD has been shown to reduce the rates of inpatient hospitalization and overall opioid-related mortality (Quaye & Zhang, 2019). Buprenorphine is a partial mu receptor agonist and kappa receptor antagonist that is used frequently by patients on OMT. Beginning in 2010 annual prescriptions for buprenorphine products have increased dramatically (Lembke, Ottestad, & Schmiesing, 2019).
With the rising level of chronic pain and opioid use nationally, more and more patients taking buprenorphine are presenting to the perioperative setting. The pharmacology of buprenorphine presents a unique challenge to the anesthesia provider particularly with regards to achieving adequate pain control during and after surgery. A review of the literature indicates that there are no unified guidelines on the perioperative management of buprenorphine. The focus of this paper is to discuss the unique pharmacology of buprenorphine and review the current literature on the best perioperative management strategies for patients on buprenorphine. Ethical Considerations For Outpatient Behavioral Healthcare In North Texas
Get PDFThe purpose of this Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study was to examine caregivers’ perceptions of practices for outpatient behavioral health care. Effort was made to gain insight into the components of ethical service delivery. Significant data on the providers’ perceptions of care was identified in literature reviews, though it was not the case for perspectives of consumers or caregivers. This population has been identified as one which is likely to experience unaffordable, fragmented, and confusing behavioral health systems (Baker, 2015). Attempts to inform research by addressing the quality of treatment was a focus. The Research Problem: Since 2016, the suicide and child mortality rate for children has increased by 27% in the north Texas region (Smith, 2019). Adults who need behavioral healthcare are displaced and being taken to county jails (Gately, 2017). Qualitative research methods were structured interviews in conjunction with the IPA research design to learn of lived experiences. The eight participants were caregivers to consumers receiving behavioral healthcare from the Serene Horizons Health Center (SHHC), a pseudonym to maintain confidentiality. The study sought to answer: • What services have caregivers deemed as integral for outpatient program compliance? • What services do caregivers attribute as motivational forces which encourage consumers to actively participate in available services?
Findings identified consistent perspectives from all participants. Perceptions of integral factors for program compliance yielded quality service, professional conduct, and accessibility to services. Factors which encouraged motivation were identified as the consumers feeling cared for, supported, and motivated. Value was identified in experiencing a provider who cared for them by being supportive and motivating. Service provision will require rejuvenation, interagency education and collaboration, and advocating with a sense of urgency at the legislative level. Ethical behavioral healthcare should be practiced in all health care disciplines
Soft-Skill Development In Co-Curricular Programs: An Evaluation Of A Community College Student Leadership Program
Get PDFColleges are vital for the provision of a trained workforce. As of 2017, over 1,100 community colleges were serving about 41% of the undergraduates across the nation. The emphasis on preparing students to enter the labor market has led to colleges developing integrated academic and co-curricular programs. Many professionals in higher education believe that education happens best in a truly integrative learning environment, where both academic and student affairs programs are used to educate the student.
The New Hampshire Community College Student Leadership program was developed to help students gain soft-skills, as identified by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. The objective of this summative evaluation was to discover if the NHCC SLP contributes to the soft skill development of student participants. Two research questions guided the study:
RQ1: How do participants in the New Hampshire Community Student Leadership Program perceive the program to have helped them develop soft-skills?
RQ2: Do students who participated in the New Hampshire Community College Student Leadership Program feel prepared to enter the workforce at the time of their graduation?
As a summative program review, no human participants were used for this study. The evaluation highlighted several NHCC SLP strategies that could be used beyond their student leadership program. The research identified the importance of building learning outcomes into co-curricular programs and the impact that experiential learning has on student engagement. The findings support how co-curricular programs can help prepare students for the workforce. The results revealed that students participated in large part because of their intrinsic motivation; the theoretical framework of self-determination theory supported this finding. Additional data is needed to determine the long term benefits of soft-skill development through co-curricular programs. Recommendations include the need to distinguish between extracurricular activities and co-curricular activities. Co-curricular activities should be based on intentional program design and include targeted learning outcomes. Additional research should be conducted on the long term benefit of soft skill development at the collegiate level. Consideration should be given to the future study of co-curricular programs and soft-skill development utilizing the Goal Content Theory
Understanding The Importance Of Formative Assessment Programs In Undergraduate Medical Education
Get PDFThe purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the impact and relationship formative assessment in undergraduate medical education has on summative assessment performance. Previous research has investigated the important role formative assessment has on the broad education process (Menéndez, Napa, Moreira, & Zambrano, 2019). This research study examined that role in undergraduate medical education. This research study utilized a preexisting de-identified data set consisting of 332 third-year medical student assessment records from five different cohorts. The initial analyses investigated the differences in summative assessment performance for students who completed a formative assessment program during their third year of medical school and those who did not experience the formative assessment program in seven core clerkship disciplines. Further analyses investigated student records for relationships between undergraduate medical education student formative assessment program performance and summative examination performance in the seven core clerkship disciplines. The research study quantitative data analyses evaluated performance differences and relationships among groups of undergraduate medical students exposed to a formative assessment program at the study site. The researcher found multiple statistically significant results. Exposure to the formative assessment program had a statistically significant impact on summative assessment performance. Furthermore, formative assessment performance had a statistically significant relationship with summative assessment performance. These findings hold importance for students in assessing their knowledge strengths and weaknesses, faculty members in the design of their educational plans, and organizational leadership when making decisions about support for formative assessment programs at their institutions

Examining The Communication Strategies Utilized During An Organizational Change Within Universities’ Branch Campuses
Get PDFIn this interpretive phenomenological study, the researcher sought to understand the lived experiences of branch campus administrators’ perceptions of the communication strategies utilized during a pervasive organizational change. Minimal research has been conducted surrounding the specifics of the communication strategies that have effectively and successfully matriculated branch campus administrators through an organizational change. To gain a better understanding of the lived experiences and perceptions of the communication strategies utilized during a branch campus organizational change, 35 members of the National Association of Branch Campus Administrators completed a qualifying survey. A semistructured interview was conducted with 10 branch campus administrators who had worked at a nonprofit, 4-year, regionally accredited university within the United States and had experienced a branch campus organizational change within the last five years. Data collected from the interviews revealed that there were connections between the organizational relationship of the main campus with its branch campuses and participant perceptions of the effectiveness of the communication strategies utilized. Furthermore, branch campus leaders played an intricate role in how well their teams received information, remained motivated during the organizational change, and successfully matriculated through the change. Lastly, empathetic communication emerged as a necessary component when branch campus administrators engaged with their staff throughout the organizational change

This sepia toned and matted photograph is of the room of Agnes Safford, probably used by her from 1920 to 1925, the years when she was serving as preceptress and head of English. She later moved into Hollister Cottage.

Middle School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Homework Assignments Effective At Increasing Student Homework Completion
Get PDFThe purpose of this qualitative exploratory research study with a phenomenological research design was to gain an understanding of the phenomenon regarding which homework assignments, as perceived by middle school teachers, most effectively resulted in students submitting completed assignments. This study fills a gap and helps explain which homework assignments are more effective at increasing homework assignment completion for middle school students. The constructivist theory guided the conceptual framework. Data analysis was conducted on data collected though surveys, in-depth interviews with middle school teachers, and a review of archival homework samples. Through this phenomenological study four themes emerged regarding teacher perceptions of which homework assignments are more effective: routine homework, homework with clear expectations, homework that students see as achievable, and homework assignments that considered the executive functioning of students. It was found that middle school teachers’ perceptions about increasing student homework assignment completion reflect the value of structural supports, ongoing homework development, and the assignment of the homework itself.
