    Social Determinants of Health Month: An Expansion Into Interprofessional Education

    Throughout the month of November, various student groups will host guest lecturers, student and physician panels, and alternative opportunities for the UNE community to learn about factors impacting health. During SDoHM, UNE graduate students, faculty, staff and community members will explore conditions in which people live, grow, work, learn, practice religion, and age that impact individual health, while also learning about systems of oppression that perpetuate those conditions and disparities in healthcare. The events will encourage participants to think about how we might affect positive change in our communities and in our future patient populations. Furthermore, throughout SDoHM, students will be provided resources and virtual learning opportunities about the intersections of healthcare and social injustice, environmental racism, and disenfranchisement, underrepresentation, and discrimination in medicine.https://dune.une.edu/cecefall2021/1007/thumbnail.jp

    An Exploration Of How Millenial Financial Aid Administrators In Higher Education Experience Leadership Through Their Attitudes, Beliefs, And Values

    As the largest generational cohort in the workforce, millennials are poised and ready to take over the leadership helm. Even with the plethora of data about millennials, there is still a gap in the research literature about millennial leaders in higher education. Currently, higher education leadership research typically focuses on executive roles although providing access, helping students persist, and getting them graduated thrive in offices like financial aid. The purpose of this study was to explore how attitudes, beliefs, and values influence the leadership experiences of millennial financial aid administrators in higher education. This study sought a diverse group of financial aid administrators to address two questions, what are the leadership experiences of millennial financial aid administrators in higher education based on their attitudes, beliefs, and values and do psychographics (attitudes, beliefs, and values) have an impact on how millennial financial aid administrators in higher education describe their leadership style? Using semi structured interview questions rooted in addressing attitudes, beliefs, and values, the analysis uncovered five major themes from the participants’ experiences associated with understanding psychographics, the adaptable millennial, disconnect to empathy, holistic financial aid practices, and a need for progression. This study showed that experiences can be expressed through psychographics, and attitudes, beliefs, and values can influence a person\u27s leadership style. Based on the study’s findings it was recommended that the role of the financial aid administrator be re-imaged to align with current generational leaders and educating campus partners about the dynamics and influence of financial aid offices

    Investigating Larval Spillover From Oyster Aquaculture Through Geospatial Habitat Suitability Index Modeling: A Damariscotta River Estuary Case Study

    The eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) supports the ecological function of estuarine ecosystems by creating biogenic reef habitat (Purchon, 2013), and positively influencing coastal biogeochemistry in intertidal, and subtidal environments (Humphries et al., 2016; Ray and Fulweiler, 2020). As anthropogenic impacts continue to influence the health of marine environments globally (Halpern et al., 2008), oyster reef restoration is gaining increased attention as a means of maintaining the function of estuarine systems (Beck et al, 2011). Shellfish aquaculture has gained increased attention, contributing 21% of all aquaculture production globally (FAO 2020). Shellfish aquaculture provides a suite of social-ecological benefits while contributing to provisioning and supporting ecosystem services including nutrient removal, water clarification, coastal protection, and habitat creation (Gentry et al. 2020; Grizzle et al. 2008; Dame and Kenneth, 2011; Kellogg et al. 2014). In this way, shellfish aquaculture can exist in synergy with ecosystem processes, resulting in positive environmental outcomes while creating livelihoods through supply of seafood and commercial products (referred to as restorative aquaculture) (Blanchard et al., 2017). Despite the range of ecosystem services provided from bivalve aquaculture, the role of larval subsidy in population restoration has yet to be recognized (van der Schatte Olivier et al., 2020). However, evidence of green lipped mussel (P. canaliculus) restoration via larval subsidy has been documented (Norrie et al., 2020). Habitat suitability index (HSI) models have proven effective in facilitating population restoration of the American oyster in estuaries of the eastern United States by providing spatially explicit information regarding the quality of habitat over broad areas of interest (Soniat and Brody, 1988; Barnes et al., 2007; Starke et al., 2011; Pollack et al., 2012; Linhoss et al., 2016; Theuerkauf and Lipcius, 2016; Puckett et al., 2018). This study employs a geospatial HSI model for the eastern oyster to investigate a recent population resurgence in an estuary where oysters were once extirpated, the Damariscotta River estuary (DRE), Maine, USA. As a means of internal validation, we combine HSI model predictions with local ecological knowledge gained through participatory interviews and surveys of local shellfish harvesters targeting eastern oysters, oyster aquaculture producers operating within the estuary, and researchers familiar with the system. By assessing the viability of incidental restoration resulting from larval subsidy from oyster aquaculture, this study explores the implications of low-cost restoration strategies which integrate fisheries, aquaculture, and conservation interests within a reciprocal conservation paradigm

    The Public-School Environment And Day Treatment Programming Perceived Positive Environmental Supports As Antecedent Stimuli In A Public-School Day Treatment Classroom

    The physical environment of a classroom can serve to meet the unique needs of students, but the focus on the specific tangible elements of the classroom is limited. There are minimal guidelines that inform teachers as to how to use these elements of the environment in teaching practices. The decision-making process for these situations is often left to inexperienced teachers and is not fully utilized as a resource within the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative research is to examine the environmental factors that contribute to a positive learning environment for public school students who exhibit challenging behavior. Based on the experiences of professional staff, this study will specifically identify and determine some of the beneficial antecedent stimuli, or the physical aspects, of a learning space for those students whose behavior precludes them from accessing their typically developing peers. The remote interview procedure for this study included fifteen educators who had worked in a public-school day treatment program within a public school district in Southern Maine. An interview was the tool used to gain qualitative data for this study. In general, the participants shared that access to space, having specifically trained adults, and pro-actively managing the environment were all positive contributors to perceived success. This study shares specific perceptions and interpretations of staff members working with a unique population of students and offers future research ideas in the areas of antecedent manipulation towards a more successful public-school day treatment environment

    A Preliminary Abundance Estimate Of An Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Oxyrinchus) Contingent Within An Open Riverine System

    Abundance estimates are essential for fisheries management, but estimating the abundance of open populations with low recapture rates has historically been unreliable. However, by using mark-recapture data modulated with survivability parameters obtained from analysis of acoustic telemetry data, more accurate abundance estimates can be made for species that exhibit these characteristics. One such species is the Atlantic sturgeon, for which abundance estimates were designated a research priority following precipitous population declines throughout the 20th century. We addressed this research need in the Saco River Estuary (SRE), a system where the Atlantic sturgeon has been extensively studied using mark-recapture and acoustic telemetry methods since 2009. These data were analyzed using Bayesian analysis of a Lincoln-Peterson estimator, constrained with parameters from a Cormack-Jolly-Seber model, to provide an initial abundance estimate for the system. The resulting estimate indicated that approximately 3 299 (95% Credible Interval: 1 462–6 828) Atlantic sturgeon utilize the SRE yearly, suggesting that the SRE provides critical foraging habitat to a large contingent of the species within the Gulf of Maine. The present study demonstrated the method utilized herein was effective in generating a reasonable estimate of abundance in an open system where recapture events are rare, and therefore may provide a valuable technique for supplying initial estimates of fish abundance in additional systems that display similar characteristics

    Massachusetts High School Teachers’ Perceptions Of Transitions In Teaching And Assessment Related To The Next Generation Science Standards

    The experiences and perceptions of high school science teachers with the transitions in teaching and assessment related to the adoption of the 2016 Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Framework based on the Next Generation Science Standards were studied in this interpretative phenomenological analysis. The Next Generation Science Standards incorporated both traditional disciplinary content ideas and the new science and engineering practices (NGSS Lead States, 2013). Teachers were required to develop new materials, and difficulty in developing new ways of teaching and assessing science (Friedrichsen and Barnett, 2018; Kawasaki and Sandoval, 2020; Wilde, 2018) was exacerbated by the delay in high-stakes testing until June 2022. The results of this study were captured in five main themes: Memorization and Rote Tasks vs Deeper Understanding, Teachers Value Collaboration and Reflection, The Role of the Standards and How They are Tested, Positive Perceptions Related to the Science and Engineering Practices, Preparing Emotionally Resilient, Scientifically Literate Citizens. All participants perceived the new standards for teaching and assessing science in Massachusetts to be an improvement over the 2006 STE Framework. The participants had overwhelmingly positive experiences teaching the 2016 STE Framework to their students and perceived their students to have had positive outcomes directly or indirectly related to the new standards. The design and impact of high-stakes exams should be considered by state-level testing authorities when implementing new science standards like the inclusion of the science and engineering practices. District and building-level administrators should focus on providing support to their high school science teachers transitioning their teaching and assessing to meet the requirements of standards based on NGSS

    The Rehabilitation Of A 75-Year-Old Male Presenting With A Right Hip Flexor Strain Concomitant With Numerous Psychosocial Factors: A Case Report

    Background: Musculoskeletal disorders, often well understood, are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Concomitant psychosocial factors add a layer of complexity to the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the potential impact psychological factors have in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders, specifically the rehabilitation of a right hip flexor strain. Case Description: The patient was a 75-year-old male referred to outpatient physical therapy for the assessment of a right hip flexor strain, presenting with psychosocial factors including anxiety and kinesiophobia. Procedural interventions included patient education, neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic exercise, and manual therapy, but lacked psychosocial assessment. Outcomes: The patient was seen for 16 visits over eight week’s time, including the initial evaluation. His pain rating score improved from 8/10 on initial evaluation to 6/10 on discharge in accordance to the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). After four weeks of continued physical therapy intervention after his re-evaluation, he was referred back to his primary care provider for further diagnostic testing as his progress began to plateau. Discussion: This case report highlights how psychosocial factors such as kinesiophobia and anxiety can complicate patient care. While physical therapists are often well versed in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, numerous external factors make it difficult for physical therapists to properly assess psychosocial factors. Further research should be conducted regarding the importance of psychosocial assessment in the context of musculoskeletal disorder rehabilitation

They are all around us but to see them we have to acknowledge our part in keeping them alive and healthy. We feed them with ignorance, lassitude, apathy. We nurture them in our refusal to believe that we too have a part of them in us. Through inaction we invite them to spread suffering, to gnaw on the bones of new prey each day. Yes—we might even watch them rampage and then turn away. It is painful taking the role of St. George. One invites trouble and danger when they report the sighting of dragons. You might even be thought unhinged. It is dangerous to buck the systems that have been put in place for the breeding of dragons. Dragons are powerful. They are not afraid because they are the warriors for injustice, the purveyors of pain, the cultivators of chaos. The one thing that repels dragons is truth. They can be vanquished by compassion and kindness; they recoil at generosity and love may transform the worst of them into potent allies for justice. Do we desire obliteration or salvation? It really is now or never. The dragons are howling at the ramparts of everything we hold dear. It will take the strength of many to do the work that must be done. It will require a commitment to honesty and equality, education and frugality. It will require selflessness and love. These dragons have been plaguing me—I had hoped that they would go away, that somebody else would do the hard work, take on the very real danger but however much I struggled to ignore them they were there in every headline and everyday life, even at the movies. I began to draw them, to try and visualize their faces. I was surprised that they didn’t look like the dragons of my childhood. Dragons assume the strangest forms. I realized they depend on our love of comfort and leisure. Some even looked innocent until I peeled back the layers and realized that much of what I have is built on the backs of dragons. Take a look around. You’ll see them too.
