Cranberry Extract’s Potential To Reduce Streptococcus Mutans
Get PDFStreptococcus mutans is the most prominent cariogenic bacteria in the oral cavity due to strong adhesion properties. Reducing the leading cariogenic bacteria in dental caries is important for the longevity of natural teeth. The anti-adhesion effects from cranberry derivatives could be helpful in reducing the amount of S. mutans. This literature review aims to determine whether cranberry extract based mouth rinse is effective in reduction of the S. mutans bacterial load. Current evidence seems to indicate that cranberry derivatives in mouth rinses can effectively reduce numbers of this specific bacterium in the oral cavity. As a result, cranberry extracts in non-dialyzable material (NDM) form could potentially be an alternative to antibiotic mouth rinses including chlorhexidine rinse.https://dune.une.edu/dh_studpost/1012/thumbnail.jp
The Benefits And Barriers To Arts Integration: Arts Accessibility In Public Montessori
Get PDFThis mixed-method exploratory case study investigates the research question: To what extent do pre-K through eighth-grade public Montessori school teachers perceive that their professional knowledge and abilities, experiences, and resources impact their capacity to integrate arts into their general classroom curriculum? Public Montessori teachers from five public-choice Montessori schools in a school district of the suburban and urban areas of southeastern South Carolina were invited to participate. The teachers in these public Montessori schools have varied levels of education and professional development experience with the arts in education. Some participants were general education teachers prior to becoming Montessori teachers due to the transition of traditional program elementary schools to Montessori schools. Survey questions addressed themes and subthemes related to integrating the arts with core curriculum subjects including math, history, science, English language arts, and social justice and humanities. The subthemes were also designed to delineate perceptions of experience or knowledge with visual arts, music, dance, poetry, drama, and theater. Data were gathered from the participant responses and a district program description, including professional development offerings. To analyze the data, the research question themes were coded by the field annotations: abilities, knowledge, resources, benefits, and barriers. The coding involved identifying patterns and similarities in the teachers’ responses of their perceptions related to arts integration in their Montessori classrooms. The overall results indicated the teacher participants believe that students who exhibit excess energy would benefit from an increase in movement, collaboration, and music, as well as a significant increase in exposure to the arts. Largely, the teachers indicated feeling uncertain about integrating the arts into their Montessori classrooms due to barriers such as lack of resources, time, and professional development experience. Therefore, it is recommended that educational leaders create professional development opportunities through collaboration with the arts team at each school, the community arts professionals, and the district administration

Contrary to popular belief, dragons exist. They are all around us but to see them we have to acknowledge our part in keeping them alive and healthy. We feed them with ignorance, lassitude, apathy. We nurture them in our refusal to believe that we too have a part of them in us. Through inaction we invite them to spread suffering, to gnaw on the bones of new prey each day. Yes—we might even watch them rampage and then turn away.
It is painful taking the role of St. George. One invites trouble and danger when they report the sighting of dragons. You might even be thought unhinged. It is dangerous to buck the systems that have been put in place for the breeding of dragons. Dragons are powerful. They are not afraid because they are the warriors for injustice, the purveyors of pain, the cultivators of chaos.
The one thing that repels dragons is truth. They can be vanquished by compassion and kindness; they recoil at generosity and love may transform the worst of them into potent allies for justice. Do we desire obliteration or salvation? It really is now or never. The dragons are howling at the ramparts of everything we hold dear. It will take the strength of many to do the work that must be done. It will require a commitment to honesty and equality, education and frugality. It will require selflessness and love.
These dragons have been plaguing me—I had hoped that they would go away, that somebody else would do the hard work, take on the very real danger but however much I struggled to ignore them they were there in every headline and everyday life, even at the movies. I began to draw them, to try and visualize their faces. I was surprised that they didn’t look like the dragons of my childhood. Dragons assume the strangest forms. I realized they depend on our love of comfort and leisure. Some even looked innocent until I peeled back the layers and realized that much of what I have is built on the backs of dragons.

Domestic Broils: Shakers, Antebellum Marriage, And The Narratives Of Mary And Joseph Dyer
Get PDFIn 1813, Joseph Dyer, his wife Mary, and their five children joined the Shaker community in Enfield, New Hampshire. Joseph quickly adapted to the Shaker way of life, but Mary chafed under its strictures and eventually left the community two years later. When the local elders and her husband refused to release the couple\u27s children to Mary, she embarked on what would become a fifty-year campaign against the Shakers, beginning with the publication in 1818 of A Brief Statement of the Sufferings of Mary Dyer. The following year the Shakers countered by publishing Joseph\u27s A Compendious Narrative, a scathing attack on what the title page called the character, disposition and conduct of Mary Dyer.
The Dyers\u27 dueling accounts of the breakup of their marriage form the core of Domestic Broils. In Mary\u27s telling, the deceptions of a cruel husband, backed by an unyielding Shaker hierarchy, destroyed what had once been a happy, productive family. Joseph\u27s narrative counters these claims by alleging that Mary abused her children, neglected her husband, and engaged in extramarital affairs.
In her introduction to the volume, Elizabeth De Wolfe places the Dyers\u27 marital dispute in a broader historical context, drawing on their personal testimony to examine connected but conflicting views of marriage, family life, and Shakerism in the early republic. She also shows how the growing world of print facilitated the transformation of a private family quarrel into a public debate. Salacious, riveting, and immensely popular throughout New England, the Dyers\u27 narratives not only captured imaginations but also reflected public anxieties over rapid cultural change in antebellum America.

Sheltered English Immersion In Massachusetts: Examining The Reflections Of Career And Technical Teachers With Regard To A Mandated “One-Size-Fits-All” Professional Development Model
Get PDFEducators in Massachusetts have sought to use multiple professional development models to fill the gap of what bilingual programs once provided. A consequence of the 2002 vote indicated that all teachers have the responsibility to teach language to English language learners (ELLs) in Massachusetts. With all this change in federal and state policy, the only modification to the teacher preservice model for career and technical teachers was the addition of one required professional development series on providing sheltered English immersion to ELLs in their vocational-technical programs. However, the current SEI professional development model may not be able to provide for the pedagogical needs of career and technical teachers in Massachusetts.
Preliminary research provided valuable insight and indicated the need for additional studies and highlighted a gap in the research. The study’s research problem was that career and technical teachers of ELLs must implement the prescribed pedagogy of a one-size-fits-all professional development model. Primary studies have suggested that this topic has remained in its infancy and thus requires a more intensive review at the local and national levels. The purpose of this qualitative interpretative phenomenological study was to examine career and technical teachers’ reflections of their perceptions and experiences of implementing the prescribed pedagogy of the mandated one-size-fits-all sheltered English immersion professional development model in Massachusetts. Massachusetts school leaders and educators are held accountable for student growth and progress; therefore, they must answer for a decline in achievement, although many lack adequate training to support their ELLs
The Role Of Awake Fiberoptic Intubation In The Difficult Airway
Get PDFAwake fiberoptic intubation (AFOI) is a specialized technique used by anesthesia providers to decrease the risk of airway management during tracheal intubation of a predicted difficult airway. The rate of AFOI has decreased, and the advent of the video laryngoscope may be a contributing factor. However, there is still a need for AFOI. This case study reviews the relevance of, current indications for, and best practices for performing AFOI. Is AFOI still relevant in current anesthesia practice when managing airway difficulties such as limited mouth opening, obstructive sleep apnea, limited neck extension, head and neck pathology, morbid obesity, and progressive airway compromise? The Difficult Airway Society’s 2020 guidelines for AFOI in adults is used as an example to evaluate the performance and outcomes of the case study presented in this paper
The Lived Experience Of Rural CTE Teachers As Members Of The Secondary Education Teaching Corps
Get PDFThe secondary education system in the United States provides the opportunity for students to earn a high school diploma in preparation for post-secondary college and career. These students are taught by certified high school teachers with similar pedagogy but deliver instruction in different content areas. This qualitative study was conducted to understand how rural CTE high school teachers describe their lived experience of being a member of the secondary education teaching corps. Guided by two research questions that ask (1) how rural CTE teachers describe their teacher professional identity and (2) how rural CTE teachers characterize the role of vocational training in secondary education, the study used transcendental phenomenology as a methodology to explicate data collected through semi-structured interviews of six certified rural CTE high school teachers. The explication process followed Moustakas’ (1994) modification of the van Kaam method of analysis of phenomenological data. From the development of individual textural-structural descriptions of the phenomenon, a composite synthesis of data resulted in a description of the essences and meanings of the experience of teacher professional identity by the participant group. These findings indicate rural CTE high school teachers exhibit attributes of Teacher Professional Identity and Teacher Agency in their lived experience as a secondary education teacher
