The Effects Of Mindfulness On Stress Reduction And Academic Performance In Students Studying Health Sciences

    Get PDF
Students studying health sciences are often consumed by rigorous curricula and demanding clinical schedules. The extensive concentration and commitment required of these students can be exhausting. This can lead to stress, poor academic performance, substance use and a decreased quality of life (Fauzi et al., 2021, Flowers & Bernard, 2020, Gao et al., 2022, & Melaku et al., 2015). Recent trends in academia have led to an integration of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs into the curriculum of graduate and undergraduate schools. Studies have shown that a consistent practice of some form of mindfulness is associated with a decrease in stress levels and improved academic performance (Flowers & Bernard, 2020; Lampe & Muller-Hilke, 2021)

The Shared Experiences Of Educators In Grades 7–12 Who Implement Lessons In Social–Emotional Learning Curriculum

    Get PDF
Social–emotional learning (SEL) is used in public school classrooms throughout the United States. The problem that this researcher addressed in this study was that minimal understanding exists of the lived experiences of teachers who implement SEL in Colorado public schools in Grades 7–12. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore and to provide a clearer understanding of the lived experiences of six educators who implement SEL in Grades 7–12 in Colorado public schools. The study fills a gap in literature in understanding the experiences of teachers who use SEL in middle and high school. The literature review revealed three themes: (a) the importance of teachers, (b) the evolution of SEL, and (c) the significance of SEL. Six teachers from public schools across Colorado participated in semi-structured interviews via Zoom. Thematic analysis was used to find patterns and code data. In this study, this researcher found four main themes: (a) teacher buy-in, (b) identify emotions, (c) safety and trust, and (d) value of relationships. Data collected also revealed subthemes: (a) the need for students to identify emotions through vocabulary, self-awareness, and coping skills; (b) build safety and trust in classrooms, and (c) the value of relationships in classrooms between students and teachers. From the findings, this researcher recommended action for improvements in professional development and coaching for educators who implement SEL. Other recommendations for future study were presented for continued improvement in the field of education for students and teachers

The problem explored in this qualitative phenomenological study was the need to understand the lived experiences of primary and secondary teachers at one state-approved private special education school in Connecticut regarding disparities among racially and ethnically diverse students with emotional or learning disorders in special education (Cavendish et al., 2018; Jackson et al., 2016; Leung, 2021; Lhamon et al., 2019; Skrtic et al., 2021). The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of primary and secondary teachers at one state-approved private special education school in Connecticut regarding disparities among racially and ethnically diverse students with emotional or learning disorders in special education (Cavendish et al., 2018; Leung, 2021). Themes that emerged from the literature were equity requirements in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (Individuals With Disabilities Education Act [IDEA], 2019), disparities among racially and ethnically diverse students with special needs, causes of disparities among racially and ethnically diverse students with special needs, and educational practices to support racially and ethnically diverse students with special needs. Data for this study were gathered from semi structured interviews from six participants who taught at Maplewood Academy (pseudonym). The findings of this study highlight the existence of disparities and emphasize the ongoing need for research to address the issue of inequities among racially and ethnically diverse students with emotional or learning disorders in special education. The lived experiences gained from this study can contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding disparities among students with emotional or learning disorders, prompting further exploration and potential interventions

Opioid Addiction And Its Effect On Oral Health

    Get PDF
Opioid addiction in this nation is an extremely prevalent public health crisis. The same can be said about dental caries and other oral health conditions. Research shows that opioid addiction and dental caries have a strong correlation, even former opioid addicts are more likely to have caries. The studies reviewed for this paper include an Iranian study, one on the effects of use during pregnancy, a systematic review and the inequities among various marginalized groups. It is clear there are harmful effects of opioid abuse on our oral cavity. The hope is that in the future more research will be conducted to truly understand the scientific effects of opioid abuse on oral health and caries.https://dune.une.edu/dh_studpost/1022/thumbnail.jp
