    Natural Language Processing with machine learning for anomaly detection on system call logs

    Host intrusion detection systems and machine learning have been studied for many years especially on datasets like KDD99. Current research and systems are focused on low training and processing complex problems such as system call returns, which lack the system call arguments and potential traces of exploits run against a system. With respect to malware and vulnerabilities, signatures are relied upon, and the potential for natural language processing of the resulting logs and system call traces needs further experimentation. This research looks at unstructured raw system call traces from x86_64 bit GNU Linux operating systems with natural language processing and supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques to identify current and unseen threats. The research explores whether these tools are within the skill set of information security professionals, or require data science professionals. The research makes use of an academic and modern system call dataset from Leipzig University and applies two machine learning models based on decision trees. Random Forest as the supervised algorithm is compared to the unsupervised Isolation Forest algorithm for this research, with each experiment repeated after hyper-parameter tuning. The research finds conclusive evidence that the Isolation Forest Tree algorithm is effective, when paired with a Principal Component Analysis, in identifying anomalies in the modern Leipzig Intrusion Detection Data Set (LID-DS) dataset combined with samples of executed malware from the Virus Total Academic dataset. The base or default model parameters produce sub-optimal results, whereas using a hyper-parameter tuning technique increases the accuracy to within promising levels for anomaly and potential zero day detection.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Computer Science, 202

    Effect of a school-based health intervention on the non-communicable disease risk status of schoolchildren from disadvantaged communities

    Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and dyslipidaemia are a global public health concern, but more so in low- income countries where the underprivileged are exposed to unhealthy lifestyle practices with limited access to primary health care. Poor dietary habits and physical inactivity have also led to the unprecedented rise of NCD risk factors among school- aged children, which places them at greater risk of disease later in life. These NCDs are largely driven by obesity which has continued to rise in sub-Saharan Africa. However, high levels of undernutrition (such as stunting, underweight and wasting) among children are also present, thereby translating to a dual burden of malnutrition. Promoting regular physical activity (PA) among children is crucial for the health of future generations as it assists in weight reduction, improves insulin sensitivity, reduces blood pressure and is associated with good health and wellbeing. However, physical education (PE), the most obvious vehicle to develop the motor abilities of children, creating opportunities for their sports skills development and educating learners about the importance of PA as a lifestyle, has long been overlooked since the transformation of the South African school curriculum. Furthermore, many in-service PE teachers were not trained to teach the new multi-disciplinary Life Skills and Life Orientation subjects, of which PE forms a small part. Evidence shows that many PE teachers lack the content knowledge and practical skills to implement the subject, which raises the question of how many children, especially those in low-income communities, are participating in quality PE needed to foster healthy lifestyles and prevent the risk of NCDs. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of a 20- week school-based health intervention on NCD risk factors of primary schoolchildren from low-income schools in Gqeberha, South Africa. Methods: A cluster randomised control trial was used to test a 20-week intervention, which included three components, namely [1] the KaziKidz toolkit (comprised of pre- prepared PE, health, hygiene and nutrition lessons, equipment for PE, and painted games) [2] a PE coach (human movement science graduate to assist teachers) and [3]two 90-min training workshops. Eight schools were randomly selected to participatein the study: four intervention schools received the KaziKidz toolkit, while the externalsupport components were staggered across three intervention schools, and the Chapter 1: Introduction 2 remaining four schools served as the control group. Altogether 961 children (491 boys and 511 girls) from grades 4 to 6 (8 - 13 years old, M=10.88±1.19 yrs) participated In the study. Demographic information and socio-economic status were captured with a questionnaire. Further measures included height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, glycated haemoglobin, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, accelerometer-based PA and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Results: Cross-sectional baseline data showed that 43.1% of the sample presented with at least one NCD risk factor, and 17% presented with an elevated clustered risk score (CRS). In addition, higher CRF and moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) were associated with a lowered CRS whereby an elevated CRS was halved for every 49 min increase in MVPA (95% CI 27 - 224) or every 2.17 ml/kg/min increase in CRF, as determined via estimated VO2max (95% CI 1.66 - 3.12). Overall, 13% of the cohort were underweight, 12% overweight, 7% obese, and 64% engaged in an average of 60 min MVPA per day. The results also identified an inverse association between body mass index categories and the total duration of MVPA achieved per day as children categorised as underweight to normal‐weight (boys: OR = 3.89, 95% CI: 2.18 - 6.93; girls: OR =1.78, 95% CI: 1.13 - 2.80) were more likely to engage in 60 min per day of MVPA than overweight to obese children. Finally, the school-based health intervention results revealed improvements in children's NCD risk factors and increased MVPA levels when the intervention conditions included the workshops and, in some cases, the PE coach. The KaziKidz toolkit (on its own) showed little to no improvements in NCD risk factors and MVPA levels. Conclusion: School-based health interventions have the potential to improve the NCD risk factors of children attending low-income schools in South Africa. These findings also add to our understanding of implementing interventions in settings where teachers are not sufficiently trained to teach PE. Therefore, school-based health interventions, including a toolkit, should be accompanied by workshops to equip educators with the necessary tools to confidently facilitate PE lessons and integrate a range of PE activities into their classrooms.     Agent-based model development of a complex socio-ecological system: Methods for overcoming data and domain limitations

    Agent-based models (ABMs) are appropriate tools for modelling socio-ecological systems due to their ability to handle complexity. However, development of such models is often an intensive process. There are many tutorials on the general methods and steps in ABM development but there are not necessarily practical details on how to overcome certain challenges. Honeybush (Cyclopia spp.), a kind of fynbos vegetation found in the Western and Eastern Cape mountains, is an important ecological and agricultural product in South Africa. It is considered a complex system due to its variability and unpredictability. The honeybush tea industry faces the challenge of meeting emerging market demands while maintaining sustainable harvesting practices, in the midst of an uncertain future due to climate change. We created a prototype model, HoneybushModel, using the MARS framework, a C# multi-agent simulation toolkit. The model was validated using historic data. Whilst outlining the development processes used to create the Honeybush Model, this paper provides a methodology for the development of such models and demonstrates techniques for addressing data, domain and framework limitations. The implemented model also acts as a case study for similar systems that could be modelled using an ABM

    Jason GH Londt contributed almost a quarter of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum’s specimens of Cicadidae, including a strong sample of females, and probably the best set to date of African records of predation on cicadas by robber flies. The collection provides evidence that robber flies catch more male cicadas; speculatively, because attacks on the heavier-bodied female fail more often. The metadata derived from these specimens also provide a small gazetteer of Londt’s collecting sites

    The impact of collaborative writing and scaffolding practices on student writing performance in second language contexts: action research at Midlands State University (MSU)

    The mixed methods action research study explored how collaborative writing and scaffolding practices impacted on the writing performance of students writing in groups. It sought to establish whether using the collaborative writing (CW) method would enhance the writing performance of 55 social work Midlands State University first-year students. Socio-cultural theory (SCT) was employed as the theoretical basis for the study as it emphasises learning in socially constructed environments in which interaction among peers and teachers leads to learning and construction of knowledge. Through the examination of student interactions in two collaborative writing activities, an analysis of student perceptions of CW, and an assessment of student collaboratively produced texts, the study found that the different peer and teacher scaffolding practices that were employed in the collaborative writing sessions significantly enhanced the students’ writing performance. Regardless of the challenges identified in CW, for example, misunderstandings and meaningless contributions from some group members, the research findings revealed that the student interactions offered scaffolding to support their writing activities. For example, validation feedback, link to previous knowledge and the use of correctional feedback were the scaffolding practices used. In addition, the students were able to collaboratively produce better texts with improved cohesive linking, mechanics, organisation, development, structure and vocabulary. The study contributed to L2 collaborative writing literature as it identifies the different student scaffolding approaches and offers an insight into the collaborative writing process and how it could support ESL writing development. However, the methodology posed some limitations, for example, the use of a questionnaire instead of interviews and recording student interactions in a journal instead of audio recording and, lastly, the researcher struggled to balance research demands and her normal teaching load.     The effectiveness of action learning in developing first-line leadership competence at basf South Africa

    As the researcher believes leaders and leadership to be products of both nature and nurture, this phenomenological study was focused on the use and effectiveness of action learning methodology to develop first-line leadership competence. This study aimed to understand the training and developmental experiences of first-line managers during a leadership development programme using an action learning approach. The main research question: “How effective is action learning in developing first-line leadership competence at BASF South Africa”, was supported by five secondary research questions focused on the KASH-in-Transit Leadership Programme and the extent that participants, mentors and departmental managers perceived that action learning developed the leadership competencies of participants, and specifically leadership competence aligned to the BASF Global Competency Model. It also focused on the factors, elements or conditions in the KASH-in-Transit Leadership Programme that were effective and/or ineffective in developing these leadership competencies. Using these research questions as a guide, the current study posed open-ended interview questions that explored participants’ experiences in developing competencies aligned to the BASF global competency framework. The theoretical framework for the study was guided by the constructs of adult learning, action learning and leadership development as well as the link between learning, action learning and leadership development. Data was collected from 15 participants (12 coater drivers, 2 mentors and 1 manager) through the use of observations, action learning sessions and semi-structured interviews, with the interviews transcribed and then analysed using Atlas.ti qualitative analysis software. The information collected and succeeding analysis may help the development of future leaders within BASF South Africa as well as help close the gap in the literature on action learning as a leadership development tool. Action learning as a modern-day approach is capable of developing leadership at multiple levels and contexts, building collaborative partnerships and networks that aid in organisational development. The research findings led to the development of five themes surrounding the phenomenon of action learning as a means to develop first-line leadership competence: (1) Learning transfer has internal and external levers, (2) viii 70 + 20 + 10 = leader and leadership competence, (3) Facilitator and Mentor are catalysts for action AND learning, (4) Leadership development is built with connections and stumbling blocks, and (5) Development is part of succession. Individuals were challenged through exposure to real-world practices while being supported by a facilitation and mentoring system that offered critical, constructive feedback.     Achieving consumers’ water demand through sustainable development

    This study is concentrated around achieving consumer water demand through sustainable development of water infrastructure within the King Cetshwayo District, which is still very limited. The goal of this study was to look into the technical issues that arise from inferior project delivery, poor infrastructural maintenance, and the elements that contribute to suboptimal service delivery of water infrastructure projects. This research was conducted using qualitative research, which offers insight from a participant’s point of view. It focuses on human experiences and communal circumstances. It is therefore, sound judgement to use a qualitative research method to collect data using a semi-structured interview guide. The researcher utilised deliberate sampling using purposive sampling. The recruitment process targeted the corporate and the senior management levels. This study's objective was to investigate the elements involved in developing sustainable water infrastructure to fulfil consumers water demand and to identify strategies for using sustainable development techniques to address the water scarcity.     Traditional birth attendants’ perceptions of their role in caring for women during childbirth in the Nyandeni sub-district

    The role of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) has been within remote communities for a long time. TBAs remain a major health resource in rural communities in developing countries as well as in some parts of urban areas. South Africa is a long way from effectively utilising TBAs as a community resource to enhance access to maternity services. This qualitative study, with an explorative, contextual, and descriptive design, included ten (n=12) TBAs aged between 38 and 56 years who met the inclusion criteria and were interviewed for the study. The objective of the study was to explore and describe TBAs’ perceptions of their role in caring for women during childbirth in the Nyandeni Sub-district. Data for this study was collected using face-to- face and individual semi-structured interviews, and field notes. Recorded data was transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Three main themes emerged, namely: TBAs perceive their role in caring for women as an essential service to women in the community; they believe that they possess the knowledge to conduct deliveries safely; and acknowledge that collaboration with the Department of Health could strengthen rural midwifery services.Thesis (Ma) -- Faculty of Health Science, 202

    Impact of sustainable tax revenue and expenditure on the achievement of sustainable development goals in some selected African countries

    Abstract The study examined the impact of Sustainable Tax Revenue and Expenditure on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in African countries using secondary data. The dataset was extracted from the World Development Indicators database. The large gap between developed and developing countries when comparing the probability of them achieving the SDGs was the main motivation behind this study. Data retrieved from 45 countries comprised of both African and developed countries for the period 2010–2020 was analyzed using the Generalized Method of Moments technique. The results revealed that the coefficients of grants received, various forms of taxes, and other revenue have a positive effect on economic growth but a negative effect on poverty and unemployment for African and developed countries. This finding suggests that improvements in tax revenue generation, grants and other revenue accumulation across different sources boost economic performance and the welfare of individuals in the analyzed countries. The outcome is an indication that accumulating more grants from different sources will help to achieve sustainable development, improve financial stability, contributes to the economic growth and development in these countries. This study can guide policymakers, governments, international institutions, revenue bodies such as SARS and other stakeholders in their various planning and other decision-making endeavors. Governments and other policymakers must ensure the efficient generation and sustainable utilization of revenue generated from taxes and other revenues to spur the growth and development of their countries. They should have Growth-Sustainability-Oriented Fiscal Adjustment Programs and Sustainable Government Expenditure that can help push and redirect governments to achieve the SDGs in Africa

    A molecular investigation of stem-galling Tetramesa Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) on African grasses: applications to biological control

    South Africa is a larger donor than receiver of alien grasses, where approximately 15% (_ 165 spp.) of the country's native grass species have become naturalised elsewhere. Many of these grasses have become serious invaders, causing significant damage to native species, habitat structure, and ecosystem functioning. Biological control is a sustainable and cost-effective method for the control of invasive weeds, but its application to invasive grasses has been approached with trepidation in the past due to the fears of a lack of host-specific herbivores that may cause non-target damage to agriculturally-important crops. The Tetramesa Walker genus (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) is one of three genera in the family that feed exclusively on grasses, and have a record of being host-specific to a particular species, or complex of closely-related congeners. There are over 200 described Tetramesa species, but this taxonomic effort has occurred almost exclusively in the Northern Hemisphere. Only about 2% of the described species are from Africa, with none from southern Africa despite the high diversity of grasses in the region. The low morphological variability between many Tetramesa groups has made identification difficult, where there may in fact be multiple undiscovered cryptic species. This thesis generated genetic sequence data (mitochondrial COI and nuclear 28S) that revealed at least eight native southern African Tetramesa taxa that are new to science, focusing particularly on the assemblages associated with Eragrostis curvula Nees (African lovegrass) and Sporobolus pyramidalis Beauv. and S. natalensis Steud. (giant rat's tail grass) which are alien invasive pests in Australia. Approximately 200 eurytomid wasps were collected and sequenced from 19 grass species across six South African provinces. Additionally, 27 grass species were sequenced using four gene regions (rps16-trnK, rps16, rpl32-trnL, and ITS), which were added to existing sequence data to build a dataset comprising over 700 sequences. Field host ranges and the use of host grass genetic proxies were important in making inferences about the host-specificity of eurytomid wasps of interest. Nine Tetramesa groups appeared to be host-specific to a single grass species, while six Tetramesa were associated with multiple species in a single grass genus. Since S. pyramidalis, S. natalensis, S. africanus, Hyparrhenia hirta, E. trichophora, and Andropogon gayanus are weeds elsewhere, there are at least six potential Tetramesa biological control agents that have been identified. A high diversity of Tetramesa on grasses within the Eragrostis genus was reported, with at least four taxa associated with E. curvula. It is currently uncertain whether these taxa represent different cryptic species or intraspecific populations that are the result of geographic sub-structuring. No-choice host-specificity testing using Tetramesa sp. 4 on E. curvula revealed that the wasp could complete its lifecycle on two non-target African grasses; namely E. plana and E. planiculmis. The wasp was also recorded on other Eragrostis species in the field (namely E. biflora and E. capensis). Using grass genetic sequences obtained in this study, it was found that there are four native Australian Eragrostis species that are more closely related to target E. curvula than to the non-target E. plana and E. planiculmis. This suggests that Tetramesa sp. 4 may not be suitably host-specific for use as a biological control agent. Further host-specificity testing on these native Australian species is required, however, before this insect is ruled out completely. The Tetramesa on S. pyramidalis (Tetramesa sp. 1), and the unidentified Sporobolus species presumed to be S. africanus, were suitably host-specific to be used as biological control agents. Since it was unclear whether some phylogenetic clades were true species or intraspecific populations, which is essential to understand when selecting agents for biological control, a new piece of software, SPEDE-sampler", was developed. It offers users of the Generalised Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC) species delimitation model a means of assessing the degree to which sampling effects such as data size and parameter choice can influence species diversity estimates. When applied to the Tetramesa data set, the software assisted in identifying which groups may contain cryptic species, uncovering that the COI marker is affected more by singletons than the 28S marker (i.e. species diversity tends to be overestimated), and confirming putative Tetramesa taxa that could be useful for biological control programmes going forward. This thesis has provided evidence that South Africa contains a diverse assemblage of Tetramesa and other eurytomids that are closely associated with their grass hosts, and that many of these taxa hold promise for grass biological control. This work has also highlighted the importance of integrative taxonomy in the discovery of novel taxa, and that biological control practitioners need to be aware of the caveats of each line of evidence used in the delimitation of putative species.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202
