Microbial and extracellular polymeric substance dynamics in arid–zone temporary pan ecosystems
Microbial communities of bacteria, viruses, algae, protozoans and fungi participate profoundly in aquatic systems, particularly in mediating processes such as primary production, decomposition, and biogeochemical cycles. In addition, microbiomes produce extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) which encompass a hydrated exopolymer mainly constituted of carbohydrates and proteins. The exopolymer aid proliferation and persistence of biofilms on their resident surfaces. There is however paucity of data on functional diversity of microbiomes in arid zone temporary wetlands with previous research having mainly focused on permanent systems in the northern hemisphere. In the face of ongoing climatic changes and anthropogenic threats to wetlands, it is imperative to assess the health status of aquatic systems in relation to microbial productivity dynamics. In this thesis, colorimetric methods and sequence–based metagenomics were conducted to quantify microbial EPS production and bacterial metagenome functions, respectively. This study was conducted in Khakhea–Bray region (North–West, South Africa) in June 2021 and January 2022 with a focus on evaluating microbial patterns of distribution between seasons (i.e., Dry and Wet) and varying depth i.e., deepest zones (Deep), intermediate depth (Mid) and shallowest regions (Edge). Additionally, potential relationships between EPS and either water content or organic matter content (OM content) were evaluated. In this study it was hypothesized that wet phases and deeper zones will have high EPS production and support more functions in comparison to shallowest regions and dry phases. Carbohydrates and proteins were quantified using the Dubois method and modified Lowry procedure, respectively. Carbohydrates generally occurred in higher proportions than proteins, suggesting that EPS found in these systems was largely diatom produced. The wet phases (wet season and inundation periods) supported more EPS production compared to the dry phases. The results of principal components analysis (PCA) and Spearman’s correlations suggested that EPS was highly correlated with sediment water content among other assessed variables. No significant associations were established between EPS and organic matter content. Spatial distribution of EPS demonstrated similar patterns between the deepest (Deep) and the intermediate depth zones (Mid) however the shallow regions (Edge) had significantly lower concentrations. Bacterial characterization was established by amplification of the 16S rRNA gene using illumina–sequencing protocol. Enzyme functions associated with biogeochemical pathways were predicted in PICRUSt2 bioinformatics pipeline. A total of 15 042 Unique Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) were observed to be affiliated to 51 bacterial phyla and 1 127 genera. All top genera had commonality in heat tolerance. Firmicutes, dominated at phyla level with 59 % (mean ± sd, 19 ± 13 %) relative abundance followed by Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria both at 34 % (18 ± 7 %) and (18 ± 6 %), respectively. Microbial diversity matrices highlighted significant differences in beta diversity more than alpha diversity. Bacterial microbiomes were more distinct between seasons compared to within season, suggesting that functions were seasonally driven. These findings were supported by highest rates of denitrification, carbohydrate degradation and EPS production by core microbiomes in the wet season as compared to low rates of nitrogen mineralisation, carbon fixation and nitrification in the dry season. The present findings represent a first attempt in evaluating sequence–based metagenomics in semi–arid southern African temporary pan ecosystem. Both microbial EPS and bacterial functional potential were highly driven by water availability, with highest rates mainly associated with maximum inundation compared to dry states of pans. It can therefore be suggested that extended dry periods are threatening to microbially mediated processes in temporary wetlands, with implications to loss of biodiversity due to desiccation resulting in poor nutrient cycling.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202
The role of mentoring in the advancement of female leadership in corporate organisations
Richard Branson reportedly said that “if you ask any successful business person, at some point along the road, they will always have had a great mentor”. The lack of representation of females at senior and executive levels is slowly transforming, yet not at the required rate. The study was conducted to evaluate the role of mentoring in the advancement of female leadership in corporate organisations. The research method that was followed was a qualitative and explanatory inductive approach to interview participants and observe their experiences and opinions with regard to the role of mentoring in the advancement of women through the following themes: job satisfaction, organisational culture, organisational development mentoring and the barriers and challenges that affect women. The focus area includes women in current senior level positions who have aspirations to advance into more senior or executive levels. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants and due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the globe, a small group of well-respected individuals was selected according to their credibility. The key observations reflected within the study that the themes which were dominant included the following: 1)inequality, 2) lack of support and the importance of a sponsor/coach and 3) barriersand challenges (the “glass ceiling” and “boys club”) that still exist. The findings of the study will equip the role players within corporate organisations and associated bodies to ensure mentoring is used and encouraged for adoption among all organisations, implement mentorship strategies and apply the ADAPT mentoring model. Furthermore, the findings will serve to bring relevant insights and recommendations to promote more women in senior, executive and board-level positions. The implications of the findings suggest that mentoring is an enabler of advancement leverage for female leadership into senior and executive levels. The limitations of the study were the effects of COVID-19 and the subsequent countrywide lockdown, where constraints of meeting in person, availability of time, network and data constraints availed themselves. The researcher was unbale to ascertain long-term effects of the role of mentoring in advancing female leadership, but rather encourages its main benefits and is positive of the influence it may hold to set a precedent. Factors influencing employee engagement in a flexible work environment: a study of the Road Accident Fund
Employee engagement is a critical aspect of organisational success, and with the increasing adoption of flexible working arrangements (FWAs), understanding its determinants becomes crucial. However, many organisations are struggling to keep employees engaged while offering them flexible working patterns. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors that influence employee engagement among employees of the Road Accident Fund (RAF) in South Africa after the introduction of flexible working arrangements. To achieve the main aim of this study, a literature study was undertaken on employee engagement and a flexible working environment. The main focus of the literature study was to determine the factors with the most potential to influence employee engagement in the context of a flexible working environment. These factors emerged as work-life balance, employee wellbeing, leadership, rewards and recognition, learning and development, employee involvement, effective communication and workplace flexibility. This led to conducting an empirical study utilising a self-administered online survey as the data collection instrument to determine the influence of these factors on the engagement of RAF employees. A scale was developed to determine these factors and the current engagement level of employees at the RAF was measured using the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) (2002). A descriptive and correlational research design was employed, utilising a convenience sampling method with a final sample of 413 achieved. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential techniques, including Cronbach’s Alpha, frequency distributions, measure of central tendencies and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), product moment correlation, t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-square tests. This included the testing for potential relationships between the variables of interest.The results of the empirical study revealed some of factors that were identified in the literature review of this study were found to have a positive influence on the engagement of employees working in the flexible working environment offered by the RAF. These factors are employee well-being, leadership, reward and recognition, learning and development, employee involvement, effective communication and workplace flexibility (time). The factors that were excluded by the results were work-life balance and workplace flexibility (place). These exceptions imply that these factors have less influence on the overall employee engagement levels at the RAF. Moreover, the levels of engagement of RAF employees were found to be at a moderate level. Furthermore, the results indicated that regardless of whether employees utilised FWAs or not, their levels of engagement remained at a moderate level. In other words, the utilisation of FWAs did not appear to significantly impact on the overall engagement levels of employees, and both groups exhibited similar moderate engagement levels. The findings also suggest that the RAF should maintain and enhance the factors that have a positive influence on employee engagement. In addition, the organisation should work on addressing those factors that do not play as significant a role in influencing engagement as the other factors. In silico characterization of missense mutations in infectious diseases: case studies of tuberculosis and COVID-19
One of the greatest challenges facing modern medicine and the global public health today is antimicrobial drug resistance (AMR). This “silent pandemic,” as coined by the world health organization (WHO), is steadily increasing with an estimated 4.95 million mortalities attributed to AMR in 2019, 1.27 million of which were directly linked to AMR. Some of the contributors to AMR include self-prescription, drug overuse, sub-optimal drug prescriptions by health workers, and inaccessibility to drugs, especially in remote areas, which leads to poor adherence. The situation is aggravated by the upsurge of new zoonotic infections like the coronavirus disease 2019, which present unique challenges and take the bulk of resources hence stunting the fight against AMR. Quite alarming still is our current antimicrobial arsenal, which hasn’t had any novel antimicrobial drug discovery/addition, of a new class, since the 1980s. This puts a burden on the existing broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs which are already struggling against multi-drug resistant strains like multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). Besides the search for new antimicrobial agents, the other avenue for addressing AMR is studying drug resistance mechanisms, especially single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), that change drug target characteristics. With the advancement of computational power and data storage resources, computational approaches can be applied in mutational studies to provide insight into the drug resistance mechanisms with an aim to inform future drug design and development. Therefore, in the first part of this thesis, we employ integrative in silico approaches, including 3D structure modeling, molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, comparative essential dynamics (ED), and protein network analysis approaches i.e., dynamic residue network (DRN) analysis to decipher drug resistance mechanisms in tuberculosis (TB). This involved an investigation of the drug resistance mutations in the catalase-peroxidase (KatG) and pyrazinamidase (MtPncA) enzymes which are responsible for activation of TB first-line drugs; Isoniazid (INH) and Pyrazinamide (PZA), respectively. In the case of KatG, eleven high confidence (HC) KatG mutations associated with a high prevalence of phenotypic INH resistance were identified and their 3D structures modeled before subjecting them to MD simulations. Global analysis showed an unstable KatG structure and active site environment in the mutants compared to the wildtype. Active site dynamics in the mutants compromised cofactor (heme) interactions resulting in less bonds/interactions compared to the wildtype. Given the importance of the heme, reduced interactions affect enzyme function. Trajectory analysis also showed asymmetric protomer behavior both in the wildtype and mutant systems. DRN analysis identified the KatG dimerization domain and C-terminal domain as functionally important and influential in the enzyme function as per betweenness centrality and eigenvector centrality distribution. In the case of the MtPncA enzyme, our main focus was on understanding the MtPncA binding ability of Nicotinamide (an analogue of PZA) in comparison to PZA, especially in the presence of 82 resistance conferring MtPncA mutations. Like in KatG, the mutant structures were modeled and subjected to MD simulations and analysis. Interestingly, more MtPncA mutants favored NAM interactions compared to PZA i.e., 34 MtPncA mutants steadily coordinated NAM compared to 21 in the case of PZA. Trajectory and ligand interaction analysis showed how increased active site lid loop dynamics affect the NAM binding, especially in the systems with the active site mutations i.e., H51Y, W68R, C72R, L82R, K96N, L159N, and L159R. This led to fewer protein-ligand interactions and eventually ligand ejection. Network analysis further identified the protein core, metal binding site (MBS), and substrate binding site as the most important regions of the enzyme. Furthermore, the degree of centrality analysis showed how specific MtPncA mutations i.e., C14H, F17D, and T412P, interrupt intra-protein communication from the MtPncA core to the MBS, affecting enzyme activity. The analysis of KatG and MtPncA enzyme mutations not only identified the effects of mutations on enzyme behaviour and communication, but also established a framework of computational approaches that can be used for mutational studies in any protein. Besides AMR, the continued encroachment of wildlife habitats due to population growth has exposed humans to wildlife pathogens leading to zoonotic diseases, a recent example being coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In the second part of the thesis, the established computational approaches in Part 1, were employed to investigate the changes in inter-protein interactions and communication patterns between the severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with the human host receptor protein (ACE2: angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) consequent to mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD). Here, the focus was on RBD mutations of the Omicron sub-lineages. We identified four Omicron-sub lineages with RBD mutations i.e., BA.1, BA.2, BA.3 and BA.4. Each sub-lineage mutations were modeled into RBD structure in complex with the hACE2. MD analysis of the RBD-hACE2 complex highlighted how the RBD mutations change the conformational flexibility of both the RBD and hACE2 compared to the wildtype (WT). Furthermore, DRN analysis identified novel allosteric paths composed of residues with high betweenness and eigenvector centralities linking the RBD to the hACE2 in both the wildtype and mutant systems. Interestingly, these paths were modified with the progression of Omicron sub-lineages, highlighting how the virus evolution affects protein interaction. Lastly, the effect of mutations on S RBD and hACE2 interaction was investigated from the hACE2 perspective by focusing on mutations in the hACE2 protein. Here, naturally occurring hACE2 polymorphisms in African populations i.e., S19P, K26R, M82I, K341R, N546D, and D597Q, were identified and their effects on RBD-hACE2 interactions investigated in presence of the Omicron BA.4/5 RBD mutations. The hACE2 polymorphisms subtly affected the complex dynamics; however, RBD-hACE2 interaction analysis showed that hACE2 mutations effect the complex formation and interaction. Here, the K26R mutation favored RBD-hACE2 interactions, whereas S19P resulted in fewer inter-protein interactions than the reference system. The M82I mutation resulted in a higher RBD-hACE2 binding energy compared to the wildtype meaning that the mutation might not favor RBD binding to the hACE2. On the other hand, K341R had the most RBD-hACE2 interactions suggesting that it probably favors RBD binding to the hACE2. N546D and D597Q had diminutive differences to the reference system. Interestingly, the network of high betweenness centrality residues linking the two proteins, as seen in the previous paragraph, were maintained/modified in presence of hACE2 mutations. HACE2 mutations also changed the enzyme network patterns resulting in a concentration of high eigenvector centrality residues around the zinc-binding and active site region, ultimately influencing the enzyme functionality. Altogether, the thesis highlights fundamental structural and network changes consequent to mutations both in TB and COVID-19 proteins of interest using in silico approaches. The impact of sustainable maintenance systems on government hospitals : a case of Cecilia Makewane and Frere hospitals
This research sought to evaluate the current state of infrastructure maintenance put in place at government hospitals with a focus on Cecilia Makewane and Frere government Hospitals. These two hospitals served as examples of new infrastructure (Cecilia Makewane) and existing, older dilapidated hospital infrastructure (Frere) undergoing constant maintenance. The literature considered showed that in order for maintenance to be regarded as sustainable, it had to preserve the social, economic, and environmental conditions of a hospital building structure. The study aimed to provide insight into the existing state of maintenance and its sustainability. The sustainability of hospital infrastructure maintenance was tested by assessing the state of maintenance funding, maintenance workmanship, personnel skillsets, and maintenance policies. This study involved the collection of descriptive and numerical data through questionnaires. All of the information obtained through administering the questionnaires was converted into numerical data and used to gauge results. The results showed that there were shortfalls hindering sustainable maintenance, namely that the National Department of Health has failed to prioritise hospital maintenance funding and has failed to consistently monitor and evaluate hospital maintenance funding resulting in misuse and late compensation of maintenance contractors. The results also showed that the following existing successes would promote sustainable government hospital maintenance: satisfactory records of health infrastructure building deterioration are in place and maintenance projects involving refurbishments achieved practical completion and passed the latent defects liability periods. The study established that the available skilled staff are inadequate, hospital maintenance workmanship is poor, hospital maintenance projects were not adequately funded and existing maintenance processes were not regularly evaluated. The study recommends employment of more skilled maintenance staff, continuous monitoring, evaluation and prioritisation of maintenance funding, establishing clear maintenance roles between in-house staff and outsourced maintenance personnel.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology, 202
Health and safety coordination between main contractors and subcontractors at the Medupi power station project
Health and safety (H&S) coordination between main contractors and subcontractors on construction projects is one of the most important factors for the success of a project. The aim of this study was to develop a framework to improve H&S coordination between main contractors and subcontractors on the Medupi power station project, and the objectives were to ascertain the H&S measures used to assess the H&S risks towards the reduction of hazards and injuries; assess the enforcement mechanisms of H&S regulations, and examine the challenges encountered in terms of the coordination of H&S at the Medupi power station project. Moreover, this research addressed the significant issue of possible ineffective coordination of H&S guidelines and policies in the South African construction industry, as well as at the Medupi power station project. This research will help to alleviate incidents and accidents at the Medupi power station project. The research entailed a review of the literature pertaining to H&S, and a questionnaire survey that was used to gain insight into the working conditions on site and to evaluate the state of H&S coordination, its implications, and compliance with the Construction Regulations by all parties concerned. A purposive sampling method was adopted to survey contractors working on the Medupi power station project. The research findings revealed that inadequate H&S communication between main contractors and subcontractors negatively affected project performance as it resulted in the occurrence of accidents on site. The research findings also revealed that most respondents, both main contractors and subcontractors, were aware, and clearly understood the required H&S practices. However, a small number indicated that they were uncertain with respect to such practices. This indicated that there was a gap in terms of H&S coordination between the main contractors and subcontractors on the Medupi power station project. The research findings further revealed that lack of commitment to H&S practices, inadequate communication / consultation relative to the implementation of the H&S management system (H&SMS), inadequate resources as well as inadequate contractor relations between the main contractors and subcontractors constituted barriers in terms of the H&SMS. 5 Recommendations included a need for the following relative to H&S: management leadership, worker participation, hazard identification and control, education and training, programme evaluation and improvement, and optimum communication and coordination for employers on multi-employer work sites.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology, 202
The perspectives of some amaXhosa healthcare workers regarding mental distress: an interpretive phenomenological analysis
Mental distress is a universal phenomenon experienced by many individuals despite age, race, gender, occupation, or socio-cultural context and is slowly becoming a major contributor to the burden of disease in South Africa. However, mental distress fails to take precedence in SA because of inherent intricacies in understandings about it, as a result of ways of being conceptualised and interpreted differently across cultures. This research study explored amaXhosa healthcare workers’ understandings, knowledge, practices, and attitudes regarding mental distress amongst some amaXhosa people. The study aimed to investigate what mental distress means for some people who belong to the amaXhosa ethnic group, to uncover how they conceptualise mental distress, seek help or what behaviours prevent help-seeking. It aimed to highlight any prevalent attitudes of stigma and discrimination, to build insight into overlooked aspects in psychotherapy practice especially when dealing with non-western populations. The study utilised interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as its analytical lens; to explore and to enter as far as possible into the worlds of participants to generate rich data and in-depth analysis. Four participants were recruited through both purposive and snowball sampling and data were gathered using individual semi-structured interviews. From the data collected, the findings illustrate a limited understanding of mental distress amongst some amaXhosa people due to lack of education and awareness on the subject, leading to the apparent silence in discussing such matters and inadvertently predisposing it to being viewed as taboo. The predominant themes as evidenced by the data were the use of language that sensationalises mental distress; misinformation; Afrocentric beliefs that rationalise mental distress; alienation and segregation of those affected; and the primary healthcare system as a source of reinforcing prevalent stigma and discrimination. The findings show a link between constructs around mental distress and the prevalent socioiii cultural environment, denoting that some perspectives can be linked to observations or modelling in childhood, from people in the respective communities in which people live.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Psychology, 202
A digital storybook project with mothers of grade four learners in support of literacy learning : A participatory action learning and action research study
According to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS, 2016), 78% of grade four children in South Africa's poorest communities lack access to adequate educational resources and infrastructure, which prevents them from reading for meaning in any language. Children in South Africa lack the foundational reading abilities required to finish grade four in compliance with international standards. This project used the participatory action learning and action research (PALAR) approach to prepare mothers to create a digital storybook as learner support material and because participatory action research is a method of evaluation that generates data about an ongoing change process and encourages learning amongst the people most intimately connected to the change. The study centred on the use of digital storytelling as a literacy resource to create learning experiences in the literacy classroom, as well as to determine how PALAR can be used as a methodology to aid mothers in creating a digital storybook. The research objectives guided the workshops held over five weeks with twelve grade four learners’ mothers. I held a two to three-hour, one-day start-up workshop that was recorded and documented. The key advisory set (KAS) members received baseline checklists, which were then sent to the action learning set (ALS) members in their respective groups. The information received from the checklist was used as discussion points in the follow-up workshops. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) served as the foundation for the data analysis. The generated data was interpreted and analysed using Schneider’s (2013) ten work steps. The data-gathering method was based on a qualitative approach and the study was underpinned by critical theory and critical pedagogy that enabled a collective approach which results in greater epistemic justice. The principal, parents, and learning support specialists (LSSs) had informal pre-entry talks before the start of the official data collection. A total of twelve participants were chosen for this study based on their willingness to participate and their being parents or guardians of children in grade four. The research objectives informed three iterative cycles of planning, observing, and reflecting. The usage of both open and closed coding led to the emergence of three main themes, which were understanding literacy, communication between school and parents, and learning materials. iii New categories were created because of the continuous comparison and analysis that were employed between cycles to answer the sub- and main research questions. Data generated throughout the three cycles revealed the mothers' concerns, misconceptions and level of knowledge and commitment to the creation of literacy resources and the possibility of creating a digital storybook. Despite the workshops generating advancement and excitement, the findings indicate that the participants' assessments of their role in the creation of learning materials varied. The report indicates that the parents felt powerless to influence educational decisions based on their past and present experiences regarding their involvement and interaction with the school. It is necessary to employ strategies to put parents at ease and to reassure them that their opinions are important and required to ensure their children’s educational achievement. Essentially, this means ascertaining how to guarantee closer relationships between parents, teachers and learners. Recommendations are made regarding parental involvement in curriculum development based on the study's findings. The recommendations include effective parent-teacher communication through parental involvement in curriculum development, increased parent-teacher interaction to meet learners’ needs more effectively, and finally, an expansion of the study considering a larger sample size, a new study site, and an expansion of the goals beyond the digital storybook.Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, 202
The Case for a Cray on a Chip
Moore’s Law is usually interpreted as a prediction of how many transistors you can buy for the same money at some future date. It can also be interpreted as how long you need to wait until a given number of transistors falls below a target price. An example of this reverse-application of Moore’s Law is transitions such as the emergence of microprocessors competitive with traditional larger-scale computers and the emergence of smartphones. Since the late 1990s, it has become increasingly common for growth in transistors to equate to more CPUs (cores) per die. Recent designs have over 50 billion transistors and far more potential parallelism than can be supported by memory. I argue the case for a rebalancing of design goals with a much larger, faster on-chip memory and a CPU that is designed around this memory system. The proposal: a Cray-class vector CPU on a die with 1 Gibyte of static RAM, or Crayon (for Cray on a chip). The kind of organization classically used by Cray vector supercomputers is feasible to achieve on a single chip. I argue that a design like this can use the available memory bandwidth, as opposed to over-CPU designs with a large number of cores and GPU threads that are memory limited and propose how such a design could be used
Morphometric variation, heavy metal analysis and temperature effects on body weight and stoichiometric ratios (C:N:P) of cerithidea decollata along the Wild Coast, South Africa
The truncated snail, C e rit hid e a d e c olla t a , is one of the major invertebrates in mangrove ecosystems. It’s the rapid ecophysiological response to environmental stress conditions makes C. decollata an ideal species to test the effects of climate change in mangrove ecosystems. Increased temperatures, due to climate change, is one of the major threats faced by aquatic invertebrates as thermal stress may easily lead to death. This study, thus, compared the effects of 1) environmental conditions on the morphology; 2) temperature on body weight and stoichiometry as well as 3) the heavy metal content of C. decollata across three mangrove ecosystems. Morphometry results revealed that sites significantly influenced most of the shell morphological variables (i.e., shell length, shell width, spire height and aperture width). However, sites did not significantly influence the shell depth and aperture length of C. decollata . Temperature effects on body weight revealed that C. decollata individuals gained weight at low temperatures (10 to 20 °C) in all sites. As a result, the mean % weight gain of 6.75 ± 0.11 in Mngazana, 15.82 ± 0.13 in Mbhashe and 11.2 ± 0.13 in Nqabara. Contrary, C. decollata lost weight at temperatures between 25 and 40 °C across all sites leading to a mean % weight loss of 9.51 ± 0.05 in Mngazana; 14.52 ± 0.16 in Mbhashe and 25.74 ± 0.12 in Nqabara. Stoichiometric analysis revealed that soft tissues had higher nitrogen, carbon and phosphorous than the shells. The NP ratio was higher in soft tissues than in shells while CN and CP ratios were higher in shells than in soft tissues. The N, C, P, CN, CP and NP were lowest in Mngazana and highest in Nqabara. Temperature increases resulted in increased nitrogen, phosphorous, carbon and their stoichiometric CN, CP and NP ratios. Heavy metal results showed that Zn, Cu and Cd were highest in the soft tissue than in the shells and sediment. Contrarily, Fe and Pb were higher in the sediment than in shells and soft tissues. The Cu+Zn was highest in the shells than in the soft tissues and sediment. However, arsenic concentrations were below detection levels across all sites. Overall, no significant site differences were detected for heavy metals. It was, therefore, concluded that sites influenced some of C. decollata morphological features while temperature affected the body weight and stoichiometry of C. decollata .Thesis (Masters) -- Faculty of Natural Sciences, 202
