    The impact of knowledge economy on economic complexity in Africa

    The paper’s primary goal is to investigate the impact of the Knowledge Economy on the Economic Complexity in Africa. The paper presents the concept of the knowledge economy, an economy where knowledge is the main engine of economic growth and a measure of the knowledge in a country as expressed in the diversification of its products (Economic Complexity). It highlights the knowledge economy framework by the World Bank, which asserts that sustained investments in education, innovation, information and communication technologies, and a conducive economic and institutional environment will lead to increases in the use and creation of knowledge in economic production. Summary findings on machine learning estimates proved method LASSO has the minimum SE, which shows that the method LASSO forecasts the model with much precision than the other methods.     The provision of services to people in South Africa is a constitutional right that all spheres of the South African government are bound to. South Africa’s Bill of Rights also lays it out that all SA citizens are entitled to these services. The functions of the national, provincial, and local spheres of government are to ensure that all that the Constitution and Bill of Rights promise, are provided and implemented. Service delivery is therefore a mandated activity that all municipalities are obligated to provide to their residents locally. The primary objective of this study is to assess the quality of the service delivery effort from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM). The study was conducted by using a qualitative case study approach. A total of 12 participants were chosen for the study and in-depth interviews were implemented as data collection tool to accomplish the study’s objectives. The qualitative data analysis tool Atlas.ti was employed to present emerging themes from the collected data. The findings of the study highlighted the challenges experienced in the NMBM prevent a high level of service delivery to residents. The study participants agreed that the service delivery effort in the NMBM is below that what the various stakeholders, mainly the residents, expected. The effective management of the limited financial and human resources are the major themes that emerged during the interviews. The study recommends that the service delivery value chain be reviewed, and that policies and strategies be genuinely implemented.     Assessing the effects of materials management practices on performance of locomotive manufacturing firms in Gauteng province

    The study assessed the effects of materials management practices (materials planning, procurement, availability, handling, and delivery) on the performance of rail rolling stock and locomotive manufacturing firms in Gauteng Province. The study also investigated the causes of delays in supply of materials in the rail rolling stock and locomotive manufacturing industry in Gauteng. The research design employed was both descriptive and explanatory, using a quantitative research approach in which online surveys were conducted on a sample of 200 respondents from the rolling stock manufacturing firms in Gauteng. Descriptive statistics performed through SPSS 27 and SEM performed through AMOS 26 were used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that materials management practises were implemented in the rail rolling stock and locomotive manufacturing industry. According to the results, materials availability and materials handling have positive and statistically significant effects on the performance of rail manufacturing firms in Gauteng Province. However, materials planning, procurement and delivery practices have no significant effect on the performance of rail manufacturing firms in Gauteng Province. Therefore, the results reveal that firm performance is driven by materials availability and materials handling. In addition, late delivery of materials to the production line was found to be the main cause of project delays. The study thus offered a contrasting perspective to the general findings that show materials management practices to be a significant contributor to manufacturing firm performance.     Modelling the factors that motivate home users to protect their home networking devices

    Most home users do not have access to the typical managed security measures employed in organizations, which leaves them alone in managing the security of their computing devices and home networks. This research focuses on the securing of home networking devices, which with faster, always-on networking technologies, are increasingly vulnerable to attack. To develop interventions that aim to assist home users with securing their home networking devices, it is imperative to understand why they protect or do not protect their home networking devices. Therefore, this research study models the factors that motivate home users to protect their home networking devices. The study limits data collection to South African fibre users, a fast-growing segment of the South African population. Following a comprehensive literature review, the study adopted the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) as the primary framework for the conceptual research model. Factors from the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) were included to enrich the theoretical model. A measurement instrument consisting of 53 questionnaire items measuring thirteen (13) constructs was developed. After that, a structural model that hypothesized fifteen (15) relationships between constructs was created. The conceptual research model was evaluated through structural equation modeling (SEM) using empirical data gathered from a sample of 392 South African home fibre users. Interestingly, trust in the service provider did not significantly impact perceived vulnerability or severity. This implies that initiatives from the service provider will not necessarily have the desired impact on home user behavior. Additionally, trust in technology did not impact perceived severity and only partially impacted perceived vulnerability. This suggests that home users did not think that the security features of their home networking devices helped much. Of course, these results are in the context of this study and may not necessarily be generalizable to other populations or contexts. Further work to understand the role of service and technology providers may be helpful. The negative relationship between technology anxiety and both perceived task anxiety and self-efficacy supports the call for more or better security awareness interventions. The positive relationship between social influence and perceived vulnerability and severity suggests that these awareness interventions may be best delivered through community involvement.     Microbial Community Responses to Alterations in Historical Fire Regimes in Montane Grasslands

    The influence of fire regimes on soil microbial diversity in montane grasslands is a relatively unexplored area of interest. Understanding the belowground diversity is a crucial stepping-stone toward unravelling community dynamics, nutrient sequestration, and overall ecosystem stability. In this study, metabarcoding was used to unravel the impact of fire disturbance regimes on bacterial and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community structures in South African montane grasslands that have been subjected to an intermediate (up to five years) term experimental fire-return interval gradient. Bacterial communities in this study exhibited a shift in composition in soils subjected to annual and biennial fires compared to the controls, with carbon and nitrogen identified as significant potential chemical drivers of bacterial communities. Shifts in relative abundances of dominant fungal operational taxonomic units were noted, with Glomeromycota as the dominant arbuscular mycorrhiza observed across the fire-return gradient. A reduction in mycorrhizal root colonisation was also observed in frequently burnt autumnal grassland plots in this study. Furthermore, evidence of significant mutualistic interactions between bacteria and fungi that may act as drivers of the observed community structure were detected. Through this pilot study, we can show that fire regime strongly impacts bacterial and fungal communities in southern African montane grasslands, and that changes to their usually resilient structure are mediated by seasonal burn patterns, chemical drivers, and mutualistic interactions between these two groups

    HI View of the Norma Galaxy Cluster with MeerKAT

    Studies reveal that galaxies assemble into clusters as gas-rich, active star-forming disks and eventually settle in the virialized core as quenched early-type galaxies with depleted gas. To examine environmental effects responsible for the quenched population in the cluster core, we exploit the higher sensitivity of the MeerKAT telescope to probe Hi properties of galaxies in the Norma cluster. The Norma cluster is an ideal laboratory for this study since it is a rich and massive cluster of nearby galaxies. The Hi data cube used covers a velocity range of 483 − 11, 113 km/s, with a noise rms sensitivity of 0.09 mJy/beam and an angular resolution of ∼ 14.65′′ × 9.28′′. A total of 25 reliable Hi sources were detected over the entire velocity range. The Hi detections reveal two major galaxy overdensities located at vrad ∼ 2096 − 7646 km/s and vrad ∼ 10, 000 km/s. The first is associated with the Norma cluster gravitational potential and indicates a substructure in its velocity distribution; the other is a population of background galaxies. In this work, the Norma cluster has 13 cluster members detected in Hi and 130 galaxies from optical surveys. The spatial distribution of cluster members covers a field that is 2/3 × RA, where RA = 2.02 Mpc at cz = 4871 km/s. From the spatial distribution, optical galaxies are densely populated in the central regions, while most galaxies in Hi were detected on the outskirts. From the phase-space diagram, 6 galaxies detected in Hi are found in the virialised region, while the rest of the detections are infalling for the first time. Hi detections that are not yet virialised have asymmetrical morphologies, while virialised detections have truncated gas disks. Most cluster members that were found to have asymmetrical gas disks are also Hi deficient by 0.8 − 1.2 dex but show excess SFR efficiency for the amount of Hi detected. The results demonstrate that the initial phase of galaxy-ICM interactions might be responsible for morphological transformation and enhancement of star formation activity.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Physics and Electronics, 202

    Herein, we report a quantum chemistry investigation of the interaction between µ-truxinic acid, referred to as TXA0 , and Y+ (Y=Li, Na, K) and Z− (Z=F, Cl, Br) ions using M06-2X, B3LYP and 휔 B97XD functionals in conjunction with the 6–31+ +G(d,p), aug-cc-pVDZ(-X2C) and 6–311+ +G (d, p) basis sets. Our computations suggest that Y+ cations can bind to TXA0 through several combinations of cation…O and cation-π interactions, while Z− anions generally establish anion… H–O contacts. Predicted binding energies at the M06-2X/6–311+ +G(d,p) level range between−26.6 and−70.2 kcal/mol for cationic complexes and−20.4 and−62.3 kcal/mol for anionic ones. As such, TXA0 appears as an amphoteric molecule with a slight preference for electrophilic (cation... O) attacks. Furthermore, the most favourable binding site for cations allows for the formation of O…cation…O interactions where the cation is trapped between O37 and O38 atoms of TXA0 . Anions do not behave uniformly towards TXA0 : while the fuoride anion F− induces the deprotonation of TXA0 , Br− and Cl− do not. All of these structural insights are supported by topological calculations in the context of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). Finally, SAPT0 analyses suggest that TXA0 …Y+ and TXA0 …Z− complexes are mainly stabilized by electrostatic and inductive efects, whose combined contributions account for more than 60 percent of the total interaction energy

    Distribution and impact of the Asian seed beetle, Megabruchidius tonkineus (Pic, 1904)(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) on Gleditsia triacanthos L. seeds in South Africa

    Honey locust, Gleditsia triacanthos (Fabaceae) is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to North America. The tree has been introduced worldwide and has become invasive in South Africa. In 2017, it was listed as one of the nine fastest-spreading weeds in South Africa. Once established, it competes with and displaces indigenous species and dense stands can significantly reduce stream flow. The Asian seed-feeding bruchid, Megabruchidius tonkineus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) was introduced into South Africa and has subsequently taken honey locust as a host plant. The beetle damages honey locust seeds and is therefore considered a biological control agent, despite no host-specificity or impact studies having been conducted. This study shows that M. tonkineus has established across the entire G. triacanthos population range in South Africa, damaging approximately 9% of seeds. Laboratory studies show that M. tonkineus completes its larval development in the seeds of G. triacanthos in about 66.80±0.69 SE days before emerging. This study is the first to describe the distribution and impact of this alien insect in South Africa

    Maintaining the façade: the disconnect between policy and practice in heritage resources management in Makhanda, South Africa

    Cultural heritage is globally acknowledged as having the potential to contribute to positive economic, environmental, political, and social impacts (Graham, 2002). In the South African context, cultural heritage management is rooted in colonial and apartheid narratives that mark a large part of the country's history. Post-apartheid transformation processes have driven new approaches to managing heritage to represent the shared collective narrative of a democratic South Africa. This transformation includes the formation of the three-tiered South African heritage management system by the National Heritage Resources Agency (NHRA) in 1999 and a rethinking of what heritage constitutes and whose heritage matters. Despite the extensive cultural heritage resources in the country, literature concerning the management of these assets in the context of the urban environment and urban planning and management is limited (Donaldson, 2001; Donaldson et al., 2013; Buchanan & Donaldson, 2021; Kruger & Donaldson, 2021). This research explores the built environment heritage resources in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape province. Makhanda possesses a rich and varied cultural heritage landscape, including over 70 Provincial Heritage Resources in the form of built environment heritage. The case study provides a perfect laboratory for investigating the various threats and opportunities in the local context that severely affect heritage management. The research used a mixed-method approach to generate data. Primary data were collected through a field survey of built environment heritage resources, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Secondary data sources comprised government policy documents, by-laws, reports, research papers and newspaper articles. In the localised context, findings illustrated several challenges affecting local heritage management, centring mainly on the balance between heritage resource management and overall urban management. Findings identified challenges included a poor acknowledgement of the nuances in local history, questions on the effectiveness of legislation, governance and management issues, conflicting demands for social services and urban development, and building maintenance. Heritage resources are acknowledged as a potential tool to meet the local community's needs, and opportunities for developing the heritage sector were also identified. These suggestions include information sharing and cooperation between the municipality, community and various role players, community education, tourism product development, institutional development through skills development, the incorporation of intangible heritage, and the acknowledgement of more inclusive forms of cultural heritage. Overall, the findings indicate that the disconnection in heritage management, urban management practices, and municipal dysfunction in Makhanda threatens the built environment heritage and the local sense of place. The study argues that for local heritage management to succeed, there needs to be a balanced approach to heritage management and urban management through improvements in stakeholder relationships, governance, institutional capacity, knowledge sharing and community involvement in decision-making processes.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geography, 202
