    Distribution and habitat preferences of marine megafauna in Nosy Be, Madagascar

    Marine megafauna have important ecological roles including the top-down regulation of lower trophic levels and the transport of nutrients. They are also charismatic species of socioeconomic importance, due to their public appeal and focus for ecotourism. However, these taxa face numerous anthropogenic threats including bycatch, habitat-loss, noise disturbance, prey reductions, pollution, and vessel traffic. Northwest Madagascar has been identified as an important marine mammal area and whale shark aggregation site, yet limited information on megafauna within Madagascar exists. In this thesis, I investigated the community structure, distribution trends, related environmental factors (Chapter 2) and predicted habitat suitability (Chapter 3) using a species distribution modelling approach for marine megafauna around Nosy Be, North-west Madagascar. Data collection consisted of opportunistic boatbased surveys conducted while looking for whale sharks, mobulid rays and cetaceans. These activities were performed by dedicated ‘swim with whale shark’ tourism operators, Les Baleines Rand'eau and Safari Baleine during tourism activities directed by the Madagascar Whale Shark Project over four years (2016-2019). A total of 1792 sightings were reported with 13 identified species, including elasmobranchs: whale shark, Rhincodon typus; spinetail mobula ray, Mobula japonica; giant oceanic manta ray, Manta birostris; shortfin devil ray, Mobula kuhlii; balaenids: humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae; Omura's whale, Balaenoptera omurai, delphinids: Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops aduncus; spinner dolphin, Stenella longirostris; pantropical spotted dolphin, Stenella attenuata; Indian ocean humpback dolphin, Sousa plumbea; false killer whale, Pseudorca crassidens; melonheaded whale, Peponocephala electra and one cheloniid species: leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea. Sightings were spatially analysed at a community level according to feeding guilds (i.e., filter feeders vs. predators), and distribution of the megafauna groups v were compared to selected remotely sensed physico-chemical data (sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration) and bathymetry charts (depth and slope) using generalized linear models (Chapter 2). All four variables had a significant effect on filter feeder distribution. Spatial distribution of filter feeder sightings peaked at an area of steep underwater topography (18-50m; x slope=0.5%) located on the west coast of Nosy Be, where foraging aggregations of large filter feeders (primarily R. typus and B. omurai) were frequently observed. Only SST had a significant effect on the relative abundance of animals in the predator feeding guild, which demonstrated a more longitudinal distribution along the continental shelf. The maximum entropy model (Maxent) was used for predicting habitat preference for the most frequently sighted species (Chapter 3). The distribution of whale sharks, mobulid rays and Omura’s whales were significantly overlapped as they were abundant in two main hotspots, Grand banc de l’entrée (~10 km of the west coast) and near Nosy Mitsio island, (~50 km northeast of Nosy Be). Suitable habitat for the dolphins was in relatively shallow waters in temperatures <28ºC near areas of steep changes in bathymetry. Bottlenose and spinner dolphins had a more widespread distribution across the continental shelf and humpback dolphin was closely associated with inshore reefs and occur in waters <10m. The coastal and inshore region of Nosy Be is an important habitat for a variety of megafaunal species, and the continental shelf provided essential areas for feeding and breeding. The results were similar to those presented for these species in other regions of the Indian Ocean (i.e., Eastern and Southern Africa; Western Australia; Seychelles) as well as outside of the Indian Ocean (i.e., Indonesia; Caribbean; North Atlantic). Thus the results from this thesis could be considered for management recommendations for marine conservation in the region.     Relating vegetation distribution to cycles of erosion and deposition in the Kromme River wetlands

    The role of geomorphic disturbance has been increasingly recognized as fundamental in the creation and functioning of wetlands. This is true of the Kromme River wetland which has been formed through repeated cycles of erosion and deposition. However, the response – and influence – of wetland plants to these sorts of disturbance has not been investigated. This study sought to fill this knowledge gap by classifying vegetation communities over a range of hydrological and geomorphic disturbance regimes that have happened over the last few decades, and relating those vegetation communities to environmental factors. The study identified seven vegetation communities based on their species composition and abundance, which were related to geomorphic disturbance events. A conceptual model that accounts for vegetation distribution in the Kromme wetland was developed. Soil saturation was the most important factor explaining vegetation community distribution, which, in turn, is influenced by cycles of erosion and deposition. Following an erosional event on the valley floor, Prionium serratum dominated wetland is converted to a number of other vegetation communities. On the floodplain surface adjacent to the eroded gully, the Prionium serratum dominated wetland is transformed over time to Cynodon dactylon and Sporobolus fimbriatus communities. Prionium serratum clumps immediately adjacent to the recently incised gullies are able to persist, having sufficient access to water. Within the newly formed gullies, Juncus lomatophyllus colonizes the gully beds flooded to a shallow depth, Miscanthus capensis colonizes the gully bars and Setaria incrassata colonizes the exposed gully banks. Localised depositional features close to the thalweg in the gully are colonized by Prionium serratum seedlings and vegetative propagules. These plants represent the regenerating phase of Prionium serratum wetland, which also colonizes depositional floodouts downstream of the newly-formed gully. The Stenotaphrum secundatum community dominates drier, more elevated areas of the floodout. Over time, as the gully fills, Prionium serratum expands beyond the gully onto the valley floor, to replace the floodplain communities Cynodon dactylon and Sporobolus fimbriatus. Over time, Prionium serratum is thought to colonize the valley floor as the gully fills, stabilising it and promoting diffuse flow. Many restoration efforts in damaged palmiet wetlands have been focused on the preservation of intact palmiet communities upstream of erosional headcuts, with limited understanding of vegetation dynamics associated with the cut-and-fill cycles that naturally occur in these wetlands. Understanding the regeneration of Prionium serratum following erosional events is thus important for wetland restoration, as it should focus more attention on promoting palmiet restoration on depositional floodouts downstream of eroded gullies. A secondary aim of this study was to explore the possibility of mapping palmiet communities in Kromme River wetland using remote sensing techniques. Using a combination of ground-truthed data from this and previous studies in the Kromme River wetland, together with raster layers derived from a LiDAR survey, an overlay analysis was developed to effectively map the distribution of the Prionium serratum dominated community. The overlay was created using a machine learning library in RStudios known as Rpart. The results found that the model were 91% effective in classifying the distribution of the Prionium serratum community. A secondary finding was that the inclusion of a Relative Elevation Model in the overlay analysis allowed for the identification of Prionium serratum communities vulnerable to degradation following previous geomorphic disturbance events and those Prionium serratum communities that are likely to persist following a geomorphic disturbance event.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Geography, 202

    Developing a regulatory framework for electronic commerce in the Southern African Development Community: the prospects and challenges

    The adoption of international instruments namely, the Model Law on Electronic Commerce, the Model Law on Electronic Signatures and the United Nations Convention on the use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts was mainly necessitated by the need to remove unnecessary obstacles to the development of e-commerce. However, many years later, countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are grappling with the effective regulation of e-commerce. Globally, e-commerce has been embraced as an instrument for boosting economic growth to achieve various developmental goals including employment creation and poverty alleviation, among others. Given its significance and transnational nature, a comprehensive harmonised regulatory framework that enhances regulatory certainty remains a sine qua non to the development of e-commerce. This study examines the SADC’s regulatory approach to e-commerce and questions whether it has successfully harmonised e-commerce laws in a way that enhances legal certainty in e-commerce transactions. It observes that, notwithstanding the adoption of the SADC Model Law on Electronic Transactions and Ecommerce, the regulation of e-commerce in most SADC countries remains archaic, fragmented and unpredictable. In order to draw lessons for the development of an e-commerce regulatory framework that enhances legal certainty and predictability in e-commerce transactions, the study explores the regulatory approach to e-commerce of various Regional Economic Communities (REC) namely the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the East African Community (EAC) and the European Union (EU). In the end, the study proposes the development of a community law on e-commerce in SADC. It recommends some pertinent changes in the legal formulation and institutional framework of the SADC Treaty to ensure that the community law on e-commerce is adopted and implemented effectively by Member States.     The impact of political instability on exchange rates in South Africa: an econometric modelling

    The exchange rate and political instability are crucial macroeconomic variables strongly related to every economy. In South Africa, exchange rate fluctuations are widely related to major political events. The study analyses the fluctuations in exchange rates by applying exchange rate data over the period 1989 to 2020. The current study, used the predictive quantitative design that combines correlational analysis with predictive modelling. The Unit root results show that political instability and exchange rate are stationary at first difference, and inflation, GDP, political instability, the rule of law, and corruption control and corruption freedom are stationary at level. The Vector Auto Regression model (VAR) was applied to examine the short-run relationship between political instability exchange rate, GDP, inflation, real interest rate, corruption and the rule of law. The results show a short-run relationship between political instability, exchange rate, GDP, inflation, real interest rate, corruption and rule of law. Johansen Cointegration testing was also performed to establish cointegration between variables. The results from the Johansen tests suggest that the model presents a cointegration between political instability, GDP, inflation, real interest rate, corruption and the rule of law and exchange rate, implying that these variables are related and can be combined linearly. The VECM was performed to establish a long-run relationship between variables since cointegration was established between variables. The Vector Error Correction (VEC) model complemented these findings resulting in the null hypothesis that states there is no long-run relationship between variables being rejected. The alternative hypothesis that there is a long-run relationship between variables was accepted. The Granger Causality test was performed to examine the causality between variables and to examine the drivers and causes of exchange rate fluctuations in the VAR model. The results revealed that political instability does not Granger cause exchange rate fluctuations in the short run and that there is a negative relationship between political instability and exchange rate fluctuations. The short-run results revealed that the exchange rate does not Granger cause political instability. However, the exchange rate Granger causes the country's political instability in the long run. This study’s literature review found that political instability harms exchange rates and the economy, and its impact can be felt globally. The results of the study show that there is a negative relationship between political instability and exchange rates. In the short run, the results show that political instability Granger causes inflation. The impulse response function (IRF) was conducted to determine the shock of political instability on the exchange rate. The findings indicate that the magnitude of the shock refers to one standard deviation. The results show that after two years, 92% of the shock in exchange rates is due to the shock on the exchange rate itself, and only 0.12% is due to political instability in the short run. This means that the shock on the exchange rate is associated with the exchange rate itself. The result is consistent with empirical findings in South Africa that fluctuations, in the long run, are largely caused by political instability from corruption. The exchange rate results and the political instability response were used to calibrate the long-run response to exchange rate fluctuation. Political instability was also used to assess the nexus between political instability and economic growth. The results determine a positive relationship between political instability and economic growth. The IRF was performed to track the impact of a variable on other variables (that is, the exchange rate on political instability, GDP, corruption, inflation, real interest rate, the rule of law, and corruption) in the system from several periods in the future. The Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model for forecasting was selected because it provides an accurate forecast and satisfies the criteria for an ideal model. The results show that in the future, not much variation can be expected in the long run, meaning that political instability is projected to stabilise from 2021 to 2040, and the exchange rate will increase. The results from the analysis of exchange rates and political instability confirm the existence of a negative relationship between political instability and exchange rates. The findings of the study point to a need for the South African government to immediately respond to an increase in exchange rates and to stabilise the undercurrents caused by macroeconomic shocks.     The CODESRIA debate on academic and intellectual freedom in Africa: the role and responsibility of African intellectuals

    According to Fagunwa (2011), intellectuals serve as the glue that binds societies together and serve as the foundation upon which new civilizations are created and dismantled. The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) of 1990 entrusted intellectuals with crucial transformative tasks (roles) and responsibilities in Africa. This study explores the transformational roles and responsibilities of African intellectuals in neo-liberal and neo-colonial Africa as well as how academic freedom must be understood by African academics in accordance with the present debate on academic freedom in South Africa, which was fueled by Nattrass (2020) paper. The primary premise of this study is that academic freedom in Africa today is viewed differently than it was during the CODESRIA meeting on academic freedom in 1990, and that this is because of African intellectuals not carrying out their roles and responsibilities in Africa. In CODESRIA 1990, academic freedom referred to an academic’s unrestricted, yet responsible, right to pursue their academic interests (CODESRIA 1990; Kampala Declaration 1990). African academics now understand academic freedom to be merely their own freedom, unrelated to their responsibility to use it ethically and professionally. Hence, for them, academic freedom entails the freedom to express oneself without restrictions or fear of criticism (Chachage, 2008; Nattrass, 2020b; Esso, and Long, 2020). Looking at this current misinterpretation of academic freedom, the 1990 CODESRIA meeting is a good reference point to the debate on academic freedom in Africa and role and responsibility of African intellectuals. This is because, it was where academic freedom and the role and responsibility of African intellectuals in Africa was professionally conceptualized. Thus, this study reviews the 1990 CODESRIA debate to understand the role and responsibility of African intellectuals. This study utilizes two theories, Social Constructivism Theory and the Social Responsibility Theory, to explain the position it has taken on the subject at hand.     The factors affecting the effectiveness of asset management in the COCT municipality's urban waste management directorate

    This study aims to investigate how Internal control system (ICS), Information system (IFS), Employee competence (ECT) and Leadership commitment (LDC) influence the effectiveness of asset management in the City of Cape Town municipality’s Urban Waste Management directorate. A quantitative research approach was employed to investigate these four factors. Primary data was collected from 114 respondents, using online questionnaires that were administered through QuestionPro; the completed questionnaires were then analyzed using Statistica Data Science Workbench, version 14. Results showed that all four factors – Employee Competence, Internal Control System, Information System and Leadership Commitment – have a positive and significant impact on the effectiveness of asset management.     The determinants of renewable energy in South Africa

    The South African energy system to date has been dominated by the high consumption of fossil fuels and the resultant greenhouse gas emissions. Aside from this, the country has continued to witness incessant power outages, a shortfall in electricity supply, and high electricity prices due to the ageing infrastructure of coal-powered plant. Meanwhile, the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Agenda mandates countries to ensure a sustainable environment by embracing affordable and clean energy in order to mitigate unfavourable climate action by 2030. The attainment of most Sustainable Development Goals depends on renewable energy development which includes solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass energy among others. Therefore, an empirical study of the socio-economic and environmental determinants of renewable energy consumption in South Africa is imperative. Based on Environmental Kuznetz curve and Khan’s sustainable development theories, this study employed the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and Vector Autoregressive (VAR) causality methods to analyse the long-run relationship between economic, environmental and social determinants of renewable energy. The quantile regression method examined the relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth in South Africa between 1985 to 2021. The study shows a long-run relationship between renewable energy and economic factors such as gross domestic product, energy imports, and exchange rate, while gross capital formation and average electricity prices indirectly impact renewable energy consumption. Moreover, there exists a unidirectional influence between gross domestic product and real effective exchange rate to renewable energy consumption. The study suggests that more investment in renewable infrastructures and technology would improve renewable energy consumption in South Africa. The long-run result between environmental factors and renewable energy shows that fossil fuels, deforestation, and carbon dioxide emission indirectly influence renewable energy, while energy depletion increases as renewable energy consumption increases. Meanwhile, a unidirectional causality runs from renewable energy consumption to fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. This suggests that renewable energy consumption would improve environmental quality in South Africa.On the relationship between social factors and renewable energy consumption, the long-run result shows that educational spending and employment rate positively increases renewable energy consumption, while per capita income and urban growth is yet to positively influence renewable energy. Moreover, a bidirectional causal relationship exists between employment rate and renewable energy consumption. This suggests that renewable energy would create job opportunity or the other way round vice versa in South Africa. There is a positive relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth between quantile 10th to 75th, with a quick negative turning seen higher, at quantile 90th. The growth of per capita income also shows a positive relationship at the lower quantile, while an inverse relationship was seen at the higher quantile of 50th to 99th. Non-renewable energy shows a significant and positive relationship to carbon dioxide emission across the quantile curve, while renewable energy shows an inverse relationship to carbon dioxide emissions across the quantile curve; and a quick turn from 25th quantile showing that urban growth does not positively influence renewable energy. This suggests that non-renewable energy use damages the environment, while renewable energy consumption improves the quality of the environment in South Africa. The study recommends that a direct alteration of renewable energy consumption by government is a necessary condition to diffuse clean energy technology across the country. Also, increasing investment in renewable energy infrastructure through public, private and government participation is a necessary move to actualise the achievement of self-sufficiency in the renewable energy sector. Furthermore, since research is an engine room for technological innovation, government should prioritise learning in the form of research, formal and informal training, and short-term courses to equip citizens with the necessary renewable technology skills.     Lifting the veil on the "Untouchable": a study of Muslims living with HIV in Durban, South Africa

    HIV and AIDS has been prominently studied, by both biomedical and social scientists, since the 1980s. Despite the extensive research that has emerged globally, Muslims have largely been absent in much of the discourse on HIV and AIDS. While the disease is said to be under control in many parts of the world, hidden populations pose a risk to increase in prevalence. Muslims living with HIV are one such hidden population and are only recently gaining representation in studies on HIV and AIDS. Quantitative studies reflect a sharp increase in HIV prevalence in countries with significant Muslim populations, however, more in-depth qualitative studies are needed to garner an understanding of the nature of the disease among Muslims. Muslims have a long history in South Africa, beginning with indentured slavery in Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) in 1860. There are no specific HIV and AIDS prevention campaigns directed at Muslims in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Muslims in Durban do not regard HIV is a significant concern for them due to religious doctrine, which they believe if followed will keep them safe from infection. My findings suggest that there is cause for concern over the spread of HIV and AIDS amongst Muslims in Durban. The hidden nature of the disease in the Muslim community has created challenges to curbing the spread of the disease due to the concealment of its presence and the marginalisation of Muslims living with HIV and AIDS. This study conceptualises the HIV and AIDS lived experience amongst Muslims in Durban, South Africa, and uncovers the social and cultural context of the disease. The qualitative study used life histories with ten Muslims living with HIV and semi-structured and unstructured interviews with ten caregivers, five health care professionals and two religious leaders to gain a detailed understanding of the lived experiences of Muslims in Durban. Through the lenses of Purity and Danger, Stigma and Spoilt Identity, and Social Death, this study found that religion [Islam] and its strong moral code influences understandings and perceptions of HIV and AIDS which, in turn affects diagnosis, treatment, care, social identity, and the social well-being of Muslims living with HIV who face stigma, discrimination, shame, and ostracisation from their own community. This study highlights the gaps in the literature on Muslims living with HIV and by providing insight into the lives of participants, the study draws attention to the plight of Muslims living with HIV and AIDS (MLWHIV) and encourages more qualitative studies to be conducted so that a multifaceted understanding of Muslims living with HIV can be created.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Humanities, Anthropology, 202

    An investigation into fatigue prevalence amongst citrus packhouse sorters in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa

    Background: South Africa is the second most influential exporter of citrus fruits internationally and holds a pivotal role in economic revenue for the country. Rural areas, such as the Sundays River Valley in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, contribute to the country’s citrus production. Many women depend on citrus packhouses for employment as citrus sorters. As humans perceive certain defects in citrus fruits more accurately than machines, these sorters must identify and manually remove any fruit that does not conform with export requirements. Citrus sorters are exposed to numerous physical and cognitive stressors during the task while faced with organizational challenges, such as shift work and long working hours. Therefore, the potential for fatigue development is anticipated. Given the multifactorial nature of fatigue and the negative consequences it may have on workers, it also has the potential to impede the accuracy of the sorting performance. Stringent disciplinary action for the entire South African citrus industry may be of consequence if nonconforming or pest-infested fruit is missed by citrus sorters and exported to foreign countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of fatigue among citrus sorters in a citrus packhouse in the Sundays River Valley of the Eastern Cape throughout a citrus harvesting season and to identify factors that may contribute towards fatigue development. Methods: The research design utilized a crosssectional, two-part approach that applied mixed methods. Part one was administered once-off, incorporating demographic, work-, and non-work-related questions. Part two was a self-developed repeated measures assessment comprising close-ended contextual questions, the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, and the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale. Environmental and work output data were also recorded. Results: Citrus sorters (n= 35) recorded a mean MFIS score of 39.35 throughout the harvest season, which was above the prescribed fatigue threshold (38). However, there was no significant difference in fatigue ratings over time (p= 0.122). Day shift workers exceeded the fatigue threshold for the entire season compared to night shift workers, who only exceeded it in the last two weeks. The physical, cognitive, and psychosocial subscales found no significant difference in fatigue scores, although physical fatigue recorded the highest scores across all weeks and displayed a significant difference over time. Overall, participants, on average, perceived to be “neither sleepy nor alert” over the season. However, eight participants (22%) recorded sleepiness scores ii exceeding the excessive sleepiness threshold of seven. Educational levels, health status, work-pace, and the number of family dependents significantly contributed to fatigue development, albeit a weak correlation. Discussion: Sorters were perceived to be fatigued from week three till the end of the study; however, there was no variation in fatigue scores over time. An accumulation of physical fatigue over time was revealed where prolonged standing, repetitive work, and irregular working postures may have contributed. Night shift workers did not receive the recommended hours of sleep (7-8 hours); hence, they registered greater sleepiness scores over the season than day shift workers. Environmental and work output recordings did not prove to have a significant influence on fatigue development, and neither did work experience or physical exercise. Conclusion: An amalgamation of numerous contributing factors within the work situation, private situation, and the individual influenced the development of fatigue, where there was no primary causal factor.     The effect of entrepreneurial competencies on the performance of small micro and medium enterprises in or Tambo District, Eastern Cape

    The Small Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) remain the key competitor in the development of the economy growth of the country. The SMME sector is the key driver to the national economy of countries, as it creates job opportunities, reduce poverty, supports household income, and improve the people’s standard of living. However, the rate at which SMMEs fail to succeed results in non-performance and business closure, and this is alarming and require attention. The reasons for this failure can emanate from a number of reasons, such as lack of entrepreneurial competencies, managerial skills, lack of intellectual personnel, low entrepreneurial culture and obstacles that hinder access to resources and market. Therefore, in this study the researcher examined the effect of entrepreneurial competencies on the performance of SMMEs in OR Tambo District, Eastern Cape. The researcher adopted quantitative research approach. The research data was collected using Google Forms survey method. The emails containing the link to access the instrument were sent to a sample of 399 SMMEs in the OR Tambo District. The response rate of 74%, which is 294 was attained. Thus, the findings of the study discovered that entrepreneurial competencies have significant effect on the performance of SMMEs. The study further found that entrepreneurial competencies “opportunity recognition, creative-problem solving, resource leveraging, and business networking” had a low degree of association with business performance although they are statistically significant to business performance. The self-efficacy was found with a high degree of association with business performance and statistically significant with the achievement of positive beta and low p-value which indicated a strong association to performance. The study made conclusions that entrepreneurial competencies have positive effect on the performance of SMMEs. Therefore, it was concluded that performing and successful SMMEs in the regions means employment opportunities in the country because they require human resources to do operational services and render services. The government and policymakers are encouraged to work together to form and strengthen development programs to assist SMMEs to grow the production capacity, operations and become productive. The SMMEs owners/managers and practitioners on skills development are encouraged to relook and strengthen entrepreneurial competencies that contribute to productivity and performance.Thesis (DBA) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 202
